Game 99: Forget About Last Night

By

The Yankees threw the ball all over the field and looked generally helpless at the plate last night, so they responded today by swinging a trade for third baseman Chase Headley. He might not hit, there’s a chance he just stinks now, but at the very least he will be a huge upgrade at the hot corner defensively. I’m sure the pitching staff will appreciate that part of his game, if nothing else.

Headley is listed on the lineup card and is on the active roster for tonight’s game, but he is not in the starting lineup. The trade went down in the early afternoon and even though the Padres are in Chicago and not San Diego, getting to the Bronx in time for the game just didn’t happen. Joe Girardi told reporters Headley is expected to arrive at Yankee Stadium around 7:30pm ET and be available off the bench in the late innings. He also said he’ll be the team’s everyday third baseman going forward, because duh. Here’s the Rangers lineup and here’s the Yankees lineup:

  1. LF Brett Gardner
  2. SS Derek Jeter
  3. CF Jacoby Ellsbury
  4. DH Carlos Beltran
  5. 1B Brian McCann
  6. RF Kelly Johnsonlots of experience in left but this is his first career game in right
  7. 2B Brian Roberts
  8. C Frankie Cervelli
  9. 3B Zelous Wheeler
    RHP Chase Whitley

It’s a lovely day in New York. No clouds, warm but not hot, breezy but not windy. No rain in the forecast either. Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on My9. Enjoy.

    Yankees need more than Headley

    • nycsportzfan

Just got home. Just found out about the trade. Alot of people always think its gonna take a ton to get guys but we’ve now got 2players of worth(Headley and McCarthy), for 2 undrafted free agents and DePaula(only player of real worth).

Good move. Even if Headley dosen’t work out, its not a big deal, unless DePaula kills it which is always a long shot with young prospects..

  • Get Phelps Up

Any word as to what number Chase will wear?

      Cool, thanks guys.

No problem, now if WordPress would fix its internal clock, cause I posted before Mike did. :P

  • Cheddard Headley

We’re in a lot of trouble if we lose tonight. Darvish looms tomorrow. Tonight is a must win and should be obtainable against the hapless Rangers.

    • vicki

come on. why not chase headdard?

      obstinacy.

      • Daniel

He has to do things the hard way. I don’t know if that’s a sign of strong character or poor character. It may sound weird, but when I heard about this trade going down earlier I actually thought about Eddard and what his new name was going to be. I landed on the same one you did apparently.

        • vicki

          • Daniel

I didn’t even know who either of those people were before just now. But once again, I learn something from you that is totally unrelated to baseball.

I was just going to call him Woody from Toy Story.

          • trr

            He’s not even Tom Berenger.

        • Deep Thoughts

I was hoping Eddard was a throw-in on the deal. Someday we’ll find someone to take on that contract.

  • trr

    Welcome Chase.
And with Johnson in RF and McCann at 1B, what could possibly go wrong?

    • nycsportzfan

Yup. Welcome. Even though I didn’t really care if we got him much, its still a new toy with a fresh start who has done it in the past, and now has a much more hitter friendly stadium to play in. So hard to not get alittle excited.lol Either way, again, welcome Chase.

  • vicki

    whitest 25-man roster in baseball?

I was thinking Angels, but can see it.

    • forensic

As Mike said last year, it’s the New York Generic White Guys.

  • JGYank

Nice trade getting Headley. Didn’t give up much either. Pretty good defensively, switch hitter, has picked it up recently, and could get a boost from our park and from being healthy. He is a solid 3B that has had several good years in the past and one great one and should add a win or two.

Could the Solarte signing have worked out any better? Great two months carrying the team and along with a decent prospect nets us Headley. Not bad for a minor league deal.

Still need a backup at 1st, a SP (not including Pineda), a RF, and maybe a RP for pen depth but that’s a much smaller priority. Could even upgrade at 2B I suppose. Don’t need all of those things just a couple. Still have the pieces to make a move thanks to the buy low type of trades we have already made. If Pineda/Tanaka or both come back strong, and we address another hole (say RF), this could actually turn into a good team but we shouldn’t be relying on either pitcher to come back. But these small should keep adding up.

    Well done, FO.

    • Deep Thoughts

Hopefully it also keeps Brett Lawrie in Toronto’s lineup and infield.

  • Darren

If Chase Headley really wanted to be a True Yankee, he would have been here in time for the game. Laid back California dudes, goddamn.

  • Daniel

What about swapping out Roberts for Barney? Is it possible? The trade in defense would make up for the offense right? It’s not like Roberts is mashing anyway.

    • No 2013 again

FWIW they have the same fWAR..

Actually looking at fan graph’s leader board for 2B, it’s amazing how crappy Roberts has been. He’s 18th out 20 qualified 2B (Hill and Beckham are the 2 below him)

      • forensic

Hill and Beckham are the 2 below him

And ironically enough those seem to be the two most common names people like to mention here to replace Roberts and improve the production.

        • No 2013 again

          That would not be good.

    • Old Man Time

Another automatic out? Why not just play Ryan at 2nd?

  • The Other Matt

Chase, my favorite Whitley. Whitley, my favorite Chase …. until 7:30 when Headley arrives.

    • Deep Thoughts

      You got that Wright.

  • The Other Matt

That should help boost Ellsbury UZR. LOL. Johnson wanted no parts of catching that ball.

  • vicki

    good-looking stuff, whittles.

  • No 2013 again

Whitley’s location looks better today.. We can hope, right?

  • The Other Matt

    Brett, my favorite Gardner!

  • No 2013 again

    So predictable..

  • Bats

    AXISA,…

This is why you don’t get rid of Brian Cashman. Cashman knows how to swing these type of deals, where we give up practically no one.

If the Yankees can get Owings (not Didi), then the Yankees are setup for next year and beyond…assuming they will re-sign Headley.

The icing on the cake would be to acquire that super slugger who plays for Miami. IMO…. since the rotation is set with Tanaka, Pineda, and (Nova); the bullpen is set with Betances and Robertson in the late innings; and a potentially decent lineup…..the Yankees should offer all their minor prospects for Giancarlo Stanton.

    • swizmo

Giancarlo Stanton for the Thunder and Riverdogs. Make it happen, Cash!

    • No 2013 again

      Lots of assumptions there buddy…

    • Tar

They haven’t had a real 3rd baseman all year but we should be grateful he finally swings a deal at the half way mark?

The fact that we haven’t had a 3rd baseman, and what a really crappy job at roster construction he has done, is exactly why Cashman should go.

Like Torre before him…. he has gone past his expiration date. Move him up the ladder if everybody like him so much. But it’s past time for some new blood.

      • Old Man Time

And you still haven’t said who this mystery 3rd baseman was that Cash was supposed to obtain earlier.

        • Tar

The only mystery is why Cash thought it would be ok to start this year without a 3rd baseman.

