Game 100: How About An Easy Win?

By
(Presswire)

(Presswire)

I could totally go for a blowout win tonight. Like nine or tens run in the first two or three innings, then go into cruise control and let the just called up Chris Leroux get one of those silly three-out saves. It’s been a long time since the Yankees had a laugher like that — they haven’t scored double-digit runs since scoring 14 at Fenway Park on April 24th, which was 77 games ago — and after these last two games, I think we could all use one. Just do me a solid. Blow this one open early and make the last few innings boring. Here is the Rangers lineup and here is the Yankees lineup:

  1. LF Brett Gardner
  2. SS Derek Jeter
  3. CF Jacoby Ellsbury
  4. DH Carlos Beltran
  5. 1B Brian McCann
  6. 3B Chase Headley
  7. RF Ichiro Suzuki
  8. C Frankie Cervelli
  9. 2B Brendan Ryan
    RHP David Phelps

It’s hot and humid as hell in New York, plus there is some rain in the forecast later tonight. Stuff that will probably affect the game somehow. We’ll just have to wait and see. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm ET and can be seen on YES.

  • Yankee$

I guess those silly 3 inning saves were less silly when the rule was established? Time to change that rule. Hey, let’s hope for a Quality Start !!

  • Cheddard Headley

Tonight is the night BGDP gives the performance of his life and cements his spot in the 2015 rotation. It doesn’t get any bigger than this, a matchup against Darvish with a postseason berth hanging in the balance. BGDP will match Darvish, I just don’t know if he’ll out duel him because it’ll probably be 0-0 through 8.

  • TheRealGreg

Not mentioned here is which pitcher they are opposing. And for good reason

  • W.B. Mason Williams

Have to wonder how much rope Phelps will get with A) Darvish on the bump and B) Leroux called up with pretty much the express purpose of being the emergency net and probably being sent down tomorrow.

But I’m all for Phelps making this all hypothetical and tossing a gem to give Yu the L.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

I would think Leroux is more of a “break glass in case of emergency” reliever and would have little effect on how much rope Phelps gets.

I’d imagine they’ll try to get as much as they possibly can out of Phelps.

      • Preston

But unless Phelps pitches seven and we have the lead Leroux is probably getting in the game. Which won’t be good.

  • hogsmog

Yes, please, a big fat blowout. Make it stupid, guys.

  • nycsportzfan

Love the lineup tonight. Hopefully Yu isn’t on his A game because he can shut down the best of lineups. On paper, it looks solid though.

    • hogsmog

Yeah seeing a lineup with Headley really rounds it out, at least on paper, at least in my mind.

  • nycsportzfan

Frankies coming up huge tonight. You heard it here first.

    • nycsportzfan

Frankie nails the would be base stealer! Big night coming for Cerv!

      • nycsportzfan

And theres the Double for Cervelli. Now lets see if he can add a Run to his double and his throw to nail would be basestealer.

        I freaking love Cervelli!

        • nycsportzfan

Make that 2doubles and a run scored as well as throwing out a base stealer. Dude just produces when given chances.

  • Bob Michaels

Derek Jeter tied the record GIDP for shortstops yesterday 283

    • vicki

what took him so long? he’s only played more games at short than everyone but vizquel.

      • Yankee$

What about all of those Mickey Mantle strikeouts ?!?!?

        • HansDavenport

Mantle walked more then he struck out and has been far surpassed by at least Reggie Jackson.

  • Daniel

A laugher against Yu Darvish? I’m seriously doubting this. But I’m hoping for a solid W none the less.

  • YankeeDJW

Andrus looks awful. I’ll take Jeter over him any day this season.

    • No 2013 again

His D alone makes him a better player than Jeter nowadays.

      • YankeeDJW

        Not according to WAR.

        • forensic

What WAR are you looking at?

fWAR has Andrus up 1 to .4 and bWAR has Andrus up .8 to .4.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

And by Baseball Prospectus’ version as well:
            Andrus: 1.2
            Jeter: -0.6

        • No 2013 again

I have no idea where you get your stats from, but both BRef and Fangraphs have Andrus ahead of Jeter in WAR.

          • YankeeDJW

Yes, barely ahead because he’s played more games. ESPN.com. 0.8 to 0.5. Andrus fielding WAR is also negative. -0.1 to Jeter’s -0.3.

They’re basically the same player. I like Jeter better, so I’d take him in a heartbeat over Andrus this year, especially after seeing how bad Andrus has looked this series.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

Watch both players and tell me you can honestly say Jeter’s defense is even remotely close to Andrus, much less better?

If anything, the gap in WAR is probably understated, because UZR seems to be overrating Jeter’s defense.

              • YankeeDJW

I never said it was better. They were almost identical players this season, and based on WAR and what I’ve seen this series, I would take Jeter over Andrus. Andrus looks like he forgot how to hold a bat.

                • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

My mistake, I misread your comment about fielding WAR.

