Sunday: On this date five years ago, the Yankees dropped Game Five of the 2009 World Series by the score of 8-6. A.J. Burnett got clobbered for six runs in only two innings on three days’ rest. Chase Utley hit two more homers, his fourth and fifth of the World Series. The Yankees actually rallied for four runs against Cliff Lee and Ryan Madson in the eighth and ninth innings to make things interesting, but the hole was simply too deep. The Yankees still led the series three games to two after the loss. Here’s the box score.
Here’s your open thread for the last few hours of the weekend. The Knicks are playing and Ravens-Steelers is the late NFL game. You know what to do by now, so have at it.
Quiz!: The 2014 Yankees roster Sporcle quiz is out. It’s a good way to drive yourself nuts for ten minutes. I got 53 out of 58 and didn’t miss anyone obvious.
Saturday: Five years ago today, the Yankees rallied in the ninth to take Game Four of the 2009 World Series from the Phillies. CC Sabathia held the Fightin’s to three runs in 6.2 innings on three days’ rest, though the Phillies tied it 4-4 on Pedro Feliz’s eighth inning homer against Joba Chamberlain. The Yankees retook the lead in the top of the ninth thanks to Johnny Damon’s double steal and Alex Rodriguez’s double into the corner. You remember that. I know you do. Jorge Posada singled home two insurance runs and Mariano Rivera closed out the 7-4 win. Here’s the box score.
This is your open thread for the night. There’s college football on, plus the Nets and all three local hockey teams are in action. The Arizona Fall League Fall Star Game will also be on MLB Network at 8pm ET. Both OF Aaron Judge and 1B Greg Bird (injury replacement) are playing. Talk about those games, Game Four in 2009, or anything else right here.
Friday: On this date five years ago, the Yankees came back to beat the Phillies 8-5 in Game Three of the 2009 World Series after an 80-minute rain delay, giving New York a two games to one series lead. Philadelphia scored three runs in the second thanks in part to a Jayson Werth homer, but the Bombers rallied to tie on an Alex Rodriguez two-run homer — it hit off a camera in right and had to be reviewed — and Andy Pettitte’s run-scoring single against Cole Hamels. Johnny Damon doubled in two, Werth hit another homer off Pettitte, and Nick Swisher and pinch-hitter Hideki Matsui plated insurance runs with solo homers. Mariano Rivera got the final two outs for the save. Here’s the box score.
I don’t have many decent links for this weekend, plus I don’t want to interrupt our little 2009 World Series recap, so I’m going to cut straight to the open thread part now. The links will be back next Friday, I promise. None of the local hockey and basketball teams are playing tonight, but it is Friday, so it’s a good night to get out of the house and unwind. Talk about whatever here.
