Game 109: It’s spelled S-H-A-W-N, stupid!

By

The Angels are the best team in baseball. No doubt about it. A few weeks ago I mentioned to Joe that I thought the Halos should make a run at Teixeira because this was their year, and booya (of course I suggested a Kotchman + Adenhart package, but that’s neither here nor there). They’ve got excellent starting pitching, a strong bullpen with all sorts of different looks, a defense that makes every play, and an offense capable of beating you on the bases or now by hitting the ball over the wall. They might as well start lining up their postseason rotation now.

I know the Yanks have a shiny new future HOF catcher, but wouldn’t it make more sense to start Jose Molina behind the plate today? He’s been much better at gunning down would-be basestealers than Pudge, which is going to be worth something all those baserunners Sidney Ponson will inevitably allow. I guess it doesn’t really matter if the Halos keep hitting all those 3-run homers.

Speaking of, where did all the pitching go? Just a week ago we were talking about how unbelievable the Yanks pitching staff had been lately, but now? They’ve got a 6.39 ERA & 1.60 WHIP over the last seven days, and opposing batters have an .884 OPS in that span. They’ve basically turned everyone into Carlos frickin’ Lee. You can bitch about Ponson & Rasner all you want, but Moose and Pettitte haven’t been getting it done lately either. Thank Mariano for Joba.

1. Damon, LF
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Giambi, DH
6. Cano, 2B
7. Betemit, 1B
8. Pudge, C
9. Melky, CF

And on the mound, Sidney “will pitch for food” Ponson.

Note: Chris Britton was shipped back to Triple-A after his 53 pitch outing last night, Brian Bruney rejoins the team sans lisfranc fracture … X(BH) Nady has a sore quad and is day-to-day … the last batter to get a hit off Edwar Ramirez was Brian Schneider in the second game of the split-stadium doubleheader against the Mets, he’s faced 45 batters since then … Bobby Abreu has a 1.105 OPS since July 8th … this could be Ponson’s last start for the Yanks, IPK has been pitching pretty well in Triple-A … Jeff Karstens won his first start with the Buccos earlier today … the game is on MY9 tonight, not YES

Edwar the new 8th inning guy perhaps? Let’s get a lead.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Heh, no kidding. They’d have to take the lead first before needing an 8th inning guy.

  • Newman

Great “thank Mariano for Joba” line, I think I might’ve been the first to post that in a different thread, but I’ll stop my self-promoting right there and just enjoy the line’s amazingness.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yeah, I definitely took that one from someone in the comments.

      • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

        PIRACY!!!

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Hells no, I own the comments! Or at least one-third of ‘em.

          • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

            I own YOU.

      • Newman

        I’ll take the recognition

  • DP

Isn’t it more likely that Aceves takes Ponson’s spot before Kennedy? Aceves is throwing on Ponson’s days, and Kennedy’s last start was definitely short of spectacular (wildness early). I think they’d want IPK to start one more time, which would preclude him from Ponson’s next start (but he could replace Rasner).

    • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

Huh, I never noticed that, good observation DP. Weird Al would have been my second choice but the rotation lining up might tip the scale in his favor.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Could be, but I suspect they’ll go with the kid who’s more a part of their future plans.

      • DP

I agree, I just think they want to give Kennedy 1 or 2 more AAA starts, and therefore give Aceves 1 or 2 spot MLB starts.

      • A.D.

Aceves hopefully will be up to a full start today

  • Ivan

I want to beat the Angels so bad. Seriously they are ticking me off.

  • stuart

I have no idea if IPK or Aceves would be better the nPonson and possiby Rasner but if those goes have (especially Ponson) have another disaster outing they need to try something else…

Girardi is suppose to be a sabermetrics type guy, he has to see the alarming WHIP #’s for Ponson…

    • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

That’s why he “used” Sexson last week, whenever that was, for Giambi… sabermetrics at its best.

  • A.D.

    How did X hurt himself?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Probably running out all those XBHs. He’s available to pinch hit they say.

    • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

His wife just had Xavier VI…

      • A.D.

Enough said, up there with Aceves pulled groin

  • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

BTW Mike, were you three guys friends before you made the blog?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Kinda. We all knew each other from our other blogging adventures, but that’s it.

      • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

Cool, I didn’t realize RAB was as new as it is, really took off.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yeah it did. None of us expected it to take off like it has.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Heh, that was going to be my idea for a guest column, sort of like Mike Ashmore’s “Getting To Know…” segments.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Trust me, there’s not much behind the birth of RAB. An email or two, and boom, the rest is history.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Oh, I meant you three guys, not RAB. Like you see how Ashmore does his, where he gives you a little insight on the player’s lives away from the game? Kind of like that, just who you three are outside of the blogosphere.

I’ve been doing a bit too much running around lately so haven’t had time to work up a pre-draft, but I thought it would be a good idea for us readers.

  • A.D.

I gotta say I like this blog even more after the past 2 days of technical difficulties and trying to work with some of the others (with all due respect), their commenting just doesn’t work for me.

    Thanks for the great work!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Yeah, seriously. Outside of RAB and NoMass, I basically ignore the comments on other blogs and forums. Pending Pinstripes and Saber Scouting do have some very informative readers though.

      • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

I like SaberScouting a lot myself, I just wish they would update more often than once every ten days.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Yeah, that is true. However, when you consider the fact that their stuff is so in-depth, you tend to give them a pass.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I will say this, the “Images of Manny” thread on SoSH yesterday was amazing.

      • A.D.

Yeah the lack of informativeness hurts, I mean everyone makes comments once in awhile which gets ripped apart here, including myself, but in general ppl don throw out some uneducated comments, which just makes it smoother and better

    • Ivan

Yeah, I,ve said it before, you guys are the best yankee blog right now. You guys are fair and fun and very informative.

  • McCaff

when did you start the site?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

      February 2007.

  • A.D.

Any word on that Texas pitcher who toured yankee stadium and had Pettite tell him to “hurry up and get signed”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

If you’re talking about Brett Marshall, you have some strange psychic powers. NoMass’ Lane Meyer (one of the best, if not the best, blogs on the Yanks’ draft) has an update about Brett Marshall (and Scot Bittle, though don’t read too much into the Bittle portion).

      http://www.nomaas.org/draft/?p=101

      • A.D.

Exactly, and I didn’t even read NoMass today, a friend of mine were just talking on Gchat during work today over the redicness that some of the pitching prospects the yanks have rights too.

        I certainly hope Bliech signs

      • Ivan

I like No Mass, the problem with No Mass it tends to be obnoxious at times and that can be annoying but overall they are fun, fair and informative which is key ingrediants for a good blog. Unlike WasWatching.com where steve knocks Cashman more than Republicans knocking Barack Obama (Or as I like to call him Barack Odrama)

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

NoMaas is the definition of arrogant Yankee fans. And I love it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Not for nothing, but fuck the Red Sox. They have their press conference and take endless shots at Manny Ramirez but here Manny is in his press conference and every answer he has to the Boston questions are “New chapter…let’s move on”.

    • A.D.

Yeah thinking back on the Nomar deal, and living in Boston at the time, they really do look to turn the fans against the player, or at least get him out of the fans being infatuated with him

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Definitely. Did you see the hatchet job Gammons gave Manny? Classless.

        • A.D.

Surprised they didn’t tear up Hansen for not living up to his bonus

  • A.D.

As a Yankee in 2008 Sidney Ponson has qiven a quality start after every game following a start that he gave up 7 runs.

    FACT

Sad thing is that he now has 2 out of 5 starts have been 7+ runs

2 Quality starts, 2 7 run games, 1 almost quality start (5.2 inning)

  • DP

    Must. Score. Runs. Soon.

  • A.D.

    Ponson’s WHIP just plummeted

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yeah, it’s now closer to 2.00 than 3.00.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Did Sidney Ponson just retire three consecutive batters? Holy crap.

  • BigBlueAL

WTF!!! Ponson just had a 1-2-3 inning!!!!!!

  • Ivan

This is one of those games that I am bracing myself for a lost.

  • A.D.

    Double Play!

    • A.D.

      Excellent, it worked

  • BigBlueAL

Just curious, is Ervin Santana still struggling on the road this season??? I know in the past if im not mistaken his road numbers were horrible compared to his home number…

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Nope, 8-2 on the road I believe.

    • A.D.

He’s put it together this season, last year he was TERRIBLE on the road 1-10 8.38 ERA

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Gotta score early, start the game off on the right foot. Ponson had a 1-2-3 inning for chrissakes.

  • Ivan

    NASTY Slider.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Bobby Abreu is 5th in the AL in RBI? Never ever would have guessed it.

    • Ivan

You gotta admit Abreu gets underrated by yankee fans.