I do think Jeter’s the better hitter, but I think Andrus makes op that smaller gap with the gap in defensive value.

    • nycsportzfan

I’ll take Jeets over prob 20 starting short stops in the Majors. People just don’t pay nearly enough attention to other teams. Same issues, and its whos vets will step up and whos gonna find the surprise players, and who will fill in for injured player..etc..etc Jeters having a better yr then a ton of SS’s in the league.

      • YankeeDJW

People act like Jeter is the bottom of the barrel this year and it’s not true. We’ve been spoiled by too many years of Jeter playing at his level.

        • nycsportzfan

Its depressing. We have been spoiled. But its not hard to look around the league and see its not as bad as you thought, ya know?

      • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

        20?

        Lol. Homer.

        • nycsportzfan

          Hechivarria
          Gregorious
          S.Drew
          A.Escobar(similar yr)
          Segura
          Y.Escobar
          E.Escobar(jesus escobars.lol)
          R.Tejada
          B.Miller
          Suarez/Romine(tigers)
          Andrus

          You get the point?

          • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

            No.
That’s not nearly 20, and a few on your list of not 20 have been significantly better than Jeter.

            • forensic

And a few of them aren’t really even the starters. They’re only playing in place of the injured starter.

              • nycsportzfan

Everyone player I listed has played more then enough to qualify. I woulden’t waste my time putting a backup with 10games played up there. I could probably find a few more.

                • forensic

That’s not true at all. Gregorius has played 29 games. Suarez has played 37. Drew has played 32. And so on and so far.

                  • forensic

                    *so forth…

                  • nycsportzfan

Did you not see Romine next to Suarez name? That means combined SS play for the tigers has been terrible. And if you want, you can look to Didi’s last yr and this yr combined if it makes you feel better about how terrible hes been? Either way, Jeters yr this season is better then Didis. The guy is terrible. Would you want him over Derek just for this yr? I sure woulden’t. S.Drew is the Sox SS who signed late and is off to his usual terrible start. The guys extremely overrated and i’d take B.Ryan with his salary over the guy.

          • nycsportzfan

If not. Amarista, and Lowrie are a couple more.

            • YankeeDJW

Didn’t mean to start a firefight with my offhand comment. Moving on…

          • The Ghost of Eric Duncan

Can’t say I’d take Jeter over segura unless you’re referring to solely this season. But overall I agree completely.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

    He’s out.

  • Slap-Ass

Good job wasting your challenge Washington.

  • No 2013 again

how can they miss such an easy call??

  • No 2013 again

If the ump is going to give that pitch way outside to Darvish it’s going to be impossible to hit him. Such a bs call

  • nycsportzfan

Longorias having a pretty brutal season ey?

    • Daniel

It’s ok, he signed like a 20 year deal so he’ll have time to work out some of his mechanics.

  • YankeeDJW

That one slipped passed the censors.

  • Slap-Ass

Yeah, there won’t be a blowout tonight. Maybe for the Rangers.

    • Daniel

Darvish has several times teased a possible no-hitter. This might be the time and the team to finally seal the deal on for his first no-no.

      • YankeeDJW

        Lovin’ the positive attitude here.

      • Scott

Not tonight chase Ruth Headley took care of that

  • YankeeDJW

No longer need to hold your breath on balls hit to 3B.

  • W.B. Mason Williams

    Love the Cervelli cannon.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

You know, if Chad Qualls were to be traded for Casey McGehee this year, it’d actually be a bigger deal.

  • Cheddard Headley

Paulie already told these guys to swing at that 1st pitch. He throws the same get me over 1st pitch FB as Tanaka does. Be aggressive.

  • No 2013 again

It’s really hard to believe Almonte can be worse than Ichiro… At worst he’ll be the same crap but way cheaper

  • Cheddard Headley

Keep trotting Ichiro out there every day. He looks like a major leaguer.

  • No 2013 again

What is that?? A good AB?? Nice!

  • nycsportzfan

Way to make Rios Chase, Headley. hehehe!

  • Dalek Jeter

I was watching the highlight reel Mike posted for Headley last night: His lefty and righty swings are remarkably different.

  • Cheddard Headley

I really like this Headley guy. He’s single handedly carrying this offense right now.

  • Scott

Apparently no one told Headley that Yankees don’t hit for extra bases

    • No More

Don’t worry. He will figure it out pretty soon.

  • No More

Pressure is off now. The Yanks will not be no-hit against Darvish. That in itself is a major accomplishment for this terrible offense.

  • No More

Another Ichiro failure, but yes, let’s continue to commit to him.

    • Slap-Ass

Seriously, Almonte can’t be any worse.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

He could be. He has been (granted SSS).

But they really need to try something else. Anything else. May as well give Almonte the first shot.

  • No More

It was such a lazy silly swing from Ichiro on the K. And LOL Steinbrenners for giving him a two year deal so he could chase 3,000 in pinstripes/marketing. #marketingfailure.

