Yankees drop their sixth straight and get swept by the A's with a 4-3 loss

As expected, SS Gleyber Torres was placed on the Triple-A Scranton disabled list today, the team announced. He hyper-extended his elbow on a play at the plate yesterday. X-rays came back negative, so that’s good, though Torres will have more tests tomorrow.

Triple-A Scranton (2-0 win over Buffalo in seven innings) completed early due to rain

  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-4, 1 E (throwing) — hitting streak is up to 18 games
  • LF Dustin Fowler & DH Clint Frazier: both 0-3 — Fowler scored a run
  • 1B Tyler Austin: 0-2, 1 RBI
  • CF Jake Cave: 2-3, 1 2B
  • LHP Caleb Smith: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 7/6 GB/FB — 58 of 84 pitches were strikes (69%)

Double-A Trenton Game One (6-0 win over Erie) they roughed up Tigers RHP Beau Burrows, the 22nd pick in the 2015 draft

  • SS Thairo Estrada: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • CF Rashad Crawford & 3B Miguel Andujar: both 1-3, 1 RBI — Crawford scored a run
  • RF Billy McKinney: 0-3, 1 K
  • 2B Abi Avelino: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI
  • LHP Justus Sheffield: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 8/8 GB/FB — 62 of 97 pitches were strikes … he’s cut his walk rate down to 7.7% on the season, so that’s good

Double-A Trenton Game Two (4-2 win over Erie in seven innings) makeup of their May 6th rainout

  • SS Thairo Estrada: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K — it’s always a good day to play two during the Summer of Thairo
  • RF Billy McKinney: 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI — 10-for-26 (.385) with three doubles and three homers in his last eight games
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B — now hitting .416/.455/.634 with a 12.7% strikeout rate in his last 26 games
  • 2B Abi Avelino: 0-3, 1 RBI
  • LHP Daniel Camarena: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 7/2 GB/FB — 35 of 46 pitches were strikes (76%) … he’d been out since May 13th with a shoulder issue … my guess is he’ll head back to Scranton next because they need a starter right now … the Yankees probably had him start here because of the doubleheader

High-A Tampa is off until tomorrow for the All-Star break.

Low-A Charleston (5-1 win over Columbia)

  • 2B Hoy Jun Park: 1-4, 1 R
  • SS Diego Castillo & 3B Angel Aguilar: both 2-4, 1 R — Castillo committed a fielding … Aguilar doubled
  • CF Blake Rutherford: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K — only one homer so far, but that’s his 15th double in 51 games … soon enough they’ll start carrying over the fence
  • LF Estevan Florial & RF Isiah Gilliam: both 1-4, 1 RBI —  Florial struck out twice … Gilliam doubled and struck out once
  • C Donny Sands: 1-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
  • RHP Nick Green: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 9/3 GB/FB — 51 of 83 pitches were strikes (61%) … he’s allowed nine earned runs in his nine starts and 48 innings, and four of those nine earned runs came in one start
  • RHP Matt Frawley: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 27 of 35 pitches were strikes (77%) … 40/4 K/BB in 37.1 innings this season … the Yankees got him from the Pirates a few days ago to complete the Johnny Barbato trade

The short season leagues are coming! Short Season Staten Island begins play tomorrow and Rookie Pulaski starts their season Thursday. The two Rookie GCL Yanks teams open their seasons one week from tomorrow.
