Tuesday: Torrens was diagnosed with a torn right labrum and will have surgery tomorrow, the Yankees announced. He will miss the entire 2015 season. Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York will perform the surgery. Bummer.

Monday: Luis Torrens‘ shoulder is acting up again. George King reported late last week that the young backstop was heading for tests on his right shoulder, and today assistant GM Billy Eppler told Chad Jennings the team is still gathering information and will know more in the next 24 hours. Earlier today reports were floating around that Torrens needs surgery and will miss the season, but the Yankees aren’t ready to commit to that yet.

Torrens, 18, missed two months last season with a right shoulder strain. He returned from the injury in mid-June and hit .270/.327/.405 (115 wRC+) with two homers in 48 games for Short Season Staten Island as one of the youngest players in the NY-Penn League, so if the shoulder was still bothering him, it didn’t show in his performance at the plate.

In 109 games across two minor league seasons, Torrens has thrown out 50 of 122 attempted base-stealers (41%), which is excellent. Especially considering he did not become a full-time catcher until the Yankees signed him out of Venezuela for $1.3M during the 2012-13 international signing period. Hopefully the injury does not compromise his arm behind the plate, because it is a weapon.

I ranked Torrens as New York’s sixth best prospect two weeks ago because he’s taken to the catcher position extremely well and shows offensive promise. Losing an entire season at age 18 (he turns 19 in May) or even just a chunk of it would be pretty serious though. He’s at a crucial stage in his development. Yeah, Torrens is still very young and will have time to recover, but this is crummy news. No other way to put it.

and here comes the injuries… Ugh!

  • Mustang and The 2015 Upsiders

    Prospects…..smh

  • Farewell Mo and Jeet

What are the odds that the first injury to a prospect wasn’t Heathcott?

    • Havok9120

Someone somewhere probably lost some money on this.

      • Moncada’s Codpiece

        This makes me happy.

  • tomingeorgia

What I don’t get is the morbid attention to “unavoidable injuries”. I’ve had some of the most dangerous jobs in the world, from wartime airborne and infantry man to fisherman to farmer (look it up). With any luck at all, we’ll be fine.

    • Game 3

      Are you Tom Skerritt?

        Who is that?

      Nonsense. We’re clearly doomed.

Cue the Tanaka elbow comments in 3… 2…1…

    • Farewell Mo and Jeet

Which thread do you think will have more comments, the first Moncada to Boston or the Tanaka needs TJS?

      • blake

What about the Tanaka is fine thread?

        • Farewell Mo and Jeet

Not even close to the other 2 threads

          • blake

No shock value ….what about the Arod joins Dancing with the Stars thread?

            • Farewell Mo and Jeet

I haven’t watched that show since Emmitt Smith won but for Arod, I might tune in. Has anyone every been disqualified from that show for PEDs?

              • blake

I hope he does it one day….would be epic

                • Farewell Mo and Jeet

He could sleep with all the female dancers, contestants and that judge and cause a huge brawl on national TV.

                  • blake

Of course…..I wouldn’t have it any other way

                • Jorge Steinbrenner

There is no truth to the rumor that Hal Steinbrenner is trying to convince CC Sabathia to go on the show, with the insurance company on hold.

                  • blake

                    Break a leg CC….or knee

                  • Farewell Mo and Jeet

Hal would probably prefer Arod and CC go on that MMA reality show instead.

      • gageagainstthemachine

That implies both happen. Jury is still out on one. With that said…Tanaka. Because we already have the huge contract and seen what he’s legitimately capable of in MLB. Even if Moncada turns into something, I think that possible TJS thread would be entertaining. I’m calling in sick that day if it happens :)

        • Farewell Mo and Jeet

I’m speaking hypothetically, not from some vision of the future like BigDan.

          • gageagainstthemachine

He’ll remind you in a few months you were wrong and he said it all along even though he never actually did.

    • Moncada’s Codpiece

There’s only so many players I can follow while carrying a knife for emergency impromptu surgery. I’m currently aiming my switchblade at Tanaka’s elbow, so someone else will have to be ready to jam one into Torrens’s shoulder.

  • RetroRob

That sucks. He did not hit as well after his return. Not sure if it’s related.

    • Scranton Caddy Shacks 15

Huh? He was at a lower level, but hit better at that level (115 wRC+) after returning than he was hitting in Charleston (93 wRC+) before going down…

  • Austinmac

That’s too bad. Let’s hope he recovers.

  • Looser Trader FotD™

Fire the trainer! Overhaul the minor league system!

    Or something like that.

    • Farewell Mo and Jeet

Hal must be pissed. $1.3 million in jeopardy of being wasted. Cashman and companies heads just moved a little closer to the chopping block.

      • Looser Trader FotD™

I don’t know about that. Unfortunately though it probably makes Hal feel better about not stepping up for Moncada.