    • stuart a

3000.. he has zero chance of 3000 hits. the guy is worse then gene Michael at his worst…

can he get 1 homerun this season please..

      he should be waived tonight…………….

  • Andy

I feel like Ichiro takes a lot of strikes right down to middle for someone who never walks. Anyone agree or is it just me?

    • Slap-Ass

Other than decent defense, average baserunning and good bunting, he’s totally useless.

      • Dalek Jeter

He’s really not a good bunter. He’s got good speed, but off of the top of my head if I had to guess he’s probably like the 6th best bunter on this team alone.

        • Slap-Ass

Ok well disregard the bunting part.

        • Darren

huh? Jeter and Ellsbury are like the only good bunters.

          • Dalek Jeter

Gardner can get a bunt down, so can Roberts…I’m also assuming that Ryan can get a bunt down decently as he’s a back up and as a back up that’s something I expect out of him.

    • Daniel

Yeah, try watching game day and count how many times he takes 4 seam fb’s down the middle and then a swinging strike happens down at his shoes. He’s one of a kind.

  • Dalek Jeter

Michael Kay couldn’t be more wrong in this case, don’t get me wrong: Greene, Phelps, and McCarthy have been awesome so far, but these are guys who either have little to no track record or have a track record of being significantly worse than what they’ve been doing…you can’t just expect guys to exceed expectations.

  • Daniel

Everyone always brings up the idea that(almost always as part of an insult) Ichiro is only in the lineup or possibly even on the team for Japanese PR. I’m curious if anyone knows what the numbers are in Japan as far as viewership goes or even sales of any kind Yankees related. It’s gotta be impressive, having these three in particular all on the same team.

  • No 2013 again

terrible pitch.. why not throw the curve down? Hit and Run was on like 2 or 3 times

  • No More

Ball game. Rangers win. Go for series split tomorrow.

  • Cheddard Headley

If that run scores from 3rd that’s the ballgame. Rangers know how to hit and run, Giradi won’t even attempt it.

  • YankeeDJW

Nice DP. Limit the damage and one lucky swing ties it up again.

  • Cheddard Headley

You’ll normally take 2 outs but not in this case. One run is the ballgame.

  • stuart a

don’t worry ichiro is due for a 2 rbi game tonight. he wants to icrease his rbi’s by 20 %

could you imagine a team making the playoffs with a Rf with say 20 rbi’s with 500 AB’s…
ichiro good AB in the first he is so good we should sign him to an extension, he is young only 40. and he brings in marketing $$$$$$$$$

  • No More

Girardi should have played the infield in. That cost them the game.

  • Slap-Ass

    Gotsta love that 2 seamer.

  • No More

    That’s game.

  • The Guns of Navarone

Why are these guys standing at second base after their hit? Very peculiar…

  • Slap-Ass

I’m surprised the run wasn’t unearned somehow.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

    Thank Yu for that.

  • Cheddard Headley

Great job by Ryan. Two productive outs will score that run. Gardner should try to get a productive out here or the next best thing, a hit.

  • No More

LOL only way they can score off of Darvish is via a balk.

    • Old Man Time

      Oh, you’re bitching again. Huh.

  • forensic

    Yeah Gardy!

  • Yankee$

    Gritty shot.

  • YankeeDJW

How many of you said the game was over when the Ranger scored 1 run? ;)

  • Cheddard Headley

Frankie’s giving us energy. He’s been real good this season. Giving us some quality play.

    • nycsportzfan

Even when his numbers weren’t anything to write home about, he did come up with Timely hits often and make a bunch of hustle plays and energy plays. His offense has been pretty consistent the past few yrs, which when you add in his energy and speed for a catcher, makes him a pretty good player.

I’ve said many times, Cervelli would be starting on many other teams in the league.

  • Dalek Jeter

    http://riveraveblues.com/2014/.....nt-8814727

Over the sound of Gardner’s awesomeness.

  • No 2013 again

3 xbh against Darvish.. that’s amazing

  • forensic

    What a gift. Thanks Darvish!

    • nycsportzfan

Thank the Yank Stadium short porch as well.

      • nycsportzfan

Oh nevermind. Listening on Radio, and they now said that it wasen’t really a cheapie.

        • Dalek Jeter

No, it was sort of a cheapie, probably about 4 rows.

          • The Guns of Navarone

And it hung up in the air forever… wind totally took it. TEH JET STREEAM!

          • nycsportzfan

Just saw it on MLB.COM.. Def woulden’t of guessed off the bat it would go, thats for sure. Not a wall scraper but as you said, kinda cheapish, but counts the same.

      • forensic

That comment was about the balk, not the homerun.

        • nycsportzfan

I know it was. And right after that it looked like we could thank the short porch as well.

  • Scott

Can we stop with the ball games over? Have some faith.

  • nycsportzfan

    GARDY!!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

    Gardy!!!!

