Game 113: ZOMG A LEFTY!!11!11!

By

Why is Jason Giambi sitting tonight? Why? Why why why why why? Texas starter Matt Harrison is a lefty, that’s why. Never freaking mind that Giambi has .919 OPS against LHP in a not insignificant sampling of 112 plate appearances this year (.895 OPS vs RHP), or that he went 3 for 4 with a homer yesterday, or that big league lefties are hitting (this is too good) .500-.563-.923 against Harrison in his young career. Erg.

David Robertson, get ready, you’re the next contestant on “Let’s See If You Can Magically Pitch Out Of Self-Induced Trouble Despite Being Left In The Game For Far Too Long.” The previous two participants – Edwar Ramirez & Damaso Marte – had to settle for consolation prizes: a four-slot toaster, and a parrot that can’t talk. Good luck!

1. Damon, LF
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. X(BH) Nady, DH
6. Cano, 2B
7. Dick Lock Sexy Sexson, 1B – you gotta earn that nickname
8. Molina, C
9. Christian, CF – two straight starts huh? interesting…

And on the mound, Andy “sure, you can” Pettitte.

Notes: Joba’s MRI is heading to Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion, which sounds really bad, but anyone with half a brain understands that something like this gets second, third, and fourth opinions, plus the last pitch he threw yesterday registered 96, something you can’t do with a major shoulder issue … this is a few days old, but the guys at Baseball America broke down the trade deadline action podcast style, don’t miss it, really really good stuff … despite all the doom & gloom lately, the Yanks are only 2.5 GB of a playoff spot, they’re just a good weekend away from leading the Wildcard …

Explain the (BH) next to nadys name for me plzz…

  2. TurnTwo says:

    (X)tra (B)ase-(H)its

  3. Ivan says:

Now I am a little bit nervous about Joba. At first I was like being pretty optimistic and how the feedback was positive news

But he goes to visit Dr. James Andrews. I understand this takes 3 or 4 maybe 5 opinions but visiting James Andrews is usually not good news.

Hopefully it’s the yanks being really, really cautious and meeting the best of the best which is usually Dr. James Andrews.

Have one question, did James Andrews perform the first TJS?

  4. Jamal G. says:

That heckler in Tampa is really getting on Kelly Shoppach.

  5. Mike A. says:

Wow, Jose Vidro was finally DFA’ed.

  6. andrew says:

has melky lost his starting job?
    fine with me…

    • TurnTwo says:

      i dont think so.

to me, Christian is a great bench player. he’s not a starter, either.

its amazing… $200 million, and we’re stuck juggling 3 different 4th OFers to patrol CF in the Bronx.

  7. Ivan says:

Yo what the fuck has gotten into Brandon Laird?

  8. Jamal G. says:

Anybody think with a couple more weeks of sucky Richie Sexson and Juan Miranda raking, that we will see a Miranda appearance in the Bronx?

Maybe what can bring Miranda up are the continued struggles of Melky Cabrera. Then you can move both Johnny Damon and Xavier Nady into the outfield with Jason Giambi and Juan Miranda as the 1B/DH tandem.

    • TurnTwo says:

maybe as a part of Sept callups… idk, something tells me the Yankees arent taking Miranda seriously. at least not yet. maybe they prove me wrong, though…

    • Mike A. says:

Miranda’s already on the 40 man, might as well call him up. Sexson’s been beyond useless.

    • Kyle D. says:

Isn’t Miranda’s defense at 1B even worse that Giambi’s? As in he has little to no range, but can’t even pick it? At least thats what I’ve heard. The nice thing is that Sexson can double as a late inning defensive replacement (except hes not hitting lefties like they picked him up to do, so thats about all he is right now).

I hope the Yankees just come to their senses and bat Giambi against lefties so this isn’t an issue.

    • Joe says:

Though it’s a small sample size, Sexson is actually doing worse with the Yankees, than the Mariners

    • Kyle D. says:

Juan Miranda is batting .220 against lefties this year. When exactly would we be using him?

    • A.D. says:

People didn’t like this idea when I proposed it on dotf yesterday

      I am for it

  9. Jamal G. says:

Outside of Jason Heyward and Michael Stanton, is there a better overall positional prospect than Jesus Montero in the Sally?

    • Mike A. says:

No, and Montero > Stanton. Nick Noonan is a stud, he’d be the 4th member of that group. Villalona and Kalish deserve a mention.

    • Ivan says:

Freddie Freeman has produce very well. He has been terrific.

Overall, it’s not crazy to say but with the Bat, Montero might have the best upside. Although I take Heyward over him.

  10. giselle says:

mike you missed “one” in the game thread title. it should be:

    Game 113: ZOMG A LEFTY!!11!11!one!1!!

  11. Jamal G. says:

Mike, are you as miffed on the Rob Scahill non-offer as NoMass’ draft guru, Lane Meyer?

    http://www.nomaas.org/draft/?p=109

    • Mike A. says:

Definitely not. Low-90′s two-seamer, low-80′s slider, developing change, no command? Yawn me. Great value at the 48th pick, but guys like that literally grow on trees, right along the 5 in La Jolla.

  12. Mike A. says:

I had no idea Harrison threw this hard.

  13. Joe says:

Cervilli seems to have found his way to AA

  14. TurnTwo says:

wow, looked like that Abreu drive was held up from the wind, no?

  15. Pedro says:

Wasn’t that guy supposed to throw in the 88-91mph range?

  16. Ivan says:

Yo andy Pettitte ERA is pretty solid for a guy who has two games where he gave up 10 Earn Runs.

  17. Pedro says:

    Thought Pettitte got squeezed there.

  18. Jamal G. says:

    Fuck this hick state.

