Game 109: It’s spelled S-H-A-W-N, stupid!

By

The Angels are the best team in baseball. No doubt about it. A few weeks ago I mentioned to Joe that I thought the Halos should make a run at Teixeira because this was their year, and booya (of course I suggested a Kotchman + Adenhart package, but that’s neither here nor there). They’ve got excellent starting pitching, a strong bullpen with all sorts of different looks, a defense that makes every play, and an offense capable of beating you on the bases or now by hitting the ball over the wall. They might as well start lining up their postseason rotation now.

I know the Yanks have a shiny new future HOF catcher, but wouldn’t it make more sense to start Jose Molina behind the plate today? He’s been much better at gunning down would-be basestealers than Pudge, which is going to be worth something all those baserunners Sidney Ponson will inevitably allow. I guess it doesn’t really matter if the Halos keep hitting all those 3-run homers.

Speaking of, where did all the pitching go? Just a week ago we were talking about how unbelievable the Yanks pitching staff had been lately, but now? They’ve got a 6.39 ERA & 1.60 WHIP over the last seven days, and opposing batters have an .884 OPS in that span. They’ve basically turned everyone into Carlos frickin’ Lee. You can bitch about Ponson & Rasner all you want, but Moose and Pettitte haven’t been getting it done lately either. Thank Mariano for Joba.

1. Damon, LF
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Giambi, DH
6. Cano, 2B
7. Betemit, 1B
8. Pudge, C
9. Melky, CF

And on the mound, Sidney “will pitch for food” Ponson.

Note: Chris Britton was shipped back to Triple-A after his 53 pitch outing last night, Brian Bruney rejoins the team sans lisfranc fracture … X(BH) Nady has a sore quad and is day-to-day … the last batter to get a hit off Edwar Ramirez was Brian Schneider in the second game of the split-stadium doubleheader against the Mets, he’s faced 45 batters since then … Bobby Abreu has a 1.105 OPS since July 8th … this could be Ponson’s last start for the Yanks, IPK has been pitching pretty well in Triple-A … Jeff Karstens won his first start with the Buccos earlier today … the game is on MY9 tonight, not YES

  1. Joltin' Joe says:

Edwar the new 8th inning guy perhaps? Let’s get a lead.

  2. Newman says:

Great “thank Mariano for Joba” line, I think I might’ve been the first to post that in a different thread, but I’ll stop my self-promoting right there and just enjoy the line’s amazingness.

  3. DP says:

Isn’t it more likely that Aceves takes Ponson’s spot before Kennedy? Aceves is throwing on Ponson’s days, and Kennedy’s last start was definitely short of spectacular (wildness early). I think they’d want IPK to start one more time, which would preclude him from Ponson’s next start (but he could replace Rasner).

  4. Ivan says:

I want to beat the Angels so bad. Seriously they are ticking me off.

  5. stuart says:

I have no idea if IPK or Aceves would be better the nPonson and possiby Rasner but if those goes have (especially Ponson) have another disaster outing they need to try something else…

Girardi is suppose to be a sabermetrics type guy, he has to see the alarming WHIP #’s for Ponson…

  6. A.D. says:

    How did X hurt himself?

  7. Joltin' Joe says:

BTW Mike, were you three guys friends before you made the blog?

  8. A.D. says:

I gotta say I like this blog even more after the past 2 days of technical difficulties and trying to work with some of the others (with all due respect), their commenting just doesn’t work for me.

    Thanks for the great work!

    • Jamal G. says:

Yeah, seriously. Outside of RAB and NoMass, I basically ignore the comments on other blogs and forums. Pending Pinstripes and Saber Scouting do have some very informative readers though.

    • Ivan says:

Yeah, I,ve said it before, you guys are the best yankee blog right now. You guys are fair and fun and very informative.

  9. McCaff says:

when did you start the site?

  10. A.D. says:

Any word on that Texas pitcher who toured yankee stadium and had Pettite tell him to “hurry up and get signed”

    • Jamal G. says:

If you’re talking about Brett Marshall, you have some strange psychic powers. NoMass’ Lane Meyer (one of the best, if not the best, blogs on the Yanks’ draft) has an update about Brett Marshall (and Scot Bittle, though don’t read too much into the Bittle portion).

      http://www.nomaas.org/draft/?p=101

      • A.D. says:

Exactly, and I didn’t even read NoMass today, a friend of mine were just talking on Gchat during work today over the redicness that some of the pitching prospects the yanks have rights too.

