Game 101: Hirok you like a hurricane
ByThe weather forecast for tonight is a lot better than it was yesterday, but the Yankees and Red Sox still figure to be dodging some rain drops throughout the game. As long as no one slips and get hurt, I’m fine with whatever happens. Long-term health is far more important than the outcome of a single game at this point for the Yankees. Here’s the starting lineup…
SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
1B Mark Teixeira
2B Robinson Cano
DH Nick Swisher
LF Andruw Jones
C Russell Martin
RF Ichiro Suzuki
3B Jayson Nix
RHP Hiroki Kuroda
Tonight’s game starts a little after 8pm ET and can be seen on ESPN. Enjoy.

Other than the Blue Jays, all the other AL teams won so even if the Sux win,it will merely tie them for dead last.
Take the game, take the series.
I can’t stand the thought of the Red Sox coming to the Bronx and winning yet another series.
Remember, what ever happens tonight, no matter what: The Yankees are more than likely going to win the division, meanwhile the Red Sox are more than likely going to be watching every game that takes place in October at home.
Fenway Park doesn’t open in October
In regards to what I posted, none of that really matters to me.
Stop me if you’ve heard me say this before, but the Yankees are 4-11 in their last 15 home games against the Red Sox. I hardly even have to begin to describe how horrendous that is. The Red Sox have won three of the last four series’ in the Bronx, with two series’ splits preceding that (in 2010).
Oh, so they do well at Fenway (14-10 since 2010). Don’t care. The idea is to post winning records against the Red Sox, and losing three out of every four home games makes that damn near impossible.
Will this game likely affect the Yankees’ chances at winning the AL East? No, not really. Even less likely for the Red Sox to be that team who would be that pain in the ass.
But it’s a rubber game. It’s Yankees/Red Sox. I think I speak for all of us when I say go forth and fucking WIN.
*this isn’t meant to sound like an attack post at all, btw. But that home record I posted above is probably my biggest source of irritation, in general, with the Yankees. There’s just no defending that, at all.
Win, but win for none of the reasons you just stated. Win because we want to continue getting this division in the bag.
I could give a shit what this team’s record against the Boston Red Sox is as long as they’re ahead of them in the standings.
And, no, that’s not an attack either. I would just love to make this rivalry more the idiot media creation that it is. This ain’t your daddy’s Red Sox anymore.
But I don’t have a dad so what Red Sox do you mean? D:
*Crowd cheers and screams while pumping bats into air* AND TONIGHT WE DESTROY THEM!!!!!!!!!
Everybody’d like to win, but that stadium record is skewed — mostly based on last year, and the fact that the Sox came into the Stadium very early, when they were rolling and the Yanks were struggling, and then very late, when the Yanks had the division wrapped and were content to let Scott Proctor pitch.
This goes back to August 9, 2010.
Red Sox went 3-1 to finish 2010, and 7-2 last year. The Red Sox were below .500 when they swept the Yankees the first time (in May), and the Yankees were really hitting their stride when the Red Sox swept them for the second time (in June).
Seven of the eleven losses were by three runs or less, so these have been winnable games, to boot. Heightens the frustration.
Baseball history is filled with failed “remembers” like this one.
I wish there were 2 games each day
fly ball to right by sox should be an adventure
Haha. Yep, Swish should be DH Mike.
I just noticed that haha no hits to the right side
Hey hey my my. Hirok & Roll will never die.
Wow redsox crew calling game on BSPN.
Dan Stoolman puts me to sleep.
Da fuckin Swish is back, bitches.
Kuroda will finish these fuckers tonight.
Posting from my new phone. Yay for me.
What’d ya get?
Can’t wait for the 5. My 4′s on its last legs.
Go Android!!!!
Nah, dude.
So, was anyone watching Baseball Tonight, when they said, “Sure, the Yankees have the best record in baseball, but do you really put them up there with Texas and Anaheim?”
If I hadn’t heard it myself, I wouldn’t have believed it.
LOL what even
Why do people still watch these shows if they know this is what they’re going to get? Between this and MLBTR, I’m gold.
I was eating dinner and looking for something to watch. Also hadn’t seen the other scores at the time.
For the record,, about five minutes later they mentioned Twitter “lit up”, with people saying the question should have been asked the other way around.
Didn’t even turn on the TV till 8:05. I hate most pregame shows, as they’re kind of pointless anyway…but BT is the worst.
That’s why I watch MLB tonight on mlb network, not as bad
Texas has been terrible lately.
They’re a rotation of five #3′s, but no true shutdown ace. In many ways, in fact, a similar construct to the Yankees, in that they both have fine offenses, and it will be the quality of the pitching that determines how far they can go.
i want hirok to bean crawford. give them another clip for the yankee-sox montage.
Andruw Jones has such a badass personality.
5 pitch 1st. keep it up sox
I love Mark.
Nice play!
Great first inning!
Nice play by Jeter….awesome scoop by tex.
5 pitch first inning! i love it.
That was efficient, you can have a drink now Hiroki
Is ESPN going to show 1/2 the game from behind the catcher?
Would be nice to see Kuroda dealing…
(And nice pick Tex!)
Jeter gets an XBH here.
The whole Hirok substituted for the word “rock” is a bit of a stretch.
Using in every single possible way doesn’t propagate it’s coolness. It makes it seem even more forced.
boo this man
-1 for you sir.
God, what a terrible camera angle.
what is Jeter thinking? swing the damn bat
It looked like a ball calm the hell down
ugh you stupid fuck Jeter
The ball was barely in the zone that was a good take
How is taking a pitch in the zone with 2 strikes a good take?
Because it barely just BARELY caught the zone the umpire could have called it a ball
With 2 strikes, he should be protecting the plate on borderline pitches. If it was actually out of the zone, I could understand, but that ball had the plate. NBD, get him next time.
Rubber match?
Really, that seems the easiest sky to find a ball against…I think Salty just had a brain fart.
Yankees up there hacking (and whiffing)
So your upset at Jeter for not swinging…but upset that they are swinging…I’m confused…
Don’t bother.
can’t you tell the guy’s trolling? lol
Im upset that they swung at 5 of the first 7 pitches but Jeter didnt bother to swing at a fastball in the strikezone.. how does that make me a troll?