  19. Joey H says:

doctor andy is the best in the business. you can take this news one of two ways. 1, they know hes okay and just want to MAKE SURE HES FINEEE. and 2, he is pretty bad or something minor and want to see to a further extent if hes that bad or not. with me im going with the second one. and thats too god damn bad. we are looking at “27/09″

    • A.D. says:

Id take it as a double check, nothing major, just want to make sure cause they want to be careful, probably was going to andrews no matter what, even if nothing came up with the MRI, I think they did the same thing with Jorge

  20. Ivan says:

Yo was that a legit HR or was that help with the Hot air and that Jet Stream?

  21. TurnTwo says:

hmpf. not quite the start i was hoping for.

  22. E-ROC says:

    This sucks.

  23. Joey H says:

ok two things, andy pettite sucks. umps love to squeeze him. and why the FUCK is giambi sitting after that night last night? dont give me some heat excuse

    • Joe says:

How old are you and how many times have you seen Andy Pettite pitch?

      • Joey H says:

plenty of times within the last 7 days to know he is struggling and not living up to his reputation of a second half pitcher.

        • Steve H says:

Yeah, what a sample size. Take the 7 days over the 15 years.

          • Joey H says:

ok thats nice. hes a different pitcher now and since hes been back than before he left.

            • Steve H says:

So what about his previous 5 starts? He’s had a TON of good 7 day spans this year as well as this bad one.

              • TurnTwo says:

dont argue… just ignore until he ends up at LoHud.

                • cult of basebaal says:

yes, yes … don’t feed teh joey

                • Joey H says:

i take things for face value. pettite can be as good as he wants in july. now is august. we need him to step up. and hes not doing it thus far. my take, his slow start and now slump is a direct result of his lack of time to train during the offseason

              • Joey H says:

ok so, what yo uare telling me. is a defined stopper. in andy pettite. can throw 5 good starts, and when we just had a huge blow to our rotation will go out there, and get bombed? c’monnnn mannn. thinkkk thinkkkk.

  24. giselle says:

look at that, a power lefty homers against a lefty pitcher. i hope girardi is taking notes.

  25. A.D. says:

By the way all those Richie Sexson defensive replacement people, his ZR is worse than Giambi & Betemit…so no value there

    • Pedro says:

Just shows how good our manager is. Richie Sexson over Giambi when there’s no defensive gain and certainly no coming close in terms of offense.

  26. Kyle D. says:

Does anybody else want Igawa to get rocked continually at AAA so theres NO way he slots into the rotation? He’s already got 4BB in 4IP.

    • Joey H says:

you just had to mention his name didnt you.

      • Kyle D. says:

See, if Isiah Thomas were still around we could probably trade Richie Sexson to him for a future first round draft pick and cash. Then take some other 6-8 guy and teach him HOW TO HIT THE GODDAMNED BASEBALL, ARGH.

    • Steve H says:

I want him to get rocked in AAA, go to AA and get rocked there, then A, then Rookie ball. Then I hope they send him back to college, then high school and see him get rocked at every level. I have never seen a guy look so sad, un-confident, pathetic, weak, etc, etc, etc on the mound.

  27. steve says:

ugh i can’t take this rangers broadcasts … they just interviewed three clowns in the stands.

    i’m not joking

i’m sorry if anyones parents are clowns, but why anyone would go down that career path i will never know.

  28. Jamal G. says:

    Josh Beckett is failing again.

    • Steve H says:

Looking a lot like 2006 for Beckett this year, without the run support. And without Manny, it’s not coming anytime soon.

    • Joey H says:

hes back to 06 form. ive been saying this all season. especially when that back acted up.

  29. Jamal G. says:

Getting into scoring position in the first inning is so meaningless.

  30. Joey H says:

i can be way wrong but does it look like sexon uses a tee ball bat? or is it just how tall he is. if so i suggest he trys to see if any of alfonso’s bats are still laying around after all these years. and wow hes a real cocksucker . as i type this he hit into that DP

  31. Kyle D. says:

    Posted in wrong thread:

See, if Isiah Thomas were still around we could probably trade Richie Sexson to him for a future first round draft pick and cash. Then take some other 6-8 guy and teach him HOW TO HIT THE GODDAMNED BASEBALL, ARGH.

    • Joey H says:

how about we resurect the storied baseball career of MJ michael jordan? maybe he can bring some of his rings, we can use a few of those too

  32. Ivan says:

    Come on Pettitte.

  33. Manimal says:

Why do yankee pitchers do that. Because you don’t get calls on the corners doesn’t mean you need to throw it down the middle. This is the best offense in the league. You make your own breaks and I still stand by my words when I declaired this season over.

    • A.D. says:

bit dramatic that the season is over, I get the pessimism, but we still have 6 games against the Sox & Rays, so we can even take care of our own business.

      • Manimal says:

They might make the Playoff but they are not a world series caliber team. There are wayyyyyy better teams than them.

  34. A.D. says:

    charleston already up 7-0 damn

  35. Pedro says:

What a terrible job Pettitte has done for this team when they’ve need him the most.

  36. Ivan says:

    Gotta make that play Cano.

  37. Ivan says:

    Iight, Yanks can certainly comeback.

  38. Mike A. says:

How about that Danny Haren contract? Talk about team friendly. Now they just have to hope he stays healthy.

  39. A.D. says:

Cervelli has quite the average at AA right now

  40. Ivan says:

Seem the national league has figured out Volquez a little bit.

  41. A.D. says:

talk about hitting them where they are so far tonoght

  42. Ivan says:

Not great omen when Molina and Sexson suck and hit bullets but nothing to show for it.

  43. Mike A. says:

They Mets are getting one hit by my boy Chris Young.

  44. Manimal says:

    Man, J Christ has balls.

  45. Ivan says:

    4-6-3 Jeter at the plate.

  46. Pedro says:

    Double steal, please.

  47. Manimal says:

Jeter doing what he does best.