        • Scranton Caddy Shacks 15

Hard to imagine that one prospect having one injury really crosses Hal’s radar at all.

          • Looser Trader FotD™

            Not so sure. Given:
-he’s one of their top prospects
            -it’s apparently a serious injury
…I’d think that pings his radar.

            • Scranton Caddy Shacks 15

He’s one of their more promising prospects, but probably at 4+ years away and the severity of the injury is unknown as is its expected impact on his career. A lot of fans seem to be thinking his prospects are severally diminished by this injury, but we really don’t know either how much time he’ll miss or the long-term impacts of the injury and time missed. Byron Buxton missed time and struggled when he did play in 2014, and no one really thinks his prospects as an MLB player took much of any hit.

I’d imagine Hal knows it happened, so in a very loose sense it may be on his radar. I also doubt he’s doing much of any thinking about it.

      • Scranton Caddy Shacks 15

Yes, because this is the Yankees first bonus baby to bust and all… They’ve had high 7 figure guys barely even make it to the U.S. I think Tamarez was sent back to the DSL after his U.S. debut season.

  • Dalek Jeter

That sorta sucks, I thought Torrens and Mateo were both in positions to maybe jump into the top 100 prospect conversation within the next two years. He’s still super young though, there’s no good time to miss a year of development, but 19 is better than 22 or 23.

    • Moncada’s Codpiece

This. Looks like he’ll not be far behind, if any, should he have to sit out this year. But was really looking forward to this burrito.

    • cashmoney

I can’t get too upset about a 19 year old destined for riverdogs. 2 shoulder surgeries for a catcher is never good news.

      • Scranton Caddy Shacks 15

        I don’t think he’s had any shoulder surgeries yet…

  • Sent to the principles office

sucks anyways, I hope Sanchez gets a shot

  • Wave Your Hat

Let’s hope it’s a minor shoulder issue and nothing worse.

  • Patrick

    Thanks Cashman.

At least he didn’t cost $63 million to sign…

  • NYCORNERSTONE

Here we go with the injuries

  • http://batman-news.com nyyankfan7

Well Cashman failed, kid should have been traded for Stanton and Yelich 8 months ago.

  • nylsjd

Sucks to hear. Cue the “This is why you trade your prospects” even if it really has no relevance to a guy at his level.

  • Dos Luises

    What a drag.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner
    • Rick

      You would

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

Actually, if I could take that back and regain some cred, here’s a cover of the same song that will absolutely bring a smile to your face. Seriously. Saw them do this live as well.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jLASjlcva0

    • cashmoney

This is like the most upper lifting song I heard today.

  • Rick

Was gonna save this for the open thread, but there’s a nice little fangraphs article on Eovaldi up right now. Brian McCann … wait that’s not right. #ProspectHeartbreak

    • blake

Haven’t read it yet but Cameron loves that trade for the Yanks….think Eovaldi could take next step

      • Rick

Apparently he has a third pitch, I won’t spoil, that he’s been working after throwing it in a very very sample towards the end of last year that has a chance to be very good

    • Y’s Guy

open thread ready and waiting for you

  • ChuckIt

McCann seems to think Eovaldi is ready to break out, but to me this is all like a weather report, seeing is believing.

  • ChuckIt

bad news for the kid, but the upside is he is still just a kid.

  • Moncada’s Codpiece

And all the injury porn addicts following the Yankees are proclaiming their triumph tonight.
Hope all works out. On the plus side, he will only be going to age 20 next year.

  • RetroRob

It sucks, but he’s young and he’s not a pitcher. Always a risk that he might lost a little pop on his throws, but minimal compared to a pitcher. He’s also years away regardless. Hopefully the surgery goes well and we see him in 2019 instead of 2018.

  • Rick

He’s in good hands with Altchek.

    • MTU

Good thing you didn’t say Allstate.

      • Havok9120

That joke really should have been made by someone.

  • The Shanesaw

    Well.

  • Game 3

That sucks. Sorry to hear it.

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

GET TEH SURGU…oh, I guess he is.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Poor kid. Time to show some resilience.

  • El Duque

    Geez Luis.

    • Havok9120

      ietc

  • MTU

    Bummer.

  • Fernandito Andujar

Sucks, he was showing a real strong throwing arm and nice progress. More so considering his young age, the fact he was among the youngest players in the NY Penn League and the fact he hasn’t been a catcher for long. Hope he is able to come back next year and still show the same promise/progress.

  • Dos Luises

    what a drag!!

  • http://riveraveblues.com/ Mick

how far can we go with the torrens pity party, time for the open thread.

  • Deadrody

Weird. I had surgery on my right shoulder for a torn labrum and then twice later for a minor torn rotator cuff on each shoulder. The labrum was by far the lesser of the 3 and it really isn’t something that would put you out of commission for 6 months. I’m sure they’re being as cautious as possible, but I would suspect he’ll be back before the end of the season.
