DotF: McKinney homers, Adams struggles in Scranton’s win

July 6, 2018 by Mike Leave a Comment

Game 85: North of the Border
Blue Jays 6, Yankees 2: Another Sonny Gray Dud

The 2018 Futures Game rosters were officially announced earlier today. LHP Justus Sheffield will be the Yankees’ only representative. OF Estevan Florial might’ve gone had he not gotten hurt.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (3-2 win over Pawtucket)

  • CF Clint Frazier: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI — he’s back up here now that Tyler Wade is in the big leagues
  • 1B Billy McKinney: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (missed catch) — third homer in his last nine games … second straight game at first base, though I suspect that has to do with 1B Tyler Austin (back), 1B Mike Ford (oblique), and 1B Ryan McBroom (foot) being banged up more than anything
  • RHP Chance Adams: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 4/5 GB/FB — 58 of 95 pitches were strikes (61%) … 4+ walks in three of his last four starts … 24.6 K% and 11.6 BB% this year after 22.3 K% and 9.6 BB% last year

Double-A Trenton Thunder (3-1 loss to Altoona)

  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-5, 1 K
  • RF Trey Amburgey: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • 1B Gosuke Katoh: 1-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • RHP Mike King: 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 10 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 6/3 GB/FB — 70 of 91 pitches were strikes (77%) … the batter he hit? a rehabbing Francisco Cervelli … 2.00 ERA and 97/18 K/BB in 94.1 innings this year … the Yankees got him from the Marlins in the Garrett Cooper/Caleb Smith roster shuffle trade over the winter

High-A Tampa Tarpons (4-1 loss to Lakeland in five innings) completed early due to rain

  • SS Diego Castillo: 0-2
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 1-2, 1 K
  • LF Isiah Gilliam: 0-2, 2 K
  • RF Steven Sensley: 1-2, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K — three homers in seven games with Tampa … his 13 homers are second most in the system (Wagner has 16)
  • RHP Garrett Whitlock: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 8/1 GB/FB — 51 of 74 pitches were strikes (69%) … only the second time in 16 starts this season that he allowed more than two runs … one earned run or less in 12 of 16 starts

Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (4-2 win over Augusta)

  • CF Pablo Olivares: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K
  • 2B Wilkerman Garcia: 2-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
  • SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 1B Dermis Garcia: 1-3, 2 RBI — seems like he’s kinda sorta starting to come around
  • RHP Miguel Yajure: 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 2 Balk, 4/4 GB/FB — 44 of 68 pitches were strikes (65%)

Short Season Staten Island Yankees (3-2 win over Hudson Valley)

  • DH Mike Ford: 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K — fourth rehab game for the oblique
  • RF Frederick Cuevas: 1-4, 2 K, 1 SB — got picked off second
  • 2B Kyle Gray: 0-3, 2 E (fielding, throwing)
  • RHP Matt Sauer: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 12/3 GB/FB — 58 of 85 pitches were strikes (68%) … only a 15.7 K% so far, though I suspect that’ll come up in short order … more importantly, he’s pitching very well
  • RHP Rodney Hutchison: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 22 of 27 pitches were strikes (81%) … pro debut for this year’s sixth rounder

Rookie Pulaski Yankees (6-5 loss to Bluefield in ten innings, walk-off style)

  • SS Oswald Peraza: 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • CF Everson Pereira: 2-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K — Baseball America said he hit eight homers in Extended Spring Training this year, so that’s ten homers total by July 6th for the 17-year-old
  • 2B Ezequiel Duran: 1-4, 1 3B, 1 K
  • 3B Nelson Gomez: 0-5, 2 K
  • C Saul Torres: 0-5, 1 R, 2 K
  • RHP Luis Rijo: 4.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 10/5 GB/FB — 64 of 83 pitches were strikes (77%)
  • RHP Justin Wilson: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 3/3 GB/FB — 26 of 44 pitches were strikes (59%) … pro debut for this year’s 23rd rounder, who returned to the mound following Tommy John surgery with Vanderbilt earlier this year … he’s got a chance to be a nice little prospect if the stuff bounces back all the way

The Rookie GCL Yankees East had a scheduled off-day.

Rookie GCL Yankees West (4-2 win over GCL Blue Jays)

  • DH Estevan Florial: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K — second rehab game following wrist surgery
  • RF Antonio Cabello: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B — 17-year-old is up to .400/.460/.756 with six doubles, two triples, two homers, four walks, and only six strikeouts in 12 games
  • SS Roberto Chirinos: 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 E (throwing)
  • CF Brandon Lockridge: 0-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HBP, 1 SB
  • LF Stanley Rosario: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI — 17-year-old is hitting .256/.347/.419 with six walks and seven strikeouts in 12 games
  • RHP Leonardo Pestana: 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 B, 2 K, 2 HB, 3/4 GB/FB — the Yankees signed the 19-year-old back in March