  48. Mike Pop says:

    Jeter is soooo bad guys

  49. Mike A. says:

    Is anyone surprised? Seriously.

  50. ansky says:

well, i didnt see that DP coming

  51. Pedro says:

    The Yankees are a joke.

    • Manimal says:

      But no ones laughing.

    • Chucky says:

Dude a week ago the yankees could do no wrong, but lose one game, and go down early in the next, and suddenly we are a joke. Learn to be a fan or leave

      • Manimal says:

Good teams beat good teams AND bad teams.

      • Steve H says:

Yeah, calling them a joke is pointless. If you’d have told me in April that Darrell Rasner, Dan Giese, and Sidney Ponson had made several starts each, Wang would be done for the year, Kennedy and Hughes were winless between them, Posada would be done for the year, A-Rod would miss time, Cano would suck for 1/2 year and they are STILL in contention for both the WC and Division, I would be THRILLED with this team. I mean, what am I missing?

  52. Ivan says:

    A clutch DP by Jeter.

    • Joe says:

Check out the list of guys who have grounded into the most double plays
      1. Cal Ripken+ 350 R
      2. Hank Aaron+ 328 R
      3. Carl Yastrzemski+* 323 L
      4. Dave Winfield+ 319 R
      5. Eddie Murray+# 316 B
Good group Jeter will be joining

  53. Jamal G. says:

How the fuck is Fernando Tatis doing this?

  54. Chucky says:

I’m sick of this fair weather shit, getting on a player during a slump is one thing, but don’t turn on the team after one loss.

    • Mike Pop says:

i agree it does get ridic……i think we are in alot of trouble but we might be able to pull something off and be right there in the end of september..we got alot of time left

      • Steve H says:

Agreed, I’ll bust on Jeter’s dp’s, Abreus defense and baserunning in good fun, but come on, this team as it sits now, is performing better than you could ask. With the riff-raff they have put on the mound this year, they shouldn’t be battling for the playoffs, and they are. Give Girardi a ton of credit for it too. And cash with the recent moves.

  55. Charles says:

Nice outing for Betances so far.

  56. cult of basebaal says:

nice to see joey joe joe doing his best to enable jeter to set new personal bests in killing rallies by grounding into double plays …

nice of jeter to make adjustments and stop drilling low pitches into the ground with runners on …

    gah.

  57. Manimal says:

Seriously, who didn’t own a pair of superman Pajamas.

  58. Mike A. says:

Gotta be Pudge, right? Juan Gone wasn’t there long enough.

  59. Ivan says:

Man tomorrow’s game might start the football season folks.

    • Chucky says:

seriously, 2.5 games back and you think we are out of it? im done with this for tonight you people are making me sick! i have never seen such a shitty group of fans, might be time to find a new game blog cause this is pathetic

      • Steve H says:

I heard the Giants had a bad scrimmage today, must be Basketball season tomorrow.

      • Ivan says:

        You don’t get it.

See what I mean’t was that with Ponson and some crappy ranger pitching, it could be 14-13. A football score and the football season is beginning.

  60. LiveFromNewYork says:

The last Angels game was one of the best games I’ve ever seen and even if they had a bunch of unearned runs,it ws fun. If Joba had been Joba and carried us into the 7th last night, it would be different. We can’t afford another pitcher to go down…but esp not the future ace. I think we’re all just cranky right now. I know I was cranky for quite a few days after CMW went down.

  61. Mike A. says:

Matt Harrison is just asking to get lit up.

  62. Mike Pop says:

    mike young

  63. Jamal G. says:

How many Yankee fans you think said “Fucking A-Rod” or “Typical A-Rod”, but stayed quite as hell when Jeter did it?

  64. Ivan says:

A-rod doing his best Jeter impersanation.

  65. Charles says:

    Damn,double plays to kill rallies..Pathetic.

  66. Hybrid Moments says:

Really random comment but Sexson playing tonight is fucking terrible.

  67. Stewman23 says:

Does anybody see the harm in flipping Damon and Jeter..I’m sure it’s already been brought up in here, but I don’t always get a chance to follow the threads

  68. Manimal says:

If my math is right, Pudge has 1540, so young is out of the question

  69. A.D. says:

given the pitching has been a little iffy lately (and if Joba misses time more so) they should consider bringing up miranda and going offensive in CF

  70. Charles says:

Betances so far: 5.2ip,3h,0r,0er,1bb,5ks. Man,if he keeps holding those walks down, watch out.

  71. Mike A. says:

Ugh, stop it with bringing the IF in.

  72. Mike Pop says:

we can hit this guy and this bullpen…. its bound to happen just needs to happen soon enough

    • TurnTwo says:

no we cant… double wammy– lefty pitcher, and a rookie most of our hitters have never faced before.

  73. Ivan says:

    this game is bugging me.

  74. Ivan says:

wow a hitter doing worst than Melky.

  75. Newman says:

Anyone think there’s a chance that Joba’s injury really took the sails out of this team for the moment? Is such a residual effect possible? Or is it more just the overall inconsistent play we’ve seen all year?

  76. Ivan says:

Well look on the bright side, at we don’t have Michael Kay wine and bitch about the Yanks struggles.

  77. Jamal G. says:

Not as nice as Alexi Ramirez, but it will do.

  78. A.D. says:

    Nice little play

  79. Hybrid Moments says:

Pettitte certainly picks great instances to suck.

  80. Mike A. says:

Fausto Carmona threw more balls than strikes tonight. Yikes.

    • Jamal G. says:

If Andy Marte can show he has a pulse in that wood bat the Tribe can take the lead.

    • Ivan says:

Not surprising, considering his BB rate is dreadful.

    • Steve H says:

Ponson was 50/50 against the Angels. Talk about a fluke. He’s gonna get crushed in Texas (but the O will pick him up, they owe him that) But actually, if everyone else struggles in the Texas heat, will Ponson even be able to climb the dugout steps?

