Baseball America posted a list of the youngest players in each league. Most notably, 2B Gleyber Torres is the second youngest player (and youngest position player) in the American League and RHP Deivi Garcia is the third youngest player (and youngest pitcher) in the High-A Florida State League.
Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (6-1 win over Buffalo)
- LF Trey Amburgey: 1-5, 1 2B
- 3B Gio Urshela: 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K — 4-for-9 with two doubles in two games
- 1B Ryan McBroom: 1-5, 1 R, 3 K
- C Kyle Higashioka: 0-4, 1 K
- SS Cliff Pennington: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K —signed this afternoon and he was in the lineup tonight
- LHP Nestor Cortes: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K, 3/3 GB/FB — 56 of 75 pitches were strikes (75%) … this dude has been pitching basically non-stop since last March … he’s gone from Spring Training to the regular season to the postseason to winter ball to Spring Training to the regular season again
- RHP Joe Harvey: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 11 of 16 pitches were strikes (69%) … I’m setting the over/under on his MLB debut at July 1st … he’s on the 40-man roster, remember
Double-A Trenton Thunder (11-1 loss to Erie) this is their Opening Day, so here’s the full lineup and pitching staff as per DotF tradition
- SS Kyle Holder: 1-4, 1 K
- 2B Brandon Wagner: 0-3, 1 BB — curious to see how many starts he gets at second base this year
- 1B Chris Gittens: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
- LF Ben Ruta: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS
- RF Jhalan Jackson: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E (throwing) — year three in Trenton
- 3B Angel Aguilar: 0-4, 1 R, 2 K
- C Francisco Diaz: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K
- DH Rashad Crawford: 1-3, 1 2B, RBI — my man played for Tampa last night and Trenton tonight
- CF Jeff Hendrix: 0-3, 2 K
- RHP Trevor Stephan: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 1 HB, 1/1 GB/FB — 45 of 76 pitches were strikes (59%) … ran his pitch count up in a hurry, huh?
- RHP Nick Green: 2.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 1 WP, 5/0 GB/FB, 1 E (pickoff) — 33 of 58 pitches were strikes (57%) … terrible outing, but at least he’s back on that ground ball grind … he didn’t get stretched out in Spring Training as a Rule 5 Draft pick with the Diamondbacks, so I assume the Yankees will have Green piggyback for a bit until he’s ready to start
- RHP Kaleb Ort: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 25 of 36 pitches were strikes (69%)
- RHP Will Carter: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 2/1 GB/FB — nine of 14 pitches were strikes (64%) … there was a time not too long ago where he was with Trenton as a starter and looked like someone who could help the Yankees at some point … now he’s throwing mop-up innings in Double-A blowouts
High-A Tampa Tarpons (5-3 loss to Lakeland)
- CF Pablo Olivares: 1-2, 1 R, 3 BB, 1 SB — excited the personal fave has picked up right where he left off last year before a pitch broke his hand and ended his season in July
- SS Diego Castillo: 0-5, 1 K
- 2B Oswaldo Cabrera: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS
- 1B Dermis Garcia: 0-4, 3 K
- RF Isiah Gilliam: 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 E (fielding) — he was with Tampa last season, so a hot start could land him in Trenton in short order
- RHP Deivi Garcia: 3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 9 K — 44 of 70 pitches were strikes (63%) … tough outing overall, but ten outs and nine strikeouts is pretty cool
Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (6-1 win over Columbia)
- CF Brandon Lockridge: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K — threw a runner out at second
- RF Josh Stowers: 3-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB — heck of a game after going hitless on Opening Day yesterday
- C Josh Breaux: 1-3, 2 RBI, 1 K — he was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh, which probably isn’t a good sign
- LF Isaiah Pasteur: 0-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 SB, 1 CS
- RHP Matt Sauer: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 4/2 GB/FB — 45 of 72 pitches were strikes (63%) … not terribly efficient, but a fine season debut
- RHP Shawn Semple: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K, 1 HB, 2/2 GB/FB — 47 of 65 pitches were strikes (72%) … great outing, but don’t read too much into it because it’s a *shades* small Semple size
The Short Season Staten Island Yankees, Rookie Pulaski Yankees, and two Rookie Gulf Coast League Yankees teams begin play in June.