Doubront sucks. He will get crushed, eventually in this game.
Just saw Tex’s homer off of Padilla for the first time…love seeing him pimp the homer there.
He was making sure it was not foul
If I was him though I wouldn’t have moved from home till the ball had landed over the fence.
He should have done the Carlton Fisk double-arm keep it fair arm wave.
-1 for suggesting he take a page out of a former red sox book lol
I thought that would make it funnier. Really shove it in their faces.
I would have thrown Padilla a smirk, but the best thing about it was he even asked twitter if they thought it was going foul, now that is dedication to a cover up
So Nova and Hughes each have a 4.08 ERA. Which one finishes the season with a lower ERA?
Hughes. He’s trending in the right direction.
Hughes…he was horrific early, and has gotten much better. Nova on the other hand has been consistently not terrible.
Hughes but not by a whole lot
I like how Granderson got out on a changeup against a left handed pitcher. There is literally nothing he won’t strikeout against.
A-Rod gets to that ball, or I just hate Nix so much that I’m imagining it?
ESPN: If only the Red Sox were winning, they would be winning
Sorry guys, it doesn’t work that way.
ESPN: If the Red Sox two best pitchers weren’t so bad, they’d be good! I swear, they’d be leading the wildcard!!
…really? If they weren’t bad, they’d be good? I miss the YES network already.
I told you all the media would go nuts.
Really? We’re looking for a dominant number 2? What about this guy on the mound right here? who according to your graphic is 7-1 with a sub 3 ERA in his last however many games ESPN…
Way to go Kuroda. Don’t even challenge the guy with the sub .300 OBP
Maybe worried about the .282 ISO.
And…fuck.
Fuck you Kuroda.
God fucking dammit
Kuroda better not shit his pants a la CC.
And Andruw is picking the ball up about …. now.
Actually just……..now
Jones took a horrific route to that ball.
Wow shitty outfield positioning right there.
I get irrationally angry when the Red Sox do anything right against the Yankees, but god damn it Kuroda you have to be better than that.
My god is it make crappy red sox players look good weekend at the Stadium? Sweeney sucks.
Also Gardner (and maybe Ichiro?) cuts that ball off. Andruw is fine tracking balls but he doesn’t have nearly the range he used to.
Oh my god this kid is trolling hard
So routine groundball past a shift, walk and a single to left that nearly gets to the wall…
Other than the walk, hard to fault Kuroda for much of this.
The stank of that west coast road trip is still lingering with the Yankees. Enough already and get back to winning.
This team has not been the same since that dreadful weekend in Oakland. They are a better team than this.
They’ve won 3 of 5 since then.
3 of 5 isn’t that impressive when you consider the streak they were on. I’m not saying they are tanking, but I think they aren’t playing particularly good baseball. The pitching has fallen off and the hitting has been really inconsistent. Despite decent help from guys like Nix and Chavez.
They’ve allowed 3.6 runs/game so I don’t know why you’re thinking the pitching has fallen off. As far as the offense goes, they’ve scored 5.4 runs/game in those 5.
Forget the numbers. He’s seeing, correctly, something you’re not: that since Oakland there has been some falling off in the quality of play. Are they “tanking”? Doubtful. However, this big lead is not to be trusted. Without ARod they’re a weaker team–as they’ve been since Pettitte left for the DL. Moreover, they had been playing at a very high level of intensity during those good weeks, when they built up that lead. Only the very best teams–and these Yankees are not that–can maintain such a pace. They were do for a “correction.”
Irrationality of the moment trumps results.
They should have won 6 out of 5.
eat balls ciriaco.
That pitch to Sweeney was right down the fucking middle.
Yeah, well odds were Kuroda wasn’t going to pitch a shut out, and as long as Pedroia or the great Ciriaco doesn’t score/drive in the runs…I’m happy.
God Ciriaco is such a good player…did you guys see him hustling down to first there. Even when he makes an out he’s awesome.
even when joking it’s still incensing… argh!
Ciriaco is like my least favorite player on the Red Sox. Because absolutely nothing suggests he should be able to hit this well.
The Yankees are not getting any breaks with batted balls this series. Didn’t Morales have an outing where three of his four outs were hard line drives?
ESPN needs to stop the behind the catcher angle… it adds almost zero value to the game.
I hope the media doesn’t follow Joe Buck when comaparing the Red Sox to the Cardinals last year. But I knew the media would be jumping for joy.
So let’s make Doubront look like an ace. This better not be one of those games.
Welcome back, Swish.
Garbage time single for the return of Swish.
I fucking hate Ciriaco
Giraffe-neck is such a pain in the ass.
I really hate that fucking guy.
Ciriaco you piece of shit.
…I don’t think Ibanez should be giving Ichiro advice on how to play the outfield.
fuck you Ciriaco.
I am all set with Jones. Sick of him.
So it seems the Yankees are gambling on Russell’s BABIP rebounding? I mean, with the walks and the power he’s not the complete zero his BA suggests, but damn he needs a hot streak.
Ciriaco is Merton Hanks
Okay, let’s have a triple into the gap. We have the groundball single and the 4-pitch walk.
I’d love to see something positive Ichy.
I am starting to think jones should only be used as a pinch hitting role for homers because I swear he does two things and two things only: strikeout and hit home runs. Yes guys I am now on the scott hairston train
Jones as a starter is a mistake, but it messes up indoctrinated narrative here so you have to be careful about what you say.
Then who starts in his stead?
Seriously I don’t think they ever wanted Andruw as more than a situational bat. But when you lose your starting LF for the season you can only do so much. It’d be better if the Colin Curtis’ of the world paid off, but they didn’t.
Andruw was signed to be a starter against lefties. If he’s been more than that (which he occasionally, but not tonight) it’s been because of injuries. Better players are likely too expensive in prospect terms. So again, who’s the better option?
There really isn’t one. Jones was signed to be the right handed part of a platoon and be Outfield insurance. I’m sure Girardi and company didn’t envision Ibanez/Jones to start more than a game a week in the outfield combined. But, injuries push guys into action and forces your hand in terms of depth. So, it is what it is.
That’s why they got Ichiro.
Alright Choo-zuki, get er done Party-Rocker
They could really use another everyday, above average against lefties and righties, bat.