      • TurnTwo says:

a Sidney Ponson ‘fat’ joke? never heard that before. good stuff.

      • Chris says:

but if all the good players suck, then maybe the sucky players get good. Perhaps Ponson will be great. And maybe Melky should have started.

  81. Mike Pop says:

leave it to the yankees to make the rangers pitching look good

  82. Pedro says:

Somebody forgot to tell our players we are facing a 7+ ERA pitcher.

  83. Jamal G. says:

B.J. Upton can really, really cover some ground. He just glides out there.

  84. Ivan says:

The yankees are making him look like Santana.

  85. LiveFromNewYork says:

Joe G def needs to put Jeter in the leadoff spot. Or 9th.

  86. Mike A. says:

Check out David Cone droppin’ George Kontos’ and Phil Coke’s names.

  87. Newman says:

Mike, you calling the ol’ tying run will come to the plate deal tonight?

  88. Jamal G. says:

Just seen “The Ruins” today, wow. Can’t top “Hostile” in that genre but it is a damn good number two.

  89. Stephen says:

Why is A-Rod getting a Yankeeography already? He’s a great player, and probably will deserve one, and yes he’s won 2 MVP awards, but c’mon, he’s been with the team for 5 years and the Yankees haven’t advanced past the ALCS with him. I’m not saying it’s his fault, but shouldn’t a player achieve some sort of glory before he gets a Yankeeography?

    • Jamal G. says:

“…sort of glory…”? Like winning two MVP awards in his first four years as a Yankee? Like having one of the best offensive seasons in the history of professional baseball?

I see what you mean about the October stuff, but come on, the man has had his glory in quite the short time as a Bronx Bomber.

      • Stephen says:

Did I mention the MVPs? Yea I did. Did I blame him for the Yankees postseason failures? No I did not. He is probably my 2nd favorite Yankee after JOBA (because he is so good, I like good players, period). I just think it’s a tad bit premature to give a Yankeeography midway through his 5th season, while he’s still on the team.

    • Ivan says:

He’s gonna be here for the next 10 years.

    • Joe says:

Yeah, he’s put up with a bunch of bullshit people not appreciating him for a long time

    • A.D. says:

      Gotta sell DVDs

  90. A.D. says:

man wish we had already signed Bliech already, some of these 2008 draft picks have already been promoted, would be fun to follow

  91. Jamal G. says:

A Catcher sliding into first base, ha!

  92. Ivan says:

Top 6 inning we have the top order coming up, third time through the order, lets see if the yanks pimp slap this dude.

    Laird just stole Melky’s move.

  93. Newman says:

When did we trade Melky to Texas?

  94. Ivan says:

    Lets Go.

  95. Newman says:

Let’s get a rally goin here

  96. Link says:

Didn’t we used to own the Rangers?

  97. Jamal G. says:

Fuck, let’s get this thing going.

  98. Manimal says:

    Nice triple by Johnny

  99. Ivan says:

That’s what the fuck Im talking about.

  100. A.D. says:

if Jeter finds a way to gidp, i’ll give him props

  101. Jamal G. says:

Jeter, there’s no way you can GIDP. Please, just get your ass on-base.

  102. Flynn says:

P-fucking-thetic. This guy had an ERA of 237.5 entering the game. Naturally he shuts us down. An 0-2 start on a make or break trip would be tought. The bats need to wake up and Andy needs to pull his head from his arse.

  103. Charles says:

Yeah, maybe the Yanks should have something like a ‘rally mustache’.

  104. Mike A. says:

A rally killing sac fly by the Cap’n. Way to keep it movin’.

  105. Ivan says:

I thought jeter hit that ball better.

  106. Joe says:

    Alright, it’s a start

  107. Jamal G. says:

The Tribe has runners on the corners, nobody out, down by one in the seventh. We really need Tampa to lose, if a comeback is not in the cards for us, dropping seven back in the loss column would not be ideal to say the least.

  108. Link says:

These Rangers announcers are something special.

  109. Mike A. says:

Aaron Heilman comes in for the 9th with a 4 run lead, and he promptly walks the first hitter on 4 pitches…

  110. Charles says:

How in the world is this Matt Harrison guy doing this to the Yanks?

  111. A.D. says:

    chipping away

  112. Jamal G. says:

Wow, Ken Singleton played baseball in Texas during the 1960′s? That must have sucked beyond belief.

  113. Newman says:

Rays are about to get out of their jam unscathed

  114. Manimal says:

Seriously, who is Byrd? I haven’t heard of him ever.

  115. Ivan says:

    Fuck Cleveland.

  116. Mike Pop says:

what do you guys think we have to play like 700 ball the rest of the way to make the playoffs ???

  117. Manimal says:

That Cutter literally cut a sliver off his bat off.

  118. Link says:

*sigh* 8 in a row then drop 7 of 10 to negate the gains…

  119. Ivan says:

This game is really ticking me the fuck off.

  120. Jamal G. says:

Oh my God, the Mets’ bullpen is fucking atrocious.

  121. Mike A. says:

Oh my goodness do the Mets suck.

  122. Ivan says:

Where the fuck are those pitches.

  123. Mike A. says:

You know, intentionally walking Chris Davis does not help my fantasy team.

  124. bklynJT says:

That intentional walk looks great now…DAMN IT

  125. Jamal G. says:

The Yanks have played like they are itching to get blown out tonight, but the Rangers have kept them relatively alive.

    • BigBlueAL says:

The Yankees are playing like a team that got a punch to the stomach last night and havent recovered yet.

  126. E-ROC says:

The Yankees will call up Ian Kennedy to start Saturday in place of Joba Chamberlain, sources told Suzyn Waldman of WCBS.

