Game 68: Houston, we have problems

Tim Russert, baseball fan
Ajax goes deep, Laird keeps mashing

The Yanks go for two games over .500 for the umpteenth time this season, and do so against one time great Yankee Shawn Chacon. Joba’s set to throw 85-90 pitches tonight, which means he has a chance of seeing the 6th inning for the first time as a starter.

Thaaaaaa Yankees’ lineup:

1. Jeter, SS
2. Cano, 2B – you really can’t ask to hit in a better spot that between Jeter & Abreu, hopefully this gets him going
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Matsui, LF
6. Giambi, 1B
7. Posada, C
8. Melky, CF
9. Joba, SP – how sweet would it be if he hit one into the Crawford Boxes tonight? Think of the headlines … "Joba hits like Owings, except he’s good at pitching"

  • Frank

Maybe I’m being naive, but why is Johnny on the bench? Christ.

    • Chip

Now is a better time than most to give him a night off

  • Frank

I’ll clarify…instead of Matsui or Abreu.

  • George Kaplan

I saw the game earlier this year where Owings had two home runs….kid absolutely mashes. I looked back and saw his stats in college, was there ever any thought of playing him in the majors as something other than a pitcher?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Jay Bruce just hit a leadoff homer off Justin Masterson. As he rounded the bases he said “my prospect status makes your prospects status look like Tim Battle.”

  • joba

    jay bruce is daddy

  • LiveFromNewYork

People paid $2300.00 for a ticket to this??? Wow. I saw 2 games at the Ballpark in Arlington a few years ago when I was stranded in Fort Worth for a summer for work. Both Yankee games I went to were sold out and there were more Yankee fans in my sections (both games) than Ranger fans. Those Houston-ites must be psyched.

  • E-ROC

    Any predictions for tonight’s game?

  • LiveFromNewYork

Did Robbie walk???????????????????? Be still my heart.

    • Chip

Keep him up there if this is what it takes!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Good to see that Chacon hasn’t changed one bit.

    • LiveFromNewYork

I was just thinking the same thing. I saw him at the Stadium and wanted to unbolt my seat and throw it at the mound.

  • LiveFromNewYork

    Alright Arod.

  • LiveFromNewYork

Shawn is not getting squeezed. He just sucks.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

    Yay Joba.

  • E-ROC

6 pitches were all that Joba needed to get out of the first inning. Now that’s cool.

  • JIM

finally a quick 1st inning for joba

  • http://blogginthebombers.wordpress.com Matt

Can’t wait to see Joba bat! I’m guessing a homer!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

    Nice play by Fat Elvis.

  • Chip

Well at least Joba can’t be forced to bunt if he leads off :)

  • Chip

And on pitch number 11 he finally throws a slider, this is gonna be a great outing

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Check out Guiliani behind the dish.

  • E-ROC

The Astros are making it easy for Joba. Keep it up!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I love that Joba’s pissed about striking out. Most pitcher’s are just “oh well, that’s not my job anyway.”

    • Chip

Hey, he tried working the count, smart move when Chacon has thrown more balls than strikes

  • Chip

Pulled the deuce out! I can’t wait for Joba’s comments on that after the game

  • pete

19 pitches through 2 innings, noice.
cano’s wishing he were back home after that out

  • Chip

Wow, gameday just registered a 90 mph pitch as a changeup. Take that Moose!

  • LiveFromNewYork

Maybe Joba can teach Robbie how to work the count. That would be sweet.

Guiliani the fair weather fan. Jerk.

  • Chip

Wow, Joba is definitely getting squeezed a bit

  • http://blogginthebombers.wordpress.com Matt

Wow. I’ve hated Papelbon so much, but this article makes me hate him so much more. He’s a friggin’ retard.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3441390

  • pete

shut up ty wigginton, I don’t like you.

  • Chip

Well it’s a good thing Berkman got picked off

  • Chip

Geez, he’s coming unglued. Hopefully he can get out of this and make it deep in the game yet

  • Chip

Thank you for the one pitch out Shawn!

  • Chip

Joba is gonna take his anger out on the ball when he gets up!

  • Chip

How deep are these fly balls going that gameday keeps putting on (or past) the warning track?