I mean, so could every team in baseball. You just described a potential all-star.
True. But I don’t care about every team in baseball. I do see a bit of a hole in the Yankee offense, especially with ARod out. Too many platoon hitters and low production spots in the order. They can survive without more offense, especially for the regular season, but deepening the lineup would be very nice.
And how exactly do they do that? They can’t stretch the budget any further. They don’t have major talent in the upper minors. And reliable bats don’t come cheaply. These aren’t the Yankees of old, but they are paying for the mistakes of them.
“They can’t stretch the budget any further. ”
Sure they can. They may choose not to.
Ichiro not exactly inspiring confidence since coming over. Then again I can’t say with certainty that Wise would be doing any better.
oh I can
Really? He’s 34 years old with a career .222/.258/.381 line. He was playing way over his head. He was due to get considerably worse.
but who knows when that was going to be
The Red Sox score 2 out runs. We do not.
The Mets score 2 out runs and we don’t.
Someone, on this thread, went to the bathroom and scored two runs. We did not.
The Red Sox are in last place and under .500. We are not.
idk, maybe it’s because we have a huge divisional lead…or because Boston has been generally terrible all year…it’s really not too important for me for the Yankees to win this game. I’d love to see it don’t get me wrong, but I’d love it in the same way as if it was the Orioles, or the Indians…
Pretty much.
Win the division. I don’t give a shit about the rest.
That’s blasphemy in RAB land. BLASPHEMY.
But yea, a win here would be nice. A loss wouldn’t kill me either.
I’ve already moved on to the Orioles series. They start three crap starters, so that’s nice. Unfortunately we don’t start CC or Kuroda.
based on CC’s last start and this Kuroda gem, it’s not that big of a deal.
You’re really judging Kuroda’s start in the 3rd inning of a two run game?
Do you really need to ask that question?
You’re right. I don’t know why I bother.
It’s called sarcasm. Obviously their recent outings have no bearing on their next outings. Duh!!!
Is this “sarcasm” too?

just let all the garbage get on base. Crawford should be going yard again. Worst part of losing this series is the Red Sox will go back to Fenway and get smoked by the Tigers.
It’s funny how some commenters use the “sarcasm” card when they’re called out for crazy statements.
Speaking of which, did anyone ever even see my reply to the whole religion/Andy debacle in the other thread? Still showing as “awaiting moderation.” Pretty tame reply.
I did not, unfortunately.
I don’t get that at all. I’ve heard worse than I had to say about 20 times in this thread.
I hate this fucking team. I hope Ellsbury tries to steal and then Cano stomps on his bad shoulder.
Dammit Yankees.
just let all the garbage get on base. Crawford should be going yard again. Worst part of losing this series is the Red Sox will go back to Fenway and get smoked by the Tigers.
That’s the confidence I like to see
Can we get a slow mo of the play at first, not the clear out at second?
ESPN won’t show the play at first.
ESPN truck takes a look at that play, saw that he was out, doesn’t show it.
Gee, ESPN, show the wild card graphic some more.
I don’t think I get the point yet.
Well done.
great play by Nix to turn that DP.. that was nice
That’s better.
Okay no more screwing around with Doubront.
Gritty DP… gritty hustle in almost beating that out.
We got 4 outs that inning, on two double plays.
Ooh. The camera just caught Grit-ster say “ef.”
That’s not very grit-like.
God, if we didn’t have Jeter ESPN wouldn’t like a single player on our team.
They like Swisher.
Stan. Stan.
Eat. Work. Gym. Sleep.
Stan. Stan.
Eat. Work. Gym. Creepy Lamb. Sleep.
I love that sheep/lamb.
Reminds me of Genesis: The World We Live In
I meant Land of Confusion
(Duh. I’m an idiot)
Well Superman, where are you now?
Nix!
first pitch DP.. very nice
Fuck off Jeter!
You dumb fucking idiot Jeter
Seriously you should go troll somewhere else
Well, I certainly couldn’t have predicted that double play off THAT bat…
Thanks Captain! Ugh.
Schulman set that up.
First pitch DP on a pitch that was worse than the one he took for strike 3 in the first inning. SMH.
Doubront pitching better than Lester pretty much sums up why the red sox suck and will continue to suck this season.
Guys, let’s all pause a moment and mourn the misfortune of the 2012 Boston Red Sox.
Mourn = celebrate?
Should have said: Guys, let’s all pause a moment and join ESPN in mourning the misfortune of the 2012 Boston Red Sox.
It’s a damn human tragedy. They had to fire that junkie Francona and Theo shafted them with those Crawford and Lackey deals, and God decided that it wasn’t in the cards for them last year. So we should mourn for them everyday.
again, thanks for the awesome at bat jeter.
Good AB by Curtis. He should think about running with two out.
Feels like they’ve worked Doubront well, but his pitch count is still manageable.
That’s because for every guy that has worked him we have people like Jones and Jeter that groundout on the first pitch.
More shitty BABIP luck. Damn.
Tex couldn’t have hit that ball any harder…
hard hit, but caught.. no luck so far for the Yankees
Trade for Headley right meow.
Anthony Rizzo has 7 homers, Adrian Gonzalez has 10. I’d put good money down that Rizzo finishes with more homers than Gonzalez. I will add that I hate Gonzalez.
First pitch to Ross was right down the middle.
You aren’t obligated to allow the leadoff batter on every inning Hiroki.
too many baserunners allowed by Hiroki
that DP was nice, he should teach Rapada how to throw to second
1. Cano is too smooth to be allowed.
2. I hate 1-4-3 DP’s
Cano is too smooth to be injured. SIGN HIM.
sign him to a reasonable deal. I’m actually in the let him walk camp if he wants anymore than 6 years after next season.
I think he’ll get more than that. My ideal scenario is a 6 year deal with two vesting options for plate appearances. If he hits those vesting requirements, he’s at least not injured, and that could take him to eight.
But as I’ve said before, I have blinders for Cano. He’s my boy.
Is there anyone here who really trusts 2012 Ivan Nova over 2012 Phil Hughes in the playoffs? It’s not like Nova gives up fewer home runs.