Kennedy would likely have a chance of sticking in the rotation once Chamberlain returns, but he’ll have to perform well. AL-only leaguers won’t want him active right away.

    Rotoworld

  127. bklynJT says:

Can you smell a grand slam?

  128. Jake H says:

I swear this team looks either great or terrrible

  129. A.D. says:

well at least the dp is back in order

  130. Pedro says:

This team is definately a joke, just a bad one.

  131. Ivan says:

    This is just great.

  132. BigBlueAL says:

Love all you youngsters who are becoming to realize the reality that the Yankees will most likely not make the playoffs this season. Believe it or not there was a time when this did happen, I aint that old but do remember them sucking until I reached high-school, and while I am as frustrated as all you guys (just go back and read some of my comments) this latest injury to Joba has pretty much cemented that this is a bad-luck season where it most likely isnt meant to be….

  133. Mike Pop says:

    this sucks right now

  134. Ivan says:

    Fuck the mets.

  135. Mike Pop says:

we could still make playoffs big blue al

    • BigBlueAL says:

Yes we can, but not making it isnt the end of the world for the simple fact that injuries have killed this team. Now not having Joba and Wang, forget it no team can lose their best 2 pitchers plus their starting catcher and DH plus lose their best player (ARod) for over 20 games earlier in the season…

  136. Jamal G. says:

Evan Longoria hit three Home Runs in one AB. Two foul, one for real.

  137. Manimal says:

I like a pitcher that isn’t afraid to challenge hitters. Shows some balls.

  138. The Fallen Phoenix says:

    Robertson has balls of steel.

  139. Jamal G. says:

Ok, so maybe D-Rob can be trusted in a spot like last night. I’m sure Joe G. has taken notice.

    • Steve H says:

Another bright spot in what apparently is the worst team/season in Yankee history judging by some of these posts.

  140. Jake H says:

    Good job D Rob!

  141. Mike Pop says:

    we need a roy halladay

  142. Ivan says:

David Robertson just show me something man.

  143. Mike A. says:

    UUUUUUUUUGE strikeouts by D-Rob.

  144. A.D. says:

Robertson getting out of it, maybe that will ignite something offensively

  145. Mike A. says:

Why are they playing the FOX sports jingle in the stadium?

  146. LiveFromNewYork says:

    I love this guy.

  147. Ivan says:

Yo this pitcher is getting mad lucky. that’s like our third hit ball that struck hard.

  148. Ivan says:

    Get some fuckin runs.

  149. BigBlueAL says:

Holy Shit 2 walks for Cano tonight!!!

  150. Todd says:

All the reports on Robertson that I remember were that he had a very strong curveball and an average fastball. I see the complete opposite. A very strong FB spotted well and an ordinary CB.

  151. Ivan says:

    Just PH sexson.

  152. Newman says:

Why is Sexson hitting here? I’m sorry I don’t give a shit about his nonsense small sample size stats against lefties, he’s HORRENDOUS. Let Giambi play

  153. Ivan says:

    bullshit ass call.

  154. Steve H says:

Should have taken one for the team

  155. Jamal G. says:

Sexson, you doofy mother fucker, that pitch was a foot outside.

  156. Ivan says:

    Take the walk sexson.

  157. Mike A. says:

It’s about time Sexson did something. Big opportunity now.

  158. Newman says:

I cannot believe my eyes, Sexson with a XBH!

  159. Steve H says:

And we’ll all shut up now

  160. Jamal G. says:

Two rockets and a walk in this inning, time for the bullpen.

  161. Ivan says:

Lets be honest we all thought sexson would strikeout.

    • Newman says:

No way, I told you he’d double – just check my post a few comments above

      • Steve H says:

Don’t sell yourself short. You even called that it would be a laser high off the center field wall, or something like that.

  162. Mike Pop says:

damn man jus a lil harder

    • Steve H says:

At least he got to 2nd, didn’t stare at it. Stayed out of the DP, and we can score 2 on a single. Manny would have been thrown out on that, at 1st.

  163. Ivan says:

I assume I-Rod would come to PH.

  164. BigBlueAL says:

Melky apparently is on deck to pinch-hit!!!!

  165. Newman says:

How is Melky on deck?!?!?!!??!?!?!?!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME GIRARDI

  166. Jamal G. says:

Wilson Betemit PH’s for Justin Christian? With this piece of shit ballpark and Josh Rupe being a RHP, I’d say hell yes.

  167. Mike A. says:

    Why is Melky pinch hitting?

  168. Ivan says:

    Please not him.

  169. Newman says:

Is this some kind of a joke, Girardi? I’m sorry, I cannot get over this

  170. Mike Pop says:

    melky ?!?!?!?!?!?

  171. BigBlueAL says:

Shit why pinch-run for Giambi!!! Now Sexson or Betemit will have to play 1b rest of game and we no longer have Giambi’s bat!!!

  172. Link says:

anybody else rather see Christian here?

  173. Ivan says:

    Noooooo.

  174. E-ROC says:

God, no; Melky is pinch hitting.

  175. Mike Pop says:

    i cant beleive that

  176. MJM says:

What?!? How does it make sense to run for giambi with pudge and hit melky? why not hit pudge and pr with melky?

  177. BigBlueAL says:

    You guys wanted Torre gone….

  178. Mike A. says:

Why don’t you just put a fucking bow on it too, Girardi?

  179. bklynJT says:

Ok, can we put Melky on waivers already…
CANT EVEN GET ONE RUN HOME YOU A_HOLE

  180. Jamal G. says:

LoL, as I was about to hit “Add comment” for this: “Melky will do something great.”, he pops up.

  181. Ivan says:

    Why Girardi?

  182. Jake H says:

Did anyone actually think Melky would come through?

