After a throwing program, a setback, and another throwing program, Carlos Beltran returns to right field today for the first time since May 11th. A bone spur in his throwing elbow limited him to DH duties over the last three months.

I’m not sure playing the defensively challenged Beltran in the outfield actually helps the Yankees, but this is year one of a three-year deal, so if they can avoid sticking him at DH full-time, they should do it. You can bet the Rays will test his arm this afternoon. Here is Tampa’s lineup and here is the Yankees lineup:

  1. LF Brett Gardner
  2. DH Derek Jeter
  3. CF Jacoby Ellsbury
  4. 1B Mark Teixeira
  5. RF Carlos Beltran
  6. 3B Chase Headley
  7. 2B Martin Prado
  8. C Frankie Cervelli
  9. SS Brendan Ryan
    RHP Shane Greene

The Tropicana Field roof is coming in handy this series because it’s raining again in St. Petersburg. This afternoon’s game will begin a little after 4pm ET and you can watch on YES locally and Fox Sports1 nationally. Here are the Fox Sports1 channel listings. Try to enjoy the game.

Injury Update: Brian McCann (concussion) is expected to be activated off the 7-day disabled list and play in tomorrow’s series finale. He is not active today.

I think in this game we have a good chance to get the win. Smyly is an average pitcher at best. He is a a beast vs Lefties: avg of .177 and OPS of .468 but gets mashed by righties: avg .299 and OPS .868. The righties heavy line-up that Girardi is showing fits well the scouting report.

  • ZachA

This offense has been abysmal this month, just check out the August numbers. Ouch.

    Lineup
    Gardner .224/.321/.388, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SB, 7 BB, 10 K
    Jeter .240/.255/.340, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 0 SB, 0 BB, 7 K, 3 R

    Teixeira .222/.282/.333 1 HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 7 K, 2 XBH
    Beltran .245/.302/.429, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 BB, 12 K, 5 XBH

    • Go Win

Wouldn’t have guesses that Suzuki is the hottest yankee this month. Ouuuch! By the way, he is also the one who has had more success vs Smyly: he is 3 for 7 against him in spite of Smyly’s success vs lefties.

      • Go Win

Sorry, Pinnedarda is right, Cervelli then Suzuki in terms of yankees productivoty this month.

    • http://yankees.lhblogs.com/ Need Pitching & Hitting

By far the worst in baseball over the past week: 174/222/261, 31 wRC+

    • JimK

Exactly why Tanaka’s return is irrelevant

      • http://yankees.lhblogs.com/ Need Pitching & Hitting

It likely will be irrelevant to their chances this year, but it’s not like the Yankees are likely to continue hitting that badly.

  • Michael Pineddarda

Frankie’s the only one hitting and he either hits 8th or 9th. Today will be another L. Unless Greene throws another 8 inning shutout this will be another L. If they get swept someone better lose their job come Monday.

  • Mickey Scheister

31-10 to close the season out equals a possible postseason berth…they can do it, but they MUST put their bats into it.

  • Madrugador

Beltran in the field, Tanaka and Pineda on the mound- doesn’t matter this team does not have what it takes to get to the post season. Of course I predicted they would win 92 games this year too.

  • Go Win

Smyly good outing vs the Rangers seemed to be more of a consequence of the weak Rengers offense than Smyly doing anything special.

    • Willkamm

Well if we’re talking about weak offenses, I think this one qualifies.

    • Literally Figurative

I might take Texas’ offense over ours.

  • Go Win

What he did to Gardner is ecactly what Smyly will try to do all day. Get ahead of the batter with the FB and then strike him out with the CB. He uses the FB more than. 50% of the time. His patterns are very consistent.

  • argenys

Question: does this work for next year, 1 year stopgap Jimmy Rollins trade for salary dump and cervelli and a random prospect, Rusney Castillo/Refsnyder @ 2b, Arod/Prado @ 3b, beltran/prado/refsnyder/Castillo @ rf ?

  • UnKnown

Beltran returns to the scene of the crime in RF at the TROP. Watch out for the wall Belty

  • Literally Figurative

    2015 can’t come soon enough.
Although knowing the Yanks, we’ll trying to dig our way out of bad spending by doing more bad spending.
Oh yeah, that 1st inning on offense looks like the last 50 innings or so.

    • Willkamm

Does Ellsbury’s at bat count as getting the ball out of the infield?

      • Literally Figurative

Duly noted, that is an improvement.

