Jeter helps AL to 5-3 win in 2014 All-Star Game

Some notes:

  • As expected, the Yankees have sent RHP Bryan Mitchell back down to Triple-A Scranton, reports Matt Kardos. The MLB active roster currently sits at 24 players. Carlos Beltran is expected to be activated off the 7-day concussion disabled list after the All-Star break.
  • RHP Luis Severino has been promoted to Double-A Trenton, according to Josh Norris. That is really, really aggressive. He made four starts and threw 20.2 innings with High-A Tampa. Maybe they’re showcasing him for a trade.
  • Norris says OF Jake Cave was promoted to Trenton from Tampa as well. I wonder if that means OF Mason Williams will be demoted to Tampa for the rest of the season? It wouldn’t be undeserved.
  • LHP Jacob Lindgren was promoted to Tampa from Low-A Charleston, according to his father’s Twitter feed. That makes sense. It probably won’t be his final promotion of the summer either.
  • If you’ve ever wondered what minor leaguers receive when they win an Offensive Player or Pitcher of the Week award, Severino shared it on Twitter. It’s just a paper certificate like you used to get in elementary school.
  • And finally, Ben Badler wrote a pretty great article on C Luis Torrens and his development as a recently converted catcher. You need a subscription to read it, unfortunately.

Triple-A Scranton is off until Thursday for the All-Star break. The actual game is tomorrow night. UTIL Jose Pirela was the only Yankees farmhand selected to the International League squad.

Double-A Trenton is also off until Thursday for the All-Star break and yes, the game is tomorrow night. C Gary Sanchez, C/1B Peter O’Brien, OF Ben Gamel, LHP Matt Tracy, and LHP Tyler Webb are all representing the Thunder. Both Sanchez and O’Brien will participate in the Home Run Derby. Trenton’s coaching staff will also be calling the shots for the Eastern Division Team.

High-A Tampa and Short Season Staten Island both had scheduled off-days.

Low-A Charleston was rained out. They’ll play a doubleheader tomorrow.

Rookie GCL Yanks1 (6-2 win over GCL Yanks2) lumping the two teams together into one section

  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB — played another seven innings as he works his way back from the quad injury

  • DH Alex Palma: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 3B Drew Bridges: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 SB
  • 2B Junior Valera: 3-5, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 SB — 11-for-35 (.314) with ten walks and five strikeouts in his last ten games

  • RHP Alex Polanco: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 8/8 K/BB in seven innings

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Jake Cave going to AA as well.

    • Angelo

It’ll get interesting if he performs well in AA.

    • nycsportzfan

Caves makes it to Trenton at super speed, and he has the all around game to back it up. This kids a beast!

  • Buddy

Are you TRYING to freak out the prospect huggers with, “Must be showcasing him for a trade.” ????

    • Rob

I know! FFS knock it off with the showcase talk.

  • Wayne

    No don’t trade Luis Severino!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No it will come back to haunt us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    The season is over!!!!!!!!!
We are not winning the World Series this year!!!!!!!!
    Hal what the fuck!!!!!!!!!!!
    What are you doing!!!!!!

    • JKK

Totally agree. Yanks should be smart and let this season go. Keep good players such as Severino, Clarkin and build them for the future. Let’s sell off players and get prospects back.

Unless we trade Severino for Price, it would be a bad trade.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

      The circle is complete.

  • Jeff

I disagree what does two starts at most at AA do for Severino before the deadline do? I assume if a scout likes Severino they trade for him irrelevant of what transpires in the next two weeks. Looks to me like the Yankees are just being aggressive.

    • alz

Could potentially damage his value too. Don’t get why you would be so aggressive with him, he is only 20, so he isn’t like Lindgren who was a college pitcher.

    • Angelo

Well, now Severino is a prospect in the upper minors. If he performs well, in the next few weeks in Trenton, I imagine his value would go up somewhat. It also shows what the Yankees value him at to other teams.

I definitely understand what you’re saying though.

  • Angelo

I’m pretty shocked that Severino is being pushed to Double-A. I hope he’s not getting traded. If he performs well, things will get pretty exciting.