  183. Newman says:

This game is falling on Girardi’s shoulders. I don’t care how Andy pitched or what the offense did the rest of the game, he just singlehandedly squandered a golden fucking opportunity

    • bklynJT says:

Please let’s not take any blame away from Andy. When we need him to step up the most, he throws up another donut

      • Newman says:

How old are you? 15? Do you remember Andy Pettitte during any of the playoff runs in his first go around with the Yanks? Do you remember how good he was in Game 2s of series because he was the ultimate stopper? Shut your damn mouth and gain some perspective

  184. NYFan50 says:

It’s ok, Damon will come through.

  185. Chofo says:

Bad move by Girardi. If you are going to pinhrun do it with Melky and bring Pudge to Pinch hit, not the other way around

  186. Joe says:

That was the most insane baseball move I have ever seen, I can not believe he pinch hit Melky Cabrera

  187. Ivan says:

    Good A-Bat Damon.

  188. Newman says:

Is anyone else shellshocked at how a major league manager can be so dumb?

  189. BigBlueAL says:

Funny Pete Abe line: “I’m not following this. Pudge is the pinch runner and Melky is the pinch hitter?”

  190. Mike A. says:

Dude, he pinch RAN Pudge and pinch HIT Melky. Isn’t that the definition of ass backwards?

  191. The Fallen Phoenix says:

I half expect to see scientists in the stands for Yankee games so they can see a black hole here on earth with their very own eyes.

Maybe Joe Girardi got a tip that some were in Arlington today, and decided to do them a favor?

  192. bklynJT says:

Is there any doubt that Jeter will ground to SS?

  193. Link says:

    LOL…Andy Hawkins??…ah him and Tim “19 losses” Leary…those were the days…

  194. Mike Pop says:

    cap’n clutch !!!

  195. A.D. says:

    DONT SWING

  196. The Fallen Phoenix says:

At least it wasn’t a grounder, right?

  197. Ivan says:

    Come on.

  198. Joe says:

Someone needs to Nancy Kerrigan Melky Cabrera’s ass, or Knee

  199. MJM says:

    Fuck!!!

  200. Jamal G. says:

Heh, I told my girlfriend that the Yanks would send the leading run to the plate. I hope this inning was just a precursor of things to come.

  201. NYFan50 says:

    FUN FACT!

Melky’s .636 OPS places him just behind batting greats Juan Pierre, Chris Denorfia and Carlos Gomez. And hey, it IS 6 points better than Bronson Arroyo.

  202. Mike Pop says:

man o man he finally hit it well and kins was there

  203. Ivan says:

That has been 4 or 5 hits that have been hit hard that produce nothing.

  204. Jake H says:

Guy can’t throw a strike and jeter swings at something low that might have been a ball.

    • Ivan says:

Hey I wanted him to walk but that pitch was right there in his place away where he likes it that way and he hit a bullet and it was at somebody

  205. giselle says:

damn that ian kinsler. he robbed nady of hit to start the inning, too.

  206. Ivan says:

    Nasty Curve.

  207. Jamal G. says:

I know what Girardi wanted to do, but this was too important of a situation to worry about that. He wanted to get Ivan Rodriguez in the lineup ahead of Melky Cabrera and save Wilson Betemit to PH for Richie Sexson later on. But damn, I don’t like managing for the future like that. The benefits of making the “right now” move outweighs the risk of having Melky hit in front of I-Rod and any match-up issues with Wilson Betemit.

  208. Newman says:

Can anyone think of a worse managing move ever in their lives? Granted I’m only 23 years old, but that was easily the most bone-headed move I’ve ever witnessed

    • Jamal G. says:

It wasn’t bone-headed, just overdone. Joe Girardi does have a penchant for thinking out his moves to every last detail and I credit him for that. Sometimes they will work out, sometimes they won’t.

We have yet to see the final effect of his decisions though. Like I said, the reason for PR I-Rod and PH Cabrera was to get I-Rod ahead of Melky in the lineup.

      • Newman says:

Jamal, I’m sorry. I understand you point fully, but when you have the bases loaded and 1 out and you’re down 4 runs, you do not pinch hit with the worst everyday player in baseball who has been in such an incredible rut that he’s been benched his last 2 games. That is inexcusable. Like you said yourself, you cannot playfor the future when you’re down 4 fucking runs

        • Jamal G. says:

You’re right. I disagree with the move but I definitely understand it. I also definitely disagree that is was a dumb decision.

It’s like the Moose and Manny ordeal. He didn’t want to IBB Manny so as not to face Kevin Youkilis, he of the great batting eye, with the bases loaded. I understood that move but I am still on the fence with that move.

      • Joe says:

I hear what your saying, but either way its Melky were talking about

    • Steve H says:

Umm, how about not putting in Dave Stapleton as a defensive replacement for Bill Buckner, as McNamara had done all playoffs long. Tiny bit more riding on that one.

      • Newman says:

Fair enough, but that was more of a non-move by a manager. Girardi just willingly put the bat in a .230 avg, sub .300 obp hitter’s hands over a guy hitting .350 for the past 2 months (Pudge) and a guy with legitimate power (Betemit)

    • Link says:

um yeah I can think of a couple…

  209. Manimal says:

There is not one doubt in my mind Nady will hit a 3 run home run to tie this game.

  210. Joe says:

It’s incredible how quickly a fan base turns on a player. Not saying he doesn’t deserve it. Just an observation.

  211. giselle says:

how come gardner gets a chance to make a bunch of outs before the yanks send him down, yet christian, who already got a hit in this game, is promptly removed when there are risp? not to rag on gardner, but christian should at least get the same shot. i trust him more than melky, anyway.

  212. Link says:

Wow Robertson sure can get out of jams…too bad bases loaded with 2 outs in the ninth doesnt constitute a jam.

  213. Link says:

ok now its time to get a new arm in there…ok good lol

  214. Ivan says:

Should of not walked Byrd D-Rob.

