Pineda set to throw bullpen session
Posted by: | CommentsVia George King, right-hander Michael Pineda will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. It appears that it will be his first time on a mound since being placed on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis. Pineda threw a bunch of long toss last week and has been throwing off flat ground for a while. Joe Girardi recently said that he doesn’t expect him back this month.
In other news, King reports that Andy Pettitte will pitch for High-A Tampa tomorrow, his second minor league appearance. He threw three innings and 32 pitches for Tampa on Monday, so he got an extra day of rest between starts.
Yanks place Manny Banuelos on Triple-A disabled list
Posted by: | CommentsThe Yankees have placed top prospect Manny Banuelos on Triple-A disabled list with a sore back. Brian Cashman told George King that the left-hander is expected to miss one start with a lat issue, so at least it’s not a disc. Banuelos, 21, walked six in two innings last night and was underwhelming in his previous start, so hopefully this back issue explains it and he can move on.
Rafael Soriano tore nail warming up, may or may not have been available
Posted by: | CommentsVia Mark Feinsand and Bryan Hoch, Rafael Soriano tore a fingernail while warming up in the seventh inning of tonight’s game, and depending on who you ask, he either was or was not available to pitch in the later innings. If the nail is torn bad enough, it could require a DL stint. Hopefully that’s not that case for Soriano, because the Yankees could use a fresh arm for tomorrow.
Pineda scheduled for long toss this week
Posted by: | CommentsVia George King, right-hander Michael Pineda will remain in Tampa and not travel with the team to Baltimore as he works his way back from shoulder tendinitis. He will throw long-toss today, tomorrow, and Tuesday after playing catch on Thursday and Friday. If that goes well, there’s a chance he could get back on the mound and throw a bullpen session reasonable soon. He’ll need a few of those before throwing in a minor league game, I imagine.
Pitching Updates: Pineda, Pettitte, Aardsma
Posted by: | CommentsGot a few quick updates on some injured and returning hurlers…
- Michael Pineda played catch yesterday for the first time since being diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis last week, and the good news is that he played catch again today. Joe Girardi said it’s “safe to say” he won’t be back in the bigs this month, however. [Erik Boland & Bryan Hoch]
- Andy Pettitte is not injured, and in fact it’s quite the opposite. He threw 45 pitches in a bullpen session today and is still on track to throw two innings in a minor league game on Monday. [Boland]
- David Aardsma threw a bullpen session today, his first since having Tommy John surgery last July. It doesn’t sound like much, but it is a significant step in the rehab process. [Aardsma]
Pineda played catch today, reported no problems with shoulder
Posted by: | CommentsVia Joel Sherman, right-hander Michael Pineda played catch for about eight minutes off flat ground today and reported no problems with his shoulder. He also worked on his delivery in the bullpen without actually throwing a ball.
Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said he and Pineda worked on staying more in line with the plate rather than getting around the ball today, which he was doing both in camp this year and at times with the Mariners last season. That caused the cut we saw on his fastball and sapped some velocity. I’m not sure what the next step will be, but it’s obviously good news that he was able to throw without discomfort so soon after being diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis.
Update: MRI negative on Logan’s back
Posted by: | CommentsUpdate (2:11pm): Via Bryan Hoch and Carig, Brian Cashman said the MRI came back negative. It’s just back spasms and not a DL situation. Logan will be on the roster come Opening Day.
11:43am: Via Marc Carig, Logan is now headed for an MRI on his back. That can’t be good.
10:00am: Via Mark Feinsand, Boone Logan showed up to the ballpark with an achy back today and has been sent to the doctor. There’s no word on the extent the injury yet, but we’ll find out soon enough. Clay Rapada was a virtual lock for the roster anyway, but now there’s a chance he’ll end up the primary left-hander by default. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and the Yankees won’t have to dig up another reliever to start the season.
Update: Cesar Cabral has stress fracture in elbow
Posted by: | CommentsUpdate (1:33pm): Via Marc Carig and Mark Feinsand, Cabral has a stress fracture at the tip of his elbow. He underwent a battery of tests, but for now he’s in a splint with no treatment plan in place yet. Needless to say, he’s going to be out for a long time.
11:19am: Via Marc Carig and Erik Boland, Joe Girardi said left-hander Cesar Cabral has a “significant injury,” but doesn’t know the specifics yet. Cabral had his arm in a sling last night. That really bites. Clay Rapada will likely get the second lefty spot in the bullpen by default. If Cabral misses the entire year, the Rule 5 Draft rules will carry over to 2013.
Yankees place Pineda on DL with shoulder inflammation tendinitis

Update (12:59pm): Via Marc Carig, Brian Cashman said Pineda will be shut down for 10-15 days. That’s pretty much the only thing they can do. Cashman also said the MRI revealed no structural damage; Pineda’s labrum and rotator cuff are fine.
11:18am: Via Marc Carig and Dan Barbarisi, the Yankees are sending Michael Pineda to the 15-day DL with shoulder inflammation tendinitis. They’re obviously relieved that it isn’t anything more serious, and you should be too.
I don’t like that Pineda kept the soreness from the coaching staff and trainers, but I guess that’s what happens when you’re told you’re in a competition for a rotation spot. The Yankees plan to be very conservative according to David Waldstein, which isn’t surprising at all. Hopefully he heals up after some rest and comes out throwing darts sooner rather than later.
Cesar Cabral headed for tests on left arm
Posted by: | CommentsVia Bryan Hoch and Marc Carig, Cesar Cabral is headed for x-rays and an MRI on his left arm. He’s currently in a sling with elbow pain. Joe Girardi acknowledged that Cabral had a great chance to make the team, but the second lefty situation seems to have taken care of itself. Just FYI, he has to spend at least 90 days on the active (non-DL) roster this season, otherwise the Rule 5 Draft rules carry over into 2013.