As for who I could show you 28 third baseman who did better than what Cashman threw out this year. Would you like to see the list?

    • trr

      He’d just blow a hammy….

    • Daniel

Most people are not going to agree with you that acquiring a 5th starter and 2 months of an injured 3rd basemen who hasn’t hit in two years is reason to champion a GM by any stretch. No matter how cheaply they came.

  • Cheddard Headley

Can Jeter just be moved down already. He cost us last night’s ballgame and now tonight another DP.

  • W.B. Mason Williams

    Oh Derek…

  • nycsportzfan

Were gonna crack this guy. I just got that feeling. They are right on em, just that DP got em. Even that Belty ground out was hit hard and almost got through. Got a good feeling about this one.

  • nycsportzfan

Would rather be talking to the Rocks about De La Rosa then W.Sox about Danks, but the way its going, it’ll prob only cost Jaron Long and A.Romine to get em, so whatever.lol

    • The Other Matt

I wouldn’t want to touch Danks at all, for his contract alone.

      • nycsportzfan

Its not our money. There is no cap in baseball, so not that big a deal. As long as it costs around what I mentioned, its worth the gamble.

I’d just rather go after DeLaRosa, because I trust him more. Even if he hasen’t been great his entire career, hes been alot more consistent then Danks over the past few yrs.

  • No 2013 again

Hit, DP, Hit and nobody is surprised.. Freaking bat him in the leadoff spot for god’s sake. If you’re scared of Jeter’s reputation, just bat him first and avoid those ugly DPs.

    • trr

There can be a case made for batting him first

      • No 2013 again

There is, but only because Girardi and the team are more concerned about Jeter’s farewell tour.

  • W.B. Mason Williams

    Zelous…don’t be a hero.

  • No 2013 again

Headley should be there by now.. put him in. This is pathetic

  • forensic

    Don’t throw the ball!!!

  • trr

And the first error of the night goes to….

  • Cheddard Headley

There he is in the dugout. Put him at 3rd right now.

  • Pinedamaybegreata(formerlyMonterowasdinero)

Jeter should bat 3rd behind Ellsbury who steals bases and Gardner who takes pitches and is very hard to double. Think outside the box Joe. Ellsbury is no # 3 hitter anyway.

  • Cheddard Headley

Why the hell isn’t Headley at 3rd. He wouldn’t have thrown that away.

  • nycsportzfan

Sick change to go 1-2 here. Need this out

    • nycsportzfan

      HELL YEAH!

  • forensic

He keeps feeling his face wondering where the beard went.

  • nycsportzfan

Throw em the fastball down and away 0-2 here. He’ll chase.

    • nycsportzfan

Thats what he did. Wheeler makes the play. Whitley is damn fun to watch when he does good.

  • trr

    There’s Mr Headley

  • teddy

    pull wheeler, put chase in

  • Leg-End

    Nice escape.

  • trr

Pretty good job by Whit there

  • The Other Matt

Zelous Wheeler is surprisingly nimble and quick on his feet for a guy that resembles a person who doesn’t look very nimble and quick on their feet.

  • vicki

that was pretty valiant of whitley.

  • trr

    Oh!

  • Cheddard Headley

Good thing Chase got out of that because if that run had scored that might have been the ballgame. If these guys couldn’t hit a 10 ERA pitcher they won’t hit a 5, and even if they do Derek Jeter will wipe it away with a DP.

  • No 2013 again

bad team with no luck.. worst combination

    • vicki

      charming as ever.

  • The Other Matt

    Wow.

  • forensic

Wow, KJ had no idea what to do on that fly ball. This will certainly be an adventure out there tonight.

    • The Other Matt

I was trying to figure out if he looks more uncomfortable in right than Lyle Overbay did last year.

    • trr

Hope for an early led, and in goes Ichiro

    • nycsportzfan

I saw that. Hopefully not to many weird bloopy hits toward the foul line tonight.

    That’s a catch, damn

  • nycsportzfan

Come on Whitley! You got such solid stuff, just make sure you can at least locate your fastball for petes sake.

    Hahha, nice throw Cervelli.lol

  • vicki

rangers looking web gems-y in the field tonight.

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Is that the correct adjective? I like it. Mighta tried gemmish. But you can never underestimate the use of the -sy suffix

      • vicki

agreed on both points. gemly is nice too. and as forensic will confirm, my most favored of the adjective suffixes would be the -some.

        • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

          Ooh. Yes I like -some.

It makes me think of Jessie Chastain in Zero Dark 30: “You’re not being fullsome in your responses!”

          • vicki

i’ve enjoyed our little linguistics salon.

            now let’s assrape the rangers.

  • nycsportzfan

Cervelli makes up for the bad throw! All right!!

  • No 2013 again

another leadoff hitter aboard.. wheels will come off soon

    • nycsportzfan

Could be, but lets hope not. Whitley can look like G.Maddux at times and then he can’t throw a simple strike at times.

      • nycsportzfan

And then he gets Choo looking.. This guy is something.

  • nycsportzfan

Looks like another scary inning here in the top 3rd. Leadoff single and Choo up.

  • fred robbins

I was just wondering as a west coast guy, did the New York Press and Media all together and even MLB or ESPN get told by the Yankee Brass to lay off Jeter this season? Other than on the boards here, I have not heard Girardi get one question as to any possible late game pinch hitting- or what happened to late game defensive moves or even why he is playing as many games as he has.

Unless Seattle goes into a nose dive, it looks like Cano will have the opportunity to show the world he can actually hit in the post season while they Yankees are watching Jay Z sing the national anthem.

It will be nice to have a 3r baseman and maybe the short porch will awaken his bat, but was 3rd base really the problem on the defensive side? It seems like most of the mental and physical errors have come from 1st 2nd and short… is that right?

    • forensic

Even if they were to ask those questions, they know what the answer would be, so why bother?

      • forensic

The only time it was even close to being an issue was when Jeter was taken out in a double switch early in the season. But Girardi shot any talk of it being a consistent thing down and obviously there’s been no sign of it happening since.

    • trr

Fred, I think it’s just accepted as a fact of life that Jeter will be treated with kid gloves all year. It’s been the main focus of the team’s marketing campaign since Day 1 this year, so there’s no media conspiracy.

And yes SS/2B defense has been the team’s downfall, not just the errors, but the lack of range.

  • nycsportzfan

Unreal! Whitley comes back in brilliant style!

  • forensic

    Quite a throw there, Cervelli.

    • nycsportzfan

      lol

  • nycsportzfan

    Got em, hell yeah!!!!

    • forensic

You really need to come out of your shell a little bit. Try to show some enthusiasm sometimes, ok?

      • nycsportzfan

        I love it!

      • vicki

an evil wizard put a spell on him, and if he fails to type every thought that pops into his little brain he will perish. PERISH, I TELL YOU.

  • Cheddard Headley

Frankie finally gets his man. Kid brings a lot of energy and knowing him he’ll get our offense jump started in the bottom half.

