Aardsma shut down with pain in right elbow

June 29, 2012 by Mike 14 Comments

Via Erik Boland, rehabbing right-hander David Aardsma was shut down with pain in his surgically repaired right elbow. “His body basically said, ‘No, no. Too fast,'” said Brian Cashman. “He felt some pain in the medial area (of the elbow) … It happens. So we’re going to back off.”

Aardmsa, 30, is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and had allowed one unearned run in five minor league rehab innings earlier this month. Cashman said they still expect him back this year, but a mid-July return is now unlikely. Aardsma’s 30-day rehab clock resets with the setback and will begin once he appears in another minor league game, hopefully in a week or two.

Aardsma throws two scoreless innings in second rehab game

June 23, 2012 by Mike 14 Comments

In his second minor league rehab outing, right-hander David Aardsma gave up two singles in two scoreless innings for the Rookie Level Gulf Coast League Yankees. He struck out three, walked none, and got two ground balls. No word on the pitch count, but something in the 30-40 range seems like a reasonable estimation. Aardsma will probably make his next appearance late next week and he could climb the ladder — High-A Tampa seems like a logical next step — soon thereafter.

Injury News: Joba, Aardsma, Romine, Feliciano

June 22, 2012 by Mike 33 Comments

Got a quartet of injury updates courtesy of Erik Boland and various NY Post reporters…

  • Joba Chamberlain (ankle, elbow) will throw live batting practice on Monday, his first time facing hitters as part of his rehab. Brian Cashman wouldn’t put an exact date on it, but he expects that the right-hander ““will help us” this season. In other news, Joba got rear-ended on the way to the Tampa complex yesterday but is fine.
  • David Aardsma (elbow) will appear in his second minor league rehab game tomorrow, and Cashman confirmed that if “everything goes all right, in 31, 32 days, he’ll join us.” Aardsma’s 30-day rehab clock started earlier this week, putting him on target for a return shortly after the All-Star break.
  • Austin Romine (back) has been playing catch and hitting off a tee in Tampa. “Assuming there are no setbacks,” he will play this year according to Cashman. A few weeks ago we heard that a July return was in the cards.
  • Pedro Feliciano (shoulder) will throw off a half-mound today and a full mound on Tuesday. He expects to pitch this season but I wouldn’t count on it. Maybe he gets healthy in time to serve as a third lefty reliever during the expanded rosters in September, but anything they get out of him is gravy.

Aardsma throws scoreless inning in first minor league rehab appearance

June 19, 2012 by Mike 9 Comments

In his first minor league rehab appearances, right-hander David Aardsma (elbow) threw a scoreless inning for the Rookie GCL Yankees. He struck out two, walked one, and also uncorked a wild pitch. The one ball in play was a ground ball to short. Aardsma confirmed that his next appearance will be this Saturday, again with the GCL squad. His 30-day rehab clock is officially ticking now, though you have to expect the club to max that out before adding him to the active roster.

David Aardsma to begin minor league rehab stint tomorrow

June 18, 2012 by Mike 32 Comments

David Aardsma confirmed on Twitter that he will begin a minor league rehab stint with the Rookie Level Gulf Coast League Yankees tomorrow. Over the weekend we heard that the right-hander was likely to return to game action this weekend. Aardsma has not pitched in a game since September 2010 after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip last January and Tommy John surgery last July. He’ll officially start his 30-day rehab clock tomorrow and be on pace for a mid-July return.

Joba, Aardsma getting closer to return

June 17, 2012 by Mike 45 Comments

Via George King, right-hander Joba Chamberlain (elbow, ankle) will face hitters in nine days for the first time since having Tommy John surgery last June. He’s been throwing bullpen sessions and the next step is live batting practice. Meanwhile, David Aardsma (elbow) is likely to appear in his first minor league rehab game with the Rookie Level Gulf Coast League Yankees sometimes next week. That will start his 30-day rehab clock and put him on track to return in mid-July. Hard not to be excited about the progress these two have made in recent weeks.

Injury Updates: David Aardsma & Joba Chamberlain

June 13, 2012 by Mike 11 Comments

Via George King, right-hander David Aardsma is scheduled to throw a simulated game this Friday. He had been throwing bullpen sessions and live batting practice, but this will be his first game action in over 18 months. Aardsma missed all of last season with both hip and elbow surgery. If the simulated game goes well, a minor league rehab stint won’t be too far behind.

Meanwhile, King also says that Joba Chamberlain has had no problem with his right elbow or foot after throwing off a full mound earlier this week. He’s also been able to run sprints during his workouts. Joba’s coming back from Tommy John surgery and an ankle dislocation, though his return is further away than Aardsma’s.