I just see this assumption they’ll move Hughes to the bullpen because he did it years ago and it makes no sense to me whatsoever.
As long as Hughes starts on the road I’m fine with him starting in the playoffs (assuming we get there)
Hughes gives up home runs.
Nova gives up tons of extra base hits.
Pick your poison.
Hughes. He doesn’t put anybody on base, and allows solo shots.
That actually spooks me in some ways – Hughes is bound to give up a couple two or three-run shots with the sheer volume of HR he allows. Hope that something like that doesn’t come back to bite them at the worst moment.
That said, I’m taking Hughes right now myself, only because Nova routinely allows baserunners. Hughes seems to be a lot more capable of dominating on any given night.
I agree that the law of averages will catch up and, yes, some HRs will be hit with runners on base, but there have also been very, very good pitchers throughout history who were extremely HR-prone.
Well, of course.
Especially if they are in the right ballpark for half their games, a fly ball pitcher can be extremely successful. In this case, I don’t think it’s any surprise Hughes has been better on the road than at home.
Right now I see Hughes becoming vintage Brad Radke with a higher K/9 rate and I’m pretty happy with that.
Wow, give credit to Kuroda.
The assumption is more based on a general impatience with Hughes than anything concrete. I don’t think anything’s a given.
we got this game
Doubront has a 4.5 ERA and a 4.3 FIP. SCORE RUNS
Jesus Christ.
How many more times are these three going to badger the “Lester and Beckett being better” POV. HOLY SHIT!
4 runs in 6 innings is a step in the right direction? If you mean it’s an improvement over 11 runs in 4.2 innings, then yes it is a step in the right direction.
I usually don’t let anything ESPN says effect me, but this goes beyond them. I’m fucking sick of our rotation not getting the respect it deserves “CC’s going to have a lot of pressure in his starts because of the lack of quality depth behind him” my fucking ass.
Kuroda is averaging almost 7IP per start, with a 3.34 ERA
Hughes has an ERA of 3.34 in 15 starts since My 6th
and Nova has been a decent 4 guy as well..
Our rotation is damn good ESPN, MSN, and some commenters here. fuck.
+1 for the Yankee rotation
You know ESPN will never give the Yankees their due, it’s against company policy.
Swing at errthang.
Is that a word?
Be nice for Andruw to run into one here.
come onnnn, make him pay
Please, make him pay for all the walks
If Ichiro swings first pitch I am turning this game off.
you know it’s coming.. and people will defend saying it was bound to be a good pitch to hit
Thank god he didn’t…
Well he tried.
women’s team gymnastic is a decent distraction right now.
Six base runners already against Doubront. It’s about time to start taking advantage.
Just to get things straight, I don’t care how good this game winds up getting in the next 35 minutes, Breaking Bad comes first.
Priorities, people.
I’m into Newsroom
I’m interested. No HBO, though. Might start DL’ing it at some point.
DVR dude, it’s the 2010′s
Oh no no no. This happens in real time, baby.
Should we get another bat even if it’s part-time?
Yep. All the makings of severe frustration right now, fortunately there’s still time to atone for that.
RISPfail special
At least they cleared the pitcher’s spot.
Yikes, Ichiro… Maybe these poor ABs against lefties will prove to Girardi that Ichiro should really only platoon, and never hit against lefties.
I sure am glad we decided to upgrade our offense with the guy with the 76 wRC+
Ichiro had better go on a tear in the next week, or I’m pretty much giving up on him. I have no idea how his approach worked for as long as it did.
Really need Swisher to get back to being a presence in the lineup.
chase headly please
Doubront is on the verge of getting crushed. It’s gonna happen next inning and we will all laugh.
Problem is that the runners are being let on with 1 or more outs. We have not led off an inning great tonight.
And actually, Orel was exactly right. The Yankees are not playing with the urgency the Red Sox are. Complacency can bite you in the ass sometimes. Let’s hope it doesn’t this season.
Nix leadoff with a walk before Jeter ruined it but doing Jeter things.
MULTIPLE base runners.
I am tired of you spreading so much hate about Ichiro and CC and Jeter.
Either that or Doubront has their number.. 3rd start this season that they can’t get to him
I actually think Doubront has been their best starting pitcher all year. The game yesterday was the one that we should have won, But CC bit the bullet.
Really? Your only hope for the red sox is that the yankees get complacent? You are up shit’s creek without a paddle because the red sox problems run deep and cold and hard.
Oh my god that was terrible. Like I’d expect that from Ibanez. Or Gary Sheffield.
Gary Sheffield was awesome.
in 1997
As a Yankee even. He was crap defensively though, just like every single player on the team during the time period.
Which did you prefer? Bobby Abreu’s wallphobia or Sheffield’s one handed catches?
Sheffield was a better defender but that isn’t saying much.
At hitting, anyway. He was a jerk.
And this was an upgrade over Wise who was hitting better lately how?
This Ichiro trade is frustrating.
34 years old. .222/.258/.381.
That’s the same OPS Ichiro has right now. And he’s 38.
Just saying.
Why? It’s basically Ichiro over Wise, and that’s pretty obviously an upgrade
You can put him out there every day and know the position is going to be played well. He’s not going to hit .400 while he’s here. That, to me, counts for a hell of a lot and a definitely upgrade over a journeyman like Wise.
earthworm jim, everybody
hiroki is pitching well. sox should only have 1, and the offense is… frustrating, but kuroda doing kuroda things. russell needs to work some magic now.
lol. or nix. same guy right?
Being 1 hit by Felix Dubrount is zero fun.
You forget what he did to us in Fenway.
Nix is really getting good at that short-porch opposite field swing.
Didn’t Max Scherzer have a frustrating “effectively wild” start against the Yanks at the start of the season?
It was frustrating, but they were winning that game.
I could swear you are thinking of the ALDS game last year where Scherzer throw 100 pitches in five innings, but kept the Yankees off the board.
And by the way, for people complaining about Ichiro being out there tonight, its either Ichiro or Ibanez. Think about that.
Jeter has been owned tonight… great stuff from the leadoff hitter
Jeter half your offensive value consists in crushing lefties. This is bad.
Fuck off Derek.
Jeter’s just having a banner night.
But he’s hitting over teh .300z!!1!!1! He’s an All-Star!
