Game 113: If Greg Bird Can't Save Them, No One Can
Yankees stop skid in Greg Bird's debut with an 8-6 win over Indians

Remember when RHP James Kaprielian was supposed to make his pro debut yesterday but didn’t? Turns out he did! The Rookie GCL Yanks2 box score was screwed up because it was a suspended game, but it was corrected today. Kaprielian’s line was … not good: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 1 WP, 1/1 GB/FB. Bust! Or he was rusty because it was his first time pitching in a real game since UCLA’s season ended June 1st. Choose your own narrative.

Triple-A Scranton (3-2 win over Pawtucket)

  • LF Ben Gamel: 2-4, 2 R, 1 K
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 2-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP — got picked off first … had reached base four times total in his previous four games
  • 3B Jose Pirela: 1-4, 1 RBI — drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth
  • DH Gary Sanchez: 1-4, 1 2B
  • RF Aaron Judge: 1-2, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB — 8-for-20 (.400) during his six-game hitting streak
  • CF Slade Heathcott: 0-3, 1 K
  • C Austin Romine: 0-3
  • RHP Joel De La Cruz: 3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 5/0 GB/FB — 39 of 66 pitches were strikes (59%)
  • LHP Eric Wooten: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 8/4 GB/FB — 44 of 68 pitches were strikes (65%) … here to help out the bullpen since half the team has been on the MLB/Triple-A shuttle of late
  • LHP James Pazos: 0.1 IP, zeroes, 1 K — five pitches, three strikes

Double-A Trenton (6-5 loss to New Britain, walk-off style)

  • DH Jake Cave: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • SS Tyler Wade: 0-4, 1 K
  • RF Tyler Austin: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K — threw two runners out at third base … has hits in five of six games since being demoted
  • CF Mark Payton: 3-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI
  • RHP Rookie Davis: 5.1 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 5/5 GB/FB — 63 of 94 pitches were strikes (67%) … Double-A: not as easy as High-A

High-A Tampa (6-4 loss to Clearwater)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 2-5, 2 K, 1 SB
  • DH Abi Avelino: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — got picked off first … four straight two-hit games
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-5, 1 R, 1 K, 2 SB, 2 E (both fielding)
  • LHP Dietrich Enns: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 9/2 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston (12-10 win over Lexington)

  • SS Vince Conde: 4-5, 2 R, 3 2B, 5 RBI, 1 BB — heck of a day for last year’s ninth rounder
  • RF Austin Aune: 0-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Matt Wotherspoon: 3.2 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 4/1 GB/FB – 50 of 67 pitches were strikes (75%) … too many strikes? can’t be over the plate with every pitch

Short Season Staten Island (7-3 loss to Williamsport)

  • SS Kyle Holder: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HBP — he’s been on base 75 times in 43 games
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K — left the game after striking out in the sixth for an unknown reason
  • DH Brandon Wagner: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Derek Callahan: 4 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 4/1 GB/FB — 58 of 87 pitches were strikes (67%)

Rookie level Pulaski (10-6 win over Greeneville)

  • CF Carlos Vidal: 1-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB, 1 HBP
  • SS Hyo-Jun Park: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • LF Nathan Mikolas: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K — still mashing down here
  • RHP Drew Finley: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 0/3 GB/FB, 1 E (fielding) — not a great start but this year’s third rounder seems to be settling in a bit
  • RHP Simon De La Rosa: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, 1 WP, 1/1 GB/FB — 51/27 K/BB in 40.2 innings for the 22-year-old, who has one of the better arms in the system

Rookie level GCL Yanks1 Game One (6-4 loss to GCL Blue Jays in seven innings) makeup of the July 28th rainout

  • CF Cesar Diaz: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 CS
  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (throwing) — seven errors in 22 games at short for the 17-year-old
  • LF Trey Amburgey: 4-4, 2 R, 1 2B — 14-for-27 (.519) during his six-game hitting streak
  • 3B Donny Sands: 1-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K — 19-year-old was this year’s eighth rounder and he’s 28-for-90 (.311) with 17 walks and ten strikeouts in his last 26 games
  • RHP Anyelo Gomez: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 0/2 GB/FB

Rookie level GCL Yanks1 Game Two was suspended due to rain in the middle of the second inning. They only have one series left this season with the GCL Blue Jays (August 26-17th), so I assume that’s when they’ll complete the game. Here’s the box score.

Rookie level GCL Yanks2 (3-2 loss to GCL Astros in five innings) the game was completed early due to rain

  • SS Yonauris Rodriguez: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B
  • 3B Dermis Garcia: 0-2 — went 2-for-3 in his first game and is 1-for-15 (.067) since
  • DH Isiah Gilliam: 1-2, 1 K
  • RHP Daris Vargas: 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 2 WP, 9/4 GB/FB