  • No 2013 again

    Gardy!!!!

  • The Guns of Navarone
    • nycsportzfan

Its flat out ridiculous. Sometimes I wonder if the Yanks are cursed. Has Yu Darvish missed anytime with injury? How about Kuroda or Ryu? But are stud jap gets seriously injured 12-15 starts into his ML career.

    • Slap-Ass

Just fucking do the TJ already.

      • The Guns of Navarone

I’m with you. I feel like they’re just delaying his timetable

    • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

Seems like it was to be expected. Doesn’t sound like anything has changed.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

To be expected. Exactly as the article says. Too early to tell.

Frankly, I’d say the pain decreasing is a sign of progress, just initially slower than hoped.

      Obviously, you amputate here.

  • Dalek Jeter
  • Slap-Ass

According YES, that’s his 1st HR of the year. LOL.

  • Dalek Jeter
  • Cheddard Headley

HR GARDY! BGDP IS OUTDUELING DARVISH

  • Scott

Reverse lock. They are going to get to darvish

    • nycsportzfan

      Headley effect

  • No More

Darvish is a prime-time pitcher. He will not get injured like Tanaka, who splittered his arm to death. Bad job Yankees scouting for not noticing the amount of splitters that Tanaka throws and threw in Japan and not have that factor into whether he would break down, which he did.

    • Dalek Jeter

So now that the game’s not “over” it’s time to bitch about something else entirely? Gotcha.

      • Terry

        Stop!

        It’s a trap!

    • Slap-Ass

      What about Kuroda?

    • stuart a

so he got hurt because he throws a lot of splitters. wow.

you a pitching coach? How about doctor?

      • Dalek Jeter

This is probably my favorite comment ever.

    • Old Man Time

I’m only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are going wrong
I only listen to the sad, sad songs
I’m only happy when it rains

I only smile in the dark
My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn’t accidentally tell you that
I’m only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down, pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down, pour your misery down on me

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

        I fucking love you, Shirley.

  • W.B. Mason Williams

I’d like everyone that commented “That’s the game” to humbly remember this thread for the future.

    • The Guns of Navarone

It’s just venting the frustration of how inept this team is at scoring runs, which is the reality. Let’s also not go the other way and get crazy because they put up two runs.

    • YankeeDJW

      Totally agree.

    • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Same bullshit happened Sunday when the Reds took a 1-0 lead.

  • The Guns of Navarone

Gardy showing the XBH power the last couple of seasons. ISO’s of .143 and .142 both higher than Ellsbury’s.

  • No More

Now I know why they were able to turn the DP, Ryan is in there instead of Roberts!!

  • nycsportzfan

If you fill a lineup with Gardners and Ellsburys, your gonna win alot of titles. Those guys have such great all around games.

    • TC

Wait, so your saying an entire lineup of good players would make a really good team? Is that you John Madden? Hope you didn’t hurt yourself with that brain crunching analysis.

      • nycsportzfan

Still no need to be a dick about it though.

      • nycsportzfan

Yeah, I guess your right.lol But you get the point.

        • TC

Haha, yeah I get it. Both very productive and likeable players.

  • Slap-Ass

This ump’s strike zone is all over the damn place.

  • nycsportzfan

Scranton up 8-0. They put up a 7 spot in the 3rd and are still batting. Zoilo has gone deep twice all ready. Refs is 1-2 wit a double so far.

    • YankeeDJW

Can’t wait until they bring Refs up to replace Roberts.

      • nycsportzfan

I can’t wait to have em up here. I actually think BROB is a important piece to this team. He runs the bases really well, is a switch hitter, a veteran pressence, and for some reasons, it feels alot of his hits have been when the lineup can’t do much at all, and its extremely needed. I would just put Wheeler back at Scranton and call up Refs and play him at 2nd and in the OF and maybe once and awhile at DH.

But yeah, I want him up as well.

    • nycsportzfan

Holy shit, the guy Scranton destroyed is our old friend Kanekoa Texeira..lol

He was part of the Nick Swisher deal with W.Sox.

    • nycsportzfan

Also Tyler Austin cracked another HR and has 4RBI(not sure if Grand slam? He has 2 hits), and Peter O’Brien is 3-3.. Looks like good old Peter O is starting to rake again. He figures out each level he advances to pretty quickly.

  • Dalek Jeter

    Wow, odd miscue by Beltre.

  • Scott

Wow I’m usually on the ichiro band wagon but man he sucks

    • whozat

That’s the thing…sure, not everyone needs to club homers, but if you’re such a light hitter that they can always play shallow they take away the singles you used to get AND prevent runners from taking more than one base even when the ball does drop in. You go from having an empty but good batting average to an empty and mediocre batting average, and there’s really nothing you can do to add more offensive value.

  • Cheddard Headley

Ichiro just hit it as far as he could, lazy fly to RF. Time to cut him.

