Fan Confidence Poll: October 15th, 2018

October 15, 2018 by Mike

2018 Regular Season Record: 100-62 (851 RS, 669 RA, 98-64 expected record), second in ALE
2018 Postseason Record: 2-3 (22 RS, 29 RA), won WC Game, lost ALDS

Top stories from last week:

  • The week started with the ALDS tied 1-1. The Yankees got crushed 16-1 in Game Three. It was the most lopsided postseason loss in franchise history. Game Four’s ninth inning rally fell short and the season came to an end with a 4-3 loss Tuesday. Aaron Boone did not distinguish himself in either Game Three of Game Four.
  • Injury Update: Didi Gregorius needs Tommy John surgery. He will be out until sometime next summer. What a bummer. Aaron Hicks (hamstring) returned in ALDS Game Four. CC Sabathia (knee) had his usual cleanup surgery after the season.
  • The Yankees are expected to pursue Patrick Corbin in free agency. Brian Cashman made it pretty clear the Yankees will look to trade Sonny Gray this offseason.
  • The entire coaching staff is expected to return next season.

Fan Confidence Poll: October 8th, 2018

October 8, 2018 by Mike

Regular Season Record: 100-62 (851 RS, 669 RA, 98-64 expected record), second in ALE
Postseason Record: 2-1 (18 RS, 9 RA), won WC Game, tied 1-1 in ALDS
Schedule This Week: ALDS Game Three vs. Red Sox (Monday); ALDS Game Four vs. Red Sox (Tuesday); ALDS Game Five at Red Sox (Thursday if necessary)

Top stories from last week:

  • After the regular season ended Sunday, the Yankees had to wait until Wednesday to play the AL Wild Card Game. They picked Luis Severino to start, set their roster, then went out and beat the Athletics 7-2 in advance.
  • An ALDS matchup against the Red Sox was next. The Yankees set their roster and went with J.A. Happ in Game One. Happ got rocked in Friday night’s 5-4 loss. The next night the Yankees rebounded and Gary Sanchez hit two home runs in the 6-2 win in Game Two.
  • Injury Update: Aaron Hicks (hamstring) exited ALDS Game One with tightness. It’s his right hamstring, not the one that was tight the final week of the regular season. An MRI came back clean and the hope is he’ll return to the starting lineup in Game Three later today.
  • Tyler Wade, Kyle Higashioka, and Luis Cessa are all in Tampa staying sharp in case they’re needed at some point in the postseason. Sonny Gray is doing the same in New York.
  • The Yankees hold the 30th overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft. Teams no longer forfeit first round picks to sign qualified free agents, so the Yankees are locked into that pick.
  • Based on our estimate, the Yankees did stay under the $197M luxury tax threshold this year.

Fan Confidence Poll: October 1st, 2018

October 1, 2018 by Mike

Record Last Week: 5-2 (53 RS, 33 RA)
Season Record: 100-62 (851 RS, 669 RA, 98-64 expected record)
Schedule This Week: AL Wild Card Game vs. Athletics (Wednesday at Yankee Stadium)

Top stories from last week:

  • The week started with four games in Tampa. The Yankees used a bullpen game for Monday’s 4-1 win over the Rays. They picked up a 9-2 win Tuesday before a ninth inning comeback fell short in Wednesday’s 8-7 loss. A 12-1 win Thursday clinched the series victory.
  • The Yankees went to Boston next for the final series of the regular season. They clinched homefield advantage in the Wild Card Game with Friday’s 11-6 win. The Yankees got to 100 wins with Saturday’s 8-5 win. They closed out the regular season with 10-2 loss Sunday.
  • Injury Updates: Both Didi Gregorius (wrist) and Aaron Hicks (hamstring) returned to the lineup after missing only a few days. Neil Walker (shin) is okay after fouling a pitch into his leg. Gleyber Torres (hip) missed only one game with tightness. Domingo Acevedo (unknown) was pulled from the Arizona Fall League.
  • The Yankees have scouted Yusei Kikuchi. They’d like to re-sign Andrew McCutchen, as long as he comes on a reasonable contract. Zach Britton would “love to be back” with the Yankees next year.
  • CC Sabathia was suspended five games for throwing at Jesus Sucre on Thursday. He is appealing the suspension, which won’t begin until next season anyway.

