Thoughts on what was supposed to be an off-day

Triple-A Scranton‘s game was rained out. Their best-of-five first round postseason series with Lehigh Valley (Phillies) will simply be pushed back a day, so Game One is tomorrow.

Double-A Trenton (4-1 loss to Binghamton) they trail the best-of-five first round postseason series one game to none

  • CF Jeff Hendrix: 0-4, 2 K
  • SS Thairo Estrada: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • LF Clint Frazier: 0-3, 3 K — played six innings in the field as scheduled in his first rehab game
  • DH Garrett Cooper: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K — this is already his tenth day on the rehab assignment
  • 2B Nick Solak: 0-4, 2 K
  • 1B Ryan McBroom: 1-4, 1 K
  • RHP Dillon Tate: 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 40 of 73 pitches were strikes (55%) … rough start in the postseason opener
  • RHP Jose Mesa Jr.: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 5/4 GB/FB — 41 of 59 pitches were strikes (59%) … Jose Table II has been ridiculously good for weeks now

High-A Tampa Game One (4-1 loss to Dunedin) this was Game Two of their best-of-three first round postseason series … the series was tied at one game apiece after this game

  • 2B Hoy Jun Park: 1-4, 1 K
  • SS Kyle Holder & LF Trey Amburgey: both 0-4
  • CF Estevan Florial: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB — 4-for-8 with a homer in two postseason games so far
  • C Donny Sands: 0-3
  • RF Alex Palma: 1-3 — threw a runner out at second
  • RHP Albert Abreu: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 5/4 GB/FB — 42 of 71 pitches were strikes (59%) … first time since he went longer than five innings since April 25th due to the injuries

High-A Tampa Game Two (5-3 loss to Dunedin) this was the decisive winner-take-all Game Three of the best-of-three series, so Dunedin is the Florida State League co-champions with Palm Beach … the FSL canceled the Championship Series and played Games Two and Three the same day due to Hurricane Irma

  • 2B Hoy Jun Park & SS Kyle Holder: both 0-5, 1 K — Holder scored a run
  • LF Trey Amburgey: 1-4, 1 RBI
  • CF Estevan Florial: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K — he probably should’ve hit higher than fifth in the postseason
  • C Donny Sands: 1-4, 1 2B
  • RF Alex Palma: 0-3
  • RHP Erik Swanson: 6 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 4/5 GB/FB — 61 of 88 pitches were strikes (69%) … couldn’t ask for much more in a winner-take-all game

Low-A Charleston (4-1 loss to Greenville) they trail the best-of-three first round postseason series one game to none

  • LF Carlos Vidal: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K — pretty much the only offense
  • SS Diego Castillo: 0-4
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 0-2, 1 BB
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 0-3, 1 BB
  • DH Dermis Garcia: 0-3, 3 K
  • 2B Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-3
  • RHP Freicer Perez: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K, 3/4 GB/FB — 60 of 80 pitches were strikes (75%) … he did his job … no one else did theirs

Short Season Staten Island (2-1 win over Brooklyn in six innings) completed early due to rain … their regular season ends tomorrow and this win clinched the division title … they clinched a postseason spot a few days ago

  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 0-2, 1 K
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 0-2, 1 K — starting up rehab from the shoulder injury … now that the Yankees have Erik Kratz, they might just leave Higashioka with whatever affiliate makes the longest postseason run so he can play … dude has only 98 plate appearances this season
  • RF Timmy Robinson: 0-1, 1 RBI
  • RHP Juan De Paula: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HB, 5/3 GB/FB — 47 of 83 pitches were strikes (57%) … 19-year-old finishes the regular season with a 2.90 ERA and a 53/25 K/BB in 62 innings … he came over in the Ben Gamel trade last year

Rookie Pulaski‘s regular season is over. They beat Bluefield in their first round postseason series and will play Elizabethton (Twins) in the best-of-three Appalachian League Championship Series. That series begins tomorrow.

Rookie GCL Yanks East (5-4 win over GCL Nationals) they won the best-of-three GCL Championship Series two games to one, so congrats to them … here’s the team photo after the game

  • CF Robert Javier: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K — got picked off first
  • SS Jose Devers: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E (throwing) — went 5-for-16 (.313) in their four postseason games
  • LF Raymundo Moreno: 2-4
  • DH Miguel Flames: 0-3, 1 K — he was sent over from GCL Yanks West for this game … I’m pretty sure OF Canaan Smith got hurt yesterday and was unavailable to play today, so Miggy Fire was the injury replacement … that would explain why Smith left yesterday’s game early
  • 3B Jose Carrera: 1-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB — 22-year-old undrafted free agent out of Manhattan is listed at 5-foot-2, and he’s out here socking dingers in title games
  • RF Jhon Moronta: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI — drove in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth (here’s video)
  • LHP Tony Hernandez: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 0/1 GB/FB
  • LHP Woody Bryson: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 3/0 GB/FB — they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, then Hernandez and Bryson had them down 4-3 by the third
  • RHP Luis Rijo: 5.1 IP, zeroes, 7 K, 3/3 GB/FB — 16 up, 16 down on his 19th birthday
  • RHP Shawn Semple: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2/0 GB/FB — this year’s 11th rounder stranded the bases loaded in the ninth to clinch the championship … he had a 1.00 ERA and a 22/1 K/BB in 18 regular season innings

Rookie GCL Yanks West‘s season is over. They did not qualify for the postseason.