Didn’t you get banned? I’m beginning to miss that brief window already.
After one disagreement?
I did say “beginning”, didn’t I?
Are you beginning to wish the other half dozen people criticizing Jeter to get banned?
Nope. You’ve seemed extra combative lately.
Craptastic game but he’s hitting 333 /367 /430 this month. Simmer down.
Kuroda is pitching a great game. Get the man some damn runs. Please.
“Dick around”
Wow this really sucks.
1 hit allowed by Felix Doubront… and even that was a groundball single through the infield.
Guys, Doubront is not a crappy pitcher. Especially against the Yankees whom he beat at Fenway in the 4 game set. and held them down before the epic comeback
The game yesterday is the one we should have won.
He is garbage. You just hate the Yankees.
No he doesn’t. You just don’t understand Greg.
Doubront is not nearly good enough that this offense should have 1 hit against him. CC’s start is irrelevant.
Who said he was crappy? Would it be possible to stop creating these ridiculous strawman?
He has a 4.54 ERA, and a FIp of 4.31, so he’s not exactly an ace who should be 1 hitting the Yankees.
Phillip Humber was NO-HITTING the Yankees through 7 last year.
Doug Davis shut them out in Wrigley last year.
Should they have done that? No. But it happened. And Doubront is better than both of them.
So taking that the next step basically we should tip our hat to ANY pitcher?
Nice logic.
I guess we should expect any pitcher with a below average ERA to 1 hit the Yankees now.
I get it now… never the offense’s fault… who could have expected the Yankees to come up with more than 1 groundball single (now 2) against an ace like Doubront.
97 ERA+ so he’s below league average.
What’s his line against the Yankees?
Better than it should be.
1 hit.
5 walks.
Its the first pitch swinging that is annoying.
fuck…nice play to save a run…but gotta get an out there Derek.
Great defense.
Again, banner night Jete.
Jeter killing the Yanks.. he has to make that catch
so much for keeping the trash off the field. Crawford is a joke.
That’s dangerously close to the Monday comment
no it’s not. It’s not even close. Crawford is not a good player. Stop making shit up.
Sorry, did you just call Crawford trash? It’s not the same, it’s dangerously close – like I said.
Not making shit up.
I would say the same thing if Punto got on base. He too is trash. It’s ok to say players of every race are trash or suck. Not everything is racial.
Catch the fucking ball you POS
Oh.
come the fuck on Hiroki.. strikes..
jesus christ
now all we need is a DP..
“fucking a” lol
Hooray for an outfielder throwing to the correct base.
+1
Thought for sure he was going to fire it to 3rd.
that. was. fucking. incredible.
HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!!! Good job ESPN
what happened?
They cut to Pedroia just as he screamed “fuckin A” right into the camera
damn, don’t know how i missed that.
Pedrioa was upset, and as he was going back to the dugout, for some reason there was a live Microphone right next to him and heard him clearly scream “fuckin a.”
Awwwwww poor Pedey can’t get an XBH when there isn’t a big dumb fucking wall in left field.
Really hoped the real Yanks would return tonight. One friggin hit, c’mon!
beauty!
That’s a game-saver, Hiroki.
Time to cash in with some runs of their own.
hope CC is in the dugout taking notes
Can we score some frigging runs please?
Nice job Hirok.
Now for some runs please … pretty please.
Awesome!
now please score some runs.
I really hope some stupid Political Correctness pansy organization goes all “think of the children” on Pedrioa, the Sox, and ESPN for that.
They desperately need an additional bat in that lineup. Ichiro’s not going to solve much of anything. I hope Cashman comes through.
I read a Tweet that said the Dodgers got Rollins and Howard. Can anybody confirm this?
That doesn’t come close to passing the sniff test.
I know, right.
It was a fake Buster Olney account lol
neither mlbtr or google has anything, so I’m going to say no.
Buster Olney ?@Busler_ESPN
BLOCKBUSTER trade just agreed to that sends Ryan Howard & Jimmy Rollins to #Dodgers; #Phillies get James Loney, Dee Gordon & Zach Lee.
A friend of mine retweeted this. “Busler” lol
Crap. Didn’t even notice that was the fake account. Sorry.
Busler not Buster
@Buster_ESPN
So, no. Unless that one is the fake.
awful swing.. that was a hanger
This is pathetic.
Greg’s pants must be soiled after that strike out. You gonna hold your Doubront blow up doll extra tight tonight Greggors?
Fake rumor going around that says Shields going to the Braves for Teheran and Bethancourt. If this were real, who would have won?
It’s the Brett Cecil model. Fastball, change and curve. No wonder we struggle against him.
Getting owned by Felix is not so feliz.
lefty masher that can’t hit lefties.. great value
Well glad we’ve got Swisher back in the lineup.
Get Scott Hairston please.
I’m tired of you spreading so much hate about Jones.
I dislike Jones. I don’t hate him. I didn’t hate him when he was carving up Fenway. But we need an upgrade.
+1
Yep. Better without A-Rod.
That was the single most ridiculous thing I saw. No, he hasn’t been at his best this year. But the Yankees are better without him and their bench guys playing regularly? Give me a break.
…who said that? they deserve a slap.
It was Pedroia’s grittiness that allowed him to go to the ground and catch that.
Ok. It’s time to bench Andruw for a few games . . .
Jones is f**king done. Couldn’t cut that ball off in the second. Can’t hit for his life.
Team is too left-handed now.
Lucky to have the big lead. 3-7 in the last 10 after tonight’s poor effort.
HUSTLE Jones, HUSTLE
Holy shit Andruw.
Felix Doubront’s career against the Yankees
1-0 with a 3.18 ERA m 11 hits and 19 K’s in 17 innings (Not counting tonight)
Crappy pitcher huh?
Yes, he is. What he does against one team is irrelevant. It’s 1/29th of the available information.
Seems like the Yankees have been putting a lot of efforts like this lately regardless of whether the pitcher appears to be really good or really crappy.
More to worry about than whether or not Doubrant’s any good.
Watching this…you’d think Cy Young was pitching…
Yes… below average this year unless you insanely look at 17 innings and consider that more meaningful than 100+ innings.
I’ve been defending Jones a lot lately…but fuck Andruw…come on man.
