Game 30: Hit the Road

RHP Zach Nuding and RHP Joel De La Cruz have been promoted from Double-A Trenton to Triple-A Scranton, according to Nick Peruffo. RHP Caleb Cotham was sent the other way in a corresponding move. In other news, John DeMarzo profiled RHP Branden Pinder, who is off to a strong start with Double-A Trenton. He could emerge as a bullpen option at the big league level, likely next season.

Triple-A Scranton (14-6 loss to Norfolk)

  • RF Ramon Flores: 1-5
  • 2B Scott Sizemore: 0-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • SS Dean Anna: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 3B Zelous Wheeler: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI — 7-for-17 (.412) since coming off the DL
  • LF Adonis Garcia: 3-4, 2 R, 1 3B, 3 RBI
  • RHP Zach Nuding: 3 IP, 11 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 0/6 GB/FB — 46 of 78 pitches were strikes (59%) … welp, you aren’t in Double-A anymore
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 21 of 27 pitches were strikes (78%) … 16/7 K/BB in 14 innings
  • LHP Cesar Cabral: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1/3 GB/FB — only 17 of 41 pitches were strikes (41%) … last 25 batters faced: 12 outs, four hits, six walks, three hat batsmen

Double-A Trenton (6-4 win over Richmond) they pounded Giants RHP Kyle Crick (five runs in three innings), who is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball

  • CF Mason Williams: 0-3, 1 R, 2 BB — threw a runner out at the plate, which is great, but at some point he has to start hitting
  • SS Brendan Ryan: 2-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • LF Ben Gamel: 3-5, 1 R, 1 RBI — 11-for-34 (.324) in his last seven games
  • C Gary Sanchez: 0-4, 2 K, 1 E (catcher interference)
  • 1B Kyle Roller: 2-2, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • RHP Branden Pinder: 1 IP, zeroes, 3 K — 12 of 13 pitches were strikes

High-A Tampa Game One (7-4 loss to Brevard County) completion of Thursday’s game, which was suspended due to rain after the third inning

  • CF Jake Cave & SS Cito Culver: both 1-4, 1 K — Culver got caught stealing
  • 3B Eric Jagielo: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • DH Dante Bichette Jr.: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI — second homer of the season
  • C Peter O’Brien: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 PB — ninth homer of the year … coming into Saturday, three teams in the 12-team Florida State League had nine homers or less total

  • LHP Eric Wooten: 3 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1/4 GB/FB — started the original game on Thursday

High-A Tampa Game Two (6-2 win over Brevard County in seven innings)

  • SS Cito Culver: 1-4
  • DH Eric Jagielo: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — nice day
  • 3B Dante Bichette Jr.: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K — also a nice day
  • RF Peter O’Brien: 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B — guess what? nice day for him too
  • 2B Angelo Gumbs: 1-3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB
  • LHP Daniel Camarena: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 Balk, 7/2 GB/FB — picked a runner off first and was forced out of the game following a long rain delay

Low-A Charleston (6-5 win over Delmarva)

  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 SB — had been in a 3-for-21 (.143) slump
  • DH Tyler Wade: 1-4, 2 K
  • RF Aaron Judge: 0-4, 1 K
  • 1B Mike Ford: 3-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 E (fielding) — Princeton guy is hitting .326/.398/.453
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — first homer of the season
  • LF Michael O’Neill: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 2 SB — had three hits total in his previous 22 at-bats (.136)
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 0-2, 1 R, 1 BB
  • LHP Ian Clarkin: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 42 of 61 pitches were strikes (69%), plus he picked a runner off first … season debut for the next great Yankees left-hander, who was the third of last year’s three first rounders couldn’t have gone much better
  • LHP Omar Luis: 2.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 HB, 6/1 GB/FB — 35 of 55 pitches were strikes (64%) … season debut for the Cuban defector, who was the team’s last big international signing before the new spending restrictions were put in place ($2.5M)
