Tanaka dominates Twins, Yankees rally late for 3-1 win

Based on his Twitter feed, RHP Ty Hensley made his second start in Extended Spring Training today. No word on how it went, but as long as he’s healthy, I don’t really care about the results.

Triple-A Scranton (7-3 win over Indianapolis)

  • DH Corban Joseph: 0-5
  • 3B Scott Sizemore: 1-5, 1 K
  • SS Zelous Wheeler: 2-4, 1 R
  • C Austin Romine: 3-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI — every once in a while he’ll do this to remind you he’s still only 25 and was pretty well regarded
  • RHP Shane Greene: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 13/1 GB/FB — 62 of 99 pitches were strikes (63%) … there we go, that’s the Shane Greene we saw last season
  • RHP Danny Burawa: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 3/1 GB/FB — 25 of 41 pitches were strikes (61%)

Double-A Trenton Game One (9-4 loss to Portland in seven innings) makeup of the April 7th rainout

  • CF Mason Williams: 1-4, 1 R, 1 SB — back in the lineup after getting pulled from Thursday’s game and sitting Friday
  • LF Ben Gamel: 0-4, 1 K
  • 3B Tyler Austin: 2-4, 2 K, 2 E (fielding, throwing) — still waiting for the power to show up, which might not happen for a while given the wrist problems
  • C Peter O’Brien: 0-3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 PB
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 2-3, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI — 18-for-37 (.486) with five doubles, two triples, and two homers in his last nine games … dude is absolutely on fire
  • RHP Graham Stoneburner: 5.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 8/3 GB/FB, 1 E (throwing) — 59 of 80 pitches were strikes (74%)
  • LHP Cesar Cabral: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 3/0 GB/FB — 14 of 39 pitches were strikes (36%) … boy the wheels have really come off this bus

Double-A Trenton Game Two (4-3 loss to Portland in seven innings)

  • CF Mason Williams: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K
  • LF Ben Gamel & RF Peter O’Brien: both 0-3
  • 1B Tyler Austin: 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI
  • C Gary Sanchez: 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — 13-for-32 (.406) with three doubles and three homers in his last six games
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 1-3, 1 2B — make that 19-for-40 (.475) with six doubles, two triples, and two homers in his last ten games
  • LHP Jeremy Bleich: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 5/4 GB/FB — 58 of 91 pitches were strikes (64%)
  • LHP Fred Lewis: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 5/0 GB/FB — 22 of 37 pitches were strikes (59%)

High-A Tampa was rained out. They’re going to play a doubleheader tomorrow.

Low-A Charleston (8-4 loss to Asheville)

  • RF Aaron Judge: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI — sixth homer of the year … seems like he’s off to a slow start power-wise, but he’s still on pace to hit about 17 homers or so
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-3, 1 BB
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • LHP Ian Clarkin: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 1/7 GB/FB — 51 of 75 pitches were strikes (68%) … 29/7 K/BB in 57.2 innings

The Dominican Summer League season started today. Here is the box score for the DSL Yanks1, but the DSL Yanks2 box score isn’t up yet. Here’s the scoreboard for whenever it shows up. Based on who is on the rosters, OF Leonardo Molina will debut in the Rookie Gulf Coast League next month. The 16-year-old signed for $1.4M last summer.

No Kyle Roller in the lineup? On a plane?

  • Travis Lincoln

    Or getting a day off.

  • lightSABR

Mason had a decent day today (.286/.286/.429 with only one K), so out of curiosity, I looked into his stats for the season.

Turns out there are actually some encouraging things there:

    K%: 11.6% (his best since low-A)

BB%: 12.6% (nearly twice as good as his second-best year)

BABIP: .226 (well below his career norm of .300-ish, which gives you hope that his batting average will rise as the season goes on)

    Steals: 10

    Steal success rate: 91%

Still no power, but maybe he can turn into a .280/.350/.350 guy with 30-ish steals. Maybe? That’d be good for about 100 wRC+, and better performance than half of MLB got out of their CFs last year.

It’s Tanaka day. Let a guy dream.

    • Yanks

The thing about Williams and his BABIP is that he’s making a ton of weak contact.

      • lightSABR

Yeah, I can buy that. His BABIP is way out of line with his career numbers, but it’s actually better than what he did in his brief AA stint last year. So he may just be overmatched by AA pitching. I wish Fangraphs had batted ball data for minor leaguers so that we could get more detail.

Still, the substantial drop in strikeout rate and the large spike in BB rate are good news. A 1.08 BB/K rate? That’s Solartean.

Re. DSL, Yancarlos Baez looks like the only guy worthy of watching down there

    • YankeeGrunt

Yonauris Rodriguez was the other bonus baby from last year and is likely to be the SS for DSL2. He has a rep as a polished defensive SS, we’ll see where the bat is. But paying what we did for Molina meant that we only had money for one other big-ticket signing, so everyone else is low-dollar.

  • perfect double taper

    Stairs is bored in AA.

  • forensic

I read somewhere that Ian Clarkin is awesome. They should call him up to help the rotation right away.

    • Cool Lester Smooth

      Seems reasonable to me.

Cash needs to stop babying these guys!

  • Nettles9

Why was Tamarez sent back to the dsl after gcl last year? Dont typically see that.

    • Danny

Also with any foreign born player, it could certainly be visa issues.

Also he sucked last year, it’s quite possible Yankees’ scouts/officials evaluated him and determined him had no significant future and don’t wanna waste a roster spot/visa on him to play in the GCL.

  • Danny

    As with*

  • CashmanNinja

You can officially put me on the Refsnyder bandwagon. I thought he should have been higher on the prospect list, but he *definitely* is more deserving than a lot of guys ahead of him. The dude is on fire and 9 extra base hits in his last 9 games while almost batting .500. Geez.

  • Cool Lester Smooth

Gotta say, I’m getting pretty excited about Refsnyder. It’s like we finally got one of those Cardinals “just knows how to hit” types.

    • Preston

A younger Matt Carpenter with better base running is fine by me.

  • nycsportzfan

Judge will be going to Tampa within the next month or so, I would think?

Good overall day at the plate for Ty Austin.

  • Dick M

Anyone got a read on Refs defense?

  • Jagielo Unchained

Time for Ref to come up. After a very slow first few weeks he has really had the best year of all the prospects so far. Given the hole at second, we need to move him along quickly to see if we have a within the organization solution.