        I certainly hope Bliech signs

      • Ivan says:

I like No Mass, the problem with No Mass it tends to be obnoxious at times and that can be annoying but overall they are fun, fair and informative which is key ingrediants for a good blog. Unlike WasWatching.com where steve knocks Cashman more than Republicans knocking Barack Obama (Or as I like to call him Barack Odrama)

  11. Jamal G. says:

Not for nothing, but fuck the Red Sox. They have their press conference and take endless shots at Manny Ramirez but here Manny is in his press conference and every answer he has to the Boston questions are “New chapter…let’s move on”.

  12. A.D. says:

As a Yankee in 2008 Sidney Ponson has qiven a quality start after every game following a start that he gave up 7 runs.

    FACT

Sad thing is that he now has 2 out of 5 starts have been 7+ runs

2 Quality starts, 2 7 run games, 1 almost quality start (5.2 inning)

  13. DP says:

    Must. Score. Runs. Soon.

  14. A.D. says:

    Ponson’s WHIP just plummeted

  15. Mike A. says:

Did Sidney Ponson just retire three consecutive batters? Holy crap.

  16. BigBlueAL says:

WTF!!! Ponson just had a 1-2-3 inning!!!!!!

  17. Ivan says:

This is one of those games that I am bracing myself for a lost.

  18. A.D. says:

    Double Play!

  19. BigBlueAL says:

Just curious, is Ervin Santana still struggling on the road this season??? I know in the past if im not mistaken his road numbers were horrible compared to his home number…

  20. Mike A. says:

Gotta score early, start the game off on the right foot. Ponson had a 1-2-3 inning for chrissakes.

  21. Ivan says:

    NASTY Slider.

  22. Mike A. says:

Bobby Abreu is 5th in the AL in RBI? Never ever would have guessed it.

  23. BigBlueAL says:

The Angels announcers just said Abreu is 5th in the AL in RBI. I know it is a meaningless stat but I didnt realize he was up there in RBI, even though I know he is hitting well with RISP, until this at-bat….

  24. Mike A. says:

    Yikes. Takeaseat-Rod

  25. A.D. says:

Ugh, Big G better pick this up

  26. Mike A. says:

Magic Santana’s got the filth workin’ tonight.

  27. Ivan says:

Man Santana is throwing some discusting sliders right now.

  28. BigBlueAL says:

Only the Yankees could be tied 0-0 after the 1st inning but feel deflated….

  29. A.D. says:

Aurthur Rhodes potentially debuting for the Marlins!

  30. BigBlueAL says:

Wow Kazmir has walked 4 batters in the 1st inning so far vs the Tigers, but only allows 1 run shit….

  31. A.D. says:

Red Sox shouldn’t even report that the rest of the players wanted him out

    • Steve H says:

This is just the start of the Manny bashing that will leak out of the front office. They let him get away with crap for years, and now they’ll put the blame squarely on Manny. Just imagine all of the stuff that didn’t get out. I hope Bay starts out 0-10, get the fans going.

      • Mike A. says:

Well, they let him get away with it right from the start, it’s their fault. If they take care of it early, then it doesn’t escalate like it has.

        • Jamal G. says:

Peter Gammons literally wanted to beat the living hell out of Steve Phillips when Phillips suggested that same notion a couple days ago. I have really lost all respect for Peter Gammons, he’s just a tired old man.

  32. Mike A. says:

Who’s that man and what has he done with Sidney Ponson?

  33. Ivan says:

Ponson has thrown back to back 1-2-3 innings.

  34. Steve H says:

Can we call this a perfect game yet for Ponson? I mean, like in golf you get a handicap. Doesn’t 2 perfect innings impress you more than 9 out of Cone/Wells?

  35. BigBlueAL says:

How about the Yankees sign Livan Hernandez so they could have the heaviest back end of the rotation in baseball with Ponson and Livan. They could be like the Twin Towers in the WWF back in the late 80′s (Akeem and the Big Boss Man).

  36. A.D. says:

    Figgins, showing the arm

  37. A.D. says:

Why is Betemit above Pudge in the lineup?

  38. Jamal G. says:

Damn, is Manny’s wife hot or what? I’ve always thought Tony Parker and Kobe Bryant (Jose Lima as well) had the best looking wives, but damn, Mrs. Manny is unbelievable.

    http://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.....;p=1734202

  39. Steve H says:

I have to say he has done much better for himself than Big Papi. I think Papi being a late bloomer cost himself a chance at a woman like Mrs. MBM

  40. BigBlueAL says:

It takes a special pitcher to walk Howie Kendrick….