  • BigBlueAL

The Angels announcers just said Abreu is 5th in the AL in RBI. I know it is a meaningless stat but I didnt realize he was up there in RBI, even though I know he is hitting well with RISP, until this at-bat….

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

    Yikes. Takeaseat-Rod

  • A.D.

Ugh, Big G better pick this up

    • A.D.

      nope, waste

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

They need less talent, more grit.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Magic Santana’s got the filth workin’ tonight.

  • Ivan

Man Santana is throwing some discusting sliders right now.

  • BigBlueAL

Only the Yankees could be tied 0-0 after the 1st inning but feel deflated….

  • A.D.

Aurthur Rhodes potentially debuting for the Marlins!

  • BigBlueAL

Wow Kazmir has walked 4 batters in the 1st inning so far vs the Tigers, but only allows 1 run shit….

    • A.D.

Hmm wonder if we can trade Zambrano back to the Rays for Kazmir??

  • A.D.

Red Sox shouldn’t even report that the rest of the players wanted him out

    • Steve H

This is just the start of the Manny bashing that will leak out of the front office. They let him get away with crap for years, and now they’ll put the blame squarely on Manny. Just imagine all of the stuff that didn’t get out. I hope Bay starts out 0-10, get the fans going.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Well, they let him get away with it right from the start, it’s their fault. If they take care of it early, then it doesn’t escalate like it has.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Peter Gammons literally wanted to beat the living hell out of Steve Phillips when Phillips suggested that same notion a couple days ago. I have really lost all respect for Peter Gammons, he’s just a tired old man.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Who’s that man and what has he done with Sidney Ponson?

  • Ivan

Ponson has thrown back to back 1-2-3 innings.

  • Steve H

Can we call this a perfect game yet for Ponson? I mean, like in golf you get a handicap. Doesn’t 2 perfect innings impress you more than 9 out of Cone/Wells?

  • BigBlueAL

How about the Yankees sign Livan Hernandez so they could have the heaviest back end of the rotation in baseball with Ponson and Livan. They could be like the Twin Towers in the WWF back in the late 80′s (Akeem and the Big Boss Man).

    • A.D.

Livan was never a small guy, but he has gotten noticeable fatter of late

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

        Maybe he ate his brother?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

          Sorry, half brother.

  • A.D.

    Figgins, showing the arm

  • A.D.

Why is Betemit above Pudge in the lineup?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Damn, is Manny’s wife hot or what? I’ve always thought Tony Parker and Kobe Bryant (Jose Lima as well) had the best looking wives, but damn, Mrs. Manny is unbelievable.

    http://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.....;p=1734202

    • BigBlueAL

Dont like the dreads look on her….Damon and Giambi are no slouches in the hot wives category.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Yeah, I’ve never liked braids on women. Dreads look good on some girls, but not all.

    • Ivan

      What about Posada’s?

      • BigBlueAL

Yeah thats right, she was definitely hot a few years back. I remember readin an article in the Post i think talkin about a fan stalking her in the stadium….

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yeah, Mr. Manny is pretty hot. Mark Kotsay’s wife reigns supreme though.

      http://umpbump.com/press/wp-co....._com_8.jpg

      • A.D.

        Great minds thing alike

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

          Fo shizzle.

    • A.D.

      Posted this below by mistake:

      Mark Kotsay’s wife

      http://www.coedmagazine.com/sports/4076

      • BigBlueAL

I dunno if you guys have a clue who Peter Crouch is, but if he has a wife that hot, this world has come to an end…..

        • A.D.

Yeah shows how easy it is being a “footballer” across the pond

          • BigBlueAL

He might be the ugliest athlete ive ever seen, and he is 6’7 and skinny as fuck to boot…

            • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

              Sam Cassell. ‘Nuff said.

              • BigBlueAL

Teyshaun Prince might be worse lookin…

                • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

                  Oh, God, you’re right.

                • Doug

Tayshaun Prince doesn’t do the Robot.

                • BigBlueAL

LOL. Thats right Crouch celebrated a goal doin the robot!!!! I think even Fifa 08 has him doing it when he scores sometimes….

      • A.D.

Scott Podsednick’s wife….really, she must love the SB

        • BigBlueAL

Peja’s wife must really love 3-pointers….

