Phelps throws for first time since elbow injury, could return in 3 weeks

8/19-8/21 Series Preview: Houston Astros
Game 123: Opposites

For the first time since being placed on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation two weeks ago, David Phelps played catch today yesterday. He made 50 throws from 60 feet and told reporters he had an MRI yesterday. The results will be available at some point today. Joe Girardi told reporters that Phelps is likely three weeks away from returning to the team if the tests come back clean (as expected), though they might bring him back as a reliever just to speed things up.

Really slicing it thin there with contributing to the big league playoff push…

  • MikeNYC

i think alot depends on Capuano…if he is a disaster they may need Phelps back sooner to give Girardi options

  • Mick

If Tanaka and Phelps can come back I like our chances.

    • Preston

It’s mostly about Tanaka, the upgrade from Capuano to him is huge. If we get Phelps back would he even be a significant upgrade over Greene? The biggest impact would be that Greene could then strengthen the pen for the stretch run.

      • TB

The Report is Phelps will pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the season when he does return

        • Preston

Which will definitely help soak up some innings that have been going to some terrible up and down guys, but it isn’t going to make or break our playoff run the way a healthy Tanaka could.

          • Mick

Phelps out of the pen makes sense as Warren is a ?
At this point Tanaka, Pineda, Kuroda, Greene and McCarthy rate ahead of him.

For what its worth Buster Olney is reporting that multiple sources have informed him that Rusney Castillo will sign with the Chicago Cubs

    • Howler

not much considering you botched the entire quote.

      • TB

No I didn’t and they didn’t say how much – they just said it will be north of the puig’s 42 mill

        • Howler

Two folks involved in the Rusney Castillo bidding view the Cubs as the most likely team to land him. Just their educated guesses. That is the direct quote off his twitter feed…unless you’re getting other information from him elsewhere.

          • TB

Not his quote on espn – he said live his sources told him he is signing with the cubs

          • TB

Now in fairness we heard yesterday he was going to the redsox – the day before that he was going to the Phillies and about a week back the Yankees were favorites to land him…. Very typical reporting – they all jump the gun constantly without actually having proof

  • Hankflorida

Capuano or Phelps are not the dominant pitchers who can offset the offense, but I am so depending on McCarthy, Greene, Kuroda with Tanaka as a must to make October baseball. Pitching, speed and defense may not be the Yankee way but it is the only way that we can get there as”you have to dance with who you brung.”

    • TB

Cross your fingers hank — tough pitching matchup tonight too

  • Howler

I think the Sept call-ups will be more of a factor than Phelps will be by that point.

  • LIYankeeFan

I don’t think I care anymore. The new replacement starters have been good enough and the bullpen can use a long guy, with Warren being terrible recently.