  41. A.D. says:

Mark Kotsays wife should def be on that list

    http://www.coedmagazine.com/sports/4076

  42. Ivan says:

Man, you know I am gonna root for manny and the Dodgers to make the WS.

  43. Mike A. says:

Check this shit out, Ponson pitching with some conviction.

  44. BigBlueAL says:

Forget about hot wives for a moment, how abour Sir Sidney throwing a No-No through 3 innings!!!!

  45. Joey H says:

so now pudge is gonna turn ponson into roger clemens? lol

    • A.D. says:

If the first 12 innings of pudge has taught us anything is, he cannot catch Pettite, and he can make Ponson into a HoFer

      • Joey H says:

yeah lol. i hear ya A.D. give him some time, two vets, they will figure it out. but for a guy his age he can really move behind the plate. im impressed

  46. Ivan says:

I was wondering, why do wives bitch when Players like Jordan Shaq and A-Rod cheat? Seriously, what you think he was gonna do. Besides, no matter how many women he fucking whether it’s A-Rod or Shaq, your still his #1 Woman. Women need to stop seriously.

    • Joey H says:

yea they need to understand .. wives like cynthia that is.. that arod and his peers are on the road 90+ days a year. i would wanna crush some on the side too if i was alex god damn rodriguez, the star of the yankees

    • Jamal G. says:

Jordan’s ex-wife is hideous, she shouldn’t have been complaining that her ex-husband was doing anything.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Speaking of Jordan, his wife is not hot at all. Robin Givens played her in that horrible made-for-TV movie, now that is someone Jordan shouldve married, just ask Mike Tyson (btw she looked amazing in Boomerang, 100 times hotter than Halle Berry in that movie)….

      • Ivan says:

No way. Robin Givens was slightly average at best. Halle Berry is just great. In Jungle Fever she played the most good looking crackhead I,ve ever seen.

    • Newman says:

My guess as to why they’re pissed when their husbands cheat is that they’re married and probably have kids together. Just a shot in the dark though

      • Ivan says:

Yea but come on, Which big time athlete doesn’t cheat. To me, he married you and picked out if a bunch of females. To the athlete he thinks your special no matta what. So all ther women he fuck with are just stanks.

    • murphy says:

thats exactly why athletes should not get married. if youre rich and famous, whats the point?

  47. Jamal G. says:

Mark Teixeira got owned on that 3-1 pitch.

  48. A.D. says:

so Gary Matthews & the biggest bench contract will get to play?

    • Jamal G. says:

It’s amazing how both Los Angeles franchises made two of the dumbest free agent deals in recent memory (Juan Pierre to the Dodgers and Gary Matthews Jr. to the Halos).

  49. Jamal G. says:

Bobby Abreu making a wall catch? Something is going on…

  50. A.D. says:

Is X playing RF after all, cause someone made a catch against the wall

  51. BigBlueAL says:

BTW, this guy has the 8th hottest sports wife:

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wi....._match.jpg

  52. Jamal G. says:

Wow, what the hell is with Vladdy? He can not run in full strides at all.

  53. A.D. says:

Seriously why is Vlad playing the OF, yeah he has the arm, but he hobbles everywhere

  54. BigBlueAL says:

C’mon ARod you gotta be fuckin kiddin me….

  55. Newman says:

BTW Jamal, doesn’t today mark the start of you caring about the results of games? I’m pretty sure I remember you saying that August is your starting point

    • Jamal G. says:

Yup, right around here. My marker is usually six weeks to go in the season but since we’re in third, every game really does start to matter. Scoreboard watching should wait until September.

  56. BigBlueAL says:

I guess this week Cano thinks its April again….

  57. BigBlueAL says:

Damn there goes the No-Hitter, I was so sure Ponson was goin to make history tonight….

  58. Steve H says:

Sorry, but for Big Papi’s fame, $, etc, his wife ain’t hot. And look at Papelboner’s wife without the spray on tan. Woof woof

    http://soxanddawgs.com/?p=3699

  59. Newman says:

Here’s the real Fatson we know and hate

  60. BigBlueAL says:

So Ponson wont throw a no-hitter, but the shutout is still in tact….

  61. zzzzz says:

do the yanks pitch out way more than other teams?

