Game 23: Back Home

That was one eventful road trip. During the seven games through Tampa and Boston, the Yankees managed to turn a triple play, lose Ivan Nova to Tommy John surgery, win three blowouts, lose two blowouts, lose Michael Pineda to a ten-game suspension, and make 18 roster moves. Yes, 18.

Thankfully, that is over with the Yankees are back in the Bronx for a nine-game homestand. They’re stuck playing with a 24-man roster for another nine games because of Pineda, but whatever. At least they get to sleep in their own beds. Mike Trout and the Angels are in town for three games this weekend, so we’re going to hear a lot about how they are always tough on the Yankees even though that hasn’t been true for about five years now. Anyway, here is the Angels lineup and here is the Yankees lineup:

  1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury
  2. SS Derek Jeter
  3. RF Carlos Beltran
  4. DH Alfonso Soriano
  5. 1B Mark Teixeira
  6. C Brian McCann
  7. LF Brett Gardner
  8. 2B Brian Roberts
  9. 3B Yangervis Solarte
    RHP Hiroki Kuroda

It is cloudy and chilly in New York this evening, and there is some rain the forecast later tonight. Doesn’t look like it will be a factor unless the game goes to extra innings. First pitch is scheduled for a little after 7pm ET and you can watch the game on YES. Enjoy.

Rotation Update: As expected, Joe Girardi confirmed David Phelps will start against the Mariners on Wednesday in place of Pineda. The timing of that a) lines Pineda up to start the day his suspension expires, and b) gives Kuroda, Masahiro Tanaka, and Vidal Nuno an extra day of rest next week.

  • Dalek Jeter

I missed Raul…might break out my old handle for the game. Hopefully he goes 3-3 with 3 solo shots and the Yankees win 12-3.

    • RetroRob

He’s a very hot-and-cold player, and has been very cold of late. I hope returning to Yankee Stadium doesn’t turn him hot again. Raul was a favorite and I’d like to see him do well. Just not against the Yankees.

      • Dalek Jeter

In a perfect world, for me at least, he’d do well but it wouldn’t affect the outcome of the game.

    • The Guns of Navarone

For some reason I thought he killed the Yanks last season. I mean, he did hit 3 HR but only hit .158

    • TWTR

For a player that looks like he is running in quicksand for his first few steps out of the batters box, he is pretty productive, but as a Yankee, he was really only good at home.

  • vicki

i hope our 7-8-9-1 run all over those fuckers; shouldn’t be too hard with hank conger back there.

    payback.

    • Dalek Jeter

Nah, Gardy stole his week’s quota of bases yesterday.

      /trololol

  • RetroRob

I am surprised that MLB teams and the Players’ Union agreed to a rule that a suspended player can’t be replaced on the roster.

Beyond that, could the Yankees have sent Pineda down to AAA and replaced him that way, while he serves the ten days in AAA? As I write it, I know the answer is no. Even if he was sent to the minors (and he does have an option), the suspension would no doubt have to be served when he was called up.

Translation: For the Kingdom and Glory of Prussia, and for his magesty, King Friedrich the Great.

  • The Guns of Navarone

I get anxious now whenever I see a ground ball. Only took three weeks for this infield to mess with my mind

  • TheRealGreg

    Ibanez hitting cleanup.

Scoscia going with the stadium sample

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Ibanez has been batting cleanup since Hamilton got hurt.

  • RetroRob

He was “stunned” leaving St. Louis? Come on, Michael.

  • Yangeddard Solarte

Same lineup as yesterday. They will crush LHP like they always do. This is their best lineup.

  • The City

anyone in SD with ATT know why the game is ‘blacked out’ on the Angels channel?

  • vicki

    brendan ryan woulda had it.

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

      Syphilis?

      Oh! The ball. Duh…

    • RetroRob

He was trying for it, but Tampa’s a long way off. He was only in northern Pennsylvania when it got through the infield.

  • TheRealGreg

Was a big mistake in hindsight to dump Ibanez and get Travis Hafner

    • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

And the net effect on last year’s team would have been null.

      • TheRealGreg

You are correct, statistically. Both with a -.2 WAR.

        Well done.

Of course, I hope that is ballpark adjusted.

        • RetroRob

Not a good comparison. Ibanez played about 2/3 of his games in the OF last year and is a poor OFer. That pulled his WAR down, basically undoing much of the good he did with the bat. His OPS+ was over 120. He would have been a excellent DH compared to Hafner, who generated no value with his bat.