  • UnKnown

Win the next 5 in a row and see what the standings look like. I bet if they can do that, you will see only two back of M’s for the W.C. Which again puts them right there.

Now the tough part is actually winning the next 5. But that is where this needs to start.

  • Go Win

This patient Rays hitters will represent a good test to Greene’s control skills. If he can locate I like his chances.

  • UnKnown

Let’s Go Greene. Way to get out of that inning.

  • Go Win

Smyly is a fly ball pitcher (less than 40% ground balls). Hope this anemic offense can show some power today.

  • argenys

    We actually scored!!!!

  • UnKnown

    LIFT OFF

  • http://yankees.lhblogs.com/ Need Pitching & Hitting

    That’s a welcome change.

  • Literally Figurative

What is this circling the bases on a light jog thingy that Prado is doing?

  • UnKnown

How about those aren’t the only 2 runs now.

  • Go Win

I was about to say that Prado’s start with the yankees was beyond slow: .473. And there came the HR!

  • Go Win

It’s not only that righties are hitting Smyly a lot this year – also they are hitting for power. Smyly BABIP is .313, well above league average.

  • Donnie Baseball

This game is about one thing, and one thing only, the continued development of Shane Greene and audition for next year.

    • Go Win

That combination of a tailing sinker with power and horizontal movement and the plus slider has long legs in my point of view. He was supposed to have a change up which he is not throwing. Would love to see a bit more of that pitch to keep hitters honest from the sinker.

    • Septhinox

Greene is already the 2nd out 3rd (depending on Pineda) best option they have on the roster for next year.

  • Go Win

The reason why McCann was not activated today was the extreme splits of Smyly vs lefties.

    • UnKnown

      Yup.

  • Donnie Baseball

2014: Ellsbury, Melky, Beltran, Tex, ARod, McCann, Castillo, Drew, Prado

      2015

    • argenys

      where’s gardner?

  • Go Win

Thanks to Kiermaier for that present. That ball was well off the plate. Greene has been hit much more with runners on (.306 with men on, .185 with bases empty), so the present is well received.

  • Trisha

Just checking in to say GO YANKEES!!! This is tough weekend for me with work and other commitments. Hope the Yanks can find a way to keep the lead in the game and increase on it.

Does anyone think that Yankees have a shot of a snowball in hell to make the postseason? I genuinely don’t know the numbers needed or how many teams we’d have to hopscotch at this point – and whether there’s a realistic chance of doing it.

The more I’ve been thinking about it, the more I wish there was some kind of sparkplug in the clubhouse. But new players generally don’t take on that role I wouldn’t think, especially on a team like the Yankees.

There was a time when Brian Cashman would meet up with the team and give them gentle hell.

Our Yanks are pretty much a rudderless ship.

    Later y’all.

  • Go Win

If he gets consistency in that change-up, watch out. Greene could be for real.

  • UnKnown

Hey the pitching is just fine again. #shocker

  • Go Win

This has to be rated as another anemic performance by the offense. We feel it a little less thanks to Greene’s pitching performance. Even with all the offensive struggles, I expected more against a pitcher that is average at best as Smyly is.

  • UnKnown

    Ground ball please

  • gageagainstthemachine

Out shopping and I check the game score and see Greene has 10 Ks already!? How’s he actually looking on the mound? What’s working for him? Sorry if this has already been addressed, but thought someone replying would be easier than trying to scroll through all the comments. Thanks!

    • Go Win

His usual stuff of sinking fastball with tail and a power slider. It’s just that he has been very crisp all around, specially locating the slider to both sides of the plate.

    • CashmanNinja

Everything is working for him. His slider/sinker has sick movement. He’s pitching inside to righties where it starts on the plate and then hooks in towards them. He made Longoria look foolish earlier on a strike 3 where it started at the middle of the plate and then completely handcuffed him for strike 3. He’s got it moving down and away also when he wants to hit the outside corner. It just looks very sharp and there’s lots of movement.

  • UnKnown

Not sure if Joe can let these guys see Greene for a 4th time today. Especially with only a one run lead. How about Dell for the 7th and DROB for a 6 out save.

    • Go Win

I think Greene will start the 7th but Betances will be warming up and ready to come in as soon as the first batter reaches base.

      • UnKnown

I’m on board with that. 8 and 9 hitters due up in the 7th and that will put him over 100. Hook him for Jennings.

        • Go Win

          Sounds like a plan!

