That was weird. Didn’t even feel like a real game. The Yankees and Nationals completed their May 15th suspended game Monday afternoon and Washington won the mad dash to the finish 5-3. I’m not writing two full recaps in one day and the second game starts in like five minutes anyway, so let’s bullet point this recap:
- Previously on Yankees Baseball: The suspended game resumed with the score tied 3-3 in the middle of the sixth inning. How did they get there? Masahiro Tanaka allowed one run in the first (Anthony Rendon solo homer) and two runs in the second (Andrew Stevenson single, Pedro Severino double) for an early 3-0 deficit. The Yankees rallied to tie the game 3-3 thanks to Tyler Austin, who is now in Triple-A. He hit a two-run homer against Gio Gonzalez in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Yankees had eleven baserunners (six hits, four walks, one hit-by-pitch) in six innings before the rain.
- An
EarlyLate Deficit: Didn’t take long for the Nationals to take (or retake, I guess) the lead. Three batters. Chad Green struck out Bryce Harper, allowed a single to Rendon, then served up a monster two-run homer to Juan Soto. He put a 3-1 fastball on a damn tee. Second time in a week the 19-year-old beat the Yankees with a late-inning home run. At least he’s in the National League and we don’t have to see him regularly. - Blown Chances: The Yankees had opportunities to score Monday afternoon. Gary Sanchez doubled with one out in the seventh, then was doubled off second on Didi Gregorius’ fly ball to left. Greg Bird doubled and Gleyber Torres singled with two outs in the eighth, but Aaron Hicks grounded out to short. And that was that.
- Leftovers: Chasen Shreve wiggled in and out of trouble in the seventh and Adam Warren worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Aside from Green, all the usual late-inning relievers will be available for the second game … and that’s it? Feels like not a whole lot happened Monday afternoon.
Here are the box score, video highlights, and updated standings. Here’s our Bullpen Workload page. The Yankees and Nationals will continue this one-and-a-half-header with the makeup game of their May 16th rainout a little later tonight. Sonny Gray and Erick Fedde are the scheduled starters.
(Maybe the WPA graph will update at some point. Maybe not.)
