Game 85: Fourth of July
Roberts and relievers shine in 6-5 win over Twins
  • Tanuki Tanaka

    Happy today to all.

If yall had a hitter who walks so much that he’d bat 220 and slug 280 but OBP over 360 would you have him on the team?

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

Depends on the position. OBP of .360 isn’t that crazy that I would ignore everything else. .450 yes, .360 maybe.

      • Tanuki Tanaka

Corner outfielder that estimates to 1.5 wins defensively and 50+ stolen bases a year.

(Yes it’s my save file in baseball sims)

    • Not an ace

As a plus defender at shortstop or second base sure.

    • vicki

in view of the New Dead-ball Era, that could be an average DH soon.

      except walks are declining too.

  • Wolfgang’s Fault

Even when Girardi accommodates the press/media by answering their questions, he always seems thisclose to losing it. Barely able to keep himself under control doing this part of his job. After all these years w/the Yankees and 6th year as the Mgr. in the biggest media city in the world, he still doesn’t trust these folks. Chill out & get over yourself, Joe. Meredith & the other reporters are asking you these questions ’cause the FANS want to hear/read what your thoughts were/are about that day’s game. Lighten up and have some fun with it when you can. If you can learn anything from Gehrig’s speech it’s that you’ve gotta respect the process & the people you interact with, & as it goes without saying, so I’ll “say” it, life’s too short . . . !

    • TheRealGreg

As a Jets fan, I don’t trust the media either.

    • vicki

i like surly joe. it’s sexy.

      • Wolfgang’s Fault

He’s prickly, too, & no, I’m not gonna bother to ask.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

I mean, he’s not as smooth as Torre, but I’d still say he’s way on the upper echelon of “how to manage the media as a manager.” There have been some folks who have been awful at this who’ve passed through New York. Jerry Manuel, for one.

    • Vinnie

You’ve gotta be kidding? Trust the media? in New York? Sweet, innocent Meredith is NOT the New York media. They’re the ones with the dorsal fin and the razor teeth. They tear flesh and wash it down with blood. If they had been around in their present incarnation in 1939, they’d have tried to bribe a nurse to get Gehrig’s medical records and splash the details over the pages of the Mirror and the Daily News, with pictures of victims of the disease.

      • Wolfgang’s Fault

He barely tolerates Meredith, & flat out can’t wait to fly out of the post-game interview room (home & away) when told there are no more questions. Obviously 99% of the questions are pro forma w/boilerplate answers, so no one’s trying to put one over on him. He knows the sports media covering the team need the soundbites to file their reports. He can make it easy or he can make it difficult, but either way, they’ve gotta ask regardless. There are times when its going to be adversarial because that’s the nature of sports in this town. He doesn’t have to view them as adversaries though. Certainly not the everyday beat reporters, & it’s not even wise to be that coiled & wound up w/the nat’l media either. Relax, listen to the question(s), answer them for the umpteenth time today if necessary, make it light & easy when possible, learn the reporters names if you don’t know them already & address them by those names, & don’t reveal what you shouldn’t. Not so hard imo. The video of his post games is just painful to watch for me. I usually don’t view it, but when I do, I usually come away feeling sorry for the YES reporter (now Meredith), & most of the other reporters just trying to get what they need without pissing him off. Makes for an uncomfortable view, & can’t imagine a lot of laughs for the media people. He doesn’t know or even seem to want to schmear people, a useful skill in such a gig. He should try harder.

        • Deep Thoughts

You are nuts. You are indignant on behalf of the sensitivities of a gaggle of baseball beat reporters because you don’t like the manager’s demeanor? Have you ever met a reporter or been in a newsroom? If they are anything approaching actual journalists, the way Joe “treats” them is tantamount to a handjob compared to what actual journalists expect and are accustomed to when questioning sources. Stop being such a moronic concern troll.

          • Wolfgang’s Fault

It was an observation, DT, not a declaration of war. There are things to like about the way he handles a pitching staff, for example, and things that leave something to be desired such as when he’s being questioned during post-game press conferences. If he’s got a problem w/a specific reporter, they can hash it out between themselves. If he thinks the entire fourth estate are a bunch of commies or islamic terrorists, he’s entitled to his opinion but I’d then have to conclude he’s capable of being as much of an asshole as you are. While your affliction seems permanent, Girardi’s been through this drill long enough where a reasonable observer would believe he can do better. It’s too bad you aren’t there to show Joe how to really deal w/the big bad members of the press, DT. If nothing else, I’m sure the lot of them would be impressed w/your quick reflexes, strong grip, & smooth stroke.