  • UnKnown

If the damn offense would ever get off their ass, this wouldn’t be such a stresser.

  • UnKnown

Smiley is tiring also. One more good blast would be great.

    • Go Win

Runner on first with no outs . . . And the offemse can not bring him even to second . . . Again.

  • Michael Pineddarda

This is a mirror image of that Baltimore O’s game. They either win 2-1 or they lose. Delin has to go 2, Drob 1 and they have no margin for error once again.

    • Go Win

Absolutely true. That has been the problem. The slightest mistake and is almost an authomatic loss.

  • http://yankees.lhblogs.com/ Need Pitching & Hitting

    wtf???

  • Michael Pineddarda

IDIOT! DEFENSE FAILS AGAIN. This game is lost if that run on 2nd scores. Where’s Delin?

  • Donnie Baseball

Concentrate on what Green is doing and not the outcome or win/loss. All of this is prologue for 2016 &2017.

    • Donnie Baseball

      Greene

  • UnKnown

Welp Hold on to you Butts. Here comes Shawny

  • Tar

I know people are out of position…but how many times is this team going to screw up assignments on a bunt play? It has happened way to many times this year. At some point in time you have to say the coaches are not doing their job

    • UnKnown

And why are so many people out of position. It’s not because of injuries. It’s because the roster construction of this team is an Abortion. And Cashman is the killer.

But by all means, you FO’s Bozo’s keep denying it.

  • forensic

Just got to start listening about an inning ago, right when Ryan was picked off 1st. Now they have that apparently terrible defensive play. Are they trying to give this one away?

    • Go Win

Just when we were saying that this offense does not gibe any margin for an error, comes the IF mistake.

  • http://yankees.lhblogs.com/ Need Pitching & Hitting

    Shawn Kelley?

I fear that means something is wrong with Betances. Or DRob.

    • forensic

You would certainly hope (so to speak) there’s something wrong with one of them, otherwise there’s something wrong with Girardi’s head. Robertson’s had 8 days off so is no problem to go more than one inning (though I know that’s not allowed with your closer).

    • Go Win

Strange decision . . . To say the least.

  • Donnie Baseball

Wins and losses do not matter anymore. Greene pitched well yet again. The rest of the game means nothing. Mission accomplished. Look forward to his next start and Pineda’s.

  • stuart

where do I start. ready to blow another 1. our great SS ryan who cannot hit and has no clue.
offense on fire again.. literally they are totally inept.
left greene in at least 1 batter to long….saving Robertson for next season.

  • UnKnown

Get out of this inning no worse than tied it has to be a win right?

  • forensic

And sounds like the shift cost them another out there with a chance to get the lead runner out at 3rd.

  • forensic

Now Rich Hill is warming? There’s gotta be something wrong with Betances.

  • UnKnown

Get out of it now and find a way to score one more run.

  • CashmanNinja

And Green gets fucked out of a win. Thanks to the offense that makes more money in a few games than most people make in a fucking year.

  • stuart

tie game but our offense has 2 runs so they can celebrate…if that is the Yankees tex, ellsbury, or about 6 other guys go down looking… the beat goes on…

  • Michael Pineddarda

And that’s the baseball game. Yankees won’t get another runner past 1st base. Why Delin isn’t in there I’ll never know.

  • Mickey Scheister

Kelley, please don’t blow this. The Mariners DFA’d this fucker. Now he’s in high leverage situations for the Yanks, meanwhile an actual FA bullpen arm is doing quite well in Seattle. The construction of this team…

  • stuart

Kelly has 225 BA against and a ERA of mid 4’s.. he is another gutless relief pitcher.

  • Tar

    great job Kelley

  • UnKnown

So because infield defense doesn’t matter I fully expect MLB to rule that the run the Rays just scored now doesn’t count. LMAO

    • Tar

Had someone covered 2nd on that bunt…they would not have scored.

I can deal with errors but mental errors, especially ones that are repeated are inexcusable. I don’t blame Headley on that play at all.

      • UnKnown

        Yup. That’s right

  • stuart

we got 4 hits get the parade going.. texiera got a single give him an extension…
headley fits right in with his terrible hitting. prado has played 2b many times in his career either him or ryan f’d up. but hey ryan is a gold glover. Joke.. he also is literally one of the worst hitter in MLB…

  • 518forever

Theyre trying to get a high draft pick next year. Maybe theyll draft Mo’ne Davis?? Shes naassssty.

