Game Two: Far East Matchup

Opening Day payroll totals slightly down
Trenton starts the year off with a loss

Wang & UeharaThe last time we saw Chien-Ming Wang take the mound was, well last Friday, but the last time we saw him take the mound in a game that actually meant something was June 15th of last year, when you know what happened. Wang said that ten month hiatus felt like five years, and I’m pretty sure we can all agree with that. He had a good spring, putting up a 4.15 ERA in 21.2 IP covering 6 starts, but hopefully he gets back to being the dominant groundball pitcher he was before the injury.

The Wanger will be opposed by Japanese import Koji Uehara, who will be making his North American debut. The first Japanese born player in Orioles history, Uehara is a nine year vet of the Japanese leagues, where he was a teammate of Hideki Matsui with the Yomiuri Giants. As Tyler Kepner noted, he won the Sawamura Award in 2002 (Cy Young equivalent), the same year Godzilla was named league MVP and Yomiuri won the league title. Uehara is known as an extreme strike thrower, racking up just 195 unintentional walks in 1,354 career innings (1.30 BB/9) on the other side of the lake. Those kind of pitchers have been known to give the Yanks’ fits, but hopefully they can buck that trend tonight.

Tiny bit of roster news before we get to the lineups: Dan Giese was claimed off waivers by the A’s. Judging by their current pitching situation, he might make it back in the bigs before long. We wish him well. Here’s tonight’s lineup, same as Monday’s:

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
Matsui, DH
Posada, C
Cano, 2B
Nady, RF
Ransom, 3B
Gardner, CF

And on the mound, the Taiwanese Terror, Chien-Ming Wang.

Notes: I thought Chris Britton was getting the shaft with the Yanks, but the Padres sent him to Double-A. Poor guy … how do you define yourself as a Yankees fan? … don’t forget to vote in this week’s Fan Confidence Poll if you haven’t already … please consider contributing to our Pledge Drive benefitting Joe Torre’s Safe At Home Foundation if you haven’t already, it’s a great cause.

I really wanted to see Burnett get the ball for game 2 but seeing Wang in a regular season game is good too.

Let’s go Wang, he deserves a 20 win season.

Tex should have signed with Baltimore out of the goodness of his heart. Forget the lack of a competitive bid for his services and tens of millions of dollars. What a douche.

The booing was cute the first game, now its just stupid. If the Red Sox fans boo him for any other reason than being a Yankee, then they’re bigger idiots than they already are.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

The first thing Tex did this January after signing his Yankee contract was to fly to the Baltimore metro area and personally punch everyone’s grandmother in the stomach.

          • Andy In Sunny Daytona

There is no way that he punched Omar Little’s grandmother in the face.

What’s also stupid is the notion that it bothers him. I hope that’s not true, but even if it is I don’t think it means much. Johnny Damon was bugged when he returned to Boston in 2005 and got booed heavily and has done nothing but produce since then (first 2 months of 2007 excluded).

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Good article. If Alex got a few big hits in the postseason (like Reggie did) all the other stuff would be meaningless, or even better, part of WHY they succeeded in the eyes of the media. Then it becomes part of a winning formula.

I’m reading a book on the 39 Yanks right now. Ty Cobb was considered to be a selfish ballplayer, what they called back then an ‘individual ballplayer’. Ruth was considered to be a show boater, they derisively called him ‘a fans player’. Honus Wagner and Lou Gehrig were thought of as team guys, called ‘a ballplayers player’ or ‘manager’s players’. Interestingly, the Yanks never won World Series with Gehrig unless Ruth or DiMaggio was on the team. The year Ruth left (1935), they fell to 89 wins and attendance dropped by 1/4.

      This shit goes back forever.

  • http://thebaseballdiarist.wordpress.com Kaitlin B.

There’s another 8 innings left, so there is no need to panic. Wang will settle in, the offense will get to Uehara, and we won’t have to listen to more panic from the rags tomorrow.

Uehara will struggle the second and third time around, unless he breaks out something offspeed (slider, curve, etc.). I can’t imagine that fastball/change combo will work once everyone sees both. He got Tex on the change, which now he’ll have seen the second time around.

That stuff goes back to his minor league days. Its not just something that was made up last year. It also showed up in Torre’s book. Bowa loved him, but felt like he had to stay on top of him. Cano would even recognize these things himself, and asked Bowa to do extra pregame stuff from time to time. He’s just a player who tends to get into bad habits, like lots of other young players.

I say Matsui has been the greatest Japanese player because he gives you OBP and above-average power. Ichiro is just a speedy contact hitter with no power (and league-average, at best, on-base skills) at a corner-outfield position.

    • http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?id=594331910&ref=name Jamal G.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Jamal, do yourself a solid. Watch Ichiro take batting practice one day. He’s really special, and can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants with a bat in his hands. Including depositing shot after shot into the bleachers. Its quite a sight to behold.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Ichiro: .331-.370-.430
      Matsui: .295-.371-.478

Ichiro’s Gold Glove caliber defense, cannon arm and baserunning more than makes up the difference in slugging. It’s not even close, Ichiro in a landslide.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Yeah, especially now that Matsui’s a DH and really has been for years.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

On the bright side, Cano’s killing the ball early.

  • C.Panella

    Here we go Chip…chip…chip away!

  • Rich

    I <3 the new Cano.

  • Drew

Come on X! prove me wrong pleaseeeee

    Cano’s looking good so far.

