After consulting with famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews and team doctors, Jorge Posada learned that his shoulder is only strained. According to Yanks’ manager Joe Girardi, Posada will probably be out somewhere around a week before he’s ready to catch again. Right now, the Yankees should proceed cautiously with Jorge; they need him healthy this year.
Former Attorney General in KC
Mark Feinsand is reporting that Alberto Gonzalez is with the team in Kansas City. This suggests one of two things. 1) Jeter is headed for the DL. 2) Shelley Duncan is headed down temporarily. Feinsand notes, and I can’t argue with his logic, that if Posada was the one hitting the DL, we’d also be seeing Chad Moeller in KC. Still, the possibility exists that both Jetes and Po hit the DL.
Hip, hip, oh, no.
Jorge Posada botched two pitch-out attempts today and left the game early. Now word comes along that Posada is heading for the MRI machine and could land on the disabled list. If so, Chad Moeller and his career OPS+ of 60 will assume the back-up catcher duties for Jose Molina. Needless to say, this is not good news.
Drinking the Yankees
Via PeteAbe comes the news that two more Yankees have lent their visages to Longball Cellars line of Charity Wines. Bobby Abreu and Jorge Posada are the latest two to have their faces immortalized in wine.
Abreu’s Finest is a 2006 Merlot from California. Money from the sale of this wines to the Police Athletic League, the charity of New York’s Finest. The Jorge Cabernet supports The Jorge Posada Foundation.
Also in this latest release is a Schilling Schardonnay. This is an over-the-hill bottle of wine that was once good but now just sits around pretending to be the be-all and end-all of baseball wines.
Speed of lightning, roar of thunder, fighting all who rob or plunder
Jorge Posada thinks the Yankees are underdogs this year. Since the Red Sox won the World Series, they’re the team to beat. “Yeah, well, they won. Now it’s up to us to take that away,” he said.
Jorge, please shut up
As we know, Jorge Posada officially signed his contract yesterday, and had a little something to say when he did:
“We need a No.1, and I think that’s one of the reasons we’re going after Santana. It is a need in October, no question about it. When you look at the past World Series champions, they were able to have a No.1 throwing at least two games to win the title.”
First off, the claim about past World Series. Josh Beckett, 2007, one game start. Chris Carpenter, 2006, one start. Mark Buehrle, 2005, one start. Curt Schilling, 2004, one start. You have to go all the way back to 2003 to find an ace going twice in the World Series. Now, Posada could have meant twice during the playoffs, in which case my response would be: “Duh!”
Mostly, though, I want him to shut up because we don’t need this shit right now. We know how the media in New York operates. Jorge says his thing, and all the outlets are clamoring for Santana because a player now wants him. There’s a reason, though, why few former players become GMs, and further reason why a good number of them (::cough:: Kenny Williams ::cough::) aren’t all that good at their jobs.
So spare us, Jorge. The Yankees will do what the Yankees need to do to win in 2008. And if that means hanging onto the Big Three, so be it. You know there would be no complaints from us.
Posada rounds out the 40-man roster
The Yankees officially announced their deal with Jorge Posada this afternoon. At this point, their 40-man roster is stocked in advance of the Rule V draft. A-Rod and Rivera won’t officially re-enter the fold until after the draft.
