Spring Training Game Thread: Yankees @ Nationals

The Yankees made the cross-state trip to Viera to play the Nationals this afternoon, though the game will not be on television anywhere in New York. It will be on MASN for those of you near the beltway, otherwise it’s or nothing. Here are the Yankees and Nationals lineups. CC Sabathia is starting and, if I’m not mistaken, this will be the first time Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner play the outfield together. Time to develop some communication. First pitch is scheduled for a little after 1pm ET. Talk about the game here if you’re watching.

  1. RobertGKramer@AOL.Com says:

    Let’s go Yankees!

  2. warren says:

Being in dc for school its nice to have the game on an actual tv. I really hope the masn gun is off cause its clocking all of sabathia’s fastballs at 86 and he’s not hitting his location with it at all

  3. RobertGKramer@AOL.Com says:

Werth should be playing for the Sux!

  4. Vincent Vega says:

    How’s CC look?

  5. DERP says:

    Matthew Pouliot ?@matthewpouliot
Sabathia’s last 3 FBs in first: 86, 86, 85 according to MASN gun.

    Matthew Pouliot ?@matthewpouliot
They were talking about MASN having a slow gun previously, but Jordan Zimmermann was hitting 92 in the top of the inning.

  6. TWTR says:

    Any reports on CC’s velo?

    • RobertGKramer@AOL.Com says:

      Tops 88 so far!

    • Vincent Vega says:

    • Darren says:

According to everybody, it’s nothing to worry about. CC will magically transform into the bastard love child of Andy Pettitte, Jimmy Key and Jamie Moyer, getting by on craftiness, guile (not Aaron), and wit.

      • Havok9120 says:

Yes, you alone have been clear-eyed on this topic.

        Thank you, sir.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner says:

Yes, because anything that’s not “shoot him in the leg now” means we’re sheep.

        • Tanakapalooza Floozy says:

          More Pollyanna, but yeah.

Seriously though, I’m seriously really worried about him after last year. Seriously.

          • Jim Is A (Bored) Peckerhead says:

There’s real reason to be worried. There’s real reason to have patience. These are not conflicting emotions, yet Darren only chooses the first.

          • Jorge Steinbrenner says:

I’m concerned too, but my concern is proportionate to what time of year it is. There’s always plenty of time to panic. There’s no race to be first to do so.

Also, five pitchers with very high upside, hopefully, in the rotation. Someone is going to falter.

            • Tanakapalooza Floozy says:

Agreed with both of you. Weird to think that there’s a distinct possibility that CC is our worst starter this year.

              • Jorge Steinbrenner says:

It’s “possible.” Still not something I’d bet on.

If it winds up being that way, then my hope is that what they’ve built around him is good enough.

      • nycsportzfan says:

Could he be building his arm strength as the spring goes along? I’d be pretty surprised if he wasen’t consistently in the 90-93 range once season begins. And even in this shaky start, he did strikeout a guy per inning which is pretty good.

  7. RetroRob says:

I wonder if CC will ever break 90 again.

  8. Havok9120 says:

I wonder if he’s throwing cutters and what effect that would have on velocity.

I really don’t care much about that though. He looks like he could be pretty darn effective if the command comes around. He’s fooling a lot of these guys with his offspeed stuff.

    • RetroRob says:

Cutters do come in at a lower velocity. Some believe that throwing them causes lost velocity on fastballs, although not quite sure why. Then there is the difficulty of throwing a cutter and a change up, a pitch that CC needs.

In other words, I’m not quite convinced on this cutter addition yet.

      • Havok9120 says:

Nor am I. But it certainly isn’t weird to be trying something new this early in ST. Most such things don’t stick.

  9. Chris says:

Is Pineda scheduled to pitch this afternoon?

  10. nycsportzfan says:

First kinda ugly outing by someone that matters this spring for the yanks, in CC today. Albeit, he did strikeout 3 in 3inn which is solid.

  11. Mickey Scheister says:

CC’s getting squeezed out there meanwhile Ells gets called out on a pitch up and off the plate. A pitchers performance is only as good as the ump calling balls and strikes and of course the level of competition.

  12. RobertGKramer@AOL.Com says:

    CC out!

  13. RobertGKramer@AOL.Com says:

Anna tripped on McCann’s mask and knocked McCann over!

    • Mickey Scheister says:

Zealous Wheeler is whom the announcers are saying it was that knocked McCann over. Pretty funny to watch, now that everyone is okay.

      • RobertGKramer@AOL.Com says:

Anna and Wheeler look nothing alike!

        • Mickey Scheister says:

I thought it was Anna at first glance but I deferred to the “professional”, at least he corrected his mistake albeit an inning or two later.

      • Mickey Scheister says:

And he corrected himself. These announcers jobs are tougher this time of year but cross reference the number of the player before you state a players name a good 5-10 times incorrectly. A betcha a brain scientist wouldn’t have made such a mistake.

  14. Chip Rodriguez says:

ouch. Doesn’t look like I missed much from CC.

Nunee gets the first hit, and the helmet goes flying.

  15. Tanakapalooza Floozy says:

    Zimmerman perfect in 4IP.

  16. Kyle says:

What was CC top Velo today ..?

  17. RobertGKramer@AOL.Com says:

Gonna pull the plug here. Much easier to post on a Facebook group!

  18. Eddardo Nuney says:

For the life of me I can’t figure out why Ichiro is still on this ballclub and Zolio is relegated to the minors.

    • nycsportzfan says:

Speed, overall defense would be my first 2 guesses.

      • Fin says:

For the life of me I cant figure out how anyone could wonder. Ichiro is being payed $6m, and certainly cant be sent down, or traded it seems. Therefore, they will send the guy to AAA that has options (possibly gaining a year of control, I don’t know) and not waste Hal’s 6m while retaining depth in the outfield. Zolio, certainly could be better than Ichiro but that’s far from some sort of certainty, and if I were a betting man, I would bet on very similar production out of them. So its not like the Yankees are holding a top prospect down, but a guy that seems to be more a 4th outfielder than anything else.

    • The Great Gonzo says:

Because you didn’t change your name to Zeddardio Almonte….

Shit. Shit shit shit shit… Ignore that please.

  19. nycsportzfan says:

    Anyone see Nuny’s triple?

  20. nycsportzfan says:

Matt Daley has looked great this spring.

  21. jg233 says:

I like the yanks rotation even if CC turns into Jamie Moyer…

  22. Lou dog says:

CC is going to be a great second lefty out of the bullpen.

  23. jg233 says:

Sign Ervin Santana while you still can…

  24. Tanakapalooza Floozy says:

Solarte went 1-1 and is now batting .611.
