In case you missed it earlier, the first few 2018 draft signings are starting to trickle in. Here are some links and notes to check out before we get to standings update:

  • Scouting director Damon Oppenheimer told Brandon Kuty that RHP Clarke Schmidt is nearing a return to game action soon. He’s working his way back from Tommy John surgery. Also, RHP Matt Sauer is going to join an affiliate soon, possibly Low-A Charleston.
  • Baseball Prospectus (subs. req’d) wrote about notable prospects who were promoted in May. RHP Erik Swanson and 3B Dermis Garcia are among them. “The hit tool could take off once he tones down some mechanical inconsistencies. … A combination of barrel awareness and power potential is the big draw for Garcia,” says the write-up.
  • Triple-A Scranton manager Bobby Mitchell gave Brendan Kuty some updates and scouting reports on his players, including OF Clint Frazier, LHP Justus Sheffield, and RHP Chance Adams. “This kid has got an arm like you wouldn’t believe … You could see him being a guy that can go up there, even now, and pitch well for them,” said Mitchell of RHP Cody Carroll.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (5-4 loss to Durham) they’re 26-32 and six games back in the division

  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-5, 1 K
  • CF Clint Frazier: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K — here’s video of the double … 17-for-47 (.362) with five doubles, one triple, and one homer in his last eleven games
  • 3B Brandon Drury: 0-1, 1 BB, 1 K — he and manager Bobby Mitchell were ejected for arguing balls and strikes … here’s video of the ejections
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
  • LF-3B Ronald Torreyes: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K — 7-for-36 (.194) in nine games since being sent down
  • DH Billy McKinney: 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB — back-to-back games with a homer and five homers in his last nine games
  • RHP Chance Adams: 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 9 K, 1 HR, 4/1 GB/FB — 62 of 100 pitches were strikes … shrugs

High-A Tampa Tarpons (4-1 win over St. Lucie) they’re 35-28 and 2.5 games back in the division

Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (4-2 win over Columbia) they’re 29-29 and seven games back in the division
