Spring Training Game Thread: Pineda, Part Two

By
(Presswire)

(Presswire)

The fifth starter competition takes another step forward this afternoon, as Michael Pineda makes his second Spring Training start and third overall appearance. He was reportedly very impressive in his first outing and slightly less so last time out, though he was hardly bad. Pineda will get stretched out a little bit more this afternoon, probably up to four innings and 60-65 pitches, so it’ll be good to see how he holds up later in games. He was hitting a wall around the 70-pitch mark during his Triple-A stint last summer.

The Red Sox are up from Fort Myers for this afternoon’s game, so I hope you’re ready for some over-analyzed Grapefruit League action. If you can’t beat ‘em on March 18th, when can you? Boston didn’t bring any of their top players, with only Jackie Bradley Jr., Jonny Gomes, Xander Bogaerts, and David Ross coming close to qualifying as regulars. Left-hander Felix Doubront will be on the mound. Here is Joe Girardi‘s starting lineup:

  1. LF Brett Gardner
  2. SS Derek Jeter
  3. RF Carlos Beltran
  4. 1B Mark Teixeira
  5. DH Alfonso Soriano
  6. C Frankie Cervelli
  7. 2B Brian Roberts
  8. 3B Kelly Johnson
  9. CF Ichiro Suzuki
    SP Michael Pineda

Available Pitchers: RHP David Robertson, LHP Fred Lewis, RHP Shawn Kelley, RHP Matt Daley, and RHP David Herndon are all scheduled to come out of the bullpen. RHP Jim Miller, RHP Yoshinori Tateyama, RHP Chris Leroux, and RHP Danny Burawa are the extra arms.

Available Position Players: C Austin Romine, 1B Jose Gil, 2B Eduardo Nunez, SS Dean Anna, 3B Zelous Wheeler, LF Yangervis Solarte, CF Adonis Garcia, and RF Zoilo Almonte will be the second string off the bench. C John Ryan Murphy and OF Antoan Richardson are also available.

It’s cloudy and cool in Tampa but there is no rain in the forecast after yesterday’s downpour. Hooray for that. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET and you can watch live on YES, ESPN, and MLB.tv. Enjoy the game.

  • Vincent Vega

    Cervy batting 6th, nice

    • nycsportzfan

      Beast!

  • tCMiller30

Excited to see Pineda pitch again.. Hoping to see a little bit more control

  • The Great Gonzo

Nice of the Red Sox to bring the Pawtucket Squad with them.

  • Farewell Mo

From a fantasy perspective, I wonder if Grady Sizemore really has a chance to beat out Bradley for starting CFer?

  • The Great Gonzo

Get ready, us watching on WatchESPN and I am properly prepared for the whole world to suck off Xander Begarts.

  • dot

Nunez is proud the way Pineda’s hat flew off.

  • Wheels

    Pineda flew over to first.

  • The Great Gonzo

Pineda looking sharp, Tex with a beauty of a snag for the first out.

  • dkidd

might be wishful thinking, but pineda’s velocity seems to be improving

    • Yankee$ (Formerly Pseudoyanks)

      93

  • Yankeefan91

any one notice how different the games look on espn compared to yes ? espn cameras look like they have more color n better hd.

  • The Great Gonzo

MAN that was a nasty slider from Pineda. Gomes looked like a little leaguer

  • dkidd

    pay attention, tex

    going the other way works

    • nycsportzfan

Or smacking 2run single by pulling it into LF also works.lol

  • The Great Gonzo

    Pasta Scooting Jeter

    • nycsportzfan

Infield rib singly for Cappy. Your seeing the speed of this team in play bigtime. SB for Brian Roberts, a sick bunt single by Gardy, and Gardy beating the throw to 2nd on Jeet’s infield hit.

  • dot

Off speed stuff looks really promising. Hoping the velo comes with time.

  • The Great Gonzo

For those playing at home, that’s a couple seeing eye grounders sandwiched by 2 K’s on 6 pitches.

  • John C

any idea what his velo is?

    • Yankee$ (Formerly Pseudoyanks)

Just hit a 93 and Slider looks great.

    • The Great Gonzo

I cannot believe that ball drops. Ellsbury makes that catch.

      • The Great Gonzo

        REPLY FAIL. What an amateur

  • The Great Gonzo

I love Alphonso so phucking hard right now

  • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

Don’t know if anyone is watching on ESPN, but the announcers basically said the yankees are old, “McCann is old, by catching standards” and the redsoxs are experienced, “The redsox have a combined 28 yrs of catching experience”…………….huh?

    • The Great Gonzo

      Welcome to ESPN.

      • Mr. Roth

ESPN announcers are contractually obligated to give the Red Sox organization a handjob in the dugout before or during every game.

        • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

          and some butt play.