  • The Guns of Navarone

Fuckin’ Ortiz… I’m fairly confident one day his production will fall off a cliff. But I thought it would happen three years ago.

    • YankeeDJW

      It can’t be natural.

      • Scott

It’s not everyone knows it. But because he plays for the darling Red Sox no one says anything

      • Daniel

For reasons unknown to us(possibly forever), Ortiz has been chosen to be excused from the tearing down exposure of PED violation. I don’t know why, it may be because of what he represents for one of baseballs most famous cities and their now 3 recent world championships. Maybe they think baseball can’t take it, that’s why they go so balls to the wall on placing so much blame on A-Rod.

  • Dalek Jeter

My dislike of Ichiro grows by the inning.

  • BKamm

Suzuki fly out to the short fielder. Someone say Zorro went deep twice tonight?

    • Old Man Time

Is Darvish pitching against Scranton too?

      • HansDavenport

Will Almonte always have to hit against Darvish?

        • Old Man Time

Let’s not pretend Almonte is more than he is.

          • HansDavenport

Okay. And you stop pretending you’re not a troll.

            • Old Man Time

Troll? Whatever. You have a lot of learning to do if you believe that.

  • forensic

lol, the radio booth is still talking about and acting like Soriano is an impact bat who will really help a team when he signs. Guess they didn’t watch anything this year.

    • Dalek Jeter

They probably still think Solarte is an all star.

      • forensic

Sterling was VERY excited when told that he tripled in his first AB in San Diego.

  • Slap-Ass

This Martin guy is a PIA.

  • Cheddard Headley

BGDP! BGDP! It’s an official game! Outdueling Darvish.

    FIST PUMP BATTERY

(dibs on the name for my shitty nickleback-esc modern rock band)

  • Slap-Ass

Phelps is doing a solid job of late.

  • Dalek Jeter

    Franky?!?!?!

  • forensic

Don’t know if they showed it on TV, but Suzyn said they’re putting the tarp on the mound in the bullpen. That can’t be a good sign.

  • Terry

Superb work by Phelps and Cervelli.

  • BrianMcCannon

When was the last time Ryan started at short? Might head to the game tomorrow but I feel as though a rest day for Jete is imminent.

    • TC

July 9, according to b-ref game logs.

      • BrianMcCannon

        Thanks.. its been a while.

    • forensic

Last started at SS on the 9th.

I agree a day off for Jeter would certainly be in the offing. Day game after a night game after a really long game last night. Then he plays in all 3 games against an AL East opponent.

      • BrianMcCannon

Oof, yea. Day game after night didn’t even occur to me. Although maybe since this game is probably now over Girardi would be more willing to play him?

  • HansDavenport

Day game. It’s a good bet Jeter will sit.

  • Dalek Jeter

Why are you bunting on 3-0?!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

Way to get the job done.

  • RetroRob

Very heavy rains in Westchester with major thunder. If it’s heading south, the game will be going on hold.

    • Dalek Jeter

I’d like to push one more run across first, just because.

      • RetroRob

I’ll inform the weather gods. I haven’t been on good terms with them in awhile, so not sure it will help.

    • Yankee$

      Prophetic.

      • RetroRob

It hit rapidly. Very little warning. The good news is ten minutes later it has stopped. Don’t know if anything else is in the area, though, that will cause them to hold off restarting. Also, that infield now…

  • Cheddard Headley

Frankie should be playing everyday. What a great hitter.

  • HansDavenport

Cervelli has 5 XBH. Suzuki 7 in 4 times the at bats.

  • stuart a

does cervelli have more XBH’s they the great ichiro yet?

    • forensic

Cervelli now has 6 XBH’s, all doubles. Ichiro has the same 6 doubles along with 1 triple.

  • Cheddard Headley

They owe us a short game since they called the one in Baltimore after 4 and a half. Call the game and we’ll be even.

  • forensic

If they call this one, it’s almost payback for the game against the O’s they lost, except that obviously this one isn’t in the division against a playoff contender.

  • TC

Lol, cant even get the tarp on the field. This ones over.

  • Slap-Ass

    Potty mouth!

  • Cheddard Headley

They can’t get that tarp on. Time to call the game. When they went to break they had it half on. Jesus Christ, pull it on!

  • forensic

Guess it’s really coming down. John and Suzyn joking that they pairing off animals and that you can barely see the grounds crew.

    • forensic

      *they’re…

  • Darl

take your time guys..lets call it a game :D

    • Terry

Meanwhile, I get to see Ian Kennedy sit down the Cubs.

Incredibly, the Padres have been scoring of late.

  • Masahiro Nakamura

Good news is Mike looks to be getting the easy win he wanted.

  • stuart a

ryan on a 2 and 0 count swung at a pitch in the lefties batters box.

he is a horrible hitter, on par with ichiro….

    • Terry

Ryan has never seen a 2-0 pitch tonight.

  • Slap-Ass

    Effin’ rain!

