Tanaka-Themed Tuesday Night Open Thread

ESPNNY: Yankees may use Banuelos out of the bullpen in 2014
WFAN's Yankee Hot Stove event to help fight hunger

Next Monday at 7pm ET, the YES Network will air Masahiro Tanaka‘s June 9th start against the Yomiuri Giants in its entirety. John Flaherty, Ken Singleton, and Al Lieter reviewed the game (seven shutout innings) and provided their thoughts, which you can read right here. The video above is the pitch-by-pitch of that June 9th start, but Monday’s broadcast will be our first chance to see him pitch an actual game, not just some cut-up highlight video.

In other Tanaka news, just-released PECOTA (subs. req’d) projects him as a 180-inning, 3.45 ERA pitcher in 2014. The projected peripherals are very good (8.2 K/9, 2.3 BB/9, 45% grounders) and the top comps are Cole Hamels, Matt Cain, and Mat Latos. I’ll take it. Projections don’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things, but I’d rather see a good projection than a bad one, that’s for sure. Steven Marcus says the Yankees will try to have a press conference for Tanaka in New York before Spring Training starts next Friday, but that is still up in the air. He will definitely have one in Tampa if they can’t do one in the Bronx.

Here is your open thread for the night. The Rangers and Islanders are the only local teams in action, so talk about those games, Tanaka, or anything else right here. Enjoy.

I’ll sign up for those numbers. Still think there will be an adjustment phase in year one, but then again, maybe there will be and those will be his adjustment numbers before he’s even better in year two. One can hope.

His K rate will certainly be higher than in Japan based on the batting approach in Japanese leagues vs. MLB.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Oh, I will gladly those numbers in 2014. Just the thought of that gives me a giant workplace erection.

    • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

      I…am……quite scared right now.

      • Havok9120

I’m definitely glad I’m so far away from him. A couple thousand miles makes me way more comfortable.

        • RetroRob

Depends how giant it is. Careful when you walk outside.

          • Havok9120

When I left my review session, all was clear.

Though there was an ominous shadow on the horizon.

          • Jorge Steinbrenner

            Like a jump rope.

            • The Great Gonzo

              Braided or beaded?

              • Jorge Steinbrenner

                Ouch.

  • Tanuki Tanaka (Formerly Bob Buttons)

    Freddie Freeman sure got paid.

Also, Jared Lorenzen is in the news again.

    • vicki

good deal for the braves too.

    • RetroRob

Below market for the Braves based on current prices and projected arbitration raises, and they get him through his 20s to age 31. In Freeman’s case, he can then still try and score one more big contract in his early 30s, but if he fades or gets injured, he has his pay day. More risk on the Braves part, but seems like a good deal for both.

Jared? Is the news he’s still fat?!

      • Havok9120

It’s starting to throw off the Earth’s axial tilt.

        More at 11.

    • CashmanNinja

Freeman got a LOT of money, but the Braves will be paying for the prime of his career so I think it’s a great deal for them. He’ll hit the market when he’s…30 or 31. He could get 1 more decent pay day, but the Braves will be getting the best he has to offer. It’s a good move by them.

And Lorenzen is HUGE. I can’t believe he swelled up like that. It looks like he ate a middle-school aged child.

      • Farewell Mo

Those YouTube clips were just freakish. In a football uniform, he looks like 10lbs of shit stuffed into a 5 lb bag.

    • Preston

Jared Lorenzen is awesome. Watching him play at Kentucky was just a lot of fun. The team was terrible but there’d be he’d just scramble around and shrug of tacklers and then whip the ball into triple coverage. His Arena Football highlight reel is actually really impressive, dude could play. This stuff is obviously at a lesser level, and Lorenzn only looks talented by comparison, and he probably doesn’t weigh significantly more than he used to, but it looks like it’s distributed differently now.

  • Reuben Sierra’s Chains

Can anyone tell me why in the hell we haven’t signed Drew yet? We are already over 189. It’s obviously good move to make. Is Cashman afraid of Drew sleeping with his next girlfriend or something??

  • dkidd

those pecota numbers and leiter’s write-up making it harder to manage my expectations…

  • qwerty

Reading what Leiter, Flaherty, and Singleton said, I get the impression that they liked what they saw out of Tanaka but wasn’t overly impressed. I guess it’s kind of like watching a movie that you thought was entertaining, but wouldn’t go out of your way to rave about to anyone who would listen.

    • The Great Gonzo

“But Tanaka, like Buddha, never lost a regular-season game last year.”

Whaaaaaa? Sacrilege, party of one, your table is ready….

  • mediocre

That video is extremely uninspiring. Dude is all over the damn place vs. a parade of punch & judy rubbish. I sure hope he attacks with his fastball more often than that sorry display showed.

    • SWAG

Watch out dude. With all that talk no one will get to witness Fish Lips’s “giant erection”…

I guess we won’t have to be jumping rope anytime soon. What a loser.

      • The Great Gonzo

The troll is strong in this one. And the name change was clever… *wanking motion*

Always nice to see you and your many-named derivatives gracing the site.

It’s always nice when Stuart A can get a little homage.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

        Throw him a parade……….

I really hope for a comeback from 2013 stuart in which he’s John McCain to the new Negative Nancy’s GOP and is, like, y’ll crazy and stuff.

    • Havok9120

Taking you seriously for a moment, despite your screen name telling me I’d be better off not to, does it at least unnerve you that virtually every expert anywhere (most of whom have seen more of him than you do) completely disagrees with you opinion?

      • Paddy’s Pub

So I’m certain you can provide links to “expert” opinions regarding that video? That’s all he’s talking about. I’m not an expert but I agree with his opinion. Much of what I saw in that video was unimpressive. A lot of pitches I feel would have been murdered in MLB. His command looks off and he pitches up in the zone a little much for my liking.

I don’t believe he was talking about Tanaka’s career as a whole, as you are. That’s where everyone seems to be in agreement that he’s a very talented pitcher. But what is shown in that video isn’t very inspiring.

      • Brian Knoberts

This guy is a jackass. But it seemed like too many pitches in that video were sliders and too many of those sliders were up in the zone.

The 4seam/2seam/split combo looked pretty solid though, just wish he threw it more. The split he throws at 1:11 is absolutely ridiculous.

  • YANKEEGM

That video is not particularly inspiring. A ton of fastballs at the letters and splitters/sliders at the belt but laterally out of the zone. It looks like he uses the split as a called strike pitch a lot, which I fear will not be as effective in MLB. As we saw with Phil Hughes, those pitches that start with a hump (like Hughes’ curveball and Tanaka’s split when he tries to get a called strike on it) don’t fool many MLB hitters.

There were a number of well-placed 4-seamers on the outside edge to righties, and the splitters that he started in the zone the broke into the dirt were nice.

He’s gonna have to be able to locate that fastball as a primary pitch to both sides, work it more down in the zone, and use the splitter less as a called strike pitch and more of a swing and miss pitch here in the US.

That all said, there’s no doubt he’s a great add, and hopefully he just didn’t have his best stuff in the video.
