So it turns out the season isn’t over after two mediocre weeks. The Yankees have won four straight games and eight of their last eleven games, and their +31 run differential is fourth best in baseball. Tonight they have a chance to run the winning streak to five games and clinch their second straight series win. Just keep winning series. Keep winning series and everything will work out.
The big story tonight: Sonny Gray. He’s making his fifth start of the season tonight and the last two have been disasters. Eleven runs and 18 baserunners in 6.1 innings. Six walks and three strikeouts. Something’s wrong here. Gray says he’s healthy, so it’s not that. Whatever it is, the Yankees have to get him right and soon. It’s tough to put together long winning streaks when one of your starters is rocking a 8.27 ERA. Here are tonight’s lineups:
New York Yankees
1. CF Brett Gardner
2. RF Aaron Judge
3. SS Didi Gregorius
4. LF Giancarlo Stanton
5. DH Gary Sanchez
6. 1B Tyler Austin
7. 3B Miguel Andujar
8. C Austin Romine
9. 2B Gleyber Torres
RHP Sonny Gray
Minnesota Twins
1. 2B Brian Dozier
2. 1B Joe Mauer
3. 3B Miguel Sano
4. LF Eddie Rosario
5. CF Max Kepler
6. SS Eduardo Escobar
7. DH Logan Morrison
8. RF Robbie Grossman
9. C Jason Castro
RHP Lance Lynn
Not a great weather day in New York. It rained on and off much of the morning, and there is more rain the forecast later tonight, around 11pm ET or so. It shouldn’t interrupt the game unless this one goes real long. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm ET — there’s only one 6:35pm ET start left this year and it’s a month away — and you can watch on YES. Enjoy the game.
Scoring Changes: MLB announced scoring changes that give two Yankees better looking numbers. Stanton was given a hit on an April 12th play that was originally scored an error, and Masahiro Tanaka had a hit allowed on April 17th turned into an error. As a result, Stanton goes from .213/.307/.438 to .225/.317/.449 and Tanaka goes from a 5.28 ERA to a 4.97 ERA. You know it’s still early in the season when one single equals 21 OPS points.