It’s also not fair to say the Yankees dumped Ibanez. He signed elsewhere, no doubt because he didn’t want to wait for the Yankees to make a decision on what they planned to do.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Welcome to the weekend, fellow seamheads.

    Let’s play ball.

    • Dalek Jeter

      What’s a weekend?

      • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

        Something teachers and children enjoy.

  • TheRealGreg

Okay. Who was shocked that they got Kendrick there that easily?

  • The Guns of Navarone

Soriano hitting .280 with a .326 OBP!?! I normally don’t look at numbers much early in the season, but that really surprised me based on what I’ve been watching from him. I could’ve sworn his OBP was .280 something just a few days ago.

    • Dalek Jeter

It’s early enough in the season for that to happen, The game on Tuesday I saw Napoli’s average jump 7 points from one hit on Gameday.

    • forensic

In the last 8 games he’s gone from .204/.250/.429 to .280/.326/.500.

Of course, he’s always been a streaky hitter, so that’s not overly surprising. Just gotta hope the good ones end up outweighing the bad ones.

  • baravelli

Boy oh boy. To anyone here inclined to complain about Michael Kay and the YES booth, you should know how good we have it. MLB.TV is blacked out here in LA, so I’m stuck with the Angels announcers on regular TV, and they are terrible. Dopey, cliched, and I can hear the FJM article writing itself in my head at everything they say.

    • forensic

      Yes, they are absolutely horrible.

    • Dalek Jeter

Can they be worse than John and Suzyn?

Suzyn already tonight has said the 2002 Angels had no sluggers, despite half of their regular line-up slugging .490 or better, and said that CJ only asked for a chance to start because Texas signed Neftali Feliz (who they signed as a starter).

  • RetroRob

It’s not a fad, although we will see more players hitting the other way. Next generation of players. What was old will be new again.

  • TheRealGreg

Kuroda, like the last start, doesn’t have that splitter. We saw him unable to put away hitters in Tampa and we see it there.

  • The Guns of Navarone

Certainly something to be said for fly ball pitchers on this team. Holy shit.

  • forensic

Boy, 4 hits (now 5 hits) already. This isn’t starting very nicely for Kuroda.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Conger Eel

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

      Bastard

  • TheRealGreg

He doesn’t have anything at all.

  • TheRealGreg

    Once again, 0-2

    • The Guns of Navarone

0-2 fastball too. Not fooling too many hitters so far this season calling that pitch.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Tar up, Hirok!

  • Yangeddard Solarte

Had him 0-2 and let him hit a double. Hiroki just doesn’t look right. Better get Phelps up. Soccia is putting on a clinic tonight.

    • The Guns of Navarone

Can’t let the bottom of the order score three runs before Trout and Pujols have had a chance to do damage. Doesn’t bode well.

  • Dalek Jeter

I mean, they got a run…but if Girardi had bunted with 2nd & 3rd, no out in the first with anybody put a pitcher at the plate? I’d hate that play.

    • The Guns of Navarone

Yeah that was dumb, IMO. Way too early in the game for that nonsense especially when you have Kuroda on the ropes. I thought giving him that out really helped him settle down.

      • TheRealGreg

But again, he knows that Wilson owns us.

      • Rolling Doughnut

        +1.

      • Dalek Jeter

Agreed. In that position I loved trading an out for a run.

    • TheRealGreg

Its all about circumstance. He knows that CJ Wilson owns us so he only needs a few runs to secure a victory.

      • Dalek Jeter

Yes, because past results are always indicative of future outcome. Especially when the Yankees are returning exactly 1 starter from the 2013 team and the most experienced starter has 30 ABs against him and hasn’t faced him since 2012. I’m sure Scocia knows exactly what Wilson’s gonna give him tonight and we should just all go home.

        • TheRealGreg

There’s a reason they are brought up so much.

And so far through two, they are coming up trumps.

          • Dalek Jeter

I’d argue (prior to the Stewart homer) it’s easily 4 or 4 runs for the Angels if Socia doesn’t sacrifice there.

            • TheRealGreg

Doesn’t matter now. They have 5 runs.

              • TheRealGreg

Of course, that’s a bit of a fallacy

          • Dalek Jeter

Your argument also doesn’t take into account the added bonus of possibly knocking out an opponent’s starter early in the game, hamstringing their bullpen for the entire series.

