- The Yankees opened the week with four games in Tampa. They hit five home runs en route to an 11-5 win in the opener, but couldn’t hold a lead in Tuesday’s 4-2 loss. The Yankees wasted another good pitching performance in Wednesday’s 3-2 loss, then the offense never got going in the 6-1 series-ending loss.
- Three games in Kansas City followed and the Royals blew the Yankees out 12-1 in the series opener. CC Sabathia and Chase Headley helped New York to a 5-1 win Saturday, but the Yankees were shut out for the first time this season in Sunday’s 6-0 loss.
- Injury Updates: Masahiro Tanaka (wrist, forearm) has been throwing bullpen sessions and could pitch in a minor league game later this week. Chase Whitley (elbow) was placed on the 15-day DL with a sprain and is likely facing Tommy John surgery. Ivan Nova (elbow) is pitching in Extended Spring Training games. Brendan Ryan (calf, hamstring) has resumed playing minor league games. Greg Bird (shoulder) will miss several weeks with a strain. Ian Clarkin (elbow) has resumed pitching in Extended Spring Training. Brady Lail (head) was hit by a line drive but as since returned to action. Luis Severino (blister) will return soon.
- Both Jose Ramirez and Bryan Mitchell spent some time with the MLB team this week following Whitley’s injury. Jared Burton was released from Triple-A.
- Alex Rodriguez will be a DH exclusively going forward with Stephen Drew stepping in as the backup third baseman.
- The Yankees do not have interest in Troy Tulowitzki, who won’t request a trade from the Rockies anyway.
