Wednesday Night Open Thread

Swept: Yanks drop fifth straight, fall 6-3 to Rays
Sabathia goes 3.2 innings in second minor league rehab start

You might have seen this floating around the internet today, but if not, here is an excerpt from the upcoming book “Biogenesis and the Quest to End Baseball’s Steroid Era.” It details how MLB gave Alex Rodriguez a therapeutic use exemption to use take testosterone during his MVP winning 2007 season. The league responded to the excerpt with a statement saying the clinical approvals were confidential. It’s pretty interesting. Check it out.

Here is your open thread for the night. The Mets are playing and that’s about it as far as sports go. Good night to forget about baseball. Talk about the A-Rod story, tonight’s games, the Yankees’ international signings, this afternoon’s loss, or anything else right here.

  • RetroRob

What time does the game start tonight? I’m sure Nuno will match his last start.

  • JGYank

Yanks really got off to a great start with the international signings. Can’t wait to see these guys enter the system. When does the signing period end?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

July 1st of next year. The signing period is technically always open, but July 2nd is the age cutoff date when a new pool of players becomes eligible every summer.

      • JGYank

So basically the only reason these guys didn’t sign earlier are their age and teams used up their allowed $ pool?

        • RetroRob

There are some rules going on here, although not clear on them. For example, on July 1 next year, why can’t the Yankees sign several of the prospects that are expected to be signed the next day, but have it count against the prior year’s draft money?

          • JGYank

Yeah that would have been great since they’re going all out this year, but as mike explained with the cutoff date I’m guessing they wouldn’t be eligible to be signed yet.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting

I think players that were age eligible for this signing period already had to be registered with MLB.
Anybody not age eligible for this period as of July 2 won’t be eligible until next July 2.

Also, fwiw, each signing period ends on June 15, followed by a dead period until the new signing period begins on July 2.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting

              From MLBTR:
In other words, any players that are already 16+ years of age or will be 16 by Sept. 1, 2014, will be eligible to be signed.

              http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....rimer.html

So, I guess players already 16 can sign now.
Players who turn 16 by Sept. 1 can sign after they turn 16.
Players who turn 16 after Sept. 1 have to wait until next July 2.

And all players eligible for this signing period must have registered with the Office of the Commissioner by May 1.

              • RetroRob

So maybe they Yankees are eyeing some 15-year-olds for September. (Yes, it felt wrong writing it and looks worse reading it.)

                • Jorge Steinbrenner

They told Rob they were nineteen.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Yeah, really great day for acquiring talent for the future. The present certainly overshadows it a bit, but a great job today.

  • Mike Myers

Forget the A-Rod book…This is a much better story on some of the yanks youngsters…

    http://www.fangraphs.com/commu.....all-stats/

This is on rob R. Nice quick read…

  • Yankeefan91

Why can’t they name the other players mlb gave PED to ?

    • RetroRob

It’s confidential medical information. Only A-Rod has this stuff leaked on him.

    • vicki

      rhetorical question?

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

      Ortiz ate them.

      • Chip Rodriguez

EMPANADAS! Shrim[ MOFONGO! Arroz con LECHE! Ped EVIDENCE!

    • WhittakerWalt

Because this “confidential” stuff only gets leaked if you’re an asshole who everyone hates, like ARod. If you’re an asshole who everyone loves, like Ortiz, it stays confidential.

      • Now Batting

There’s a 99.9% likelihood it’s only one or two people who have access are leaking info. It’s not hard to think up reasons why that person would LOATHE Arod more than any other player.

        • Preston

That’s not really the point. I get why it’s happening. But it shouldn’t be happening. If one or two leaks happened I’d get it. If MLB apologized, or took some action to rectify it I’d feel a little bit better about it. But as it continues to happen at some point it’s an institutional problem in MLB and they’re either completely negligent in their handling of these records or their involved in the leaks.

          • Now Batting

All valid points, but my contention is if there is one asshole being smart about it, and only leaking information sporadically, he/she is nearly impossible to catch. Honestly I don’t enjoy defending MLB, but I understand how this can occur without being indicative of systemic negligence or fraud.

