Denzel Washington knows his Yankees

With a glove slap to Sam Borden for the video link.

Open Thread: RAB Fantasy Football League Recap
Posted by: | Comments
Just as the NFL regular season came to an end last night, the 2009 edition of the RAB Fantasy Football League wrapped up as well. This year’s champ was sadly not me, but instead Greg Fertel of the great Pending Pinstripes. Greg beat out Right Field Porches (I’m sorry, I have no idea who you are, so identify yourself in the comments if you want credit) 110.14-94.62 in the finals. RAB regular Jamal G. finished in third place, and last year’s champ, the aptly named Tommie’s Champions, finished in sixth.
Greg had Chris Johnson, Ray Rice, and Tony Romo on his roster, all three of whom were among the league’s ten highest scoring players. Johnson had almost a 25 point advantage over Aaron Rodgers as the league’s most productive player, and nearly a 70 point edge over third place Adrian Peterson. I guess 2,006 rushing yards and an NFL record 2,509 yards from scrimmage will do that.
As for me, well I finished in 14th place out of 16 teams. That’s what happens when you have Chad Pennington as you’re starting QB in Week One, Terrell Owens as your number two WR, and Willie Parker on your roster period. By the time Jerome Harrison starting going nuts, it was too late. Only the presence of Maurice Jones-Drew made my team tolerable.
So congrats to Greg. His prize for winning: a pair of bleacher tickets to the Yankee game of his choosing during the upcoming season. Maybe next year I’ll win myself a pair of tickets from myself. If you’re curious, the final standings are after the jump.
Anyway, here’s your open thread for the night. There’s no MNF (boo), but the Rangers are taking on the Bruins at home (yay, but I’m sure it’ll eventually turn to boos). The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl (Boise St. vs. TCU) is also on tonight. I guess they’ll get around to playing the National Championship Game when the weather warms up in the Northeast. Anything goes, so have fun.
Open Thread: Win and they’re in
Posted by: | CommentsYes, we know RAB is a baseball site, but news on the diamond is slow because execs are enjoying a tiny bit of R&R as the calender shifts to 2010. Don’t worry, the hot stove action will surely pick up tomorrow. For now though, let’s focus our attention to the Jets, who have a chance to earn a playoff berth tonight in the frickin’ freezin’ Meadowlands. The scenario is simple: win, and they’re in. That’s all they have to do. If they lose or tie, they’re done.
Standing in their way are the Bengals, who have already clinched the AFC North. I don’t know how much Carson Palmer and the rest of his crew will play, and frankly I don’t care. Cincy has earned their playoff spot and is entitled to do whatever the hell they want when it comes to resting their starters. I’m looking forward to Chad #85′s trip to Revis Island, from which no man has ever returned. The game’s best running attack faces the game’s second best run defense, so it’ll be up to Rex Ryan’s league best defense to keep the Bengals’ 20th ranked offense in check.
Talk about the game, or whatever you want here tonight. The Knicks are the only other local team in action. Enjoy the open thread, but make sure you follow the guidelines and be cool.

The mega-important Jets game isn’t on until later tonight, and we’ll have a separate thread for that. For now, talk about the afternoon games here.

Open Thread: Giants vs. Eagles
Posted by: | CommentsThis one tonight has some pretty serious playoff implications. If the Giants win, they remain right in the thick of the wildcard chase with three games to go. But if they lose, well that’s going to be rather difficult to overcome. The Cowboys already lost, so the NFC East isn’t out of reach either. Kickoff is set for 8:20pm ET on NBC.
Go ahead and chat about the game here, or anything else you want for that matter. Dr. House is making a cameo on Family Guy, so that should be fun.

The best and the worst play-by-play guys
Posted by: | CommentsWhen ranking the best play-by-play guys in the business, the top spot approaches unanimity. Vin Scully is as good as they get. His simple but descriptive style is welcome in any age where it seems everyone wants to be defined by certain calls. (See ya! Hegone! It is high…, etc.) I listened to some of the Dodgers-Phillies series on my BlackBerry and it was nothing but a pleasure. Had Matt Snyder of FanHouse not listed Scully atop his best and worst TV broadcasters list, people likely wouldn’t have read any further.
Of the remaining nine, only three are national guys: Bob Costas is second, Dan Schulman eighth, and Gary Thorne ninth. The Mets’ Gary Cohen ranks fourth; he’s the one good thing the Mets have going for them. Even after having MLB.tv for the past three years, I don’t have any strong opinions of any of these other guys. I guess that years of listening to Michael Kay causes me to tune out baseball commentators.
(Kay was also considered: “bad voice, good at drawing analysis from his partners.”)
The worst, of course, is Hawk Harrelson. He’s bad for sure, but he’s a parody of himself. It’s funny when heard occasionally, especially the Hegone! thing. Chip Caray and his fists rank second. It seems TBS realizes this, too. Both MLB playoff announcers made the list, with Joe Buck coming in at fifth.
