I thought it was pretty interesting, but also generic. I don’t blame him, but I just wish the media could be a little more original with their questions. They constantly repeat questions that have already been answered. I think the best questions came from the Japanese media who asked him things about his general impression of the city and even asked him about the first food that he ate over here. It just seems like the American media was more robotic and…just boring. I think Tanaka handled it as well as possible and I personally loved how the first thing he did was introduce himself in English. He doesn’t speak English and speaking a different language (even just 1 sentence) in front of a ton of cameras as everyone looks at you is not an easy task. He seemed about as comfortable and relaxed as someone could be in that situation.

The media couldn’t have asked worse questions even if that had been their intent.

Tanaka, however, was really poised, not showing any sign of the understandable nervousness he admitted to later.

I think he’s got the type of personality that one needs to have to thrive in NY. It kind of reminded me of Matsui because Matsui was kind of goofy (especially with Jeter), but when it was time to be serious he could get as serious as they come. I just got the same vibe from Tanaka and sometimes I wonder if the NY media asks those stupid questions on purpose to try to get him riled up so they could write about it and use it as fodder for future columns. Sort of like how the media did that with Randy Johnson for “shoving” the cameraman.

Not trying to be snarky at all, but considering Matsui is/was my favorite player, would you be able to expand a little bit on his antics with Jeter? Sounds like something fun to read or hear about!

    He seems like a he’s got a great personality! (I know, I know, SSS…)

Great. Now I have to learn a whole new sabremetric for personality?! This era of data driven baseball is really getting out of hand. Out of hand, I tell ya!!!

      • Mandy Stankiewicz

I see you’re a fella that likes his jokes.

        • gageagainstthemachine

I didn’t mean anything by my comment. Actually, I thought your SSS comment was funny and was just playing off of it. If I offended you, I apologize and it was completely unintentional.

Just stick to PPARP (Personality Points above Redsox Player)

NESN (of all sources) is reporting a rumor regarding a lifetime ban for A-ROD, that’s going to be handed down within days. Supposedly for violating the collective bargaining agreement. Anyone else hear anything like that ?

    That Yankees podium screams prestige.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

The bashful “I had sushi” part was so damn adorable, I must say.

  • Mark Teixeira – Ghostbuster (formerly Drew)

What a pointless press conference. The guy doesn’t speak English, and it was just awkward. Yes his opening sentence was in English but I bet Casey Close and his interpreter just drilled that sentence in his head. This kicks off the worst part of the offseason. The pointless questions and the thoughtless stories that are just made up.

Right, and to me this really hammered home how I think Ichiro/Kuroda will be really important. Even though they are so much older, he will feel so much less isolated I think with them there, even if it is only for one season.

  • Mike

It’s good to know that he came to NY because we have the best chance to win it all.

  • Ethan

I heard the only answers I needed to. He’s hear to win the WS, wants to beat up on the red sox, and refused to comment on if other teams offered more money (stupid question that one).

    • ALZ

Even if the other teams offered the same, would he take? To me the only comparable was the Dodgers, and I would have a hard time turning down LA. Even if they offered the same I really didn’t see Chicago/Phoenix being on the same level, Chicago is nice and all, but they aren’t as good as the Yankees/Dodgers.