  • Wayne

He could be Doug Fister type pitcher eventually!

  • Wayne

Chase whitley is getting traded or he is going to the bullpen .
He has a chance to be a decent starter its just that he reached his innings limit .

  • Slap-Ass

I see the offense is continuing its mediocrity from last night.

  • nycsportzfan

Come on Offense!!!! Headleys all ready with the team I noticed?(I got in late). Any reason hes not starting? You only got him so many games as is. Wheeler has done well, but thats a lefty bat with pop right there.

    • forensic

He didn’t get there until 7:30 (eastern) so the game was already started.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Frickin Joe Orsulak wanna-be

  • Cheddard Headley

Maddux shut them down last night and Pedro Martinez is doing the same tonight. They’ll be lucky to score 1 tonight.

    • Daniel

Maybe true. But you say that every game if they don’t score by about the 3rd inning or so.

    • terr

Solarte gets the break his career deserves by getting chances to start for the Padres. Good for him.

Welcome to the Yankees Cheddar Headley.

Good glove with superb range, class player, spray hitter against LHP and a pull-hitter with power against RHP. A good fit and the reason why the Yankees were after him especially last year with the Arod PR problems.

      • vicki

        intentional faint praise for solarte?

        • Terry

Solarte would have been competing with Johnson, Roberts and Wheeler here in New York and would have been at risk of being sent down again.

In San Diego, multiple infielders, including all the second basemen, are hitting below the Mendoza line. They are all unestablished players.

The best situation for a player like Solarte is to build his resume in a rebuilding ballclub. The worst place is a club like the Yankees who almost never rebuild and always insist on contention. That’s why it’s so hard to break into the Yankees as a developmental player, and why the Yankees have had a dearth of position players and starting pitching come from their farm system.

The last time the Yankees fielded a good haul from their farm system, it was in the mid 90s, the last time they truly had a rebuilding phase.

It’s obvious that Solarte will get a much better chance to win the starting position and establish a career in San Diego, and eventually turn it into a contract with another club.

That’s what a small market team like the Padres specialize in; player development.

Chase Headley himself is an example of this dynamic.

          • vicki

i meant telling a guy “hey, your performance to date merits your starting for san diego” might not be all that flattering. little joke at the padres’ expense, see?

            • Terry

I happen to be a Padres fan, having lived in San Diego, so that’s kind of insulting to me, Vicki.

              Apologize!

      • nycsportzfan

Yeah well, rangers fans aren’t in a pennant race right now.

They’ve had the leadoff man on base every inning. Not sure Whitley has been mowing them down.

      • Farewell Mo

4.1, 4 hits, no walks and 5 Ks is about as close as it gets for Whitley and “mowing them down”

    • Slap-Ass

  • Cheddard Headley

I think the surprise might be that Andy is returning to bolster the staff.

I can’t believe they just gave Headley number 12. I thought they’d wait a few years in honor of Vern.

    • MB923

      HAHA.

      literally out loud.

    • forensic

Soriano’s already had it since the Wells era (error?).

      • ropeadope

        Uh-oh. The curse of 12.

        • forensic

You almost have to go back to Wade Boggs to find someone with a somewhat length stretch of playing well in that number.

  • Nathan

Didn’t know El Duque is working with the Yankees.

One of the guys I enjoyed watching.

  • No More

I feel bad for the Rangers. They are going to come out of this series with a sweep feeling they are not that bad, and then when they play a good team and get beat again, they are going to be mad for the false hope the Yankees gave them.

Cerveilli with another strikeout – just a poor hitter.

  • nycsportzfan

    2 inept offenses.
Cervelli looked like a chump on that last swing, that pitch was a foot outside.

  • forensic

Where’s choice E, all of the above?

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

or F. None of the Above?

  • Slap-Ass

I feel like Whitley turns into a pumpkin this inning.

    • Slap-Ass

I also have a feeling there won’t be half price Papa John’s for at least another month.

      • trr

It should be 6 runs a week, not 6 runs a game

        • Slap-Ass

          haha

        • No More

Even that is asking too much.

  • Yankeefan91

anyone saw the video of Cliff Lee Last night Farting while been interviewed ?

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

      No, nor should anyone care.

    • Slap-Ass

      link?

    • trr

I hope they weren’t asking him about the Yankees when it happened….

  • Tom

    Alright. New goal this inning:

Get runner to 2nd base this inning (preferably without having to bunt)

    • forensic

Maybe try having everybody bunt next inning.

    • vicki

      dreamer.

  • No More

Such a terrible offense. Nick Martinez is not a good pitcher yet.

  • MB923

Bottom of the 6th inning and it’s only 8:38 PM.

  • MB923

    Please end Gardner and early.

    • MB923

      Send

  • Cheddard Headley

Gardy walks, here comes the DP.

  • The Other Matt

Don’t even wait for a pitch to be thrown. Run as soon as Martinez comes set.

  • MB923

    LOL, thanks Ron!!!

  • forensic

A Yankee actually got on base. Washington must know that means Martinez has really lost his stuff.

  • Tom

Please do something here Girardi (hit and run or GIVE Gardner the steal sign and take it out of his hands)

  • Slap-Ass

I’m too lazy to look, someone find out how may GIDPs Jeter has.

    • forensic

11 or 283, depending on which time frame you wanted.

      • Slap-Ass

        thnx

  • forensic

    Holy slowness, Wheeler.

  • Cheddard Headley

Pedro has been pulled from the game, maybe they can do something against the pen after Jeter hits into the DP.

  • MB923

Rangers getting all the breaks this series in the infield

  • trr

    So that’s what a SS looks like…

  • fred robbins

whoops… sorry about that– that did not really fit this game thread. .delete please

    • No More

As long as it is about this terrible offense than it will fit this game thread.

  • No More

Odds that Darvish no hits them tomorrow???

    • Terry

      1/1000

    • Slap-Ass

Reverse lock. We will win tomorrow guaranteed.

  • trr

    Gotta send him. Seriously.

  • No More

LOL wow Washington with a big *&^% you to Girardi, taking out his young starter before anything further could happen and when showing signs of being tired. Major &^%$ you to Girardi, MAJOR!!!!

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

67 pitches….awfully low limit, even for someone coming off injury.

      • MB923

I don’t understand the move. I tuned in late to the game, is this the guy’s first career start or first start in awhile or something? (didn’t see the series preview thread either).

        • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

First start since July 1 due to injury.

        • forensic

He’s been on the DL. It’s his first start since July 1st (no rehab starts either).

  • Rolling Doughnut

Run, run, before it’s too late!

    • No More

It is already happened. Jeter has grounded into a DP. Predestination.

  • Wolfgang’s Fault

Wheeler’s ground ball reminiscent of 2nd inning play during Don Larsen’s perfect game where Jackie Robinson’s liner off Yankee 3B Andy Carey caromed to SS Gil McDougald, & McDougald grabbing it on one hop & firing to 1B Joe Collins to barely nab Robinson at 1st.