  • forensic

Rays radio now says Betances is warming. I guess there’s something wrong with Robertson instead, maybe.

    • Tar

Kelley needs to be able to get batters out in high leverage situations too. It can’t always be Dellin and Drob.

      • forensic

They don’t have the luxury of playing around with Kelley and experimenting with Rich Hill at this point. There were 7 or 8 outs to go. Betances has been off 2 days with another coming on Monday and Robertson has been off for 8(!) days. If healthy, there are only two pitchers who should’ve pitched for those outs.

        • Tar

          Rich Hill is another story.

I see your point, and I’m not saying your wrong… But I just think they need Kelley to be good down the stretch.

          • forensic

Of course they do, but with the rest they’ve had and the upcoming rest, there’s no need to push their luck with anyone other than the top two.

    • CashmanNinja

If there’s anything wrong it’s with the offense.

  • stuart

it is the 8th inning. nothing wrong with Robertson.

    • http://yankees.lhblogs.com/ Need Pitching & Hitting

      Completely missing the point…

  • stuart

yanks late in games have the worst offense I have seen in a long time..
Brendan ryan ozzie smith junior after his brain fart leaves the game. in essence he has zero value….

  • Mickey Scheister

Replace one .200 hitter with another, lmao.

  • stuart

    the nightmare continues….
odds of yanks winning this game I say 33%… they are that bad

    • CashmanNinja

33%? Wow, that’s higher than I’d have thought they’d have had even at 1st pitch…at least with how their offense is (not) playing.

  • stuart

drew adding to his immense value to the team. I cannot see this guy leave town fast enough. what a family. jd and steven, they are the whitebread version of aroid… with boras and the contract crap year after year…..
pitch betances in the 8th and Robertson in the 9th they don’t score and they lose so be it….

  • Mickey Scheister

Eight pitch inning, sitting at the movie theater about to watch Guardians of the galaxy for the second time with my two oldest. Hopefully Rich Hill can actually get a batter or two out. Go Yankees? Perhaps they’ll get a high/protected draft pick at this rate?

  • stuart

the yanks have scored in what 1 inning out of the last 16 or more???

    • UnKnown

scored in 2 innings out of the last 23

  • Go Win

I must confess I don’t get this written in stone 8th inning role for Betances. To me he had more value when he was coming in when opposing hitters were on base and the team needed to resolve a messy situation.

    • Tar

I don’t have stats in front of me… but I don’t think he has been used exclusively an EIG. I think he has pitched multiple innings…. probably too many times this year.

      • Go Win

But the strategy seems to have changed. Why not using him in the high leverage situation in the 7th in this game? We would probably in the lead.

        • Tar

It’s a good question… my guess is he is worried about over using Dellin this year, and he needs Kelley down the stretch.

But really just looking at the situation it doesn’t make much sense. Hope it isn’t something up with DRob

          • forensic

my guess is he is worried about over using Dellin this year
Then he shouldn’t have tried to use him for 3 innings a few days ago.

  • UnKnown

Dellin took a peak at the radar again there

  • Hankflorida

I fear that we are entering the second coming of “The Horace Clarke Era.” I had twenty seven years of Yankee superiority before I endured the dissent into mediocrity, and many of you on this blog have almost twenty years of success with this team. History tends to repeat itself as nothing lasts forever.

  • forensic

    And now Robertson is warming.
I’m sorry, but it’s just inexcusable that they weren’t pitching in the 7h.

    • http://yankees.lhblogs.com/ Need Pitching & Hitting

And DRob still won’t pitch unless they score.

      So he probably won’t pitch.

  • UnKnown

Gift. Thank you. Now fucking score him.

  • http://yankees.lhblogs.com/ Need Pitching & Hitting

Speed at 2B to start the inning, with heart of the order coming up.

    • UnKnown

Nice call. Glad the count went to 2 strikes and they turned him loose.

      • Tar

That K is another reason to let Jete hit away. Not much confidence in the guys behind him.

    • yankeefeminista

Yep, I said the exact same thing.

  • Michael Pineddarda

They finally got that elusive W. Next stop the postseason.

  • stuart

wow. they scored 3 runs..greene has been great.. another good start, better infield defense and he would have given up 1 run probably…

  • Mick

The Capt gets the game winner now let’s start the run!

  • Kevin Wrong

I came up with formula to us winning. I talked to our pitchers and told them that you need to hold the opponent to two runs or less and then we can hide our pathetic offensive output and make a huge run….
