MLBTR: Yankees have talked to Brett Tomko about comeback
Report: MLB tells teams to implement security screening by 2015

Less than 70 hours to go in the Masahiro Tanaka signing period and there is still no serious indication of where he may land. It could be the Yankees, Cubs, or Dodgers depending on who you ask and what day of the week it is. Tanaka did some nice unintentional trolling earlier today, which was fun for a little while. I’m really looking forward to this whole process being over. Hopefully the Yankees sign him.

Here is your open thread for this snowy night. All of the local hockey and basketball teams are playing except for the Knicks, so talk about those games or anything else right here. Have at it.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

I think the Tanaka Twitter deal just made me love the man.

    • Dalek Jeter

Link for one of the like 9 people under the age of 30 with out a twitter?

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

        Um…..scroll up, dude. :)

    • Alkaline

      Yeah, that was pretty awesome.

  • Farewell Mo

Must have missed this the other day about players wanting Arod kicked out of the union.

    http://espn.go.com/new-york/ml.....cked-union

It’ll be interesting to see what’ll happen if he plays again considering he was getting thrown at BEFORE he sued the union.

    • TWTR

From a legal perspective, I think he may have had to do that in order to attempt to successfully attack the arbitration process since the MLBPA has supported it, but it could get really ugly, with A-Rod being treated similar to a scab if he comes back.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for his recent conversation with Jeter.

      • Betty Lizard

Yeah, I don’t see how Alex could appeal without naming MLBPA. If he had done so, MLBPA no doubt would have been clamoring to be joined!

As for the “unnamed” players saying kick Alex out: could be some whistling past the graveyard.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was considerable concern by some players in that group about their past activities.

        • vicki

they should be even more concerned about their future rights. for those who missed it here’s william rhoden’s column published in the times over the weekend.

          http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01.....idols.html

by the bye, paul molitor’s santicmonious mouth-running was pretty ridiculous too.

          • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Totally agree about Molitor. I always value highly the opinion of a guy who did recreational drugs during his career, never faced discipline for it, and was whisked right into the HOF.

Also totally agree about the players clamoring for ARod’s expulsion. These idiots need to put themselves in his shoes, just for five minutes. When it comes right down to it, the union is supposed to back its members. It didn’t really do that, at least not 100%, in ARod’s case. So he has a right to be pissed at them.

Right now, with shit like this, the union is making it very possible for MLB to take shit away from them come the next CBA. They’re rolling over and playing dead, all for a notion of “the good of the game.” Same shit Goodell got away with when he instituted that “personal conduct policy” in the NFL.

            • Betty Lizard

Yeah, I’m all for drug tests and discipline for failing a test.

But letting MLB ban a player for a year or more or for life “for the good of the game”?

Suspend a player for drug use without a failed test?

              Fuck that.

              • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Yea, and fuck Tommy Lasorda’s comments, too.

                • Betty Lizard

Tommy Lasorda can rot in hell.

                  • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

I generally like Lasorda, not really sure why, but he is a pretty big hypocrite.

                    • Jorge Steinbrenner

I like the grand majority of the old-school guys. There’s just a major point of separation of opinion on some things.

                      Can’t imagine baseball without Lasorda.

              • Need Pitching & Hitting

So if they can conclusively prove use without a positive test, there should be no discipline?

                Fuck that.

                • Jim Is A (Bored) Peckerhead

No discipline != kicked out of the union.

                  You’re better than that.

          • cashjr

I’m all for players defending themselves to the fullest, but the problem as I see it is the current clean players are stuck between a rock and a hard place. The more you try and fight for your rights, as they did very well in the 90’s, the more you fall victim to “they’re all doing PED’s”. Also there is a lot of money at stake and I can appreciate guys not making it being mad at enhancers who might be taking their jobs. I think clean players are frustrated (and the union head is one of them) and it’s coming out this way. The players may be willing to give up some rights in order to clear their names and their legacies and keep the playing field as level as possible. Blame Selig all you want for turning a blind eye, but clearly two played at that game.

Also does anyone really believe AROD is suing to protect other players rights? Clearly the union that he’s suing to protect their own rights isn’t buying it.

            • vicki

the backlash you describe isn’t good for the game either. marvin miller is spinning in his grave.

maybe activism is something the rod can do with his abundance of free time and money.

      • pft2

I think you overestimate the impact of some anonymous player. I suspect there are a number of players upset with the union right now over the huge loophole they left in the JDA for the commissioner to penalize for non-analytical positives, the unions lack of concern over MLB’s over the top investigative tactics, the QO loophole which allows players to cost a draft pick multiple times in free agency, the tie-on of LT with revenue sharing rebates which had helped inhibit spending on some non-elite free agents, and the fact the union has not yet fired the arbitrator for his ludicrous finding.