  • Dalek Jeter

    wow, just call it.

  • The Ghost of Eric Duncan

Wooo! Five inning win against Darvish on the horizon. A win is a win.

  • Slap-Ass

Wow. Horrible job by the grounds crew. They were slow as shit getting that tarp out initially.

    • Scott

They may have done it on purpose. 5 innings counts as a game, just see the yanks last game before the ASB in B-more.

    • Terry

That might actually contribute to the decision to call the game, which for the Yankees is not altogether a bad thing.

For myself, I’m interested in seeing Gardner play wet-water-slide again.

Anybody know where I can find a video or gif of that?

      • Preston

Maybe a little gamesmanship by the grounds crew?

        • Terry

          Nah,

They got the tarp on in time, as it turns out.

It just blew off and it was probably really embarrassing for the grounds crew to have to recover.

No gamesmanship/cheap stunts, just that they didn’t weigh down the tarp properly.

  • Joe C

    FYI the weather.

This is the same cold front that passed through Central and Norther New York Earlier this afternoon. It’s a cold front that’s going to go allow temperatures to be a lot nicer tomorrow.

the bad news I think the storm gained energy since it passed through Syracuse, Cortland and the Roscoe dinner.

    • Terry

Makes sense since this weather front was forecast to his a couple of hours later, but if the temperature and barometric gradients increased, then the storm would move faster and/or gain intensity.

      • Terry

        hit*

  • Preston

I’ll take the cheap win, hurry up and call it.

    • JustaJagielo

I wish there was a like button so I could like that post.

      +1

      • Terry

        Riveraveblues,

        Justajageilo has good ideas.

        I recommend this as well.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

Hopefully this game gets called now. Otherwise figure it’s going to be a long delay to get the field ready and the bullpen is going to need to finish the rest of the game.

    • The Ghost of Eric Duncan

Hopefully the state of the bullpen helps factor into the decision to call it as well.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

The umpires make that decision at this point. I doubt they care about the state of the Yankee bullpen.

        • RetroRob

What do you mean? The umpires aren’t on the side of the Yankees?

As I mentioned above, the rains hit fast and they’ve left fast. Unless there are other storms coming, I’d be surprised if this was called. The bigger issue might be getting the infield into shape.

        • HansDavenport

Very good point. Umps are like that.

      • Terry

        That would kinda be unethical.

So what are the options for the Yankees in the Bullpen if the game doesn’t get called?

I think Francis, Kelly to set-up, and Betancess to close.

  • HansDavenport

strange that the master of small ball would not have a terrible hitter like Ryan bunt Cervelli over to third with Garner on deck.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

He did try to bunt. He failed.

      • HansDavenport

Okay. Missed that. So Ryan is even more one dimensional than I had imagined.

      • Terry

In Ryan’s defense, he hit the ball pretty well, just at Beltre. Pretty common occurrence in this series, really.

  • Terry

    Tarp off.

    • Yankee$

      Hey! You Tarp off Mister!
      ;)

      • Terry

But I’m not as good at it as you are! :P

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

Almonte has two home runs in their suspended game tonight. Still wonder who gets called up.

    • TheRealGreg

Well now they need an infielder because of Johnson’s injury

      • Yankee$

It’s so tough to keep track. Which player injured their Johnson?

      • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

Roller is batting .273, Pirela is batting over .300 and was coincidentally not in the game tonight. Both can play 1B.

        • TheRealGreg

I would go with Pirela because he can play both positions. I also want to see a new face.

      • forensic

No they don’t. They already had an extra infielder since Wheeler is still there too. They need the outfielder more than an infielder.

        • TheRealGreg

Depends if Tex goes on the DL too.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

Right now they need an OF.
If Tex goes on the DL, they need both.

      • Terry

        They actually need an outfielder.

The Yankees have two back-up infielders in Brendan Ryan and Zelous Wheeler.

Johnson looked like he was going to be used as an RF, but now he’ll be gone for a couple of weeks.

So it’s entirely possible that Wheeler is brought up for the time being or until Cashman makes a trade.

        • Terry

So it’s entirely possible that Almonte* is brought up for the time being or until Cashman makes a trade.

          • TheRealGreg

But again, if Tex goes on the DL, they’ll need both. And Pirela can fill both roles.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

But he can’t fill 2 roster spots.

            • Terry

Oh, you were talking about Texeira going to the DL?

It’s possible they bring up Pirela, ALmonte, and/or Murphy if that happens.

              So who knows.

              • TheRealGreg

it wouldn’t be the most shocking development

  • TheRealGreg

Phelps is probably done as well as Darvish. That’s a win for us.

    • forensic

Phelps was holding them down and had a better pitch count than Darvish. It’s not good if he’s out and they have to find four innings from their not so reliable bullpen members, since some of the reliable ones may not be available.