    • ropeadope

      Were you at that game?

      • Wolfgang’s Fault

Nope, in Stuyvesent town listening to the game on the radio and learning how to walk.

        • ropeadope

I was two years old at the time (B’klyn). Can’t recall if I was already walking.

          • Wolfgang’s Fault

On that day, the Dodgers weren’t hitting or walking.

            • ropeadope

True, but they had one more year left in Brooklyn. We lived within walking distance of Ebbets Field, and my Dad took me to some games. Unfortunately, I don’t remember anything about them.

              • Wolfgang’s Fault

Hey, your dad was a good & wise man! Walter O’Malley, Horace Stoneman, Robert Moses, Mayor Wagner? Not so much.

Oh, & you may not think you remember those games you attended, but they’re a part of your D/N/A nonetheless. You, sir, are a mighty fortunate fellow!

                • ropeadope

Wolf, I’m seeing this comment for the first time well after it was posted. I very much appreciate your kind words, and I believe you’re correct regarding the DNA. I never thought of it in that light, but it makes perfect sense. Thank you for pointing it out to me.

  • Mike HC

MLB should really think about loosening up some of this PED policing.

    • No More

George Will would never allow it. His memories with his Daddy are too valuable.

  • No More

LOL Gardner not running at all just stationary at 1b.

  • No More

Girardi is probably stupid enough to think Whitley has turned a corner and made an adjustment and will fail to realize this is against the Rangers.

  • No More

Terrible job by Jeter yet again in this series. Honor the past and lose the season.

  • forensic

Jeter hit it in the air. That’s a victory in itself.

  • nycsportzfan

Jeter making sure Gardner coulden’t run there.lol It was like he was trying to stop Gardy from running.lol

  • MB923

Good game Whitley. Needed that one. Now if only the offense can wake up a bit.

  • No More

LOL LOL LOL LOL THORNTON AGAIN LOL LOL LOL LOL

  • Mike HC

Nobody can understand why Gardner doesn’t run more.

  • Improbable Island’s Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR)

Fucking Hell, just went on mlb.com to look up this game thus far. Glad I’ve missed it, that homer-saving catch would have ruined my night.

  • Nathan

I remember the years when we had a juggernaut offense and no pitching and feeling frustrated at times.

Right now, it’s frustrating all the time with no offense.

  • forensic

    That went well.

  • No More

LOL terrible display just utterly awful. The Rangers have no pitching other than Darvish.

  • MB923

Likely would not have scored, but no excuses on why Gardner remained on first for a good 10 pitches, give or take.

  • forensic

Oh good, Thornton coming in. What could possibly go wrong?

  • Cheddard Headley

As soon as Whitley gives up 1 run, and he will give up at least 1 run, the game will be over. You could put a pitching machine on the mound and these guys wouldn’t hit it.

    • Terry

A pitching machine called the Thorton-omatic?

So we’re assured the Rangers will be blanked this inning :)

  • No More

    LOL THORNTON LOL

  • Tom

    Thornton?

Well this seems like it will end well… Platoonz FTL?

  • nycsportzfan

Wow were really gonna lose this game.lol I all ready can see it. Were gonna stay with Whitley alittle to long and the Rangers will get the 1or2 runs they need and then we’ll go to the pen, but alittle to late. And you can’t blame Whitley at all.

Jeter swinging at ball 4 there and stopping gardy in his tracks and hitting a IF pop up is a omen. This is gonna end ugly.

God I hope reverse psychology is in play because of this post.

    • nycsportzfan

And there is the leadoff hit. Well I was wrong , Girardi went to the Pen quickly. Great Job for Whitley.

  • vicki

haha, thornton gets a lefty out despite himself. bling fucking squirrel.

  • nycsportzfan

    Great job by Thornton.

    • MB923

It’s either great job Thornton or bad job Martin.

  • trr

    Another lead-off batter on

  • MB923

Good job Thornton? Or bad job Martin?

  • Dorian

    We traded for Jack Parkman?

  • No More

Girardi mis-manages again he does what he should have done last night. He is so short-sighted. LOL THORNTON LOL LOL LOL. I love Girardi. He is so inept and lacks creativity.

  • Terry

    Thank you Texas.

Thornton isn’t a typical lefty with a slurve.

He’s a power pitcher who pitches more or less equally against righties and lefties.

  • nycsportzfan

The fact Whitley can lose this game makes my blood boil.

  • No More

I did not think I would see someone a worse bunter than Gardner.

    • Terry

      That made no sense.

Gardner is a proficient bunter, as is Martin.

The only reason Gardner doesn’t bunt more often is thatGardner has more power than Martin.

  • forensic

Wow, what a gift. This is a battle to see which offense can be more inept.

  • No More

LOL LOL LOL Girardi doing what he should have done last night only now he does not have the lead to protect. What a moron. LOL LOL LOL Manage it like game seven Girardi because your season ovah!!!!!!!!! OVAH!!!!!!!

  • Cheddard Headley

Thorton did the job and induced 3 straight bunts.

    • Rolling Doughnut

Martin did Thornton’s job and bunted three times.

  • Cheddard Headley

If by some miracle they do score this inning they’ll have Delin and Drob to win. Maybe McCann will hit one out. That seems to be our only shot.

  • forensic

Take the changeup right down the middle. Swing at the changeup in the dirt. Sounds about right.

  • Get Phelps Up

Blue Jays losing…I guess Greg is happy.

    • Get Phelps Up

      *Winning

      • Get Phelps Up

I posted my correction 4 minutes before my comment! That is impressive.

        • MB923

I’ve noticed that on here lately. Gotta be a bug in the system or something.

        • vicki

          linear time is an illusion.

          • Rolling Doughnut

            Time itself is an illusion.

          • ropeadope

            Curved, warped space-time (or something).

      • forensic

But that means the Red Sox are losing, which makes him not happy. He’s very conflicted at the moment.

  • vicki

    gemsome, cuso.

  • MB923

    Damn shift.

  • MB923

Yankees swept the Reds who have a 3.50 ERA. Yankees playing lousy against the Rangers who have a 5.04 ERA

“You just can’t predict baseball Suzyn”

  • Cheddard Headley

I think you have to PH Headley next inning and tell him to hit a HR. He’s the only one that is not yet infected. That’s their only chance to win.

    • MB923

Let it happen in the 9th for the walkoff!

  • Wayne

Wow Chase whitley pitching six shutout innings against the Texas rangers.
They may be in last place but that is known as a good hitting team !

    • MB923

Yep, and certainly better than the Yankees offense who can’t do anything against the worst pitching staff in the American League.

      • vicki

their offense is just about identical to the yankees’ this year, wrc+ and woba. and that? that is not good.