  • pete

    nice changeup

  • Joey

okay, just got home, I see the box but how does Joba look from just watching?

    • Joey

      *box score

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Good, had one bad inning. Two of the four walks were intentional.

  • whozat

If you drop out the 8 intentional balls, his ball to strike ratio is pretty good. Either way, he’s been efficient enough today. The offense has been piss poor, though. It’s not like Chacon’s throwing strikes.

  • George Kaplan

    That was pretty impressive.

  • whozat

    Man, Robbie…

  • Chip

It’s time for the knockout blow and Cano swings at the first pitch

  • BigBlueAL

This lineup at times is so pathetic words cant justify how embarrassing their performance truly has been so far.

  • Ivan

While Cano isn’t hitting he’s sure picking it with his D.

  • BigBlueAL

Cano has been amazing in the field tonight.

  • JT

I wonder what’s cano’s defensive value is worth this year? He is definitely and above average 2b.

  • BigBlueAL

    Here comes another stolen base.

    • BigBlueAL

      That didnt take long.

    • Chip

They get it even with the pitchout, and people wonder why they have three catchers?

  • LiveFromNewYork

    Nice Jorge!

  • pete

    sweet

  • BigBlueAL

Posada said “Its one thing to steal 2b all night, but its another thing to steal 3b”!!!!

  • LiveFromNewYork

I read an article today and they asked Girardi about Melky sliding into first and this was his answer: “It’s instinct.”

    WHAT?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Helluva start by Joba. Now if they only get some frickin’ offense going.

  • pete

does he go out for the 7th?
he’s at 88, but 8 of those were intentional walk pitches.

    • Chip

      I’d take that argument

    • Joey

I’d say take it batter by batter, on the FSN Houston gun they had that last pitch at 97 mph, but I never know with quick trigger Girardi

      • Joey

oh wait, I forgot this is an NL game, so if his spot in the lineup comes up that complicates things…

  • Chip

Come on, let’s get Joba a win!

  • Joey

Bourne is… I believe fast is the word. Damn. He got caught but he’s like freakin lightening

  • LiveFromNewYork

Can you imagine Matsui has 25 reporters following him from Japan? Today’s papers must have been incredible in Japan.

  • Flynn

3 hits vs this tomato can? P-fuckingthetic.

  • Chip

Joba is out if they get to his spot with it close

  • Joey

ugh, I know there is a lefty on the mound but there is this guy name DAMON thats swinging a pretty hot bat lately!

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Nah, save Damon for when he has a chance to do some real damage.

      • Joey

I’m just mad because I wanted Joba to get his first win as a starter

      • Chip

Seventh inning, tie game, 2 on isn’t a chance to do real damage?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I was only half paying attention, I thought there was just a runner on first. My bad.

  • mvg

*sigh* sometimes you can’t play the lefty-righty game, joe…

  • George Kaplan

How close was that to going out, it was on the wall on Gameday.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Gameday is overshooting them then. Bourne was a good 20 feet away from the warning track when he caught that last ball.

      • Chip

I’d have felt better had it actually been almost out

  • JT

Win one, lose one. Win one, lose one. This team’s hitting is pretty pathetic right now. If I ever hear anyone predict them to score 1000 runs again, i swear…….

  • Ivan

Boy those Joba should stay in the pen people seem very quite uh?

    • Joey

Silence is a beautiful thing, huh

    • Chip

Just wait a few starts until he has a mediocre one, they’ll be back out in full force

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Ah, I see Jose Veras has entered the Circle of Trust.

  • Chip

    Jose Veras, the savior!

  • George Kaplan

gosh he looked good. Bye bye Farnsy

    • Chip

If Farnz shows up for the 8th, I’m ordering a hit on Girardi

  • Chip

    The captain takes off!

    • Chip

Hopefully Robbie will now understand that you don’t miss a fastball down the pipe after taking the first pitch

      • Chip

Nope, still fouling off a 3-1 fastball right down the middle up in the zone. He should have crushed that

  • LiveFromNewYork

    About time Cap’n.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

    Tangible.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Now do you leave Veras in? I say … yes.