      • TheRealGreg

It’s a win for us because Darvish has the potential to shut us down altogether. He could put 2 or 3 innings quickly to get to 7 or 8 innings. I don’t believe Phelps has that potential

        • TheRealGreg

Plus of course, Texas has nobody fresh for their bullpen

          • Terry

The Rangers still have their long man, Scott Baker, as well as Feierabend and possibly Feliz. Of course, given Texas’ pitching philosophy, they could always overuse their pitchers so who knows.

On another note, Darvish is very hittable.

His fastball is, like most Japanese pitchers, straight as an arrow. It’s the main reason why he gives up so many home runs. He compensates for it with nasty secondary pitches, but if he’s as wild and the Yankees can take those secondaries out of the equation, he can be taken deep.

Again, he gets burned on his fastball most of the time because it’s really not that intimidating, so the Yankees either have to jump on it early or avoid 2 strikes.

            • TheRealGreg

I would say Baker is the likely candidate. Threw only 8 pitches yesterday.

Feliz threw 25 in 1.2 innings and Feierabend threw 20 in 0.2 innings.

              • Terry

Yah, but this is Ron Wasington, not Joe Girardi, a team led by their President, Nolan Ryan.

Pitch counts don’t mean anything to this organization, so if a pitcher feels good, they’re liable to let him pitch –

                – heck after a long rain delay, Darvish might still pitch.

  • Christ is King

    And in other news….

Solarte is 2 for 2 with an RBI triple and run scored.

    • TheRealGreg

Good for him and the Padres. They need offense just as much as we do.

      • Terry

Solarte also got a walk, which is a real asset of his since he’s hit the majors.

He’s got a real shot to turn some eyeballs in SD.

        • Christ is King

I really hope he does well… Seemed like a real nice guy who just hit a rough patch… Granted, a career minor leaguer, even Big Papi at one point was considered as not much until he changed scenery… Really hope Solarte does great.

          • Preston

David Ortiz was in the big leagues at 22. He hit .266/.348/.461 with the Twins, his main problem in Minnesota was injuries. He was Solarte’s age when he signed with the Red Sox. There are zero analogies to be made between the two.

        • HansDavenport

He did have a decent amount of walks. Surprised me.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

Why on earth would Texas leave Darvish in?

    • Old Man Time

I could possibly see it if TX was in the middle of fight for their division, but no way I would run my ace back out there when I’m sitting dead last.

      • TheRealGreg

He must not want to go to his bullpen, despite the fact that his longman, Scott Baker, only threw 8 pitches yesterday.

        Very weird.

        • HansDavenport

An excellent description of Ron Washington.

        • Terry

A lot of people don’t know, but there’s a surprising amount of rah-rah machismo in the Japanese sporting culture. In many cases, moreso than your typical American MLB teams (the Dodgers melodrama is an exception as usual).

Add the fact that it’s Nolan Ryan’s team, and that Darvish has been making some undiplomatic comments about baseball culture and Japanese Yamato Damshaii, and it’s not surprising that he wants to show he can come back out.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

Nolan Ryan works for the Astros now, fwiw.

I’m not surprised Darvish wants to pitch. I’m surprised Washington would let him pitch.

            • Jorge Steinbrenner

I’m flabbergasted, to be honest. I wouldn’t risk it.

I wonder if they really get this game in, though.

            • Terry

              Yes.

But it’s still his team’s philosophy and you don’t uproot years of clubhouse and organizational culture just because the CEO leaves.

And Ryan personally recruited Darvish. Darvish knows what plays well to Texas by knowing what the Strikeout King expected of him.

Ryan is a legend in the Rangers clubhouse, whether or not he went out on Darvish’s good side.

            • Terry

And thanks for the note, for some reason, I hadn’t heard that Nolan moved on from the Rangers.

  • TheRealGreg

Looks like Ron Washington’s going to roll the dice.

Darvish is running sprints in the outfield

    • HansDavenport

That’s the cocaine influencing his decision.

      • Terry

Well, with the border the way it is, the price of cocaine on the street has dropped dramatically (No, I have LE experience, I’m not a user or dealer).

        • HansDavenport

The thought never entered my mind.

  • HansDavenport

Cashman is a genuis. He anticipated this delay and brought up Leroux instead of a position player. He does it again!

  • Winter

      10:05

  • TheRealGreg

Shawn Kelley is up for the Yankees.

  • TheRealGreg

Might have found a reason why Ron Washington doesn’t want Scott Baker in this game.

The Rangers apparently are 0-16 in games that Scott Baker has pitched in.

    • Terry

He comes from the Twins school of pitching, which doesn’t work as well in Texas as it does in Target Field.

  • TheRealGreg

    This game could be called.

  • RetroRob

Clearly the field is unplayable. Call it!

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

I actually agree for non-homer reasons. Just call this shit already and have the field ready for the day game tomorrow.

Also, an all-time awesome level of stalling by the TV booth tonight. Lorenz asking Kenny if he worked out today was priceless.