  62. A.D. says:

Wonder if Pudge and Jeter talk hitting

  63. Jamal G. says:

I hope Girardi has the bullpen warming up to start the sixth. With the 3-4-5 up and the way Ponson ended the last two innings, not a good combo.

  64. BigBlueAL says:

    Pudge fitting right in offensively.

  65. Newman says:

    Melky being Melky

  66. A.D. says:

    Sir SID Crusing

  67. Jamal G. says:

God Dammit, we have to pitch against Chris Davis (1.018-OPS, 10-HR, 9-2B, .369-IsoP in his first 117-PA in the Majors) in Arlington? Booo!

  68. A.D. says:

Damon has 33% of tonight’s hits

  69. A.D. says:

He was safe, bad tag, throw was there

  70. Jamal G. says:

Hey, what is the story behind the game thread title?

  71. A.D. says:

Big G either strikes out or flys out

  72. BigBlueAL says:

Is there still time for Cashman to trade for another few hitters….

  73. Steve says:

Has anyone been listening to the radio lately?

    “THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL!!!!

    Really?

“THE ANGELS WILL BE IN THE WORLD SERIES, WRITE IT DOWN!!!!!”

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....8;type=reg

    21st in OBP

    22nd in OPS

“Well, they’re a scrappy, NL style team. Thats not how they score runs”

    17th in runs scored.

“Well, Scioscia has them doing all the little things, they don’t beat themselves”

    11th in Fielding PCT

    “They can pitch”

9th in ERA (6th in AL)

I’m not knocking them, they’re a good team. But they’re not the 1927 Yankees. They just happen to be very hot right now, but they have a bad stretch or two coming.

    • A.D. says:

      and a pretty bad division

think if we played the As & Mariners 18 times a season each

    • Steve H says:

I agree, they are getting quite a bit of smoke blown up their asses. And I hate to say it, but the Sox have owned them in the playoffs the last few years. Though the Teixera trade was big, they did have Izturis hitting 3rd before the trade was made. Think about that…….

    • BigBlueAL says:

Picking up Teixeira should help the offensive numbers a bit though.

      • Steve says:

A bit. He replaced a good player in Kotchman at 1B, though. So to see the net effect you have to look at both.

Kotchman has an OPS of around .800 and Tex has an OPS of around .900. Thats a difference of .100 OPS, or about one base every 10 AB’s.

        Thats not a huge difference.

  74. Jamal G. says:

    Per Chad Jennings:

Bottom fourth: Best throw I’ve seen in a very, very long time. Matt Carson just gunned Kevin Melillo out at home plate from deep right field, and did it on the fly. I was positive it was a sacrifice fly and so was everyone here in the press box. It takes quite a bit to make an entire press box gasp, but Carson just made it happen. Unreal.

    Mike was right, 80-arm.

  75. Steve H says:

Any report on whether Ponson was drinking pre-game? Is he better on or off the sauce?

    • Steve H says:

And if we get 7 shutout innings from Sidney freaking Ponson, and can’t find a way to win shit should hit the fan. Sidney the Stopper!!

  76. BigBlueAL says:

Pete Abraham just wrote that Girardi now says he hopes for Wang to be available to pitch by October, not September. Sigh….

  77. BigBlueAL says:

I still cant get over Cano being thrown out on that play….

  78. Thurman says:

I’d like to state that I called 7 nice innings out of Ponson on the thread earlier today.

  79. BigBlueAL says:

Normally I would be happy that the other team’s starting pitcher is throwing a shutout and is about to be taken out, but the Angels bullpen is just as good as their starting rotation…

  80. BigBlueAL says:

    Great at-bat Melky.

  81. BigBlueAL says:

Jack Cust just hit a HR off Okajima in the 8th to tie the game 1-1.

  82. BigBlueAL says:

Oh boy here we go with Mo in a non-save situation…

  83. batty says:

Now if Joba was pitching the 8th inning…. jk

    • Steve H says:

Joba? What about Farnsworth? Well if you look past K-Rod’s save #’s, he hasn’t been great this year. Hopefully Mo can keep it to 1.

  84. BigBlueAL says:

This is getting fucking ridiculous with Mo now…

  85. Jeremy says:

There is no way they should lose this game.

  86. BigBlueAL says:

Its gotten to the point where I dont want to even bother making the playoffs cause the Yankees dont have a snowball’s chance in hell of ever beating the Angels anyway and that would be their opponent since the Yankees will most likely make it as a WC, that is if they dont go 0-10 vs the Angels durin the regular season….

  87. batty says:

Dumbfounded. Shocked. That one really, really hurt – worst loss all year.

