Details of Brian McCann’s vesting option

By

Finally, we have the details of Brian McCann‘s vesting option, courtesy of Joel Sherman. The option for 2019 is worth $15M and vests with 1,000 plate appearances from 2017-2018, 90 games as a catcher in 2018, and if he’s not on the DL at the end of 2018. All of those conditions must be met. If the option vests, McCann can void it and become a free agent. For all intents and purposes, he must still be a starting catcher in 2018 for the option to kick in. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

Awesome. I was a bit concerned that it would be something too attainable. But if that option vests, it means McCann has been healthy, at least mildly productive, and still a catcher (which is important for obvious reasons and also because his bat plays much better at C ).

I agree, those conditions make it difficult for the option to vest.

    Pleasantly surprised

Me, too. After hearing the weak requirements on CC’s option, I assumed that all of these vesting options were Christmas presents for the players.

To me that deal went from pretty good to great. If McCann is catching at that point, that’s awesome and he’s probably worth it. If not the Yankees just signed a 5 year deal with a top 3 catcher in the league.

    This is awesome.

5 yr deals for 30 yr old catchers suck but at least it’s better than a 6 yr deal.

Whoa. That’s pretty freaking great. That’s two almost completely healthy seasons and him being a full time catcher in 2018 (so if one of the kids forces the issue, McCann will be outta luck).

    Fantastic.

IT looks like a very good deal at this point, provided there are no more issues with his shoulder. Have to think if he held out, he could have got a better deal from someone, seems like some what of a bargin at this point. He must have really wanted to play for the Yankees/winner.