    • Chip

No question, nobody else is a better option at the moment

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Doug Brocail is the primary setup guy for Houston this year, last year he was like, the 6th man in San Diego’s bullpen.

  • Joey

So Stanford vs. Florida State tomorrow at 2, huh. Bleich vs. Rye- can’t wait :-)

  • E-ROC

Man, i hope Chipper Jones is ok. He was hit in the eye by a ricocheting ball during batting practice.

    • Joey

if it weren’t for bad luck he’d have no luck at all… wait what am I talking about? He gets paid millions to play a game he loves. Hope he’s okay though, would love to see him hit .400 for the season

  • Yankees=warriors

So who’s gonna pitch the 8th? There’s no avoiding Farnsworth today, I think…

    • Chip

Yee of little faith in the Veras

      • Manimal

        Guess again.

      • Yankees=warriors

No, man! I said that cause we know how Joe loves Farns. I have nothing against Veras. He’s been nothing short of great. And he just proved his worth again ^_^.

  • LiveFromNewYork

    Ho-say Ho-say Ho-say Ho-say

  • Yankees=warriors

Never mind. Looks like Joe has finally given up his obsession for Farns. Good thing!

    • Manimal

considering its inter league why not.

Poor Mariano, hes going to die with all these appearances so close together. Maybe its time for Edwar?

      • Chip

No way, this is what he’s conditioned to do. He got his rest in the loss the other day. Gotta take the saves when you have a chance

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Mr. Veras is bringin’ the cheddar. Nasty.

    • Manimal

his fastball has a ton of movement, almost like a Frisbee.

  • Chip

The Farns will now hopefully take his deserved place as power mop-up guy

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Wow. Just … wow. Veras shoved it this game.

    • Matt M.

molina was even stunned on that last curve.

good for veras. taking advantage of his opportunity.

  • Chip

Bringing the closer in down in the 9th with Rivera warming? Doesn’t seem really smart

  • batty

Fuck fuck fuck. Farns is warming up. Fuck.

    • Joey

just about to say that- but you need a few more fucks- fuck fuck fuck

    • Yankees=warriors

      Yeah, I celebrated too early…

  • Manimal

Farnsworth the CLOSER?!?!??! WHY! Edwar has nasty stuff. Farnsworth is throwing his newly discovered cutter and people are hitting it to the moon and beyond.

    • Joey

we need to score 13 more runs (maybe a few more than that) for that lead to be safe with the farns coming in

  • pete

can we all just accept that jose veras asnd edwar ramirez are, for the time being, anyway, our setup men? Really there aren’t a whole lot of other guys around the league in that role who are a whole lot better. The only issue for both of them is control, and girardi has kept them working regularly, which has helped that. Not saying I’m not looking forward to Melancon, because I am, but I’m also pretty happy with these two so far. I think that could be quite a quartet – MM, JV, ER, Mo.

  • Chip

Christian stole home tonight for SWB

  • Manimal

Joe Girardi seems like a different manager today, I think he is just naturally a national league manager.

    • LiveFromNewYork

Maybe he and Willie can trade places.

  • Chip

    WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!?!?

  • Chip

We need at least an insurance run now. Do what you do best Giambi and pull that ball!

    • JT

Only if its there to pull. We don’t need him pulling everything into the shift again.

      • Chip

With a runner on second and no outs we do

      • JT

Oops forgot there was a man on 2b with no outs.

  • Manimal

For an open thread we should talk about what to do with the rotation/bullpen when IPK and Phil Franchise come back

    • Joey

we got a while on Phil, don’t need to worry about that for a bit. IPK down to AAA unless Raz implodes again (or a few more times)

    • Matt M.

too early. still gotta see if those 2 can be effective when they come back. and a lot depends upon when rasner’s magic runs out. and unfortunately injuries tend to even these problems out whether it be to ipk and hughes having a setback or someone else in the rotation.

      • Joey

Hughes I’m not too worried about when he comes back (except for staying healthy of course). After his rehab starts he should be fine and belongs in the bigs

  • JT

Damn this guy Lee… can’t he trip on his shoe laces while running for a ball… that’s not totally unheard of.

    • Manimal

      Luis sojo?

