Monday Night Open Thread

Mark Teixeira has Grade I hamstring strain
Kuroda, patient lineup lead Yankees to 4-2 win over Orioles in home opener

Losing David Robertson to a Grade I groin strain really stinks, but otherwise the home opener went splendidly this afternoon. Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, and Mariano Rivera were on hand for the ceremonial first pitch — I’m going to have to start a petition to get Bernie Williams some well-deserved respect — plus beating Buck Showalter and the Orioles is always fun. The first pitch video is above, if you missed it.

This is your open thread for the night. This afternoon’s game will be replayed on YES at 7pm ET, though I don’t know if they’ll show any of the pre-game ceremonies again. The Devils and Nets are playing, plus the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Game is on as well. Talk about those games, this afternoon’s game, or anything else right here.

Minor League Update: There will be no Down on the Farm post tonight because none of the affiliates are playing. High-A Tampa had a scheduled off-day and Triple-A Scranton, Double-A Trenton, and Low-A Charleston were all rained out. Here’s the scoreboard if you don’t believe me. DotF returns tomorrow, assuming someone actually plays.

Should have gotten Bernie to perform the National Anthem.

    • Yankee$

      That would have nice.

    • Dalek Jeter

That would actually have been the coolest way to include him. Yankees PR department, hire this guy if the Yankees make the playoffs, or just cut him a huge check for that idea to open the ALDS/ALCS/WS.

      • TheDeen

Thanks–wouldn’t mind the cash, but would rather just hear Bernie play. As a smooth jazz musician myself, aside from baseball, dude is amazing at playing music too! Would love to see him involved in a musical capacity in some way in one of these tributes to the late 90s….. I don’t think there’s a better way to see it happen either!

      • TheDeen

also, if this were Facebook, I would give your post a like. That is all.

Whoever created this “Core Four” velvet rope gimmick needs to be given their walking papers.

    • Yankee$

You kidding? It’s a marketing gimmick now. It will make the Yanks mucho dinero for the next 50 years.

    • Wheels

Core Four is looking more like the Gray Four.

      • Wheels

        *are looking(?)

        • Dalek Jeter

          Is…I’m pretty sure..

          • Now Batting

“Is” is correct when referring to the Core Four as a single entity. If four was lowercase “are” would be correct.

    • bob

I agree it’s bs. Bernie was a major part of all 4 championship squads he was on. Jorge was barely there in 96.

      • vicki

true, but you still better watch your mouth.

  • Yankee Fan 1

Love me some Bernie, but I get why he’s not included. This core 4 thing came about during the 09 run, because they were the last remaining dynasty guys. When I think of the dynasty era, Bernie is most certainly included ( along with Paulie and some others)

    • The Other Matt

I’ve always felt like Bernie was slighted, when it comes to discussing the CORE guys of the dynasty. Especially since he was a home grown guy player, and just an overall good player at that. I understand why it’s the “Core 4″, but it does seem like somewhat of a slight, even if only subconsciously.

      • Yankee Fan 1

I see why some people think it’s a slight. Unfortunately for Bernie, he was born a few years before the rest of the guys. I do wonder how he feels about it

        • Dalek Jeter

I don’t think it was so much a “slight” as it’s just disappointing that he wasn’t there…he was arguable the 2nd best player of the “core 5.”

          • RetroRob

Yes. That is my point with the “Core Four” theme. It’s too easy and can lead to the exclusion of other Yankee greats from the dynasty years, and I think we’re seeing that with Bernie.

Nunez was dealt to Minnesota in exchange for minor league lefty pitcher Miguel Salbaran.

The Curse of the RAB prospect watch is well underway…

Yanks’ll be fine. This is a gritty scrappy gutty bunch of ballplayers.

    • RetroRob

Let’s nominate a top Red Sox prospect for the Prospect Watch next time.

Is there anywhere I can watch the player introductions? Just something I love watching every year. Don’t live in NY so I didnt get a chance to see them.

  • CountryClub

Good win today. Now let’s go Uconn!

    • Wheels

Hey, whenever Kentucky wins a national championship, the Yankees usually win the World Series in the same year.

      • CountryClub

Disproven in 11, so I’m safe.

        • Wheels

You guys are looking good so far.

Speed vs size. Should be an interesting game.

I hope the yankees are teaching Michael Pineda how to run the bases so he does not hurt himself like Ching Ming Wang did.
