DotF: Bird doubles twice in Tampa’s loss

By

Triple-A Scranton (2-1 loss to Durham)

  • 1B Ramon Flores: 0-4
  • 3B Scott Sizemore: 2-4, 1 RBI
  • 2B Dean Anna: 0-3, 1 BB
  • LF Zoilo Almonte & SS Zelous Wheeler: 1-4, 1 2B — Wheeler stole a base
  • C Austin Romine: 1-4, 1 R, 3 K
  • RHP Chase Whitley: 1 IP, zeroes, 2/0 GB/FB – five of seven pitches were strikes … seems likely he will be called up to the big league team in a few days, and since Alfredo Aceves pitched in relief tonight, Whitley will probably start in place of CC Sabathia on Thursday … Jon Heyman says he even took batting practice today in preparation for the game at Citi Field
  • RHP Brian Gordon: 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 8/3 GB/FB — 64 of 109 pitches were strikes (59%)
  • RHP Brett Gerritse: 2 IP, zeroes, 6/1 GB/FB — 17 of 27 pitches were strikes (63%) … up from High-A Tampa to help cover for some injuries

Double-A Trenton had a scheduled off-day.

High-A Tampa (3-2 loss to St. Lucie)

  • CF Jake Cave: 0-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • SS Cito Culver: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • 1B Greg Bird: 3-4, 2 2B — 7-for-18 (.389) with three doubles and a homer in five games since returning from his back injury
  • DH Dante Bichette Jr.: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 3B Eric Jagielo: 1-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI — 10-for-39 (.256) in his last ten games, but four doubles and three homers too
  • 2B Angelo Gumbs: 0-4, 3 K
  • LHP Conner Kendrick: 6 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 7/5 GB/FB
  • RHP Nick Rumbelow: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K — 20/4 K/BB in ten innings so far

Low-A Charleston (1-0 win over Savannah in ten innings) SS Abi Avelino is currently on the DL for an unknown reason

  • SS Tyler Wade: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
  • DH Aaron Judge: 1-3, 2 BB, 1 K
  • LF-CF Michael O’Neill: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 3 K — walk-off walk … leads the organization with 48 strikeouts
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-4
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-4, 2 K — second in the organization with 41 strikeouts
  • RHP Jaron Long: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 9/4 GB/FB – 54 of 86 pitches were strikes (63%) … the hitting coach’s kid has been really, really good this year
  • LHP Rony Bautista: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 25 of 40 pitches were strikes (63%) … hopefully the 6-foot-7 southpaw moves into the rotation later in the season

  1. RetroRob says:

How long before Brian Gordon makes his return appearance on the big league squad? It’s coming.

  2. Angelo says:

Bird is off to a very nice start. Hoping he continues to rake.

  3. Not Paulie says:

The fact that Michael O’Neill swings and misses as often as he does and hasn’t managed to pull anything yet is a minor miracle.

  4. Samuel says:

As I have been saying for almost two years, if he stays healthy, Greg Bird will be a perennial All-Star in the majors.

Plate discipline, ability to hit for average, gap to gap power, with 20 HR potential. Joe Mauer and Nick Johnson combination with the stick. Plus his baseball IQ will push him to improve around the 1B bag.

    Flat out stud.

  5. Looser trader droids FotDā„¢ says:

Thank god for the farm. The team in the bigs is increasingly painful to watch.

Also, nice job Gerritse. May as well call him up too given the state of our pen.