  • alz

Not sure why you would promote Severino so fast. Promoting him to AA now sets him up for coming up next year as a 21 year old. Rather let him learn his craft in the minors, instead of having him spending his first several years not great. 20 innings at Tampa isn’t enough.

    • Ron

Rather see them be aggressive then the babying crap they always did in the past that hasn’t produced anything. If he fails he goes back down and uses the experience to get better.

      • Cool Lester Smooth

        The Yankees…babying pitching prospects…

      • Angelo

When have the Yankees “babied” a pitching prospect when it comes to promotions?

        Eh, I don’t even know why I bother…

  • Bo Knows

Gil Patterson was aggressive with many of the A’s pitchers when they were prospects. I doubt the Yankees are going to promote someone just to look better at trades, that’s not something they’ve done.

    • Scott

I had forgotten the Yanks now have Patterson as the minor league pitching guru. You are probably right that he is pushing the promotion.

I don’t see it as a set up for a trade, just deserves to be in AA. The Yanks want to see if he is for real. AA is where you separate the men from the boys.

Maybe due to innings limits and controlling things, the plan is to get him some major league experience in the pen in September.

  • Now Batting

Seems like with a lot of pitchers today you only get so many bullets before an injury/surgery. For top tier talents with questionable mechanics why waste them in High A?

  • No More

Finally, the Yanks are not acting like some over protective mother from the suburbs helicoptering over her children – GO SEVERINO!!!

  • hornblower

The radar gun works the same at Tampa as it does in Trenton. If the Yankees were going to trade the kid they would leave him where he could excel against inferior competition.

    • Joel

Except no, because any team who might be interested in him because of his success at Single-A would be more interested after seeing him succeed (if he does) at AA. That’s the point, if they are indeed showcasing him.

      • RetroRob

True, but if he gets knocked around it could decrease his value. They might have more to lose than gain if the goal is to trade him.

It may be exactly as it appears. They think he’s too advanced for A ball and want to see him challenged at a higher level.

      • wilcymoore27

If Severino performs well in AA, all the more reason to keep him.

      • Rick

Any team making their evaluation, or changing it, based on two or three AA starts needs to fire their entire front office … immediately.

  • Ben

Im all for pushing these guys. If this is some half assed moved by Cashman to try and salvage this season, F that. Half a season of Cliff Lee or any number of stop gap, over the hill band aids isnt going to fix the long term problems this team has. The “WS or the year was a complete waste of time” mantra need to be put out to pasture.

  • W.B. Mason Williams

    Alright, Luis.

    Go for broke.

  • Wayne

Please Hal don’t trade Luis Severino for Max Scherzer.
Max Scherzer is an injury waiting to happen.
    No please Hal!!!!
    Don’t do it!!!
    That I think may happen.
This is why they are putting Luis Severino in aa in order to get Max Scherzer.
He does not go that long in a game, no more than six innings.
Luis Severino is a future ace!!
    Don’t trade him Hal.

    • IRememberCelerinoSanchez

Why would Detroit, which is one of the two best teams in the A.L. and a legitimate WS contender, trade their ace? Especially for a minor leaguer.

      Not happening.

    • Get Phelps Up

You would be insane to not trade Severino straight up for Scherzer.

      • Ron

You do know who you replied to right?

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

We slowly descend deeper and deeper in Eddard territory.

      • Angelo

I didn’t know we were responding to Wayne these days.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

This is all my fault. I created this.

    • Jim Is A (Bored) Peckerhead

What the fuck is wrong with you

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

        Wayne, are you Dutch?

Over the years, I’ve learned that the Dutch tend to overuse punctuation the most on the Internet.

        • Scott

          I laughed.

Jorge you come up with some crazy stuff that is hilarious. One of the reasons I check the site.

The other is to read guys like Mick, Wayne and Eddard, on days when my blood pressure is low. Their posts jack it up pretty quick, until my face gets red and people in the office think I am trying to fart.