  • nycsportzfan

This sucks. This game really, really, sucks. And its crazy because it should be awesome when you get a start outta Whitley like we did.

  • forensic

Must be nice to be able to get a runner to second base.

  • Nathan

Not sure which will drive me to suicide first: repetitive MLB.tv commercials or this offense.

    • Terry

Make it a drinking game; death by alcohol poisoning isn’t the worst way to go :P

      • ropeadope

        But not the best, either.

  • vicki

    the dellin whiff. so yummy.

  • nycsportzfan

Someone needs to get it over the short porch, and call on Drob and escape by skin of teeth.

  • Tom

    Whew!

That inning had walk/bunt/bloop single (or IF error) seemingly written all over it.

Time for Headley to PH and hit a HR and end this thing,

  • Cheddard Headley

You’re our only chance, Chase. Ain’t no one else going to hit the game winner.

  • forensic

    He’s fitting right in.

  • ropeadope

    Hedley Lamarr, ladies and gentlemen.

  • Tom

David Robertson? In a non save situation at home?

    I’m floored…

    • forensic

He does it at home. Just never on the road.

      • Tom

LOL…What the hell was I thinking?!?

Just as I was about to praise Girardi and talk about snowballs and hell… I should have known better!

      • trr

        Kinda like my wife….

  • DMN

So I just got home, checked the score, and figured this was the game Darvish was pitching. Nope.

Wow is this offense horrible. Help us, Headley.

  • nycsportzfan

Please hold Drob. Ok, one down! Nice work. Be careful with Beltre please.

  • Cheddard Headley

Chase Headley will fit in just fine here.

  • Daniel

Oh my gosh. This is the kind of game that should bring on a closed door meeting. This is not good. And also why I am not on board with trading away valuable pieces. It won’t matter.

    • JonS

but the meeting should be about building for the future, not this lie about trying to compete.

    • nycsportzfan

I know the offense as a whole hasen’t done much but Beltran is a joke. This guy is just as automatic a out as there is in baseball. If hes playing hurt, then please stop.

  • forensic

    Beltran has a walk-off. McCann has a walk-off. It’s Ellsbury’s turn!

    • forensic

BOO! The Rangers are messing it up. It worked well when I said it for McCann and Ellsbury against the Reds.

  • forensic

What the hell is that? Someone staying on second base at the end of a play?!?

  • Rolling Doughnut

In the air, and pulled. Oh my.

    • forensic

It was even a fastball (though it was only 90). Not the usual hanging slider or curve that he can hit from a lefty.

  • Nsalem

13 xbh of the year for Derek.

  • forensic

Everything was looking so good tonight until that Jeter GIDP in the first inning. Since then it’s been all downhill.

  • Cheddard Headley

Jeter double! Captain Clutch lives! Now get him home. They won’t get another chance like this.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

  • vicki

damn, donnie hit a lot of doubles for such a brief career.

    • forensic

He was a monster for his too brief peak.

      • Yankee$

        Indeed.

      • trr

        Yes he was

  • Leg-End

    This offense, man.

  • WhittakerWalt

This lineup is such an indescribable piece of shit.

  • JonS

The ghost of a captain has a double!!

  • Slap-Ass

Fucking useless Beltran. Please retire with Jeter.

  • forensic

    Well, that figures…

  • WhittakerWalt

There have been so many times this season when I literally could not imagine this team ever scoring another run. That’s what this game feels like.

  • Tom

So they walked Ellsbury (lefty/lety matchup) to face Beltran hitting righty?

Not sure if that speaks worse about Beltran or Ron Washington.

    • WhittakerWalt

Who wouldn’t want to face this year’s version of Beltran? He can’t hit a lick.

    • Tom

      And of course… GIDP

Ron Washington is brilliant? (Looks up for the lightning to strike)

    • JonS

      definitely an indictment on Cashman!

      • trr

I think it’s an indictment on Beltran

    • Rolling Doughnut

It’s Beltran though. He sucks this year. Joe could use a little of Ron’s non binder management skills.

  • JonS

All that money…Zoilo could be doing this for minimum.

  • Cheddard Headley

And that’s probably the ballgame. Yankees have Kelley and then nothing. This team is absolutely pathetic.

    • E-6

Must be one of the lost negative lohud bloggers

  • Terry

    Nice play Kelly.

I thought that was a double.

  • forensic

Wow, KJ almost looked useable out there on that one.

    • Terry

It’s one play, but my first thought was,

“Oh no, it’s Kelly out there”

Johnson has mostly played Left Field, since he has pretty good speed, but the problem with shifting to opposite corners is that the fielders normally don’t get a good jump on the ball and have a tougher time judging the flight.

  • lovedthemick

Beltran needs some 5 hour energy

  • vicki

that was so awesome, kelly johnson.

  • Cheddard Headley

Kelly ran that down. Thought for sure that was trouble.

  • ropeadope

    DEE-FENSE

  • Slap-Ass

WTF is up with Ron Washington always chewing on shit? It’s so fucking annoying.

    • forensic

It’s a nervous habit since he’s going through withdrawal.

    • The Guns of Navarone

      He’s a crackhead… so there’s that.

  • Terry

    Nice play Headley.

I don’t expect to see Johnson at 3rd base for a while.
Looking at that inning, are Ichiro and Headley the new RF and 3B against lefties?

  • Cheddard Headley

Soley catches that one in his sleep. Wake me up with Headley wins the game with a HR.

  • Tom

So this half inning is pretty much the last hope?

(I guess maybe an inning out of Kelley could extend things?)

  • The Guns of Navarone

    JEFF FRANCIS!!!!

  • Slap-Ass

This Texas roster is full of nobodies.

    • WhittakerWalt

As compared to our lineup, which is filled with somebodies who hit like nobodies.

  • vicki

    infield defense!!

  • forensic

That’s not how you fit in, Headley. You’re supposed to drop it and then throw it 15 rows deep into the stands.

    • Terry

The Yankees have room for this misfit.

    • Slap-Ass

Well, at least he fit in offensively.

  • Rolling Doughnut

    Stellar infield D? Wow.

  • forensic

Come on, McCann. Use that short porch!

    • forensic

      Didn’t quite get it there…

      • Terry

Maybe the next adjustment with Long in the off-season should involve placing more weight on the back leg.

That’s a drastic change when you fiddle with the base of a hitter, but the result would be hitting more flyballs. McCann is ripping the ball, but that shift is taking away the results.

  • nycsportzfan

If we lose, this might be one of the worst losses i’ve seen from the Yanks in a seriously long time.

    • WhittakerWalt

If we lost, it’s not even close to the worst loss this season.

      • Daniel

Remind me which was worse. Cause I am honestly feeling the same way I was during that Mets series last year. Or the Mariners one. Take your pick. The Mets may have been worse just because it involved Mo blowing a save I think.

        • WhittakerWalt

Adam Dunn walk off bomb on an 0-2 pitch comes to mind.

