According to Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees will sign right-hander Sergio Santos to a minor league contract. He’s heading to Double-A Trenton. Santos was up with the Dodgers earlier this year but elected free agency after being dropped from the 40-man roster. Fun fact: He struck out four batters in an inning not once, but twice this year.

Santos, 31, was really good with the White Sox from 2010-11 (3.29 ERA and 2.97 FIP in 115 innings), but he struggled from 2012-14 after getting traded to the Blue Jays (5.23 ERA and 4.00 FIP in 51.2 innings). Santos allowed seven runs in 13.1 innings with Los Angeles earlier this year, with 15 strikeouts and seven walks. He’s a classic low-to-mid-90s fastball/mid-80s slider guy.

Late last week Brian Cashman said the Yankees want to add a right-handed reliever — “I do need to find a right-handed arm for the bullpen here at some point,” said the GM — to their five-lefty bullpen. Santos may or may not be the answer. Probably not. A minor league contract is no risk — he’s not even in Triple-A! — and he’s worth the look though. But still, I encourage you to go forth with outrage.

Sure. Why not? Keep him around long enough and he’d help as a warm body in September.

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

Why warm? Cold not good enough?

  • dickylarue

Wait, I thought Bryan Mitchell could easily replace any RHP on the Yankees and frankly in the game of baseball.

    I’m outraged.

I think inappropriate outrage and faux inappropriate outrage are essentially even in terms of being tired and past their expiration date.

Pretty sobering they’ve become so dominant among sports forums you can’t have a single thread without one, the other, or both.

Earnest and reasoned discourse? What’s that?

    • D$

If not for the fun, then for what is it, that you watch sports?

    • BigDavey88

I’m usually with you when it comes to managing the ebb and flow of a season and not over reacting, but…

What grand discourse is there to be had for the minor league signing of a player that hasn’t been good for a few years and has been assigned to AA?

For the sake of intellectual conversation, let us run down the gamut of fine discussion that could be had:

      – The chances of a journeyman relief pitcher making the team
      – The chances of a journeyman relief pitcher not making the team
      – The chances of a journeyman relief pitcher sucking in the minors
      – The chances of a journeyman relief pitcher proving himself capable of getting outs in the minors, thus, earning a promotion to MLB.
      – The chances of a journeyman relief pitcher getting promoted to the MLB and continuing his recent and lengthy trend of sucking.
      – The chances of a journeyman relief pitcher finding his groove and bringing us the veteran presents we all know and love.
      – The chances of a journeyman relief pitcher getting injured and not hearing from him for the rest of the season.

I’m sure I missed some elaborate theorems and the nuanced stratagem of Brian Cashman, but that about covers it. So, my highly intelligible good sir m’lady, what would you propose we discuss on this highly controversial matter?

See, perhaps the readers of this blog know all to well the routine moves of a baseball season, the acquisition of depth, the reclamation projects, etc., that Earnest and Reasoned Discourse on such a move is not necessary. Was it not you, this morning, that was complaining about people rehashing the same old story lines, over-reacting to the same baseball tropes year in and year out? How does this move, the signing of 31-year-old Sergio Santos, that of his 5.12 ERA and 4.6 BB/9 over the last four seasons combined, not qualify as the same, tired, re-tread of baseball talk?

I wonder what kind of shape he is in? Would you say it’s the best of his life? I’m pretending to eagerly await your advanced reply.

  • Fernandito Andujar

Minor league deal is well no big deal. Don’t see how he is better option than Carpenter, but costs nothing. Still would like to see someone else like Rumbelow, Burawa, Pinder or Ramirez.

  • HoopDreams

He’s blocking James Kaprielian. Give the kid a chance.

  • Centaur Hips

Can’t hurt since it’s a not a MLB deal. Edited: (wrong thread)

    • Sir Didihiro Nakamura

      Don’t we all? ????

  • Hankflorida

The shuttle bus from the farm will need all the arms that it could gather as Girardi will have to become Captain Hook in order to remain competitive, and R&R will be SOP for the tired and weary pen.

  • D$

Sign someone, or call someone up. Either gotta fill a roster spot in the bigs or minors.

  • D$

I refuse to be upset until i see what number they assign him if he enters the majors. Then we’ll commence serious rage.

    • The Great Gonzo

      21… /troll

  • Vern Sneaker

I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more!!!

  • Betances2Miller

I’ll be surprised if he ever pitches in a Yankees uniform.

    • The Great Gonzo

Could be demoted to Tampa. Technically a Yankee uniform…

  • The Great Gonzo

I hope he gets the call. And I hope he pitches a game. And I hope none of you remember him in the Sporkle quiz come October.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      Joel De La Cruz!

  • Vern Sneaker

Next thing you know we’ll lose Eli Grba in the expansion draft!

  • Aldukes

    yawn

  • Yon Pildysh

If he doesn’t do the un-tuck maybe he can un-tie his shoe at the end of the game ??

  • Aldukes

I just don’t see how they could just designate Carpenter for assignment and then say they need to an add an RH’ed arm

    • http://riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

They need a RHRP who actually gets outs. That better?

      • Aldukes

        That’ll do it! Thanks

      • Aldukes

Just thought it was too small of a sample size. Beltran didn’t hit for a month and a half.. So did we need a RF that gets hits and makes plays in the field at the time? Carpenter wasn’t pitching well, no doubt about it but I still liked his stuff and thought he could have turned it around.

  • vicki

    santos is serviceable.

    • Preston

Probably not. But he was very good recently, and seemingly healthy now. So on a minor league deal it’s definitely worth a shot.

      • Farewell Mo and Jeet

Yeah, he’s been pretty shitty for a few years ever since the Jays brought him in from Chicago to be their closer. Nothing to lose on a minor league deal though and he does seem to have a live arm.

  • Bertin Lefkovic

    What happened to Chris Martin?

  • Rick Myles

Another Esmile Rogers. Which one is worse? Another Cashman gem of a move. He always values other teams’ trash.

    • Posada_20

It’s a minor league deal. How does it hurt? Geez!!!

  • Chip

I love the indignation over a minor league deal. It warms my heart to see what idiots some of you are.

    • RetroRob

      I’ve given up being surprised.

  • RetroRob

    Nice depth move.
