The Yankees battled back from a six-run deficit to tie the Tigers 7-7 in ten innings this afternoon. Hiroki Kuroda took one on the chin, allowing six runs on ten hits in 3.1 innings before reaching his pitch count. Just about everything was up in the zone. Not a good day for Kuroda. Seven relievers held Detroit to one unearned run 6.1 innings after that.
Frankie Cervelli had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two solo homers. Ichiro Suzuki, Derek Jeter, and Carlos Beltran went a combined 0-for-9 while Kelly Johnson and Alfonso Soriano both went 1-for-3. Zelous Wheeler hit what would have been a bases-clearing, game-tying double in the eighth, but it hopped over the fence for a two-run ground-rule double instead. Zoilo Almonte tied the game at seven with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Here’s the box score and video highlights, and here’s the rest from Tampa.
- The Yankees announced three more roster cuts: Slade Heathcott and Nik Turley were optioned to Triple-A Scranton while Gary Sanchez was optioned to Double-A Trenton. Heathcott (knee) and Turley (arm) did not play this spring due to injury. Don’t read anything into the levels they were assigned, these are just procedural moves and the assignments can change before the season.
- Tyler Austin (wrist) is hitting off soft toss now, not just a tee. Heathcott is still running and hitting, but nothing more. Dellin Betances threw a simulated game and Manny Banuelos will make his second appearance of the spring on Friday. [Chad Jennings]
- Both Matt Daley and Chris Leroux are making the trip to Panama. Shawn Kelley will not. The team leaves at 6pm ET tomorrow. [Jorge Castillo]
This is your open thread for the night. This afternoon’s game will be replayed on YES at 10pm ET. MLB Network will carry the Cubs and Mariners live at the same time, plus both the Knicks and Nets are playing as well. Talk about anything and everything right here.