  • Steve H

I have to say he has done much better for himself than Big Papi. I think Papi being a late bloomer cost himself a chance at a woman like Mrs. MBM

    • DP

Weighing 350 lbs. doesn’t help all that much either…

      • BigBlueAL

Didnt hurt Kevin James in the King of Queens or Hitch….

        • A.D.

Papi lives in reality, apparenly his wife is pretty hot, my friend was a lifeguard at the summer camp his kid went to in Mass, said she looked good

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I have to give it to Clay Buchholz, nice. Kevin Youkilis, as expected, is with a man.

      http://www.wagrankings.com/hot.....ees-wives/

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Oh, this site has the Red Sox and Yankees’ wives, so scroll all the way down (I know, I stopped at Buchholz as well…).

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Buchholz is probably holding her laptop ransom.

          ;)

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Yeah, I kinda really LoL’ed there.

        • Jeremy

They have some girlfriends on there but not the Maxim 100 which is all of Derek Jeter’s girlfriends. Some how I think that if you throw even one or two of Jeter’s babes in there, thhhhhhhhheeeeeeee Yaaaaaankeeeeeeees win.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Wait, Pedroia’s wife is shorter than he is???

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I know, couldn’t believe it either.

BTW, I know Andy Pettitte is just a good ol’ Texan boy, but damn, that’s the best he could do? Eh screw it, love is love.

          • BigBlueAL

Actually I remember back in the day she used to look pretty hot, like durin the championship years…

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Love is love? Who are you, LL Cool J?

            • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Hah, I just didn’t want to completely bash our boy Andy.

      • A.D.

The fact that Papelbons has a complelty fake tan and fake tits doesn’t surprise me one bit….clearly not his Miss State college sweetheart

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I know Cole Hamels is married to a former Playboy Bunny, can’t remember her name though…

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Oh, and Salty’s married to a chick that’s like, 15 years older than him.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

You know who’s weird and ugly? Kirsten Dunst. You know she is actually stalking Emil Hirsch (Speed Racer, Alpha Dog, Into The Wild) right now in an attempt to meet him?

  • BigBlueAL

It takes a special pitcher to walk Howie Kendrick….

    • A.D.

      Saving the no hitter

  • A.D.

Mark Kotsays wife should def be on that list

    http://www.coedmagazine.com/sports/4076

  • Ivan

Man, you know I am gonna root for manny and the Dodgers to make the WS.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Check this shit out, Ponson pitching with some conviction.

    • Joey H

well if someone had a flame under my ass i would pitch great too mike.

  • BigBlueAL

Forget about hot wives for a moment, how abour Sir Sidney throwing a No-No through 3 innings!!!!

    • A.D.

There’s a game going on? I’m 10 tabs deep in hot celebrity wife websites!

    • murphy

      dont jinx it! come on!

      • BigBlueAL

        Shit. My bad….

  • Joey H

so now pudge is gonna turn ponson into roger clemens? lol

    • A.D.

If the first 12 innings of pudge has taught us anything is, he cannot catch Pettite, and he can make Ponson into a HoFer

      • Joey H

yeah lol. i hear ya A.D. give him some time, two vets, they will figure it out. but for a guy his age he can really move behind the plate. im impressed

  • Ivan

I was wondering, why do wives bitch when Players like Jordan Shaq and A-Rod cheat? Seriously, what you think he was gonna do. Besides, no matter how many women he fucking whether it’s A-Rod or Shaq, your still his #1 Woman. Women need to stop seriously.

    • Joey H

yea they need to understand .. wives like cynthia that is.. that arod and his peers are on the road 90+ days a year. i would wanna crush some on the side too if i was alex god damn rodriguez, the star of the yankees

      • A.D.

        Plus shes not that hot.

Mark Kotsay’s wife can complain, as could Mannys, or Buchholtz’s GF, wives that aren’t as attractive have less leverage

        • Joey H

yea didnt she pull some shit last year, waht did her shirt say man eater? something stupid i cant remember

          • A.D.

it said fuck you, at least one of them did

            • Joey H

oh i thought it said man eater, maybe it was a shirt she had on recently.who knows shes a piece of garbage

              • A.D.

I think she had multiple shirts

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Jordan’s ex-wife is hideous, she shouldn’t have been complaining that her ex-husband was doing anything.

    • BigBlueAL

Speaking of Jordan, his wife is not hot at all. Robin Givens played her in that horrible made-for-TV movie, now that is someone Jordan shouldve married, just ask Mike Tyson (btw she looked amazing in Boomerang, 100 times hotter than Halle Berry in that movie)….