Can the Andruw apologists for his Fielding prowess please be quiet for a month, now? Or still in denial?
Put pena out there
That was way worse than damon or matsui in 2009.
i know people hate ichiro for what he has(n’t) done at the plate, but seeing druw in left like that makes me appreciate the balls off of ichiro.
Bottom 4 in the Yankees lineup have OBP of .305 or worse. It’s like a NL lineup they ran out there today.
Kuroda hoe
And another double play.
Seriously – when the hell do the Yankees cash in?
Robbie hanging in there like a champ!!
That Ross slide was borderline.
It looked pretty run-of-the-mill to me.
Maybe it was the slo-mo, looked a little late…
I am feeling like the Yanks have got this game.
Hope you are right!
god i love kuroda.
According to some though, he’s not a solid enough pitcher to be the Yankees number 2.
He’s more like a number 2.5.
What more does he possibly have to do to be considered a #2?
OK. I’ll give him 2.333.
sarcasm?
shhh
well once kuroda gets pegged with this loss, he’ll be 10-8, so those people are justified.
Seriously?
no. not at all. lol. also, yay russ!
He’s no Nova.
again please tell me sarcasm? I don’t even know, this place has gone crazy the last couple days. Arguments about contracts, and trades, and people claiming other people hate the wrong players…It’s been making my head hurt.
lol, yeah, sarcasm. i don’t convey very well i guess, heh. i just thought saying “i love kuroda” would’ve cut me some slack though :p
I don’t pay close enough attention lol…but like I said…this place has become a loony bin the last few days.
i’ve noticed O_O it’s kind of a gamble to visit these boards nowadays.
Kuroda looked nasty on that last AB.
The Yankees really should get #HIROK some runs. He’s been awesome.
I am starting to feel legitimately bad for Kuroda. Its like the beginning of the season all over again….Kuroda has been pitching great but with 0 run support.
MARTIN!!! He hit it the same place he did vs. Toronto. Awesome.
Try his entire career.
RUSS!! YS special!
Coltrane.
RUSSEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! W/ TWO DAYS OF MUSSEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Huge HR, Mussell.
Get some more.
Russell!!!
Somewhere, Betty Lizard just orgasmed.
Hell, I was ecstatic over the walk!
(Orel and Shulman both have a man-crush on Tito, its embarrassing)
YEA BIG RUSS!!!
Old man in a Brosius jersey T.
Nice.
Yeah. Hilarious!
Hahahahahahah! I’ve been hanging out with Dodgers fans today.
That’s the speed I missed.
That was lovely. Now steal.
lol, Ichiro new he could beat that out and wanted to up his AVG and OBP instead of just OBP.
And now a baserunner as well.
Gotta get Ichiro home. Hopefully some more.
Classic ichiro baby
Was that Thomas Friedman sitting next to Paul Simon?
Yep.
Please steal and THEN bunt.
Teams don’t ever actually do this…It’s a great plan in theory but there are too many moving parts to have it actually work.
Umm, bunt?
Heartily disagree. No. No. No.
why the fuck is he bunting? let him steal on his own!!
Hiroki’s hit was perfect. Not threatening enough to take him out. Left him teetering…
Japanese person fail
Take the fucking bunt off jesus christ!
BUNT!?!?!?
Stop giving them outs! Nix has been hitting well lately!
UGH.
And he strikes out. In hindsight though.
Ichiro should steal here. Odds are he’s going off speed to try to get the K.
guess I was wrong…but he should definitely be on the move here, cause derek is swinging first pitch and he’s gonna hit it on the ground.
thanks for nothing Nix… terrible AB
Chase Headley.
Should have bunted.
Hopefully the righty coming in means Ichiro steals.
Better do it before Jeter grounds into the DP
If Girardi had any balls he would pinch hit Chavez.
Why the EF take the bunt off?
Because bunting is dumb as hell.
So is striking out on a high pitch and not advancing the runner
Don’t need to give away an out to advance Ichiro. He can advance himself.
RHP on the mound. Captain DP at the plate.
Please go on the first pitch, Ichiro.
Thanks for listening, Ichiro.
Ichiro should be able to steal 2nd with Albers in
this has DP written all over if Ichiro doesnt steal
great!
Dark Knight Mountain Dew is pretty damn good.
ICHIBAN!
Two chances to tie the game now.
Don’t fuck this up.
nice
now take third.
Ichiro!
YES Ichiro. Thank you.
Steal 3rd.
One batter too late. But so nice to see the steal as an option again.
Good throw by Sweeney
thank god Thompson didn’t do another shitty send and get Ichiro thrown out by 20 feet
awesome… another hit with RISP that doesnt score a run
now we are a DP away from not scoring
Holy fucking shit.
How many times is that this week that a base hit didn’t score the runner from second?
Not the fault of the hitter at all. It’s just fucking annoying by now.
And more terrible luck with RISP.
Classic hitting by Jeter there.
Jeter should steal 2nd here. No way they throw through.
In hindsight, holding Ichiro was smart. That was a damn good throw to home.
Squeeze bunt plz!!!!!! #AngelsBaseball #AllahAybar #RallyMonkey
I’m for the squeeze here too but can Grandy even bunt?
alright! we just got rid of Albers, the bear.
Of all the times for Kurtis to strike out, this sure as fuck isn’t one of them.
ot but the mens 400m relay is on and always exciting
Just get it in the air Grandy
not like that
Robbie thompson please die. Fuck ichiro can score on that.
Probably not thought, which makes it smart.
No, bad call!
They keep a stat for everything.
So there has to be a stat that measures number of hits with RISP that DON’T score runs.
Because seriously, we’ve had a ton.
awesome choke job by Grandy..
Not a strikeout, but just as worthless an AB.
Criminy.
Well that was terrible.
Teix time to continue your hot-hitting ways.
Granderson just having a terrific series
He did have a Grand Slam in the first game.
Jeter should’ve taken off for second the second he knew the throw was going through.
Fucking typical.
Fuck that shit
Fuck
Unbelievable.
Augh!
Pathetic
Tex…Grandy…that was awful.
Everything sucks.
Pathetic. RISPfail at its finest.
That is your 2012 New York Yankees. Terrible.
Which explains the 60-40 record.
