DotF: Trenton throws combined no-hitter in postseason win

Game 140: Gain More Ground
Yankees waste away an early lead, drop the series opener to the Rangers 11-5

A few quick notes to pass along:

  • Now that High-A Tampa’s season is over, OF Estevan Florial and SS Kyle Holder have joined Double-A Trenton, reports Kyle Franko. Both are working out with the team but are not on the active roster. They could be added if there’s an injury.
  • RHP Clarke Schmidt has resumed throwing following Tommy John surgery, according to his Twitter feed. The Yankees’ first round pick in this year’s draft had his elbow rebuilt in early May. He’s been throwing for two weeks now, so it seems his rehab is going well.
  • Baseball America released their end-of-season minor league All-Star Teams and two Yankees farmhands made it. RHP Chance Adams is on the First Team and Florial is on the Second Team.

Triple-A Scranton (4-2 win over Lehigh Valley) the best-of-five first round postseason series is now tied at one

  • CF Mason Williams: 2-4, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 SB — 3-for-8 with two walks in the two games so far
  • LF Billy McKinney: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 3-5, 2 2B, 1 RBI — here’s video of the first double
  • 1B Mike Ford: 1-5, 1 RBI
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K — back here after crushing the ball in a few rehab games at the lower levels
  • RF Jake Cave: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Chance Adams: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 2/5 GB/FB — 61 of 102 pitches were strikes (60%) … bit of a grind, but he got through five with a lead
  • RHP Nick Rumbelow: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 22 of 35 pitches were strikes (63%) … bullpen got pretty taxed in extra innings yesterday, so he came up pretty big in a close game today

Double-A Trenton (2-0 win over Binghamton) cycle last night, no-hitter tonight … been an interesting series so far … Trenton leads the best-of-five first round postseason series two games to one

  • CF Jeff Hendrix: 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB
  • SS Thairo Estrada: 0-3
  • RF Clint Frazier: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K — played all nine innings in his third rehab game, as scheduled … I wonder if he’ll be activated when the Yankees return to New York on Monday
  • DH Garrett Cooper: 1-4, 1 2B, 2 K — still rehabbing the hamstring, apparently
  • 2B Nick Solak: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 E (fielding)
  • LHP Justus Sheffield: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 6/2 GB/FB — 37 of 62 pitches were strikes (60%) … he’s still on a limited pitch count as he works his way back from the oblique issue … he did allow a hit in the second inning, though it was later changed to an error, so there’s the no-hitter
  • RHP Taylor Widener: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 48 of 72 pitches were strikes (67%) … not a bad Double-A debut, huh? going 16 up, 15 down to close out a no-hitter in the postseason (an error was committed behind him, hence the one baserunner)

High-A Tampa‘s season is over. They lost to Dunedin (Blue Jays) in their first round postseason series.

Low-A Charleston (2-1 win over Greenville) their best-of-three first round postseason series is tied at a game apiece

  • SS Diego Castillo: 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS, 1 E (fielding)
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RF Isiah Gilliam & DH Dermis Garcia: both 1-4, 2 K
  • 2B Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-4
  • RHP Rony Garcia: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 HBP, 8/0 GB/FB, 1 E (missed catch) — 56 of 92 pitches were strikes (61%) … great outing for the 19-year-old

Short Season Staten Island‘s regular season is over. Their best-of-three first round postseason series with Hudson Valley (Rays) begins tomorrow.

Rookie Pulaski (8-7 loss to Elizabethton) they were swept in the best-of-three Championship Series two games to none, so their season is over

  • CF Frederick Cuevas: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
  • SS Jesus Bastidas: 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K — hits his first homer of the season in the final game of the season
  • 1B Eric Wagaman: 2-5, 1 , 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K — went 7-for-19 (.368) with two homers in their five postseason games
  • RHP Luis Medina: 3 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 2/3 GB/FB — his first postseason start was excellent … the second one not so much
  • RHP Garrett Whitlock: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 1/1 GB/FB — this year’s 17th round pick finishes with 26 strikeouts and no walks in 18.1 innings

Rookie GCL Yanks East‘s season is over. They beat the GCL Nationals and won the Championship Series.

Rookie GCL Yanks West‘s season is over. They did not qualify for the postseason.