  215. Mike A. says:

Well at least Girardi’s not a total fucking nitwit. He finally figured out when it’s time to take a reliever out.

    • Jamal G. says:

I think this is being overblown. The move has not fully played itself out yet. Again, I disagree with his decision but I don’t feel it was terrible or “dumb”.

      • Mike A. says:

Dude, he sent the WORST HITTER IN BASEBALL since April up their with the bases loaded, while the guy hitting .343 over the last 2 months, who is also a slow ass catcher, goes out to pinch freaking run. That’s got to be the most boneheaded move I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Torre would have been castrated for that.

    • Newman says:

But then brings in a guy who can’t get it done

  216. BigBlueAL says:

    Joe Girardi=Isiah Thomas!!!!!

  217. A.D. says:

cant believe jeter didnt take the walk

  218. Mike A. says:

Well look at that, Davis got those RBI for my fantasy team after all.

  219. Ivan says:

Don’t like this matchup. and what do you know.

  220. Jamal G. says:

Hey, wait a cotton pickin’ minute, this bullpen is suppose to be the shit.

    • Newman says:

Take out “the” and you’ve accurately summed up our bullpen right now

    • Steve H says:

Drop the “the” and you have it.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Its called back to reality. Or actually its called the starting pitching is back to reality, forcing the bullpen to pitch a shitload of innings again….

      • Joe says:

        You whine a lot.

Do you actually take any joy from watching baseball? It seems like all you do is look for the next screw up.

        • BigBlueAL says:

WTF you have people calling the bullpen shit. All Im sayin is lately they have been getting ripped at the same time that the starting pitching has pitched equally as bad barely getting deep into games anymore forcing the bullpen to pitch way more innings than before. Its not whining. Now saying Girardi=Isiah Thomas as I did was called making a fuckin joke not whining…

      • Steve H says:

Lot to be said for that, which is why, Pre-Joba injury, I would have rather seen Giese stay in the pen, save some innings for everyone else, and bring up Kennedy for Ras’ spot. All for naught now though.

  221. Link says:

and there we go….good night all i have work early in the morning.

  222. giselle says:

there’s that bases-clearing double we were looking for a few min ago!

  223. Manimal says:

Well this game is over. ill se you guys tomorrow when we get slaughtered by a good offense and a pitcher with a ERA of more than 10.

  224. E-ROC says:

Should I laugh or cry? :(

  225. A.D. says:

    Looosing ground

  226. Pedro says:

I wonder what goes on Joe G.’s head when he brings Melky in the game to PH with the bases loaded and the game (season, possibly) on the line.

    • Manimal says:

like I said before. Seasons over.

      • Newman says:

Then why are you watching anymore? Go prepare for football season

      • Steve H says:

Going too far. The rays have 12 games vs. us and Boston in Sept. Are they ready for that? And someone has to lose all six the sox and rays play together. We’ll have our opportunity, just need everything to fall in place before then with Joba/Kennedy, etc.

      • Joe says:

But you’ve proven yourself to be less than intelligent before so why should anyone listen to you?

  227. Newman says:

If Abreu gets on this inning, we should pinch hit Betemit for A-Rod, and bring in Veras from the bullpen to pinch run for Abreu. Who’s with me? Doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility for Joe G

  228. Jamal G. says:

On a positive note, I was able to acquire Clayton Kershaw straight up for Eric Chavez in my The Show franchise. Got four no-hit innings out of him before J.D. Drew led off with a 2B in the fifth and the Red Sox put up a five spot in the inning.

  229. Jamal G. says:

A-Rod is going to knock somebody the fuck out.

  230. E-ROC says:

    C’mon X-Man

  231. Ivan says:

    Get em next time.

  232. A.D. says:

    Abreu, correct idea

  233. Joe says:

    Go get ‘em Alex

  234. Jamal G. says:

For as dim as things look, remember that we will be just three back in the loss column if we can’t make a comeback tonight.

  235. Jamal G. says:

Anyone think Bruney will be left in to “let one slip”?

  236. Ivan says:

    Not smart hitting by Xavier.

  237. Mike A. says:

    Oh my goodness.

  238. Jamal G. says:

    Fuck you Brian Bruney.

  239. Manimal says:

Are you shitting me? Mike does he deserve the DLS back?

  240. The Fallen Phoenix says:

DICK LOCK SEXY! DICK LOCK SEXY!

  241. Mike A. says:

Just imagine if Melky didn’t pop out with the bases loaded last inning.

  242. BigBlueAL says:

Oh My GOD. First Cano draws his 3rd walk of the game, and now Sexson hits a Grand Slam. Ive seen it all now…..

  243. Steve H says:

hmmmm. me thinks we have a game here

  244. Jamal G. says:

Don’t ever doubt the 2008 Yankees, don’t ever. This team has fucking balls.

  245. Newman says:

Well hello there, we have a ballgame

  246. NYFan50 says:

I guess Girardi made a good call earlier not pinch hitting for the giant.

  247. Joe says:

Edited by RAB: Please don’t do that again, it effs up the site template.

  248. MJM says:

So we got a ballgame again!

  249. Manimal says:

Thats what torre did right, he always knew that theres a possibility that the yankees offense can come back. Its these games that make the managers look like retards.

  250. Jamal G. says:

You see, Pudge would have hit into an inning ending DP, not allowing Johnny Damon to be walked with the bases juiced. ;)

  251. A.D. says:

looks like pudge in front of melk wont matter

  252. Jamal G. says:

Hey, top of the order coming up against “Everyday Eddie”. We put a scare into him last night.

  253. Ivan says:

    come on melky.

  254. Jamal G. says:

Come on dammit, just keep it going.

  255. A.D. says:

    taking one for the team

  256. BigBlueAL says:

I think Farnsy just gave up a HR in the 8th inning to blow the lead vs the White Sox.