  • Preston

“the clinical approvals were confidential” and MLB always keeps confidential information confidential.

  • Rolling Doughnut

OK, let’s see. They let ARod take testosterone in 2007 to treat the shrunken testicles he got from juicing from HS to the bigs. Got it.

  • Preston

Does anyone know what the probable timeline is for today’s IFA signings? Will any of them show up in the DSL this season, will they be in the GCL next season, or will it be the year after?

    • Yankee$

I’d guess most of them will be in the GCL in ’16.

    • n0exit

To sign a player must turn 17 by 1 sept 2015. They are not eligible to play in milb unless they are 17 by the end of the season. This means the earliest these kids can play stateside is next year. I’m not entirely sure about DSL, but if you look at Leo Molina he signed last year and came to extSt and gcl this year. Some of the big signings should follow this path. But Badler noted that with the model the yanks are using you’ll probably see these kids trickle through over the next 2 signings periods when the Yankees can’t sign big ticket guys.

  • JGYank

Watched the video on severino. Didn’t know he had such great stuff. Looks promising.

  • TC

The stats quo has got to change with this team. I think I’m normally a level headed fan, and I think Cashman has done a good job throughout his tenure, but I think it’s a complete travesty that he has done nothing at all with the struggles of this team. I’m not expecting these AAA guys to come in and be MVP’s, but it is passed due to give them an opportunity, and even a couple of arginal upgrades could have a significant impact with where they are on the win curve. Cashman acknowledged himself a couple weeks ago that they need a shake-up, yet they are still trotting out players who have been generally useless and they have no long term commitment to. It’s time to dip in to the minors and see what they can do. Staying the course right now looks like the best case scenario is just over .500.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Something will give at some point, but some of the fanbase clearly has more faith in what’s behind door #2 than they do.

I don’t need to see half of Scranton up, as some want, but in definitely softening on my own veteran-hugging te more of Soriano I’m seeing. That’s for sure.

      • TC

Yeah I don’t mean bringing in all of the Railriders either. Specifically, I want them to cut bait on Soriano and Roberts, option Solarte down, and push Ichiro back to being a part timer.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

I don’t get the Roberts thing. I know it’s in comparison to guys who are truly doing terribly, but he’s been healthy and pretty inoffensive throughout. I know people are excited to see Refsnyder, but I just don’t really see Roberts as the problem thus far.

I’d be fine with never seeing Johnson or Solarte again. Sori can come back for Alfonso Soriano Bobblehead Night next season after retirement.

I honestly would give Roller that chance a few people want him to get, but he just doesn’t work position-wise for this team. I’d have Sizemore up here tomorrow, though.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting

Roberts would be fine if they had a solid 1-8, and he was the #9 hitter.
            Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

Really he’s a subpar starter on a team that can’t much afford subpar starters, and provides no versatility as a potential bench option.
I’d actually prefer Johnson over Roberts, as he has more offensive potential, is less of a risk to just break, and has some positional versatility. Neither should be an everyday starter. Johnson is more suited to a bench role.

(or just get rid of both)

            • JGYank

              Agree

            • Jorge Steinbrenner

If I had to place Johnson, Roberts, and Solarte in “who do you lose first” order, I’d place Roberts last on that list at the moment. I agree the team could do better. At least we’re not staring at three more years of Omar Infante.

              • Need Pitching & Hitting

It would really depend who the replacement was. If it was Refsnyder, or another 2B to start, there would be no point to Roberts on the roster.

                • Jorge Steinbrenner

I’m not so sure as to what the value is in replacing Roberts with Refsnyder before you do something about Solarte.

I’d be fine with swapping out Solarte for Sizemore and Roberts for Refsnyder, but I’d rather see the former happen much sooner than the latter.

                  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Of all of the players being mentioned (Solarte, Johnson, Roberts, Sizemore, Refsnyder), only one has a realistic potential to be a starting caliber player for the Yankees going forward, which is why he’d be the priority (as soon as he’s reasonably ready).