          • Lukaszek

Crap I read this comment and almost swalled an egg whole

      • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

        You mean NESN, undercover.

  • dkidd

    pineda making ross look silly

  • nycsportzfan

Ichiro with the ribby single! I’m taking him off the bench over Zoilo, personally. Speed, defense, and hes a veteran hitter. I actually think he’ll flourish in a non-everyday role.

  • The Great Gonzo

OK, first things first… Lavarnway is a goddam abortion at 1B. If the Sox are REEEEEALLY shopping him, only play him at C and DH. Games like this have to kill his value.

Secondly, I know its a meaningless game, but watching this team put a beating on Doubront is making me happy.

  • Baked McBride

    Home
    Home again
    I like to be here
    When I can

  • Dalek Jeter

Just put on Gameday, it says Pineda has thrown 15 pitches through 2 IP, 14 strikes to 1 ball and has struck out 3? That’s pretty impressive.

    • Zanath

Gameday is pretty….crappy in Spring Training. It only shows pitches when something has happened. So likely he has thrown a bit more than 15.

      • warren

Hes thrown about 40 pitches in 3 innings with 5 k’s. Not quite gameday numbers but hes been nasty all day.

        • The Great Gonzo

THIS. A shit ton of sloppy swings.

      • Dalek Jeter

Yeah, I’ve noticed that Gameday has been pretty shitty the last inning or so.

        • The Great Gonzo

Game is on ESPN.com, if you can get to it today…

    • Yankee$ (Formerly Pseudoyanks)

44 pitches through 3 innings. Hit 94 this inning. Sitting 90. Threw a 90 mph meatball to JBJr in a bad spot and he hit it to Right Center, it dropped shy of the warning track for a double. Getting his K’s with the slider.

      • MartinRanger

In mid-march with a guy coming off a shoulder injury and a slider that filthy? I’ll take that.

Have we seen any changeups from the man? Or is he changing the velocity on the slider at all?

  • dot

    Dat slider

  • Wheels

    Another awesome slider.

  • warren

That slider is vicious. He’s made batters look silly with those swings and misses

  • The Other Matt

Pineda looks damn good right now. Guys are swinging at just about every slider he has thrown and have yet to make contact, hardly. Velocity on his fastball looks pretty good too.

  • boobie

pineda hits 94 vs gomes, and k’s him on a wicked slider. im all in on the season now

    • TWTR

      Yay!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Bee delay. Don’t see that everyday.

    • Yankee$ (Formerly Pseudoyanks)

Torre should have pulled the damn team off the field when the midges swarmed around Joba !!

      • OB/GYN Kenobi

The Final Ride of The Great Joba Chamberlain, RIP.

  • Eddardo Nuney

John and Susan say we’re in a bee delay. What’s happening? Are the bees attacking Girardi?

  • Dalek Jeter

Bees on the field?! FUCK THAT NOISE

  • The Great Gonzo

    Dear Mike Carp:

Stop being a pussy, get in position, they’re just bees.

    Regards,

    Larry Luccino

  • Mr. Roth

    Game delayed due to….bees?

  • Rooting for U.S. Steel

I like my outfielders the way I like my coffee… COVERED IN BEES!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx2NCday924

A little something for the delay…

  • NCS

This bee delay is the most riveting television I have seen in a while.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Biggest impact any of the Killer B’s have had on the Yankees yet.

    • Yankee$ (Formerly Pseudoyanks)

      I laughed.

    • lightSABR

      Nice.

Here’s hoping that’s no longer true in a few weeks.

  • Wheels

I think they’ve used enough Raid.

  • Dalek Jeter

John and Suzyn are hypothesizing what would happen if they poured beer on the bees.

    • OB/GYN Kenobi

You can’t predict what would happen if you poured beer on bees, Suzyn.

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

    Damn, Cervelli.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Hit it into the bees… good strategy Francisco.

  • Wheels

    Cervelli en fuego.

    • Yankee$ (Formerly Pseudoyanks)

So if they can’t trade him you put both John Ryan and Austin at AAA and let Austin DH when JR is catching and JR play some 3B when Romine is catching. The JR at 3B thing (for versatility) was something they talked about a couple of years ago but I think he’s only played a few games there and it was 2 years ago. With Alex questionable at 3B for 2015, and McCann at C for the next few years, may not be a bad thing, and keeps the depth. JR could play C and spell McCann and 3B and spell Alex in 2015.

      • Wheels

        Sounds pretty good.

  • warren

Cervelli triple off the bee wall! Carp did not want to chase that thing down

    • Dalek Jeter

      Nor would I. F that.

  • NCS

Not a triple, I think you score that a double with the runner advancing on bees.

    • Jimmy

      How do you score that?