      • Ivan

No way. Robin Givens was slightly average at best. Halle Berry is just great. In Jungle Fever she played the most good looking crackhead I,ve ever seen.

    • Newman

My guess as to why they’re pissed when their husbands cheat is that they’re married and probably have kids together. Just a shot in the dark though

      • Ivan

Yea but come on, Which big time athlete doesn’t cheat. To me, he married you and picked out if a bunch of females. To the athlete he thinks your special no matta what. So all ther women he fuck with are just stanks.

    • murphy

thats exactly why athletes should not get married. if youre rich and famous, whats the point?

      • Joey H

        I.E. derek jeter

        • BigBlueAL

Jeter is definitely the fuckin man…..

          • Joey H

jeter has crushed plenty of pussies, jessica alba, mariah carey and that one from MTV

        • murphy

the mans a genius. “oh im rich, ladys think im sexy and i own new york city, home of some of the hottest ladies ever… maybe i should play the field”

          • BigBlueAL

Thats why he is my hero….

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Mark Teixeira got owned on that 3-1 pitch.

  • A.D.

so Gary Matthews & the biggest bench contract will get to play?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

It’s amazing how both Los Angeles franchises made two of the dumbest free agent deals in recent memory (Juan Pierre to the Dodgers and Gary Matthews Jr. to the Halos).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Bobby Abreu making a wall catch? Something is going on…

    • A.D.

With Aceves pitching well so far tonight (2 innings) maybe the team likes Sid and wants him to keep his job

    • BigBlueAL

      Gotta protect his pitcher’s No-Hitter!!!!

  • A.D.

Is X playing RF after all, cause someone made a catch against the wall

  • BigBlueAL

BTW, this guy has the 8th hottest sports wife:

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I still can’t get past Clay Buchholz’s chic.

    • A.D.

I dont want to talk about it

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Wow, what the hell is with Vladdy? He can not run in full strides at all.

  • A.D.

Seriously why is Vlad playing the OF, yeah he has the arm, but he hobbles everywhere

  • BigBlueAL

C’mon ARod you gotta be fuckin kiddin me….

  • Newman

BTW Jamal, doesn’t today mark the start of you caring about the results of games? I’m pretty sure I remember you saying that August is your starting point

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Yup, right around here. My marker is usually six weeks to go in the season but since we’re in third, every game really does start to matter. Scoreboard watching should wait until September.

  • BigBlueAL

I guess this week Cano thinks its April again….

  • BigBlueAL

Damn there goes the No-Hitter, I was so sure Ponson was goin to make history tonight….

  • Steve H

Sorry, but for Big Papi’s fame, $, etc, his wife ain’t hot. And look at Papelboner’s wife without the spray on tan. Woof woof

    http://soxanddawgs.com/?p=3699

    • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos

Those are some ugly skanks right there…

  • Newman

Here’s the real Fatson we know and hate

    • Doug

      Wow, he escaped.

      • Newman

Choney really bailed us out there

  • BigBlueAL

So Ponson wont throw a no-hitter, but the shutout is still in tact….

  • zzzzz

do the yanks pitch out way more than other teams?

  • A.D.

Wonder if Pudge and Jeter talk hitting

    • BigBlueAL

      LMFAO

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I hope Girardi has the bullpen warming up to start the sixth. With the 3-4-5 up and the way Ponson ended the last two innings, not a good combo.

    • BigBlueAL

Robertson was up during the 5th inning.

  • BigBlueAL

    Pudge fitting right in offensively.

  • Newman

    Melky being Melky

  • A.D.

    Sir SID Crusing

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

God Dammit, we have to pitch against Chris Davis (1.018-OPS, 10-HR, 9-2B, .369-IsoP in his first 117-PA in the Majors) in Arlington? Booo!

    • A.D.

      Yay for my fantasy team??

  • A.D.

Damon has 33% of tonight’s hits

  • A.D.

He was safe, bad tag, throw was there

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Hey, what is the story behind the game thread title?

    • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

      Chone Figgins?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

        Ohhhhhh.

  • A.D.

Big G either strikes out or flys out

  • BigBlueAL

Is there still time for Cashman to trade for another few hitters….

  • Steve

Has anyone been listening to the radio lately?

    “THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL!!!!

    Really?

“THE ANGELS WILL BE IN THE WORLD SERIES, WRITE IT DOWN!!!!!”