Oak/Tor game in the bottom of the 9th and still 0-0…

  • Wayne

What. Changes is cashman talking about?

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Obviously, he’s trading Simon de la Rosa for Bartolo Colon.

      • Ron

Clarkin for price and rays number #1 prospect?

  • TheRealGreg

Niese gets hit flush in the back with a line drive. He kept saying that he was fine but Collins pulls him after 0.1 of an inning.

    • Wolfgang’s Fault

Collins made the correct call (imo). Mets (no team) can afford to have him injure himself or his arm because he tried to throw through whatever contusion(s) he received there. Come back after the ASB w/his health & mechanics in good working order is the wise course to pursue.

  • Oy

Ryan should play more. His offensive numbers are pretty much the same as Jeter’s, in so many less opportunities. Jeter’s no existent defense is nowhere close to Ryan’s. Let Ryan play more and DH Jeter to give Beltran breaks.

    • TheRealGreg

Two non-power hitters though in this weak lineup

      • Oy

Jeter will be in the line up regardless. Ryan at SS and Beltran at DH would be optimal, but we all know that Jeter is not going to be a bench piece.

Honestly, I’d rather have Ryan at SS with Jeter at DH rather than Jeter at SS and Beltran at DH. Ryan’s superb defense >>> Jeter’s horrible fielding and potential pop from Beltran. Beltran has been a pretty shitty hitter this year himself.

        • TheRealGreg

But at least Beltran can give you a homer once in awhile. This lineup is already bereft of power. Playing Jeter and Ryan together ain’t going to cut it.

          • Oy

In the last ten days, Beltran has a wRC+ OF 97 and Jeter has a wRC+ of 96. Beltran has two homers, Jeter has one. Season wise, Beltran’s wRC+ is only five points higher.

Yes, Beltran is a better hitter, but not by a ton. Jeter will be in the line up every day regardless and I’d rather have an elite defender at SS.

            • TheRealGreg

They paid Beltran a ton of money. They won’t sit him

            • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Extremely SSS and Beltran is supposed to come out of this funk.

Bench Beltran is your solution to improve the offense?

              • Oy

                Since September 1st, 2013.

                Beltran 342 PA, .297 wOBA, 85 wrc+
                Jeter 328 PA .292 wOBA 80 wrC+

Half a season’s worth of PA is not a SSS. Beltran is an old, declining player with bum knees and now a bum throwing arm. At this point, his bat is better than Jeter’s, but not a by a great margin. With Beltran out of the line up and Jeter at DH, defense at SS improves significantly.

                • Need Pitching & Hitting

                  They desperately need more offense.
There’s basically 0 chance that is coming from Jeter or Ryan.
There’s still a chance it can come from Beltran. He posted a 132 wRC+ just last year.
There’s a chance he’s just cooked, or too injured to perform that way, but they need to find out, especially since he’s on a 3-year deal. They aren’t going to find out with him on the bench.
If they don’t find more offense (among many other concerns), it’s really not going to matter whether Jeter or Ryan play SS.

That said, I wouldn’t mind Beltran sitting on occasion against LHP.

                  • vicki

people need to go back and read this again.

  • nycsportzfan

Cool video with Katoh. Totally can see a Ichiro influence in his swing. I think he’ll get going again. He skipped SI all together which is a tough step for anyone really. Not all are gonna rake and play well right outta the gates at a higher level.

  • jakegibbsforever

Beltran has been battling injury…..his potential the rest of the year far exceeds the offensive output Jeter will offer as a DH. Enjoy Jeter, he will soon be gone, he’s not hitting that terribly…..DH Beltran and use Ryan as a defensive replacement late when its really needed.

    • Wolfgang’s Fault

That’s what they used to say about Jake Gibbs. Said it every year. I think it finally came true around the time he announced he was planning on retiring. Good thing they drafted, signed, & developed Thurman.

If Beltran’s elbow is hurt, all bets are off until it no longer is, or until he no longer is.

  • TheRealGreg

    A’s win in 12

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

1-0, and it’s an unearned run.

  • Wayne

Does David Palladino pitch tommorrow for staten island ?

  • Wayne

Anyway Rob Refsnyder gets moved back to right field? Can’t he play a decent right field ?

    • Wolfgang’s Fault

He played a very respectable LF in college. Might not have the arm for RF, but I’d wager he could hold his own if need be.

  • Yankeefan91

wow the A’s just got Samardzija and Hammel

  • vicki

yep, gave up russell. going for it.

chicago now has two top-10 shortstop prospects. gotta think one is going for pitching.