  • Chip

Why can’t Giambi do what he does and hit a grounder to second?

  • LiveFromNewYork

    I hope Jorge isn’t hurt.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I’m sure he’s fine. I betcha Girardi just double switched so that Veras could work 2 innings without coming to the plate.

    • Chip

I doubt it, Girardi just didn’t want them running wild anymore in such a close game. Damon was still on the bench to pinch-hit and you figure Molina doesn’t get up again

    • Manimal

Pete Abe said it was just a double switch, posada is fine.

  • Chip

OK, I’d just like to point out Melky Cabrera just got walked…….INTENTIONALLY

    • JT

Molina is pretty pathetic at the plate ever since coming back from the DL.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Take a picture, you won’t see that often.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I’m offended by Jose Valverde’s fist pump. People complained that Joba was fist pumping in the 8th inning, well, Valverde just pumped his fist despite the fact that his team is losing.

    • Manimal

seriously, wheres espn criticizing him? Stupid sox fans running ESPN.

  • Chip

Here come the most painful 15 or so pitches of the Yankee season

  • Yankees=warriors

    Molina looked bad back there…

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Well, at least he’s going to face the bottom of the order.

  • JT

Melky’s had decent numbers as a lefty. .288/.327/.417

  • Chip

So who do you guys figure the homerun is given up to? I’ll take whoever pinch hits for Valverde

  • LiveFromNewYork

I DO NOT WANT TO WATCH.

    • Manimal

There isnt a yankee fan in the world that wants farnsworth in there right now

  • JT

Thats like the 4th time i’ve seen farnseworth slip

  • JT

5 dollars says he beats the bunt out.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

A-Rod’s creeping in pretty close, hopefully that prevents Bourn from beating it out.

      • Joey

he just ruined it himself, we’ll take it

    • Manimal

5 dollers says he bunts like Cano… oh wait… =]

  • Yankees=warriors

What’s with that slip? That’s the 3rd time that’s happened.
Meanwhile, here’s the Farns we all know.
    I wanna puke.

  • JT

I think Singleton was the only person on the field who thought of that. Didn’t even seem that Girardi had that on his mind. He just wanted that out.

  • JT

The fattest people always steal off the yankees.

Didn’t gomes steal three crucial times off us in a series.

    • Manimal

Yeah seriously. Remember Bonds stole a base last year in interleague. Embarassing.

  • JT

    Fuk yes!

  • Chip

    Saved by Molina!

  • Manimal

Good call Girardi, Molina made a great throw and Posada wouldve been questionable.

  • LiveFromNewYork

    It’s a good night for Joes’s.

  • Yankees=warriors

    Gotta love Molina’s deffense!

  • JT

    !!!!!! Our new closer!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

And you people were worried about Farnsworth.

    • Joey

seriously, what the hell do we need Mo now for? DFA!

  • LiveFromNewYork

    I meant Joses.

  • Joey

whats this feeling? 2 games over? No, this is not familiar. Someone save me!

  • LiveFromNewYork

    Jose Veras. Jose Molina.

    Yeah baby.

  • pete

    …..2…..games……above……..500……

    • JT

We’ll be back to familiar territory after tomorrows game… 1 game over 500.

  • BigBlueAL

    Farsnworth is a GOD!!!!

    • Joey

      blasphemy!

      • BigBlueAL

        LMFAO!!

  • Yankees=warriors

It’s a miracle! We survived Farnsworth and is 2 games above .500!

  • batty

So here’s a question. Does Girardi look at Farns’ performance as rewarding his trust or got lucky?

    • Joey

Dunno about Girardi, but that was all luck, there should have been a man on 2nd with 1 out or 2 on and none out, Bourn helped a lot

  • Manimal

Joba needs to learn the art of fooling batters. It will come with experience and he can stretch out the pitches over 8 or even 9 innings. his last pitch was 97. Nasty.

    • the most felonious vocalist in the wide world of showbusiness

Joba’s slider is one of the most foolish pitches I’ve ever seen. Guys miss it by two feet. Also, before tonight’s start, he’s struck out 72 batters in 54.1 innings while allowing 34 hits and 3 homeruns. What exactly do you want him to do? Go Laredo?