  • http://nyfaninboston.blogspot.com/ Manimal

So, how about that Longman in the bullpen?

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

      Brackman’s in Charleston.

  • Drew

  • C.Panella

    Weak.

  • Yankee1010

Got to love the way the offense is coming up with the big hit. It’s nice to see the RISP woes of last year are long gone.

  • C.Panella

w0w you gatta be kidding me cant get that damn run in so sick

  • Rich

    Bottom third bottoming out.

  • http://www.newsday.com/media/photo/2009-02/45088362.jpg Mike Pop

Who has a time machine? Lets go back to opening day.

(Not worried, just wanted better games). Ya know, it’s A-Rod’s fault.

  • http://eemack.blogspot.com Eric

There aren’t a lot of things more frustrating than having a runner on 3rd with no outs and not getting a run in

  • http://www.blogtalkradio.com/baseballdigestdaily Eric SanInocencio

Man on third, no outs and can’t score him. I mean, its not likely you come back from 7-1 to begin with, but with that type of putrid situational hitting you sure aren’t coming back.

  • Drew

okay, its brett until he earns the grit title. I see his ST swing is yet to fly to b-more.

  • southernyankeefan

    geez that is sad

  • Manatee Community College

    Missed opportunities are so frustrating

Michael Kay is just awesome. “Oop, changeup!”

  • Rich

At least Gardner brought his glove.

  • Rich

    Range!

  • Drew

    But he’s sooooo old!

  • http://www.blogtalkradio.com/baseballdigestdaily Eric SanInocencio

I remember when the Yanks left Alby out there against Detroit because they didn’t have a long man setup. Basically threw him until his elbow gave out. You almost forget how good he was before he got hurt.

    • Nathan

Yeah, I really hope Girardi doesn’t destroy his arm again this year. Just because we have a ton of possible bullpen candidates in AAA doesn’t mean that we should start using them all

  • Phrancis

    Yanks should clone Cano.

Hey! what the heck, atleast Red Sox is losing.

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Ramirez is a 3 outcome Pitcher.

    Walk, Strikeout, or Grand Slam.

  • southernyankeefan

Tex is gonna get a hit this inning i feel it

    • Phrancis

      yea..exactly.

      • southernyankeefan

must have been gas cuz it sure wasn’t tex getting a hit

  • Drew

It’s amazing what defense can do…

  • Rich

This idea that anything less than winning the WS is a failure for the Yankees is starting to ring hollow when they haven’t won a playoff round since 2004.

    • Drew

Yea, we should aim for third in the AL East.

      • Rich

Win a freakin’ playoff round. Once they do, they’re winning it all.

  • YankeeHater

I have some good news Yankee fans. You guys get to play the Royals next. Maybe you can squeeze out a win. Now excuse me while I take a Teixera and flush the CC.

Flipping back and forth between a “Kitchen Nightmares” episode on BBC America and the Sox/Rays game. I couldn’t watch the Yanks anyway. Blacked out on MLBTV and UConn doesn’t carry YES on its cable package wooooooo!

        • Mattingly’s Love Child

UConn still doesn’t have YES? Fascists!

          • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

The surrounding areas all have it, but for some reason, UConn doesn’t.

Did you know that most of our American heroes were known primarily for being Haters as well? Thomas Edison sat around all day talking shit about Ben Franklin, thats how he became such a success. Martin Luther King would sit around for days talking shit about white people, making poo jokes at their expense, hence his place in history. Hell, even Sully Sullenberger is rumored to have been making jokes about the Yankees while in the cockpit; and the rest is history!

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Martin Luther King to Lyndon Johnson:

AAA didn’t start today, only AA

  • B.George

Is it just me or is Jonathan Albaledjo the future 8th inning man?

    • Rich

Maybe the near future. I think Melancon is the future.

      • B.George

The kid has good stuff has yet to get hit hard in the majors and doesnt walk anyone I think he is made for the 8th inning

  • fatboy

Is there an up-to-minute (or close to) minor league scoreboard (box scores)? minorleaguebaseball.com sucks for that…

    • http://nyfaninboston.blogspot.com/ Manimal

nope, just wait for the DotF.

  • Rammo

If we shot out of the gate mowing everyone down everyone would say we bought it. When we finally put it together (and we will) they will know it’s not so easy even with the big bucks.

    • Drew

That’s one way to look at it. I look at it as we’re about to lose 2 in a row to the O’s.

  • Drew

lol at swisher coming in now… at least some one can work an AB

    • A.D.

does he get the start tomorrow?

      • Drew

lol.. nope, but at least if we’re losing in the 7th we can use him as a ph.

God damn, I bet you arod would’ve done his April magic.

    • El Generalissimo

EXACTLY, the loss is clearly on Arod, he would have hit a HR there and it would have been written off. WHO GETS HURT!?

  • Drew

WOOHOO!! we scored 10 runs in two games!

  • Brandon P.

    There’s always next season

  • KelvinPHP

Let’s just win the next game.

    • Drew

      thats the idea…

  • http://liberalmusings.wordpress.com Pablo Zevallos

Eh, it’s two games. 160 left. 160-2 baby!

    • A.D.

I’m a bit more pessimistic, 159-3, allow a mulligan in there somewhere.

  • pat

Bummer, you score 5 runs in games started by sabathia and wang, you pretty much expect to win both of those. Oh well.