      • Johnny

I think Scioscia would call for a bunt there regardless.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Scioscia’s been squeezing at stupid times for 15 years now.

  • BigBlueAL

Is the main RAB page still under maintenance for the rest of you?? The only way I can find new posts is thru the RAB links on Twitter.

    • forensic

      Working fine for me.

      • BigBlueAL

Ita weird, even when I click on the home link from this page it takes to me the under maintenance page. I guess I should clear my cookies to see if that works.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Did you clear your cache?

      • BigBlueAL

Yeah I did it right after Forensic’s reply and that worked.

  • King George

Very slowly and slyly, Kuroda is looking worse and worse. It’s early in the season, but he’s gone from dependable to shaky from basically August of last year to now.

    • Rolling Doughnut

I don’t think you can compare his outings at the end of last year to his shaky starts this season. They are two completely different situations.

      • Johnny

It’s just alarming because of his age…one of these years he’s going to turn into a pumpkin.

I’m still hoping maybe he just doesn’t have a feel for the split/slider due to the cold and will improve. But it could just as easily be the beginning of the end, sadly.

      • The Guns of Navarone

Why not? It’s not really comparing them… but it is worrisome that his awful performance from the last two months of last season has continued so far. Again, if he were 29 instead of 30 it would be a different argument.

  • Yangeddard Solarte

I thought Scoscia managed circles around Girardi in that 2nd inning. Put runners in motion which led to a run, safety squeezed which led to another run. Girardi just seems to be sitting back and waiting for the 3 run-HR. Might not come against Wilson.

  • Sterlin’ Stalin

At least kuroda didnt wait until august to start sucking this season. Gives us time to go after an improvement

  • Steinbrenner’s Ghost

    HA!

Paulie never heard of Bill James

  • Johnny

Kay: “Bill James is the father of metrics”

    LOL

    • Dalek Jeter

All metrics? Damn, Michael I didn’t realize the father of all forms of measurement was born so recently. Aristotle must be pissed he’s not getting consideration.

  • CMed21

Kuroda is just flat out terrible today. Batters are laying off his split and are teeing off his fastball.

  • The Guns of Navarone

Welp, that was fun. What’s not fun is being a part of the Yankee bullpen right now. No rest for the weary.

  • Chip Rodriguez

2 run HR now. Oof. This is not Kuroda’s A-game, that’s for sure.

    • CMed21

Not even his C-game, he’s serving up BP today.

  • John ducI

Atleast he rangers are on. Bad night for kuroda fuck it

    • The Guns of Navarone

      THIS

  • Yangeddard Solarte

He gets Trout, Pujols and Ibanez and then blows up again. This ain’t good. Already down Nova and Hiroki looks cooked in April.

    • John ducI

He has been fine every start except this one… Cooked? No. You must be baked.

      • King George

Not sure what games you’ve been watching but Kuroda has flat out sucked in about 75-80% of his starts.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

This is the second time he’s allowed more than three runs.

          • King George

That’s not really saying a whole lot, Mike. In 3 of his 5 starts, he’s given up 3 runs or more. And last game (the game he gave up 3 runs) he didn’t even go 6 innings. And that’s three starts in a row where he’s given up 3 or more. Not exactly amazing.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting

Not even close to flat out sucked, either.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

You and I have very different opinions of what “flat out sucked” means then. Nova flat out sucked. Kuroda just hasn’t been as good as last year. Came into the start with a 102 ERA+.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    He needs to tar up

  • TheRealGreg

He hasn’t been on his A game since last August. You have to wonder now if this is the end for him, or at least coming towards the end.

    • The Guns of Navarone

      Wally Matthews, is that you?

      • King George

        No, he’s being rational though.

  • Steinbrenner’s Ghost

    Time to call Andy.

    • vicki

      tracy mcgrady!

  • will

can someone wipe some tar on kurodas jersey?

  • The Guns of Navarone

And of course the Rangers outplay the Flyers all game until the most overrated goalie in the league lets them take the lead.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

lol no one stops that deflection

    • Dr. Martin van Nostrand

if you think that goal is on Lundqvist then you are delusional.

      • The Guns of Navarone

Yeah I didn’t see the deflection at first. I’m a wee bit reactionary.

  • Steinbrenner’s Ghost

one ump after another have been screwing us this season on the strike zone.

I mean, it can’t just all be coincidence.

    • WhittakerWalt

Every fan thinks the umps are screwing their team.

  • TheRealGreg

So far, the past history has proven accurate.