The team isn’t terrible, the RISP is, and that inning was another example of it.
Who gives a shit if they’re winning games?
Or one of the best teams in the league? You sound spoiled.
Ugly ass inning.
Ground ball to right field should score ichiro other teams like rays and angels go automaticly to homr from second or first to third. Girardi and thompson kill rallys with this dont lose shit.
They kill rallies by not getting a runner thrown out at the plate?
You should apply to be a MLB third base coach.
did you see the throw? Ichiro would have been dead in the water. The ball was hit hard and the outfielder got to it quickly, had momentum and it wasn’t that deep. And yes the Rays send runners like crazy and do you see where they are? The Yankees way is better, the proof is in the record.
That’s fucking ridiculous. Less than 2 outs with a speedy runner on third in a 1 run game and your 2 and 3 hitters up and you can’t get the run across.
That’s a losing recipe.
RISP has to normalize eventually, right?
It feels like it won’t.
Their RISP was actually pretty scorching during the stretch when they were winning most every day. Most people only notice it when it’s failing.
same old story. a broken record. ba risp the usual.. grandy at least did not strike out for about the 123rd time..
joke….this offense is avg……nice pitch nix swung at, maybe he would have swung at it if it was going to the backstop.
grandy with 58 rbi/s because the guy strikes out a god awful amount…….
andruw jones charm is waring off fast. can the guy lose 10 pounds and give a crap?
You kids get off my damn lawn!!! *shakes fist*
You tell it like it is Stuart. The rest of these fools wear Yankees tinted glasses, but you see through all the bullshit.
stuart <3
Painful.
Kuroda had been brilliant tonight. a few to many base runners, but the two-seamers have been keeping the ball on the ground.
Don’t you dare put Soriano in if they tie it. Go with D-Rob.
Closers in a tie game almost always result in the other team scoring…I don’t know why.
Another quality start by Kuroda…wish the offense would just show up and back him up.
Can’t say this enough: Kuroda has been more than I could have expected and more.
Kuroda is definitely having Dodgers flashbacks
Six outs left to tie this game or, hopefully, take the lead.
Kuroda pitched great tonight. It would be a crime for him to take an L.
even an ND would be a shame.
Hiroki you deserve better.
nice quick 8th. win this for hiroki guys, c’mon.
This offense needs a shot in the arm. I was hoping for Justin Upton or Shin Soo Choo and got a washed up Ichiro. I’m not liking our chances in the playoffs with this offense. There’s no such thing as too many homers but when most of your hits are home runs it’s a problem. Our pitching is not what made us lose in the ALDS vs. the Tigers, it was our pitiful hitting with RISP and in general. The middle of the order isn’t putting fear in the opposing pitchers. Cano is hack happy and will swing at all pitches, high or low and Tex is up and down.
“when most of your hits are home runs it’s a problem.”
You just can’t make gems like this up.
Lol
Fans of other teams wish they could bitch about our offensive problems.
if there offense was remotely competent and close to what it has been the last few years they would have 68 wins or more.
their pitching has carried this team the whole year.
Well, I’d have to think the offense will be improving now that ARod isn’t around to drag it down.
Yeah, top OPS in the majors and 5th in run scored and it’s all the pitching.
*shakes fist*
yet according to the MSM we don’t have a legitimate number 2 guy.
This is just revolting to watch. I don’t care that they are 20 over .500.
It’s like the vintage Orioles of the naughties. Except it’s worse.
REALLY??!!!!! A base hit doesnt score Ichiro from second???!!! WTF? Don’t they watch their own team? Worst in baseball with runners in scoring position! Plus whats up with letting ?nix swing? Manager and third base coach deserve the loss in this game.
…because he would have been thrown out by a mile?
Better chance of scoring than on a pop up and ground out if we are using hindsight. wouldnt you agree? Let me say again WOST TEAM IN MLB WITH RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION!
Great job using hindsight. That is how to address a problem.
The Yankees aren’t even the worst team in their own division with RISP.
Really?? Stats please.
http://www.fangraphs.com/leade.....;sort=20,d
Rays and O’s are worse.
I am shocked. Thanks for the enlightenment. Last time I checked they were batting like .190 with RISP.
This argument is beyond ridiculous.
How much longer is Girardi going to have Granderson bat 2nd vs leftys leaving a gaping hole late in games and an easy pitching change for the opposing team. How he bats ahead of Cano and Swisher vs leftys is hard to explain. Lastly how many late rallys are we going to have to watch our best hitter not get up because Girardi won’t move Cano to the 3 hole, it’s ridiculous. Now we get him leading off again Just put Cano 3rd and leave him there instead of jerking him around among 3rd 4th and 5th.
Because he’s been better than Cano and Swisher vs. Lefties?
You can stick those stats where the sun don’t shine. Cano’s our best hitter period, bat him ahead of Grandy vs leftys.
Could not be any slower..
That’s what happens when you take your time out of the box cano.
Yep, he loses all those close plays out of the box.
Cano and Boras are going to have a lot of explaining to do in contract talks when the Yankees bring up his numbers hitting with RISP.
I highly doubt that.
Holy fuck Swisher.
Right over the middle of the plate.
Way to take a hanging breaking ball right down the middle.
Awful… swing the goddamn bat. That was not nasty, that was a breaking ball in the middle of the fucking plate.
Guys they are 8 games ahead in the division.
STOP BITCHING!
Bravo, Greg. I feel like this is something I normally say to you.
it’ll never happen Greg…
Whew…Grandy caught it.
I’m not a major league hitter, and I also get the benefit of seeing it from behind the pitcher…but Swish gave up on that ball way to early.
I don’t think many ml hitters would swing at the last tail on the expected pitch movement. If it was gonna be a strike, it would have to cut in the side of the plate.
Extra base hit.
Score this motherfucker!
Andruw ran into one.
Pinch runner?
Jones was chugging so slowly to second, I was afraid he was gonna be out.
lol, i thought i was only one worried about that.
Jones is teh awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Andruw’s legs still get him to second. That’s why his knees are in there.
yay, another opportunity to fail with RISP… let’s see how they blow this one!
Well, time for a greedy wish:
More Mussell!
Guess who is going to be left at second? HINT: initials A.J.