  • Dalek Jeter

Suzyn: “Ichiro’s been playing the last few days because of Ellsbury’s ‘calf thing.’ And he’s played well, and his hit.”

    Ichiro’s slash this spring: .185/.267/.222.

Why can’t ma and pa just admit he’s done?

    • The Great Gonzo

      #OldGuyPride

    • vicki

      love the one you’re with.

    • nycsportzfan

Didn’t she mean hes hit the past few days? I think Ichiro will flourish as a extra OF’er, not playing everyday.

      • lightSABR

Do you have any reason to believe that beyond optimism? Do you know of any other washed-up former superstars that started hitting just because they stopped getting to the plate as often?

I’ll be happy if you’re right, but I’m pretty skeptical. I think he just doesn’t have the bat speed to hit for average anymore, and doesn’t have any other offensive tools worth finding at-bats for him. Sitting out most games isn’t going to fix that.

      • Kenny

Of course that’s what she meant.

    • Kenny

For a very good reason: they don’t want to be fired! They’re not paid to question management decisions.

  • Spaceman Spiff

Game day has Pineda throwing 22 strikes and 1 ball, is this true?

    • Dalek Jeter

No. Gameday is a lying whore, when I tuned-in bottom 2 it said he had thrown 15 pitches and struck out 3.

  • Spaceman Spiff

    Well said

  • Reggie C.

What’s the line looking like so far for Pineda?

    • Dalek Jeter

      4.0IP 0ER 3H 5K 0BB unofficially.

    • Wheels

      4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K.

    • The Great Gonzo

And beyond the line, FB was sitting at 91, topping out at 94 and the slider was ON POINT.

  • The Great Gonzo

Insert “Derek Jeter hitting into DPs at midseason form” joke here.

    • Dalek Jeter

      Captain DP

      • Dalek Jeter

        Ew…that sounds dirty. Forget that.

        • The Great Gonzo

That’s GOT TO be worth a gift basket…. AMIRITE?

  • The Great Gonzo

Alphonso put a phire under that one.

    • Dalek Jeter

According to Sterling that ball phlew phar out oph the ballpark.

  • Wheels

    Sori!

  • Dalek Jeter

John Sterling’s Soriano call. I think I’m in love. It’s so bad:

sing-songy: Who’s sorry now? Not Sori!

    • MartinRanger

That’s uniquely terrible. So very Sterling. And I’m going to love it and rejoice when I hear it in about a month.

    • vicki

better than his original last year: “sori! RIGHT number!”

    • Chip Rodriguez

It’s not quite “Curses, Zoiled again”, but it’s one of his more amusing calls for sure.

      • The Great Gonzo

        That. Is. Garbage.

  • RetroRob

I’m thinking Brian McCann is in the firm lead for the back-up catcher position. Don’t see Romine or Murphy passing him.

    • Dalek Jeter

Girardi unilaterally calls up Romine and trades McCann, because we need to have a defense first catcher.

      • Chip Rodriguez

        still haunted by Stewie?

  • MartinRanger

So is Workman throwing batting practice or

  • The Great Gonzo

OK, ESPN.com can bite it. I have heard the same promo for The Real Housewives on New York about 90 times. Its hurting my soul, and whoever green lit that promo should be shot.

  • Dan

I’m excited about Pineda, but I worry that he hasn’t thrown enough innings to break with the team in 2 weeks. If they don’t get him up to 80 pitches an outing before the end of spring training, then I think they’ll go with Phelps and start Pineda in AAA.

    • CountryClub

Threw 60 today. He’ll throw 75 in his next game and 90 the game after that. He’s in line to be ready for the season.

  • Dalek Jeter

Apparently Austin Romine took the name Kevin. /Susan Waldman’d

  • CountryClub

Just an fyi that the ESPN gun had Pineda 87 – 92. Innings 3 – 5 he was 87 – 88 with one 90 mixed in.

  • The Great Gonzo

John Kruk just said DHs are not players. I would argue that Kruk is not a real broadcaster.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

This coming from the guy best known for saying “I’m not an athlete. I’m a ballplayer.”

I wish John Kruk very bad things.

    • OB/GYN Kenobi

He barely rates as being of subhuman intelligence.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Well this has been a nice little game and thread.

    A swarm of bees?

  • The Great Gonzo

Zolio. Almonte. King of the non-4th Outfielders.

Has anyone ever seen Zealous Wheeler and FHOFer Ronnie Mustelier in the same place?

  • Chip Rodriguez

Love Teixeira’s response to the bee issue.

    • OB/GYN Kenobi

Please tell me that’s photoshopped. Or do they always keep honey in the dugout?

    • Cheval Anonyme

Teixeira knows bees have something to do with honey; but as usual, he is a little confused about the exact relationship.

  • willie w

if Pineda isn’t a starter then the yanks simply don’t know what they are doing