          • Jorge Steinbrenner

In my years of massive internet procrastinaion, before RAB became my #1 time-waster, I spent a lot of time of music tech sites where I interacted with some folks which, unlike your typical RAB troll, actually were quite scary at times…..and they all used way too many exclamation points……and they were all Dutch.

        • Yankee$

Nobody overuses punctuation like my sister, and she isn’t Dutch…ergo, Wayne might be my sister.

          • Donnybaseball72

More than Latinos? Every other FB comments end with JaJaJaJaJaJaJaJaJaJaJaJaJa!!!!

          • Jorge Steinbrenner

There’s a non-zero chance that, at some point, I’ve been trolled by my wife on here.

  • RetroRob

They could just believe that his stuff is too good for A-level ball and want to challenge him at AA.

  • RetroRob

Not sure where I read it (maybe it was on RAB), but Mason Williams’ manager basically said after yesterday’s game that he was overthinking things, or something like that. Wasn’t exactly a warm endorsement, so yeah, I could see him demoted.

    • Scott

Could also leave Mason at AA and put some competition in his face. Maybe he isn’t pushing himself right now and Cave being there will be a wake up call. The Yanks are telling him “he this kid hasn’t been in the system as long as you but is going to move past you, get your shit in gear!”

      • Scott

meant to read “hey”, not he

  • n0exit

The last top pitching prospect the yankees traded was? Exactly. It hasn’t happened before it won’t happen now. Severino has ~30 innings left so about 5 starts, he hasn’t failed this year once I don’t think. Given that Patterson is at Trenton often he probably wants to work with Severino and give him an idea of the things he needs to fix. Like his mechanico.

    • pat

      Ian Kennedy?

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

I realize he didn’t specify it in his comment, but we usually speak of the Yankees never actually doing any of that “top prospect for rental” stuff they get accused of doing.

You’re right on Kennedy, but that was part of having to give up something good to get something good.

        Zach McAllister, folks. Zach McAllister.

    • Coolerking101

Arodys Vizcaíno was a few months away from being rated a top 50 minor league prospect when the Yanks traded him.

  • hornblower

MLB moves are not permitted until after the All-star game. Do we expect to see any movement with the big club?

  • Old Kinderhook

Leonardo Molina is just 16 years old, living away from home and family, playing pro ball in a foreign country. Does anyone know what kind of support the organization provides for him during the 20 hours every day when he’s NOT playing ball? Do they have a program for these kids?

    • wilcymoore27

Good question. I’d like to know the answer, too.

    • Angelo

I thought you screwed up. I didn’t realize anyone younger than 17 played above the DSL levels. That’s incredibly young. He’ll be 17 in a couple of weeks though.

Also, it’s not QUITE 20 hours every day. He sleeps, eats, practices… It’s probably a lot less than 20 hours. To be clear, I’m mostly being a smart ass :)

      • edb

You’re actually accentuating the point Angelo. Who is making sure he eats sleeps and practices as he should? Plenty of 16 yr Olds still have to be told to turn off the Xbox and go to bed.

    • Chris G

I may be late to the party but you should watch Sugar. It is a very good movie written by a former prospect from the Dominican Republic. They pretty much don’t have anyone.

  • Roy Munson

maybe they just really don’t know how to develop and manage young pitching. Making the same mistakes over and over again.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

And, yet, someone else above you is complaining that they baby their pitchers too much.

  • Chris

Read somewhere that the cubs are likely willing to deal Javier Baez for pitching. Would I be crucified here for suggest a package of Severino and a couple other not as highly touted guys?

    • Angelo

Not crazy to consider on the Yankees end. Doubt the Cubs would bite on Severino without another good prospect that is closer to MLB.

Baez’s strike out rate is a little scary though. Could see him flaming out, but the power is obviously very real and that’s huge in MLB right now.

      • bpdelia

Yeah. Baez is kind of scary. Flailing at AAA and still question marks about being a SS. And that k rate is RIGHT on the border of disastrous.

He could bust or be a star. I actually think that’s a pretty good challenge trade. Severino and Murphy for Baez and a low minors lottery ticket arm type.

That’s actually probably a fair deal. But is totally terrifying for both teams. Doubt anyone has the balls to do that.