  • TheRealGreg

Kuroda had a higher WHiP than Sabathia coming into this start, despite a lower ERA.

He, Pineda, and Nova all the sudden are either gone, shaky, or dumb.

    • Dalek Jeter

Pineda says absolutely nothing about his ability to pitch going forward, and since you’re such a student of looking to the past why is it okay for Wilson’s number’s against the Yankees but we’re so concerned about Kuroda having a bit of a rough patch when he’s spent 8 years dominating the league? Seriously, I know I’ve asked you this question before…but if you’ve got such a negative outlook about the Yankees, why bother watching? If I thought everything about a team was going to suck or was cause for concern I’d go do something less upsetting.

      • TheRealGreg

        Because of his age.

    • Michahiro Pinaka

Hey, Greg, the Red Sox are beating the Jays 6-0.

      • Dalek Jeter

Well, with this loss combined with that win it’s clear that the season is over. We should trade Tanaka while he has some value and has one bad start that shows that his splitter is clearly not as good as everybody says it is.

        • Michahiro Pinaka

This is exactly what I imagined went through Greg’s mind.

    • Chip Rodriguez

Kuroda also struggled a fair bit in April 2012, and I remember a lot of us here were worried whether he could hang in the AL east. He kinda worked out.

  • Winter

The booth’s going on and on about contracts like this is the eight inning of a blowout. It’s not exactly a close game, but six innings is plenty of time to score 5 runs.

    • TheRealGreg

Well they are going to have to do it against the bullpen because Wilson is dealing right now.
      1 hit through 3.1

      • The Guns of Navarone

Wilson can be prone to a big inning… throwing a lot of pitches. You never know. This offense is crazy inconsistent so far though.

        • TheRealGreg

Not if Kuroda gives up 6 runs an outing

  • Yankee$

Anyone else getting a ton of browser redirects from RAB site?

  • WhittakerWalt

Is Wilson actually this good, or are the Yankees just playing desperate?

    • TheRealGreg

Wilson in 4 starts at Yankee Stadium is 2-0 with a 1.95 ERA

      Wilson is good

    • vicki

if we were feeling charitable we could acknowledge how physically and, especially, psychically exhausting the road trip was?

      • WhittakerWalt

It’s probably pretty demoralizing to watch your starter throwing BP.

        • vicki

          that too.

  • WhittakerWalt

Wow. Get Hiroki out of there.

  • will

can someone wipe some pinetar on kurodas jersey?

  • WhittakerWalt

Why do Ma and Pa keep talking about how Solarte has “made EVERY play in the field?” I’ve seen him flub quite a few balls out there, and look generally pretty shaky. Not Nunez bad, but certainly nothing to write home about.

    • The Guns of Navarone

I think he’s looked much better at third than at 2nd. His range isn’t good at all… not enough for 2nd base, in my opinion.

  • Dalek Jeter

John wants a bullpen just full of lefties. He legitimately thinks that the team needs at least 3 or 4.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Looked like Beltran caught a touch of Bobby Abreau-itis there.

    • Dalek Jeter

Well with the week he had I wouldn’t be surprised. I’ve never seen anybody hit a wall as hard as he did in Tampa without at least leaving the game, then he slid into the wall in Fenway last night.

  • The Guns of Navarone

I can’t remember the last loss that wasn’t excruciating to watch

    • Winter

It seems like the Yankees are either all there–pitching, hitting, defense, everything–or all not. They’re dominating wins and painful, sloppy losses.

    • Chip Rodriguez

Personally, I prefer the blowout losses.

I would have HATED to be on the receiving end of the extra innings fight in Tampa, or the 3-2 game against Boston that had me nervous until the last out.

      • The Guns of Navarone

It gives me extra ajeda in blowouts because you have to watch four hours of nondescript relievers throw 50 pitches to get 4 outs… and when by some miracle a ball gets hit at someone they fuck that up too. All while the offense goes down in order, of course.

        Not fun.

  • itsallhowuseeit

Can someone please slap some pine tar on Kurodas neck

  • No 2013 again

Blowout win, blowout loss, blowout win, blowout loss.. At least we can expect a win tomorrow.

  • Wow

One day this team will figure out a way to beat these clowns. I can’t stand it when we play the Angels. Easily my least favorite team to play.

If by “one day” you mean “the last half decade.” The Angels haven’t given the Yankees fits for a little while, now.

I think we’re going to set a team record for position players pitching this year.