  88. dkidd says:

    k-rod is seriously annoying

  89. Jeremy says:

can you believe Ponson pitches a GEM and they lose?

So much for the “we’re losing because our 4th and 5th starters suck” theory

  90. mike says:

when you get 7 innings and 2 hits allowed out of ponson you need to win that game….just very disappointing from the yanks

    • Jeremy says:

It’s almost unforgiveable. I have no faith in sir sid but he pitched his heart out against the ANGELS and they didn’t win.

That sucks. I’m sorry Sid. Truly.

  91. Steve H says:

On the remote chance that Girardi looks at this site, can someone please post Mo’s stats in save/non-save situations? We get 7 innings out of our starter, our pen has been lights out. Why go to Mo in the 9th. And I don’t want to hear that as the home team you don’t keep your closer in the pen, because in this cause, our closer sucks in non-save situations.

    • Jamal G. says:

Mariano Rivera is the best relief pitcher in the history of baseball, what idiot wouldn’t bring him in? I’ll take my chances with that unbelievably small sample size with Mariano Rivera on the mound.

      • Steve H says:

When’s the last time he pitched well in a non-save situation? We weren’t hitting anyway, so odds of extra innings were pretty good, and the bullpen rested.

    • Joey says:

it’s about using your best pitcher available in high leverage (not just save) situations. We shouldn’t have lost this game, but you can’t blame Joe for using Mo in this situation, especially when many people (including myself) wanted Girardi to use Mo more not just in conventional save situations like Torre always did, but other important game changing innings. It hasn’t worked so far, but if there is one person in that bullpen that I would want to pitch any inning for me we all know who that would be without the slightest hesitation. Maybe it’ll work next time

    • BigBlueAL says:

This loss is all on the offense, not on Mo and certainly not on Girardi for bringing in Mo.

  92. dkidd says:

jeff karstens: 6 scoreless innings and a win for the pirates

    welcome to the national league!

  93. Jeremy says:

Yeah Girardi and Mo deserve blame but where the F was the offense? Sound asleep.

  94. Bryan says:

When will Joe learn that you CANNOT bring Mo into a non save situation, I have to think that Veras or Edwar might have held down the 9th in a 0-0 situation. Just look at the splits between save and non-save situation stats!

    • Joey says:

you’re overreacting. see replys to comments above

    • Jamal G. says:

When will people learn the meaning of the term “SMALL SAMPLE SIZE”?

      • Steve H says:

        PA runs ER
        save situation 2358 141 131
        non-save situation 1255 94 85

Running these numbers through the t-test and we become 95% confident that Mariano allows runs at a greater rate during a non-save situation than a save situation.

This is not a small sample size.

  95. Steve H says:

Of the eight runs Rivera has allowed in 48 1/3 innings this season, all but one have come in non-save situations.

  96. BigBlueAL says:

I tell you whats really alarming, check out the Home records for Tampa, Boston, Chicago, Minnesota and Anaheim (all the teams in the AL with better records than the Yankees) compared to the Yankees at 34-26.. The first 3 teams mentioned all have lost only 16 games at home heading into tonight while the Twins have lost 20 and the Angels 21. They all except for the Angels have more wins at home than the Yankees, and the Yankees have played more games at home than all of them….

    • BigBlueAL says:

I only mention this cause it is annoying when you hear announcers talk about how tough it is to win at Yankee Stadium when you are the road team and how players automatically supposedly get nervous and shit in their pants when playing at Yankee Stadium as the road team. It aint happening this year apparently….

  97. Steve H says:

As good as the 7 ip and 2 hits look, if this were a patient team, Sir Sid wouldn’t have lasted 3 innings. 96 pitches, 48 balls, 48 strikes. 4 walks, 1k. I’d still like this to be his last start, anything more and we’re playing with fire.

  98. stuart says:

good game by the offense.. Giambi’s under 200 BA with RISP is just bad luck this yr. is that accurate analysis???

this team cannot get big hits, it has been a whole season problem, and I am suppose to believe it is just bad luck??

this offense is just league average look at the #’s.. This is not going to get it done…Should I be thinking differently?

    thanks…

  99. Jake says:

I hope there’s some good news out of Down on the Farm tonight. A couple homers from Ajax. A shutout from one of our starters. The return of Humberto. Something to make me feel better about the Yanks right now.

  100. BigBlueAL says:

On the bright side, the Rays, Red Sox and Twins all won tonight…..
