Game 34: Or maybe not (+ chat!)
It may or may not rain heavily in Detroit, and that’s both good and bad for the Yankees. It’s good because they can use the extra day off to rest up their injured players as well as avoid giving Sergio Mitre another start, but it’s bad because they aren’t scheduled to make another trip to Detroit this season. To make this one up, they’d have to return to MoTown on a mutual off day (June 7th and Sept. 16th appear to be the only realistic options for a makeup date), which is something neither team wants to do, or they’d have to wait until the end of the season and make it up only if impacts the final standings. That doesn’t happen very often and the league hates doing it, so expect them to lose a future off day if they can’t get the game in today.
Here’s the lineup that’ll face Justin Verlander…
Jeter, SS
Gardner, CF
Teixeira, DH
A-Rod, 3B
Cano, 2B
Posada, C
Miranda, 1B
Winn, LF
Golson, RF
And on the mound, Carsten Charles Sabathia.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET, and if they do start this one up, you can see it on YES locally or MLB Network nationally. Also, today is our weekly game chat, so join in at 1pm after the jump.
Game 27: For the sweep (+ chat!)
Two games into the series, the Yankees have two wins. It’s their eighth series win in nine tries, something only two other Yankee teams in history can claim (1928 & 1938). Yes, it’s been 71 years since the Yanks have won eighth of their first nine series. Cool stuff, huh?
On the mound to try for the sweep this afternoon is Andy Pettitte, who took a little bit of a beating at the hands of the White Sox last time out, but has been stellar overall. Mariano Rivera is available to close the door in the 9th if needed, but Joe Girardi indicated that he would like to play it safe and give him another day if at all possible. Joba Chamberlain is unavailable to close after working the last two nights. My guess is that if push comes to shove late, Al Aceves will work the 9th.
Here’s the lineup…
Jeter, SS
Johnson, DH
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Cano, 2B
Swisher, RF
Gardner, CF
Cervelli, C
Winn, LF
And on the mound, Andrew Eugene Pettitte.
Get away day for the Orioles, who have to be in Minnesota for a series starting tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET and can be seen on YES. I’m holding our weekly game chat today, so join in when the party starts at 1pm. Enjoy the game, chat’s after the jump.

Game 15: Tough act to follow (+ chat!)
It would be tough for anyone to top Phil Hughes’ masterful performance from last night, but if there’s one guy on the Yankees’ staff can do it, it’s CC Sabathia. I’m sure the A’s must love having to go out and face this guy after getting nearly no-hit less than 24 hours ago. The vast majority of Oakland’s hitters are lefthanded (Ryan Sweeney, Eric Chavez, Daric Barton, Travis Buck, Gabe Gross), so hopefully CC holds it down, because Joe Girardi said both Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera are unavailable of heavy workloads of late.
Going to the A’s is lefty Dallas Braden, who sports one of the best changeups you’ll ever see. You can see it in action here, it looks like it stops in mid-air. He doesn’t throw hard at all, but that change is the equalizer. Here’s the lineup Braden will have to deal with…
Jeter, SS
Johnson, 1B
Teixeira, DH
A-Rod, 3B
Cano, 2B
Swisher, RF
Thames, LF
Cervelli, C
Gardner, CF
And on the mound, the hometown kid, CC Sabathia.
Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that Matt Carson is in the lineup for Oaktown. He spent six years as a organizational soldier in the Yanks’ system after being drafted in the 5th round of the 2002 draft, and joined the A’s as a minor league free agent last year. He received my 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award. Great to see him in the show.
It’s a get-away day, so first pitch is scheduled for 3:35pm ET and can be seen on YES. We’re also having our weekly game chat today, so make sure you come back around 3:30ish and join the chat after the jump.