          • nycsportzfan

Yeah, a game against the White Sox that was how long ago, over the 2nd in a row at home, during a late July Pennant race to the worst team in the league, with Yu Darvish on the mound tomorrow. Sorry , that W.Sox game would not of been worse.

  • Cheddard Headley

Kelley for 2 and then it’s over. They aren’t going to score.

  • vicki

that’s fine. if we get back to johnson’s spot in the lineup huffles and francis will have doomed us already.

  • forensic

And they continue to prolong the pain.

    This game may never end.

  • trollhunter

This effing team sux! Hit the damn ball!

  • Cheddard Headley

You could put these balls on tees and they wouldn’t hit them. Headley can be the hero but he won’t be because he put on the pinstripes.

  • vicki

i won’t be surprised if the cards don’t make the post-season.

  • WhittakerWalt

Remember last year, when Cervelli had a good month, and ever since then people have been convinced he’s a quality ML bat?

  • vicki

    one of us
    one of us

    • ropeadope

Big Bang Theory – The Panty Piñata Polarization

When Howard sarcastically chants, “One of us, one of us” after Leonard says, “You’re officially one of us!” this is a homage to the 1932 black-and-white film Freaks where deformed humans are joyfully chanting for the female protagonist Cleopatra (whom Penny is being compared to) “Gooble gobble! We accept her! One of us! One of us!”

      • vicki

my reference was to Freaks. i did plays with jim parsons in houston but i haven’t seen his tv show.

        • ropeadope

Yes, I felt you were referencing Freaks. But I did not know the side of you that did plays with professional actors. Very impressive!!!

  • Tom

The extra innings weapon is up!

Crazy thought – if you were the Rangers, would you walk Ellsbuy here?

    • forensic

Beltran’s terrible, but if you do that then Gardner’s just a wild pitch or an error away from scoring. I don’t think you can do that.

    • vicki

gardner on second, gardner on third; no difference. but you invite the threat of a wild pitch or a walk. i wouldn’t give ells shit to hit though.

  • vicki

by all means do bring in a lefty to face ellsbury.

  • No 2013 again

comon Cap, turn back the clock for one AB

    • vicki

he did that in the ninth.

      • No 2013 again

        =/

  • Cheddard Headley

This is the ballgame. Yankee pitching won’t last longer than Kelley. Ellsbury has to win it here.

  • forensic

Ok, here comes the Ellsbury walk-off hit! Just a couple innings later than I thought it would be.

  • Slap-Ass

8 hits in the last 20 innings. Fucking sad.

  • http://blah charlestonchew

You just know the Yankees are going to lose now that we’re down to Huff and Francis… the offense clearly cannot score.

  • Daniel

This kind of game was probably a common occurrence in spring training when they split up the Rangers into two teams and made them play against eachother. Not very fun to watch though.

  • trollhunter

Worst team iv seen since early 90’s. I cant watch this lame shite anymore. Im going to bed.

    • vicki

      did you miss last year?

  • Tom

Two more walks and the Yankees have this!

    • Daniel

      haha that’s great.

  • Terry

I’d be surprised if Ellsbury gets anything to hit with Beltran on deck.

  • Tom

I guess Kelley was just too damn effective to warrant a 2nd inning?

That or LEFTIES ARE UP! hide the woman and children, and righty relievers!

  • WhittakerWalt

I honestly can’t remember the last time this team had a real laugher.

  • forensic

    Ugh…

Ok, new rules, next team to reach third base wins.

  • Slap-Ass

I want to sleep but I’ve watched this crap since the beginning. Might as well watch it til the end. Someone, anyone, end it soon.

  • nycsportzfan

Ok, i’m known for high optimism, but I give up. I don’t even wanna watch the offense at this point. They are that bad. Its more just annoying then anything. Just total trash! Honestly a random 9 of us from these boards could of scored off this team by now.

    • Troll

      Than*

      Could’ve*

  • Yankeefan91

the Yankees must really hate Francis.

    • JonS

Watch a position player come in to pitch before Francis.

  • No 2013 again

Gotta me honest, it will take a miracle for Huff to keep this tied. Hope I’m wrong..

    • No 2013 again

      phew! nice job Huff!

  • vicki

hey, huffles with the perfect inning.

  • Tom

    Yankees 4-9 hitters: 1 single, 0 BB’s

Time for them to do something.

  • Daniel

Ok. This is it. It’s probably going to take a home run to win this because I don’t see them stringing together enough hits to bring around a run.

    • ropeadope

      Ichiro walk-off. Book it.

      • forensic

This would certainly be a nice time for him to want to hit a homerun.

        • ropeadope

Yup. I’ll take any hit now. That defensive flub means the Rangers won’t intentionally walk Ichiro.

          • ropeadope

            lol, didn’t consider the bunt.

  • trollhunter

I saw Huff eating ARODS “Gummies” in the dugout.

  • Cheddard Headley

I’d PR for Carlos here and try to win it now. Yankee pen won’t hold out much longer. Bunt him over and drive him in.

  • BKamm

This guy has a whip over two and an ERA over 8.

  • Tom

    Two more WP’s?

    3 hit batters/walks?

All types of ways to score….

  • BKamm

Game 99: Forget About Last Night
    By Michael Axisa

Tonight the offense will be worse.

Thought I would complete the thought.

  • Cheddard Headley

McCann has been so lucky with those fly balls. Now they have to win. Bunt em over and drive em in.

  • forensic

Ok, Roberts turn for his first walk-off…

    Or not. Damn you Texas!

  • vicki

    c’mon. have a moment, brains.

  • Slap-Ass

Well thank God Jeter’s not on deck.

  • Cheddard Headley

Great bunt by Ich. Now put the ball in play, Roberts. Just put it in play and good things will happen.

  • Slap-Ass

Alright all we need is 2 more wild pitches.

  • forensic

LOL! Can’t get hits when he rips the ball but keeps getting hits on those things.

  • Yankeefan91

lmaoo McCann deserves that hit hes been robbed to many times this year.

  • nycsportzfan

If we don’t score here, I might weep.lol

  • BKamm

Perfect time for Suzuki to bunt. He’ll make an out anyway.

    • forensic

He was facing a lefty. Those are the guys he can actually kind of hit.

      • BKamm

He has 11 RBI all year. One RBI this month and has hit .184 with RISP. He may as well bunt every time up. The OF plays him at the same depth as a short fielder in a slow pitch softball game. He kinda can’t hit. Period.

  • gageagainstthemachine

The way this game has been going our best hope might be a walk walk-off!

  • forensic

Come on, Cervelli! Just stick an arm out in front of the first pitch!

  • Cheddard Headley

Walking Roberts sets up Frankie to be the hero! Just put the ball in play!!!!

  • Daniel

Headley may get another chance to be a hero tonight.

  • Slap-Ass

    Golden Sombrero coming???