Fan Confidence Poll: September 24th, 2018

September 24, 2018 by Mike

Record Last Week: 4-2 (35 RS, 30 RA)
Season Record: 95-60 (798 RS, 636 RA, 93-62 expected record), WC spot clinched, +1.5 GU for HFA
Schedule This Week: Four games at Rays (Mon. to Thurs.); Three games at Red Sox (Fri. to Sun.)

Top stories from last week:

  • Following Monday’s off-day, the Yankees welcomed the Red Sox to the Bronx for an important three-game series. Neil Walker hit a clutch homer in Tuesday’s 3-2 win, which was postponed due to rain, then the Yankees blew Boston out during a 10-1 win Wednesday. Alas, the Red Sox still clinched the AL East title as the Yankees lost 11-6 Wednesday.
  • The Orioles came to the Bronx next. The Yankees picked up a wild back and forth 10-8 win Friday, then clinched a postseason spot with Saturday’s 3-2 win. Aaron Hicks had the walk-off double in that one. The Yankees couldn’t finish the sweep with Sunday’s 6-3 loss.
  • Injury Updates: Didi Gregorius (wrist) is out with torn cartilage and could miss the rest of the season. Austin Romine (neck) has returned to action after being day-to-day with stiffness.
  • Aaron Judge returned to the Yankees as a hitter last week and Aroldis Chapman was activated off the disabled list as well. Both guys are still working to get back to midseason form.
  • The Mets engaged the Yankees in Jacob deGrom trade talks at the deadline, but they wanted a top young player like Gleyber Torres in return.
  • Justus Sheffield and Chance Adams will come to Spring Training as starting pitchers next year.

Fan Confidence Poll: September 17th, 2018

September 17, 2018 by Mike

Record Last Week: 2-4 (33 RS, 26 RA)
Season Record: 91-58 (763 RS, 606 RA, 90-59 expected record), 11.5 GB in ALE, +8.5 GU for WC spot
Schedule This Week: Monday OFF; Three games vs. Red Sox (Tues. to Thurs.); Three games vs. Orioles (Fri. to Sun.)

Top stories from last week:

  • The Yankees started the week in Target Field. They picked up an easy 7-2 win Monday, but lost 10-5 Tuesday and lost 3-1 Wednesday. Annoying series is annoying.
  • Following Thursday’s off-day the Yankees returned home for the final homestand of the season. First up: The Blue Jays. The Yankees earned a decisive 11-0 win Friday, though a comeback fell short in Saturday’s 8-7 loss. Sunday’s 3-2 loss meant back-to-back series losses to bad teams.
  • Injury Updates: Aaron Judge (wrist) has been activated off the disabled list, though he can only play defense and run the bases right now. He’s been taking batting practice and could return as a hitter soon. Aroldis Chapman (knee) has thrown two bullpen sessions and will face hitters either today or tomorrow. He could return after that. Both Brett Gardner (knee) and Luke Voit (back) were day-to-day last week but have since returned to the lineup.
  • Chance Adams was called up last week and Justus Sheffield will be called up this week. Triple-A Scranton lost the International League Championship Series.
  • The Yankees are among the teams not happy with the Josh Donaldson trade.

Schedule This Week: Three games at Twins (Mon. to Weds.); Thursday OFF; Three games vs. Blue Jays (Fri. to Sun.)

  • Following Thursday’s off-day, the Yankees went to Seattle for three games. Masahiro Tanaka was dominant in Friday’s 4-0 win and Austin Romine hit a late homer in Saturday’s 4-2 win. The Yankees couldn’t complete the sweep and lost 3-2 Sunday.

Clint Frazier (post-concussion migraines) suffered a setback and has been shut down. Erik Swanson (groin) and Domingo Acevedo (biceps) were placed on the minor league disabled list.

Schedule This Week: Three games at Athletics (Mon. to Weds.); Thursday OFF; Friday at Mariners (Fri. to Sun.)

Top stories from last week:

  • The weeklong homestand started with three games against the White Sox. The Yankees were flat in Monday’s 6-2 loss, but they bounced back with a walk-off in Tuesday’s 5-4 win. Another flat game following in Wednesday’s 4-1 loss.
  • The Tigers came to the Bronx next. Dellin Betances melted down in Thursday’s 8-7 loss, then the Yankees socked some timely homers in Friday’s 7-5 win and Saturday’s 2-1 win. A bad 11-7 loss Sunday ended a bad homestand.