  257. Ivan says:

The only way melky gets on base.

  258. Mike A. says:

Melky Cabrera narrowly avoids making his 331st out of the year. That’s 12 games and 2.1 innings worth.

  259. Jamal G. says:

    I hate Marlyn Byrd.

  260. Ivan says:

    That close.

  261. Manimal says:

Melky would swing at a pitch that hits his foot

  262. E-ROC says:

C’Mon Yanks. Win this damn game!

  263. Mike Pop says:

    damon =[

  264. Jamal G. says:

Oh Mike, what happened with Mark Prior? You dealt him away?

    • Mike A. says:

Getting killed in AAA. So is Rusch and Ledezma. Trust me, I have to best available options in there. I don’t even have enough payroll to sign a Jeff Weaver or David Wells.

      • Jamal G. says:

Yeah, I’m scouring my roster to see who’s contract is up. Huston Street has three years at a very affordable price so he’s staying. Teams don’t seem to want Frank Thomas though, power hitting DH, can’t see why not. I mean, never mind his age. ;)

Justin Duchscherer will be my top chip, hopefully the market is better for him come the trade deadline.

        • Mike A. says:

Peavy, Young, Khalil, Bard, Maddux, Parra and Bell are all FA after the season. In a word: fucked. I’ll be able to afford Khalil and Parra, but that’s probably it.

  265. Ivan says:

    Who pitches the 9th?

  266. NYFan50 says:

Mike A: Suggestion: Make the board software here show no more than 100 (?) posts by default…basically hiding the older posts. Game threads like this are getting so big that the pages take a long time to load. Everyone would be better off if the old posts were hidden, maybe viewable only by clicking a link to open the entire thing.

  267. MJM says:

Oh…I thought he had enough of it…damn! Okay, we’ver got the middle of the lineup due up in the ninth, let’s hold them and take another shot at this.

  268. Jamal G. says:

Why does Ron Washington have Ian Kinsler leading off?

  269. Ivan says:

    NASTY.

  270. MJM says:

Seems about right…wish he got him more flush.

  271. Mike Pop says:

im nervous but excited at the same time

  272. Newman says:

Hahhaha Mariano, I love David Cone

  273. Jamal G. says:

Heh, Xavier Nady might be another big name tonight.

  274. NYFan50 says:

Yanks are going to win this game.

  275. BigBlueAL says:

    Here we go….

  276. Jamal G. says:

Damn, take one for the team dude.

  277. Mike A. says:

Keep watching Bobby, maybe it’ll hit itself.

  278. MJM says:

    that’s a tough pitch to take…

  279. giselle says:

now its up to alex and xavier

  280. Ivan says:

    just missed it.

  281. Manimal says:

    nice cup check for Laird

  282. BigBlueAL says:

That got him right in the nuts…

  283. giselle says:

    injury delay?! who’s injured?

  284. Ivan says:

    figures.

  285. A.D. says:

    fitting ending

  286. Newman says:

A-Rod, you wanna maybe run out of the box and not watch the ball roll fair?

  287. Manimal says:

50% of the people here couldv’e done a better job than girardi today.

  288. BigBlueAL says:

WOW. A guy (a lefty no less) throwing fucking burgers and ARod does that.

  289. Jamal G. says:

If this country is ever invaded, I hope it starts in Texas.

  290. dave says:

how about that celebration by guardado?

  291. Stephen says:

You certainly are maddening A-Rod. He’s great, but he needs to not hit into a DP there.

  292. Ivan says:

A-Rod swung at two bad breaking balls.

    • Ivan says:

The guy couldn’t throw his breaking pitches over and you swung at two bad bad breaking balls.

  293. BigBlueAL says:

These Yankees are like the girls at my high-school were, a fuckin tease….

  294. MJM says:

a-rod really didn’t get out of the box all that well on that one…slight hesitation was all it took…damn this one hurts

  295. Ivan says:

I HATE: MELKY, GIRARDI, AROD, JETER-2008. Together, all these guys blew this game big time. i won’t blame bruney because they brought him up way too early. he hadn’t shown enough progress in the minors in my opinion.

    • Newman says:

You hate A-Rod and Jeter, yet call yourself a Yankee fan. You’ve really got some credibility

  296. Lanny says:

We are 4 games out of the WC but honestly. DOes anyone expect a Joba-less team to catch Boston?

    Season looks shots to me.

    • Batty says:

Twins thought the same way but they’re still going for it. Who knows – IPK could pull out the stops and pitch like he did around this time last year. Maybe Hughes too.

I’d bet $4 on it happening….but they’ve done it before with less.

Yes, I expect them to catch Boston. I really don’t think Boston is making the playoffs this season. Call me crazy, call me a hater, just don’t see it.

i know the whole feel around a team can change inside of a week, but i can’t say i share your optimism right now. boston has been more consistent than the yanks have been, their fundamental numbers have been better all year, and they’re healthier. i continue to see the yanks put on the schizophrenic show they’ve been staging since 2004. two steps forward…one step back…repeat…

i want the yanks to knock boston out of it as much as anyone, but i don’t see how our rotation (even assuming joba misses only one start) is going to run down a team whose 3 starter — john lester — is arguably better than any pitcher in our rotation. explain that one to me again?

not to mention that the yanks flat out stink when it counts (RISP).

    • Ivan says:

He is a big-time flake and choke artist. I will never expect him to do anything but what he did tonight. The 25% of the time that he does succeed will be a pleasant surprise.

  298. Pedro says:

A-Rod had 3 FB’s right down the middle, all in the 86-88mph range, with little movement. And he couldn’t do anyting with those pitches, what a surprise!!

  299. Lanny says:

A-Rod isn’t Manny or Ortiz. We all know that. We’ve all seen it.

Maybe he should sign 1 yr contracts so he plays better every year.