  • nycsportzfan

    hahahahhaahhahahahahahahahhahahahhahahahahahhahahahahhahah!!!!!!!!!

  • DMN

    Oh FFS!

  • forensic

lol, can’t make this shit up.

  • The Guns of Navarone

Do they get the run in? Yay or nay?

    • Tom

I’m going yay… but purely through the incompetence of the Rangers (walk, HBP, WP, error)

      • forensic

Yup. Seems primed for a walk-off walk.

        • Tom

Hell I give Cervelli THREE take signs (even with 2 strikes!)

  • GGBG Fan

What’s the rationale for bringing in Baker here? You talk about wanting to have your best reliever in for the most high leverage batters, that’s right now. Confused as to why Soria isn’t in. I like it though!

    • Joe Girardi

Is there a save situation? If you use your closer now, who would pitch if they got a lead?

    • Cheddard Headley

Because you can’t bring your closer into a tie game on the road. Reds did it a couple days ago and it blew up in their face.

  • E=6

    Tough break.

  • PoopChute

Please sweet baby Jesus let the Yankees win it here… Can’t watch much more of this

    • PoopChute

      You suck baby Jesus

  • Wolfgang’s Fault

I wish Wheeler was still due up here.

  • nycsportzfan

    Fuck You Yankees! Fuck Yooouuuuu!!!!

  • Cheddard Headley

There’s nobody else I’d rather have at the plate right now. Frankie gives this team energy and this walk off win will give them a shot in the arm, except this time he won’t get suspended for it.

  • nycsportzfan

    Come on Cervelli!!!

  • http://blah charlestonchew

This is awful. So, so awful.

  • Cheddard Headley

I can’t watch any more of this shit. That was their last chance.

    • Slap-Ass

And yet you’ll still be commenting for the next 10 scoreless innings.

  • Leg-End

Words fail me as much as the Yankee bats fail them.

  • No 2013 again

this team… bad team with no luck

    • nycsportzfan

All you can do is laugh. Now it looks as if Headleys gonna do what hes been all but one yr of his career, and thats nothing.

      • Daniel

It’s ok. A-Rod’s coming back next year.

        • nycsportzfan

Thank god we scraped out the win , or that one would have hurt more then any I can remember in recent memory.

  • nycsportzfan

    Again, hahhahahahahhaahahahahahhahahhaha!!!

  • Cheddard Headley

Walk off walk would be a fitting end!

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Got a feeling Texas just got some momentum
    After that inning

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

      Yep!

  • The Guns of Navarone

    Fuck. Just… fuck

  • forensic

lol, just forfeit now. This is pitiful.

  • vicki

    everything hurts.

  • DMN

    Chase Headley: True 2014 Yankee.

    • BrianMcCannon

      I laughed..

    • forensic

He must feel like he’s still watching the Padres offense.

  • BrianMcCannon

Godamn it. That would have been awesome.

  • No 2013 again

fuck this shit.. even if they win this battle against the worst team in the league, a team that won 5 of their last 30, what’s the point?

  • gageagainstthemachine

I’m not a fair weather fan, but for the life of me I can’t figure out why I watched this whole game?!

  • Daniel

Hopefully this loss discourages Cashman from even considering trading Judge, Severino, or hell, anyone. This team is awful. The only move that would make a difference for this team would be adding Cabrera and Trout.

    • The Guns of Navarone

Can they pitch? Haha don’t forget to add Kershaw to that equation.

      • Daniel

Haha, I was had literally typed his name in that comment but felt guilty after the staff threw up 12 zeroes tonight. So I deleted it and decided to focus on criticizing our pathetic offense.

  • JGYank

Wow. Just wow. 0-0. Will either side ever score a run? It’s like there are magnets in their gloves. RISP fails everywhere. Great game for ERAs… It is a great, exciting and evenly matched game, but it’s frustrating and should have been over an hour ago.

    • No 2013 again

You know your team sucks when they are evenly matched with the worst team in the whole fucking league..

  • Leg-End

    Annnnnnnnd there it is. URGH.

  • forensic

You just knew that was going to happen after the letdown of the last inning.

    • No 2013 again

It’s David Huff, it was a damn miracle to get 1 scoreless inning..

  • whitey

This team is REALLY hard to watch!

  • WhittakerWalt

    I’m out.

    • ropeadope

      C’mon, can’t leave now.

  • Yankeefan91

This sucks but i cant give up on my Yankees even if we haven’t scored today.

    • BKamm

Or most of yesterday, and maybe not Wednesday either.

  • The Guns of Navarone

It’s hard to believe there are worse teams in the league than the Yankees. They seem to sink to new lows about every other week.

    • Zzzzzzz

Agreed. The offense of the last two years has been harder to watch than the Yankees of 1990-91. If that’s possible.

  • forensic

Guess it’s time to start figuring out who will inevitably be sent down tonight for a fresh reliever tomorrow since they love freaking out and doing that.

    • gageagainstthemachine

Somewhere Scott Proctor’s phone is blowing up!

  • gageagainstthemachine

Matsui could be doing more on than mound with #55 than Huff seems to accomplish. And his mind would be on porn the whole time!

    • gageagainstthemachine

      *on the mound
Too defeated to even edit. God, I hope they somehow wake up in the bottom of the 13th and restore my wilted faith.

  • vicki

    rally, bitches.

    • gageagainstthemachine

If Girardi doesn’t have a page in the binder that says that in huge bold print…..he needs one!

  • Slap-Ass

It’ll be funny if we go 1-9 in the next 10 games and Cashman trades the farm for Lee.

  • forensic

lol, wonder if O’Neill realizes that he basically just called the Yankees a minor league team with a similar fanbase.

    • gageagainstthemachine

I kind of thought the same thing…at least about their current performance.

  • Tom

Come on Huff… do you really need to extinguish all hope?

At least give the fans the hope of a single misplayed it an inside the park HR in the bottom of the inning.

  • TheRealGreg

I mean this roster is atrocious.

  • Yankeefan91

good job Gardy lets go Yankees.

  • Slap-Ass

LOL. O’neill says Andrus trying to break this game open by swinging at the first pitch……Doesn’t he know that the solo HR broke the game open already?

  • Tom

So 1 run here and another 5-6 innings of scoreless ball anyone?

I want to see Ichro pitch!

    • vicki

      let’s!

  • BKamm

So there’s still nine days left to do something really stupid?

  • Terry

    Yankees set up.

    Walking Ellsbury?

    • vicki

washington’s managed smart tonight. that no-IBB was a misstep.

  • TheRealGreg

Everything Brian Cashman touches seems to turn to lead.

  • DMN

On the plus side, that was the last soul-sucking Wendy’s commercial I’m going to have to listen to tonight.

  • forensic

Time for Ellsbury’s walk-off! Just a couple more innings later than I thought it would be.

  • Terry

    Tied.

    Need one more.