  • Yankee$

So, anyone else remember when they used to drive relievers from the bullpen to the mound?

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Of course. It wasn’t THAT long ago, youngling. ;)

      • HansDavenport

But I cannot recall how long that lasted.

        • Yankee$

The motivation must have been money. I think the Golf Carts were branded, no? The Rheingold bullpen golf cart…

    • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense
      • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

In 1972, the Yankees used the bullpen car as a promotional vehicle, a pinstriped Datsun, but it was eventually taken out of service when rats chewed through the engine cables.

    Yes, rain, more rain!

BTW I posted this note three minutes after the one below. I wonder what causes that. We need a Q&A with Jay Gordon.

They said Shawn Kelley was up in the bullpen

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

The bright spot is that a nice fucking breeze just hit CT as the storms pass through. Made up for the 90 damn degrees we had all day.

  • https://twitter.com/KramerIndustry Dr. Martin van Nostrand

I would gladly have this game restart and backfire on the Yankees if it means that the nightmares of the 2006 and 2011 playoff rainouts are reversed.

    • Darren

I would like to take this opportunity to say fuck you to Mike Mussina and his fucking laptop.

  • Derek Jeter

Darvish mocking Gardner during rain delay?

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Soria traded to the Tigers during the rain delay.

    QUICK! DARVISH FOR LEROUX!

  • RetroRob

Meredith, go into that umpire’s room and convince those men to call the game. Use whatever you need to make it happen.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

      Julia Morales would do that.

      • RetroRob

Clearly we’re on the same wave length on this one.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

LET MEREDITH IN THE ROOM, UMPS.

  • Get Phelps Up

And Joe Nathan loses his chance to blow some big games in the postseason.

  • TheRealGreg

The rain delay went on so long that the Rangers decided to trade their closer during the rain delay

  • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

So Texas will be without their closer if the game resumes.

  • Old Man Time

So what’s going on? MLB network keeps talking about Girardi’s “antics” to delay the game, but never give details.

  • TheRealGreg

And now the tarp is going on again.

    This is ridiculous

  • YankeeDJW

Just call it already. Two late nights is more than enough.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Some major thunder over here. Just call this shit already.

  • RetroRob

I believe they’ve already called the game. It’s not uncommon to let the teams know so they can get back off the field and into the club house before it’s announced to the masses.

  • RetroRob

I remember from when I was a kid the Yankees were playing in Baltimore. The rains started and came down heavy. When the rain stopped, Weaver (or so the story goes) instructed the grounds crew to dump all the water on the tarp into LF, making the field unplayable. The Yankees had taken the lead in the top of the inning, so the game reverted back to the last completed inning, and the Yankees lost. Brilliant move by Weaver, but I’m still pissed off nearly 40 years later.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

And David Phelps outduels Yu Darvish in a bullpen-sparing, complete game effort.

    Well done, Mr. Phelps.

  • TheRealGreg

Looks like Dale Scott just called it.

  • TheRealGreg

    Yankees win 2-1

  • Darl

    Easy win!

  • Terry

    And that’s the game.

Where are all the experts on this website who ridiculed the idea of resigning joba for little money.last winter I wanted yank s resign him for 2 years for a modest deal.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Where are all of the experts on this website who thought giving Josh Hamilton $40M for 2013 was a good idea?
Or who thought signing Travis Hafner was a great idea?

Joba doing well elsewhere doesn’t mean he would’ve done well with the Yankees.

      • Old Man Time

Where are all the experts on this website who thought Kendrys Morales would hit 30 HRs?

    • JRod

I always liked Joba, but let’s face it, he absolutely sucked last year. The fact that he’s now a successful beard farmer (that shit is Taliban x Brooklyn hookah shop owner) and set-up man in Detroit doesn’t faze me. The Yanks certainly don’t need him & everyone is better off.

  • D23

Thanks goodness! Great job by Phelphs, Cervelli and Brett who now ties the team lead with 10Hrs? Oh God…Anyway only 1/2 game behind the Mariners for the WC and stay within the Orioles.

    • Old Man Time

      Tex leads with 17 HRs.

  • Chip Rodriguez

Phelps outduels Darvish. Reverse lock indeed. R-Til called it.

Nice to see the bullpen get the night off too.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Not difficult to call stuff like this, yet people insist on forfeiting the moment the series preview goes up.

      • Chip Rodriguez

it’s nice to think that this team is now 5-1 after the ASB. Good way to start the homestand. Now if only the O’s would lose. At least they have to deal with Iwakuma and Felix the next couple of nights.

  • Mick taylor

Actually hafner cost the team very little a 1 year deal and he was their best hitter until he got hurt. I also wanted to trade cc last year for Hamilton I wanted to sign Jose abreu , chapman and cespedes. I would also trade for morneau. Most of joba’s problems were cming back from injuries. He pitched in playoffs and the world series he could have pitched for yanks this year. I think he was disliked by girardi
