Mailbag: Free Agents, Austin, McCann, Sanchez, Gregorius

OF Blake Rutherford has been promoted to Rookie Pulaski, according to multiple reports. Those eight games in the Gulf Coast League were just a tune-up, apparently.

Triple-A Scranton (2-0 win over Gwinnett)

  • CF Ben Gamel: 2-5, 1 2B, 2 K — 19-for-46 (.413) in his last ten games
  • C Gary Sanchez: 0-4, 1 K — between the Futures Game and Triple-A All-Star Game, he’s traveled from Scranton to San Diego to Charlotte to Gwinnett in the last six days
  • DH Tyler Austin: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 1B Ike Davis: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K — second homer with the RailRiders
  • RF Cesar Puello: 1-4, 1 K
  • LF Jake Cave: 0-3, 2 K, 1 CS, 1 HBP
  • RHP Chad Green: 8 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 8/6 GB/FB — 77 of 102 pitches were strikes (75%) … we know he can dominate at this level
  • RHP Kirby Yates: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 1/0 GB/FB — ten of 19 pitches were strikes

Double-A Trenton (4-2 loss to Reading)

  • SS Tyler Wade & CF Dustin Fowler: both 1-4, 1 K — Wade scored a run
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — believe it or not, that’s his first homer with Trenton … it’s his 11th homer of the season overall, a new career high
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 0-3, 1 E (missed catch)
  • RHP Ronald Herrera: 4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 58 of 85 pitches were strikes (68%)
  • RHP Travis Hissong: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 5/2 GB/FB — 32 of 55 pitches were strikes (58%) … not the best night, but he has a 57/6 K/BB in 48.1 innings

High-A Tampa (13-6 win over Fort Myers)

  • CF Mason Williams: 1-3, 1 2B — left the game after hitting a double in the fourth, which probably isn’t a good sign
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 2-6, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 E (fielding) — 14-for-39 (.359) in his last ten games
  • RF Trey Amburgey: 1-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 3 K — 7-for-34 (.206) in eight games with Tampa
  • SS Abi Avelino: 1-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB — he’s played every game at short since SS Jorge Mateo’s suspension … I’m a bit surprised they haven’t given Thairo some time there
  • 1B Kevin Cornelius & 3B Vince Conde: both 3-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 1 K — Cornelius scored a run
  • LHP James Reeves: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 HB, 4/6 GB/FB — 49 of 74 pitches were strikes (66%) … 78/22 K/BB in 60.1 innings for last year’s tenth rounder
  • RHP Jordan Foley: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 17 of 28 pitches were strikes (61%) … 60/23 K/BB in 43.2 innings
  • RHP Gabe Encinas: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 3/0 GB/FB — 24 of 43 pitches were strikes (56%)

  • SS Hoy Jun Park: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 CS
  • 3B Mandy Alvarez: 2-4, 1 RBI — 32-for-83 (.386) during his 19-game hitting streak
  • C Luis Torrens: 1-4
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 0-3
  • RHP Christian Morris: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 5/8 GB/FB — 54 of 81 pitches were strikes (67%) … 63/17 K/BB in 69 innings for last year’s 33rd rounder
  • RHP Jose Mesa Jr.: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 13 of 21 pitches were strikes (62%)

Short Season Staten Island (2-1 loss to Hudson Valley)

  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 1-5, 3 K — threw a runner out at second
  • 2B Nick Solak: 1-3, 1 BB — five strikeouts and eleven walks in 19 games for this year’s second rounder
  • 3B Drew Bridges & SS Angel Aguilar: 0-4, 2 K
  • RHP Austin DeCarr: 3 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 27 of 43 pitches were strikes (63%) … 8/9 K/BB in 13.2 innings back from Tommy John surgery
  • RHP Taylor Widener: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 3/0 GB/FB — 33 of 48 pitches were strikes (63%) … 15/3 K/BB in ten innings for this year’s 12th round pick

  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 2-4, 1 E (fielding)

  • RHP Miguel Yajure: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 6/5 GB/FB — 18/1 K/BB in 19.2 innings for the 18-year-old

Rookie GCL Yanks West (6-5 win over GCL Tigers West)

  • CF Pablo Olivares: 0-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