That said, apparently Wheeler is getting called up, which would probably make Solarte the first man out.

          • Preston

Johnson is better than Roberts. He’s better at defending his position, he’s hit better, he’s younger/more durable and he’s more versatile.

  • Bo Knows

Game 1 of a dbl header Scranton is playing

    Jose Pirela 3/4
Refsnyder 1/4 but apparently he was robbed of another hit with a low line drive shot right at the 2nd baseman

    Game 2 is currently playing

  • RkyMtnYank

Too funny to think that the best move the Yankees could make right now would be for ARod’s suspension to be lifted because of all this crazy stuff. Seriously though, I’m willing to bet a dollar that whenever Arod does come back he totally tears it up, just his style to give a big FU to everybody who thinks he’s all done, me included!

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

No chance that a-Rod tears it up when he comes back. He could be serviceable and even a quasi-upgrade. Anything better than .250/330/.420 and you’re dreaming.

      • vicki

that ops would put him right around tied with ells for third-best on the yanks, and around fourth best in the league at third base.

        i’ll take it.

incidentally, how the hell does solarte still have a .736 ops and 109 wrc+??

  • MB923

“It details how MLB gave Alex Rodriguez a therapeutic use exemption to use take testosterone during his MVP winning 2007 season”

Along with 110 others, but yeah let’s only call out one of those players!

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

One of only 2 to get an exemption for an “androgen deficiency medication” like testosterone.

      • MB923

Hopefully the other name gets revealed too then in that case. It’s probably Manny or Bonds. Likely Manny.

    • Bud S.

      Cough.

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

110 players didn’t receive an exemption. 2 did.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

111 players received some type of banned substance exemption (mostly for ADHD meds).

2 (including ARod) received exemptions for an “androgen deficiency medication” like testosterone.

        • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

          I think that’s what I said.

        • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

2 received exemption for testosterone is what I meant. I see the discrepancy now.

  • Preston

8 of the top 30 prospects plus 14 other IFAs today. Cash and Hal are literally trying to buy all the prospects.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

It’s pretty amazing to watch. That was as “all in” as you can get.

      • Preston

Too bad none of them were Cuban CashmanFailed#

        • Yankee$

Some of them could be embedded Cubans. That won’t come out for years.

          • Jorge Steinbrenner

They’re 15. They may not even know it.

            #stealthcubanz

  • Yankeefan91

Future hall of famer Mookie Betts hits first hr

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

You kidding me? A-Rod insisted on an ’09 championship ring being made for Yuri Sucart?

And that happened AFTER Sucart was banned from major league parks by MLB?

I’m not getting into the pile-on-ARod fracas, but that’s disgusting.

    • vicki

come on, man. they give out hundreds of those things. at least yuri earned it.

      • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

I guess we can stop acting like rings mean anything, at least

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    ?@RailRidersTT
Sounds like Zelous Wheeler may have been promoted.

    ——
    Solarte out???

    • vicki

i’d think so if it was pirela. not sure now.

did they make the sori move??

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

I would think Pirela would be more likely to replace Soriano, as they’ve had him playing mostly OF now.

I’d think Wheeler would replace an IF, as he’s played mostly IF.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

          Pirela hasn’t played 3B since 2012. I doubt he’d replace Solarte.

        • vicki

yep, you’re right. i had it in my head wheeler was primarily an outfielder because i saw him play there in march.

          so, dfa solarte likely.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting

Maybe just option him, though I’m not sure what the 40-man roster move would be in that case.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

A happy early 4th of July to Wolfgang’s Fault.

  • vicki

    corresponding move! now, please!