  • Yankeefan91

thats why i dont give up on my yankees

  • gageagainstthemachine

Why did they have to play 13 innings to make it interesting? Channeling Mortal Kombat….
    FINISH HIM!

  • forensic

You just know they’re going to tie it up then leave the bases loaded and not score again for another 12 innings.

    • TheRealGreg

Gonna be tough for them to leave the bases loaded.

    • Slap-Ass

      You may be right.

    • Slap-Ass

No, I think they don’t score at all.

      • Slap-Ass

Well, everything I think tonight isn’t happening.

I think we’ll lose this game.

      • TheRealGreg

        Well that theory’s gone

    • forensic

      Close. Almost got there.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

    More hits.

  • gageagainstthemachine

Well, this could somehow get interesting! C’mon Cap!

  • ropeadope

    This team never gives up!

  • DMN

They’re actually pitching to Ellsbury? Okay, if that’s the way they want to do it.

  • Darl

    WOOHOO!

  • Get Phelps Up

    Ells!!! Tie game!

  • forensic

    This will never end…

  • Tom

    In play run(s)

Does anyone know any good anti-virus SW, I have to assume my computer is somehow infected?

    • Slap-Ass

      Ha

    • forensic

      lol

  • forensic

They can do this against Soria (and my fantasy team, of course) but not against the terrible starters and other relievers?!?

  • DMN

You didn’t actually think this team was going to get more than one run per inning, did you? Sigh….

And it’s another Wendy’s ad. This had better be worth it.

  • Slap-Ass

    Swung at ball 4. Dumb-ass.

  • gageagainstthemachine

Ah hell. When do the ball boys start pitching? This will never end. I thought for sure they were somehow gonna pull it out there.

  • Cheddard Headley

This game will last all night. Two teams matching each other in futility.

  • Tom

You’ve got to be shitting me…

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

    ICHIRO TO TEH PEN!

  • Old Man Time

How do teams do this? They go 12 innings without scoring then both miraculously score in the 13th.

  • gageagainstthemachine

F’ing bunt him in if that’s what it takes!

  • Darl

    Give us a Bloop

  • TheRealGreg

    Another Cashman folly

  • Yankeefan91

    free baseball again

  • PoopChute

Not gonna lie…I think I would have preferred a loss than tying it up and keeping this raging bitch of a pathetic baseball game going.

    • E-6

another die hard yankee fan. funny in a sad way

    • MB923

Pains me to say this but I kind of agree. Should have won it in the 12th though.

  • Cheddard Headley

Both teams are going to go another 12 innings without scoring. And now Frankie’s hurt.

  • Joe-Coby Ellsbury

WTF just happened that last half inning????? :(

  • MB923

Time for Questlove to come in the game.

    • gageagainstthemachine

      Yeah. Sorry. Even he left!

    • MB923

Well now he’s gone. Yankees could have used him.

    • vicki

that would make me so happy.

  • gageagainstthemachine

Jeff Francis?! I totally forgot we got Jeff Francis?!?
“Our fucking troubles are over, Dude.”
Please let this game end in the bottom of the 14th!

    • forensic

He hadn’t pitched in 20 days. I’m shocked he could even throw a strike.

      • gageagainstthemachine

I’m shocked anyone wants him to throw a pitch.

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

Alright, finally someone is wearing uncle Johnny’s number. #pride

  • Yankeefan91

any chance ichiro hits a bomb here ?

  • ropeadope

Fourth chance for Headley to wrap himself in glory.

    • ropeadope

      Yes!!!! Fourth time the charm.

  • MB923

Clock just ticked midnight. Now how about a walkoff hit.

  • Tom

    Headley’s still looming….

(I’m a bit pessimistic about fist pump, but maybe he’ll surprise?)

  • vicki

    hero!

  • forensic

    HALLELUJAH!!!!!

    Nice Headley!

  • iblamejay-z

    instant Yankee!!!!!

  • gageagainstthemachine

They just reported why Questlove left. Getting desperate in the booth.

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

You call 14 innings of baseball.

      • gageagainstthemachine

        This is baseball?

  • gageagainstthemachine

About time! Welcome to the Bronx Headley! Phew. Thankfully that one’s over and somehow it’s a W!!

  • MB923

Chase Headley (1 game) has more walkoff hits in the new Yankee Stadium than Derek Jeter (354 games)

    • E-6

      you’re a shit head

      • MB923

Hey I had to, sorry :(

And I love the captain and did not like the Headley trade that much either.

  • forensic

Just couldn’t score there and make it easy, huh?

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

    Welcome to New York!!!

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

That was pretty awesome. Loved how he embraced the gatorade shower too.

  • Tom

Potential winning run at 3rd with less than 2 out…. this seems vaguely familiar.

    I say suicide squeeze!

  • nycsportzfan

Imagine if Headley dosen’t come through in this situation?lol PLEASE god have ur first YANK moment here Chase!

    • nycsportzfan

Nice. Now i’m mad at myself because i’m a “just win” type guy and my frustration got the best of me in these posts. Good 1st moment for Chase. Hey, we escaped with a win and now Whitleys start wasen’t wasted as well as the Pen(we got the win). Overall good enough.

  • Cheddard Headley

Frankie should have won the game there. Roberts should have ran home because now they won’t score. Headley has had 50 chances to be the hero.

    • TheRealGreg

      Idiot

      • Troll

        Ass hat

    • Daniel

Choo has a good arm. And look who was the hero anyway.

    • E-6

      you’re a shit head

    • Kenny

For God’s sake it’s “have RUN” and not “have ran”!

  • Yankeefan91

and jeff Francis with the win.

  • Winter

    CHASE!!!

  • Terry

    Headley’s baptism as a Yankee.

  • Tar

    Cashman is a genius!!

    Not really, but I’m tired

  • BrianMcCannon

    True Yankee?

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek Roadgeek Adam

    BOO YA

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

And…..Jeff Francis just got the “W.”

    He’s our good luck charm!

    ;)

  • Cheddard Headley

HEADLEY IS A TRUE YANKEE!!!!!!!!! A LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT

  • ropeadope

Sterling: Meredith is now talking with Headley, and when Meredith finishes her great interview, Susan will have her crack at it.

    Huh?

  • Yankeefan91

Great job headley n you see u can’t give up on your team I no I didn’t

  • Slap-Ass

All I know is I can finally sleep. Hot Damn!

  • hogsmog

That game was like watching two fat slugs wrestle

  • Cool Lester Smooth

    TRU YANKEE(c)!!!!!

  • Tom

Someone’s got to teach Headley what to do with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 out.

Much needed win with Darvish on the mound tomorrow.

  • MP

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Favorite game in such a long time. Wow.

    • Stoph

Nice ending, but by no means was that a favorite game of mine (in a long time). It was 14 painful innings and 1 fun at bat.

      • Terry

I guess I’m the only one who thought that was an exciting and tense game.