Burnett?
LOL!!!!!! No he got left in PITT!!! ps good for him!
By the way has anyone figured out where Aceves found 2-3 MPH on his fastball? Because he didn’t throw that hard as a Yankee.
Swish swinging at ball four again.
Pena pinch run please
No chance he’d use Ibanez here?
Pitch hit Ibanez?
You gotta think if Bobby V gets fired after this season, he’ll probably never get another managerial job again.
He still has to manage the Miami Marlins before his managerial career is officially over.
PH Ibanez.
Being wrong is awesome!
Ph ibanez run pena
RUSSELL THE MUSCLE.
Russ Mart!!!
MARTIN!!!!!!
RUSS IS BACK!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot believe my eyes.
I think I see frogs falling from the sky.
OK by me.
RUSS!! One man army tonight!
COLTRANEEEEEEEEEEEEE
YES YES YES
Russell!!!!!!
Mussell delivers again!
Russel Martin coming through with a late clutch RBI? That can’t be right….
Amazing
That one was payback for shit risp fail.
Gotta say, Woo! for Russell and Andruw!
I have never (well almost never) been so happy to be wrong!
Russ my god. Put us on ya back man.
Ichiro homaruna!
Don’t stop now boys.
FUCK YOU TROLLS!!!!! Russell says FUCK YOU!
Ichiro wants to hit a HR right here.
What the fuck is with Russell Martin today? Did he forget who he was?
Nice arm by Ellsbury.
OHPLEEZOHPLEEZOHPLEEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!
COME ON ICHIRO-SAN
Well, now a patented Ichiro hit puts the Yankees ahead.
Please don’t lose this game in the top of the 9th now.
What in the blue hell is Orel talking about?
comon Ichiro.. that’s weak
Fuck.
And ESPN needs to stop using that behind-the-plate camera. Seriously, that thing just sucks.
Robertson please
God…what an awful camera angle. I had no idea where that ball was in regards to the strikezone, or after it was put in play.
Loved that on deck view of Crawford’s catch of Ichiro’s fader.
Anybody know (or know how to find) the historical stats on the home team winning a tie game going into the ninth inning?
Wish I had a link, but I did read something a few years back that said that if a game goes tied into the bottom of the ninth or extras, because of things the visiting team has to do to avoid even one run scoring, the odds shift into the favor of the home team.
What kind of camera angle was THAT? It half-looked like it was going to fall in; the normal shot, I think I’d have known it was a routine fly ball.
Awesome . . . Soriano. Great.
Soriano facing Crawford, Pedroia, and Gonzalez. This won’t end well.
We’re going to see Padilla vs. Teix again
Tex will hit a walkoff HR and trot backwards around the bases.
ha, I wanna see that.
Stuart Scott’s suit fabric looks like fucking pajamas.
Really don’t want to see Soriano here man.
I love Sori but he has been sloppy of late c’mon MFIKY!
Not again
Mfiky is not made for tie games
you’re onto something here, but what does mfiky mean?
Ichiro looks like he’s a 38 year old player. I don’t know why everyone is expecting him to hit like he’s 28. Argh. When will Cashman make an impact trade that doesn’t end up sucking?
Nick Swisher.
Curtis Granderson.
Soriano gtfo
STOP. SCREWING. AROUND. SORIANO.
here we go again…
Great start there Soriano…get your shit together dude.
See what the hell im talking about?
OY!
Get Sori the fuck out of there already!
here we go… Joe should have gone to D-Rob.
Soriano is an asshole.
Haha. Wow. This game is lost.
Girardi hasn’t figured our how to manage tie games in the ninth yet. It’s his only glaring bullpwn usage flaw.
He does it the same way pretty much every other manager does it.
(Not that that’s necessarily a good thing)
Stop putting Soriano in non-save situations. He always implodes! Eppley or D-Rob would’ve been better options.
Grandy caught that!
Is this site slow for anyone else?
Working on it.
Spillover thread?
Not sure if it’ll work, but it’s worth a try.
Me.
top of the 9th, runner on first, second batter with a high-fly to center…. anyone else get scared?
Deja Vu all over again
Nice camera work ESPN
Good job ESPN
speaking of camera angles!!!LOL
So Kuroda at 102 pitches was done?
I know it’s the 9th inning, but he seemed under control.
YES puts all these others to shame!
Is the site lagging terribly for anybody else, or is it just me?
was pretty bad for a min or two but it’s working fine for me now.
But seriously with this amateur camera work…..
If Teix is a LH 1B, Crawford is out.
l0lz
Great pitching Sori! Time to win this thing
TEX BACKWARD TROT, HAHA. Didn’t somebody just mention wanting to see that?
Tex did that with style lol
Wow. That was a lot easier than expected.
Come-on, it’s been a while since we had a walk-off. Don’t make Martin do everything.
Have the Yankees had a walk-off this year? It doesn’t feel like it…but it feels like it’s time for one!
Against the Mutts
Russel Martin against the Mets.
They’ve had 2 – Walkoff wild pitch against the Tigers and Martin’s walkoff HR against the Mets.
Can’t believe the Sux didn’t have Crawford steal there.
Teixeira should have moonwalked back to first base after fielding that grounder.
Hahahahaha! YESSSS!!!!!!!
the shots of Bobby V. after the Sox do anything really make me appreciate Tito. I didn’t like him when he was managing the Sox but I could respect him. Bobby V. looks like such a clown every time the show him.
Bobby V is a clown. Plain and simple.
Phew!
Martin is saving his season with a number of clutch hits regardless of how lousy his batting avg is.
I’m never going to stop saying it, because I get to watch so few games…that behind the catcher angle is the worst.
the strikezone is huge for red sox pitchers tonight
I’m calling walk off win here.
Why is everyone so anti-Soriano coming in with a tie game in the ninth? Recently he hasn’t had his stuff but he was just fine tonight..
I don’t mind him but I would’ve preferred to save him.
Who is this asshole that’s overrating the Sox right now on the broadcast?
10th time one of the broadcasters have said “If Lester and Beckett were Lester and Beckett the Sox would be good.” Shit we get it.
I don’t believe Aceves is imbedded anymore, or he’s deep under cover, hiding behind a wicked fb.