  • Joseph Swit

If im Cashman here is my radical plan to fix the Yankees. Call it Operation Wrath of Cashman.
    1. Fire Kevin Long immediately. Let me preface this by saying that I dont think he is responsible for the team’s struggles but if you accept that the coach isn’t entirely to blame for a team’s failures then what he adds to their success is marginal at best. Obviously we havent seen much results from the Yankee offense therefore firing him can’t hurt the offense (we hope). The firing would be more symbolic to send the players the message that if they don’t get it together then heads will roll, nothing communicates that better then making the players feel like they cost Long his job. It’s a harsh move but if the Yanks are in the business of winning a championship then they have to make the tough calls.
    2. DFA Roberts, DFA Ryan and send down Solarte. In their place bring up Pirela, Refsnyder and Murphy. Murphy is debatable but I more want to see what he can do after the solid start in limited ABs at the ML level. He would likely be a placeholder for more seasoned reinforcements via trade. Hopefully Adrian Beltre (although prob not).
    3. Bench McCann for the 4 games in Minnesota. Let Cervelli and Murphy each start two games and if one of them gets hot then ride that streak out. If none of them produces much over what McCann then let him start again in Cleveland. 15Mil or no 15Mil we need to light a fire under McCann and show the team that no one’s job is safe. If Girardi can bench Arod in the playoffs he can sure as hell show McCann the bench for a few games to get his head straight.
    4. Replace Soriano with Pirela in the RF platoon. Soriano is too expensive to DFA and has more upside then Roberts so keeping him around and hoping Pirela can produce above Soriano’s current clip (which shouldnt be too hard) seems reasonable.
    5. Obviously have Refsnyder start at 2nd.
Desperate times call for desperate measures and as I think everyone who has watched this team of late agrees, this situation is not going to get better on its own. They can change nothing and be a .500 team or worse. Or they can make some radical changes, they might not work and could even make the team worse but the alternative is missing the playoffs again. I’d rather go 70-92 letting the young guys develop in the Bigs then going .500 with veterans that will be gone next year (Soriano, Ichiro, Roberts). And hey who knows? It just might work and give the team the spark it needs to win the East(which is very winnable to say the least).

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

“Soriano is too expensive to DFA”

They owe Soriano about $2.5M for the rest of the season (the Cubs are paying most of his salary)

They owe Ryan about $4M on the remainder of his contract (including player option)

    • Old Man Time

“DFA Roberts, DFA Ryan and send down Solarte. In their place bring up Pirela, Refsnyder and Murphy.”

So you’re getting rid of both 3rd basemen, bringing up a second baseman and an outfielder, and carrying three catchers on the 25 man roster. ok

“…show the team that no one’s job is safe”

      Guaranteed contracts are just that..guaranteed.

“…Soriano is too expensive to DFA”

Soriano is only owed approximately $2.5M for the rest of the season. However Ryan is owed approximately $4M through 2016 and you’ll DFA him?

      • Joseph Swit

My bad on the Soriano numbers, I forgot the Cubs are eating most of his contract.

Carrying 3 catchers isn’t the most ideal option but they’ve done it before and its more based on wanting to see how Murphy produces if hes given a couple of consecutive starts.

        • Old Man Time

          But who’s playing 3B?

          • Joseph Swit

They’ve called up Wheeler which changes some things. Wheeler plays 3B, Refsnyder at 2nd. I’d still want to bring up Pirela to take Soriano’s spot but that prob wont happen.

    • Preston

This crap is childish pseudo psychology. No struggling MLB player needs a “fire lit under them”. Brian McCann is most likely taking his offensive struggles harder than you possibly could. Which is probably compounding the problem rather than solving it.

  • 461deep

Lot of DFA recommendations here but mostly only low or 1 year salary players. Problem is SOME big $$$ guys just as deserving of DFA.
McCann is a nice guy, but so is Roberts & all of them. Bringing up a rookie or 2 may garner some hits but won’t transform the team to a large degree. Team is playing to their level after a pretty good April & early May behind Tanaka mostly and hot streaks from Ellsbury, Beltran, Gardner, Tex, Ichiro & Solarte. Jeter is an Icon beyond criticism. Passed Lou who lost 3-4 years at least due to ALS, in 2b hits. Derek sure to make HOF but Ruth, DiMaggio,& others did as well but did not get the same hands off treatment.