If player reps don’t know that Arods problem is with the union leaders and not the players in the union, then they have been badly misinformed by their union leader whose qualifications for the job are frankly suspect.

    reasonable contact prediction for tanaka:
6 years team option for 7th year and a vesting option for an 8th that vests if he has more than 17 wins in 2020, has 200+ strikeouts in 2020 or has an era under 2.75 in 2020.
most he can make $170 M
least he can make $120 M
incentives for era under 3.00 per season, 150 stikeouts per season and 15+ wins per season

    • Dalek Jeter

I don’t think you can have performance vesting, just innings and starts…at least under the old CBA.

      • RetroRob

That’s correct. Wins, ERA, Ks, etc. can not be part of a contract.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some team gives him the ability to opt after year four or five.

  • Wheels

Really looking forward to some warm spring nights watching baseball right about now.

  • Anthony

Take this with a tremendous grain of salt but according to this story:

    http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/h.....annex-base

-Masahiro Tanaka may make his announcement TONIGHT (State time)
-Yankees/Dodgers/Diamondbacks appear to be in the lead for his services.

    • Pinkie Pie

I could certainly stand for him to decide in the next couple of hours.

      Sooooo sick of waiting…

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

We shall see. Thanks for sharing.

So, once he signs, what do you move on to next?

      • Anthony

I would hope the Yankees add some legitimate infield help, perhaps Stephen Drew. Bullpen needs to be upgraded as well.

    • RetroRob

I prefer my grains in English.

Be surprising if the announcement came around midnight ET. Well, then again, if he signs with a West Coast team it will only be 9 pm!

  • http://none ben

also, dont see any other team as a legitimate contender for tanaka,
angels: have pujols, hamilton, wilson, who are owed a lot of money, and need to start saving for trout.
    dodgers: $215M on kershaw
    cubs: legitimate contender
    whitesox: dont have the money

    • Dalek Jeter

Really, the only team I’m concerned about are the Dodgers. They’re currently a better team than the Yankees and they seem to not care about money more than George Steinbrenner didn’t care about money. Angels, like you said, have a finite pocketbook and have a lot more spending to do in the near future, Cubs are at least 2 years away from contending and I doubt Tanaka wants to spend his first two seasons in the big league losing, the White Sox are bad and limited financially. I guess the D’Backs are a dark horse…but I’m much more concerned with the Dodgers.

      • http://none ben

i agree, im concerned about the dodgers oo but i think tanaka would want to be the face of the yankees over another star on the dodgers

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

Not concerned about any one particular team. Just simply concerned by Yankees versus the field.

      • RetroRob

I am greatly concerned about the Montreal Expos. They’ve been incredibly quiet for a long time. It’s eerie. I think they’re lying in the weeds.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

We’re looking at the wrong Seattle team. The Pilots literally have zero payroll.

          • vicki

make your jokes, but i felt vindicated after reading the astros shout-out on mlbtr today (as a long-shot, but still). they’re going to start spending pretty soon here.

            • Jorge Steinbrenner

Nothing at all against the Astros. I hope they rise out of the basement soon. I never like to see an organization down for too long.

              • vicki

they kind of used to be my nl team. i listened to milo hamilton and larry dierker on the radio when i was in college there, back when following the yankees meant reading box scores in the papers. i’m happy they have a good new owner and a smart, progressive gm.

plus the rest of that division is so detestable.

                • Lukaszek

except the athletics. i have a soft spot in my heart for the a’s

  • Alkaline

I saw the story about Tomko and was curious why it had so many comments.

    *facepalm*

    • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

All you have to do these days is CTRL+F, type in “Farewell Mo,” and see if it shows more than 2 hits.

If it does, there’s your answer.

      • Farewell Mo

I made a benign flippant comment and got attacked by some Dalek guy.

Whatever, get a life. Same goes to old Jorge and his little snide comments.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

You say dumb shit, you get called out on it.

You continuously say dumb shit and act smug about it at the same time, you both get called out on it and look like a very dumb person. That’s how it goes. Like I said, second dumbest commenter on this site, although you may get bumped to third with Rolling Doughnut showing up yesterday.

I have a wonderful life. Thank you.

          Also, good morning.

          • Farewell Mo

            Whatever.

New handle but your still a prick who’s not half as clever as he thinks

Mother jokes, are you 12 or near 40?

        • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

That was not an attack on you, just an observation that there have been a lot of arguments involving you and a bunch of people over the last several weeks.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

      Same old, same old.

  • mustang

Must handed to Tanaka and Close these dealing have been airtight I never seen anything like this especially in the Internet super information age. It’s sad when these guys can keep things tighter then the National Security Agency.

LOL “we laugh because it’s funny, and we laugh because it’s true. “

    • RetroRob

If the Yankees don’t sign him, I hope some team that has not been mentioned one single time, in any rumor, is the one that signs him. It would be funny how far off the rumors were and how much of a lock down Close had on these negotiations.

    Billingsly-Romine trade.
    comments?

    • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Why the fuck would the Dodgers do that?

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

I hit “force trade” the moment he mentioned it.

    • W.B. Mason Williams

Guy smells like a tweener #3 or #4 starter, with #4 being the more likely situation.

All the same, I think it’d take more than Romine. Maybe a AA fodder starter.

      • Cool Lester Smooth

A true #4 is worth far, far more than Romine and a AA fodder starter.

  • vicki

love abreu getting a shot in philly. hope he makes the supremely elite 300/400 club.

    • Jersey Joe

Yeah. That surprised me but I’m happy that he’s playing there again.

    • Farewell Mo

I was looking at his career on fangraphs earlier. While I don’t think he makes it, he’s not that far off from serious HOF credentials IMO.

      • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Very solid career, but a lot of people will find more reasons to not vote for him than to vote for him. He’s the kind of guy who needed to get 3,000 hits in order to make it into the HOF.

  • Jersey Joe

If Teixeira is injured, I’d like to see what Russ Canzler can do. He can fake it at 3rd and in the outfield, but play an OK 1B; basically what we were looking for with Reynolds. If Teixeira stays healthy, then he could at least make the roster as a bench bat. Come opening day, I’d like to see the position players be (With Teixeira hopefully):

    RHP
    Ellsbury CF
    Jeter SS
    Beltran RF
    McCann C
    Teixeira 1B
    Soriano DH
    Johnson 3B
    Roberts 2B
    Gardner LF
    ——
    Cervelli
    Ryan
    Canzler
    Sizemore

    LHP
    Ellsbury CF
    Jeter DH
    Beltran RF
    Teixeira 1B
    Soriano LF
    McCann C
    Sizemore 2B
    Canzler 3B
    Ryan SS
    ——
    Cervelli
    Gardner
    Johnson
    Roberts

[No real need for 4th outfielder with Gardner]

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

I’d forgotten about Canzler. Good thought there.

    • vicki

i really expected the jeff baker talk to rev up after the story about teix’s stiffness.

    • Dalek Jeter

According to many metrics at this point in their respective careers Soriano is a better defender than Beltran, and with Betlran’s knees I’d much rather him see more time at DH than Sori.

      • Cool Lester Smooth

I think there’s a bigger issue with Sori’s arm in RF than there is with Beltran’s knees.

        • Dalek Jeter

My problem with Beltran’s knees aren’t his subpar defense (hell, if I lose 20 pounds, I could probably man RF with Ells in CF and Gardner in LF)but more with I want him to play in 140-150 games.

          • RetroRob

Based on the ratings and the shape of Beltran’s knees, I would probably have Soriano play more in the field than Beltran this year. At the least, I’d seriously consider it until I could see both in action in right.

The shorter right field at YS and limited foul territory does provide some advantages to fielders by cutting down the amount of ground to cover, and shortens the throws from right. Swisher’s ratings out there weren’t bad.

            • Dalek Jeter

We are absolutely on the same page there. If it were me, I’d definitely have Sori penciled in as the “primary” right fielder for now, until I saw something to tell me otherwise anyway.

            • Farewell Mo

You’d think if they hold onto Gardner, they could limit each guy to about 70-75 games in the outfield which would probably be ideal keeping them healthy, rested and productive.

              • RetroRob

I suspect Gardner and Ellsbury should both play 150 games in the field, assuming health. Maximize their defense. A split with Beltran and Soriano in the field could work.

  • Dalek Jeter

We need this Tanaka thing to be solved, just so the rest of the free agent market can take shape…I’m personally very hopeful that Drew (or Morales after today’s news about Tex) will fall into the Yankees laps on a cheap deal.

  • RetroRob

So exactly where is Tanaka? He has to be in the States somewhere, but I haven’t read a single rumor about where.

Anthony, can you get on this one for us?!

    • Farewell Mo

It would be funny if he was spotted in Chicago.

      Anthony would burst an aneurysm.

    • Dalek Jeter

As far as reports go, I think he’s back in Japan…but if he is in the US I’d have to guess somewhere west coast. You’re right though, we totally need Anthony on the case.

      • RetroRob

Considering he has to take and pass a medical to finalize the deal and the flight time here, I’d think he’d be in route back right now unless he’s already here, or there is an agreement in place to use the medicals he had done a couple weeks back. Yet if I’m making a $100MM+ investment, I want my own doctors to take a look.

        • pft2

Plenty of time for a physical. The super rich get their stuff done on an expedited basis, all can be done in a day. If he leaves Tokyo Wednesday evening, he arrives Wednesday night to his destination in the US. Medicals on Thursday and closing on the deal Friday AM.

  • mustang

The Yankees will sign Masahiro Tanaka to a massive seven-year, $155MM contract that contains an opt-out after the fourth season, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX

    YESSSSS!!!!!

    • mustang

      Sorry Anthony
      LOL
