Game 57: Just another night game in June
Dissecting Joba's starting debut

Incredibly slow and boring night in the minors (plus I’m prepping the draft bunker for the end of the week), so I’m not going to drag this out. Here are the box scores for AAA, AA, A+ and A-. The highlights:

  • Eric Duncan took an 0-fer and Phil Coke struggled in his first start at the AAA level.
  • David Robertson and JB Cox combined for 2.1 perfect innings.
  • Jose Tabata left after getting hit by a pitch in his first at-bat. He later complained.
  • Austin Jackson picked up a single and Eric Hacker was eh.
  • Mitch Hilligoss racked up only his seventh multi-hit game of the year.
  • Kevin Whelan walked 5 in an inning and a third.
  • Rob Semerano made his organizational debut by giving up 4 hits and 2 runs in an inning of work for Tampa. Yanks picked him up as a MiL free agent, and he’s no spring chicken. Just filler.
  • Bradley Suttle hit a solo job.
  • Jon Ortiz picked up another save, his 17th.

Nice to see Suttle back and hitting, and thanks for Charleston making sure the orginization got a win at some level

Hopefully Robertson is figuring out the BB

  • Chip

How long until Cox comes up to take Hawkin’s spot? He’s nothing more than a mop-up guy right now

No love for the two DSL squads or are they on the back burner because of the impending draft?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Always on the back burner. Not worth spending time to learn about guys until they are in the States in my opinion.

    • A.D.

DSL Yanks won 8-3 over the DSL O’s

      • A.D.

Crazy to look at the player’s birthday’s

  • E-ROC

How soon could we see Robertson or JB Cox in the big leagues?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Soon, later this month, but they’re only going to help so much. They’re not Joba, they won’t save the day.

      • A.D.

They don’t have as redic stuff as Joba, but Robertson does have a career 1.13 ERA and Cox a 1.85

So they could be pretty good, and presumably better than the bottom of our current pen

  • Rich

Right now, subtraction can help the pen as much as addition. Hawkins and Farnsworth, I’m looking at you. Actually, Farns may be able to contribute, but not in the 8th.

    • DaveM

I actually think that Farnsworth can really do well pitching in the 7th. I think his 8th inning failures are mental. He was doing real well in the 7th earlier this year. He hasn’t pitched worth crap since they announced the Joba starting thing.

  • Miles Roche

I’m perusing the DSL Yankees box score and i see that J Heredia and C Garcia pitched a couple of innings for the DSL Yankees2 squad and i’m like “WTF, when did the Yankees send down Jairo Heredia & Chris Garcia???”. . .

I was perplexed for a good 30 seconds until i clicked on their names. . .

  • Brian

Noel Castillo’s line tonight is great.

Check out the absolute retardedness of this mock draft.

The guy wrote Gordon where he meant Tim Beckham, and then left Gordon Beckham off the board completely. Then some random dudes named Jacob Thompson and Luke Burnett at 24 and 25. Thompson went in round 5 of the Sickels draft, and Burnett went…. Ummm he didn’t get drafted, as he was passed over 172 times.

Thompson has potential to be a solid MLB starter if he gets back to form from before this year

    • http://yankeesfuture.wordpress.com Pablo Zevallos

though, let me clarify, I don’t think he’s a 1st round talent at all.

    Here’s a more complete DotF:

What happened to Whelan? I remember when he was acquired as part of the Sheffield to Detroit trade and some analyst, somewhere wrote that he was looked upon as a future closer type. Now he’s struggling in low ball as a starter.

By the way, who was the third guy in that deal besides Whelan and Sanchez? The name escapes me at the moment.