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....8;type=reg

    21st in OBP

    22nd in OPS

“Well, they’re a scrappy, NL style team. Thats not how they score runs”

    17th in runs scored.

“Well, Scioscia has them doing all the little things, they don’t beat themselves”

    11th in Fielding PCT

    “They can pitch”

9th in ERA (6th in AL)

I’m not knocking them, they’re a good team. But they’re not the 1927 Yankees. They just happen to be very hot right now, but they have a bad stretch or two coming.

    • A.D.

      and a pretty bad division

think if we played the As & Mariners 18 times a season each

    • Steve H

I agree, they are getting quite a bit of smoke blown up their asses. And I hate to say it, but the Sox have owned them in the playoffs the last few years. Though the Teixera trade was big, they did have Izturis hitting 3rd before the trade was made. Think about that…….

    • BigBlueAL

Picking up Teixeira should help the offensive numbers a bit though.

      • Steve

A bit. He replaced a good player in Kotchman at 1B, though. So to see the net effect you have to look at both.

Kotchman has an OPS of around .800 and Tex has an OPS of around .900. Thats a difference of .100 OPS, or about one base every 10 AB’s.

        Thats not a huge difference.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

    Per Chad Jennings:

Bottom fourth: Best throw I’ve seen in a very, very long time. Matt Carson just gunned Kevin Melillo out at home plate from deep right field, and did it on the fly. I was positive it was a sacrifice fly and so was everyone here in the press box. It takes quite a bit to make an entire press box gasp, but Carson just made it happen. Unreal.

    Mike was right, 80-arm.

    • A.D.

Aceves can’t avoid the bad inning at AAA

  • Steve H

Any report on whether Ponson was drinking pre-game? Is he better on or off the sauce?

    • Steve H

And if we get 7 shutout innings from Sidney freaking Ponson, and can’t find a way to win shit should hit the fan. Sidney the Stopper!!

  • BigBlueAL

Pete Abraham just wrote that Girardi now says he hopes for Wang to be available to pitch by October, not September. Sigh….

    • Steve H

Well if he does pitch in October, won’t we all be happy?

      • Jeremy

That would be nice. But we don’t need him coming back and losing a playoff game. His psyche would be wrecked. He beat himself up all last winter. I just hope he’s okay. I’m still pissed about that base running shiet.

      • A.D.

with Brack in the Hawai’ian winter league??

Just kidding, yes we would, no reason to push anything on wang though

    • Steve

Ouch. We need him for the stretch run.

      • BigBlueAL

        My thoughts exactly.

  • BigBlueAL

I still cant get over Cano being thrown out on that play….

  • Thurman

I’d like to state that I called 7 nice innings out of Ponson on the thread earlier today.

  • BigBlueAL

Normally I would be happy that the other team’s starting pitcher is throwing a shutout and is about to be taken out, but the Angels bullpen is just as good as their starting rotation…

    • BigBlueAL

Nevermind Santana goin back out for the 8th.

    • Thurman

      arredondo is a freakin beast

  • BigBlueAL

    Great at-bat Melky.

  • BigBlueAL

Jack Cust just hit a HR off Okajima in the 8th to tie the game 1-1.

    • Steve H

Maybe the Sox should have picked up some relief help after all

  • BigBlueAL

Oh boy here we go with Mo in a non-save situation…

  • batty

Now if Joba was pitching the 8th inning…. jk

    • Steve H

Joba? What about Farnsworth? Well if you look past K-Rod’s save #’s, he hasn’t been great this year. Hopefully Mo can keep it to 1.

  • BigBlueAL

This is getting fucking ridiculous with Mo now…

  • Jeremy

There is no way they should lose this game.

  • BigBlueAL

Its gotten to the point where I dont want to even bother making the playoffs cause the Yankees dont have a snowball’s chance in hell of ever beating the Angels anyway and that would be their opponent since the Yankees will most likely make it as a WC, that is if they dont go 0-10 vs the Angels durin the regular season….

  • batty

Dumbfounded. Shocked. That one really, really hurt – worst loss all year.

  • dkidd

    k-rod is seriously annoying

  • Jeremy

can you believe Ponson pitches a GEM and they lose?

So much for the “we’re losing because our 4th and 5th starters suck” theory

  • mike

when you get 7 innings and 2 hits allowed out of ponson you need to win that game….just very disappointing from the yanks

    • Jeremy

It’s almost unforgiveable. I have no faith in sir sid but he pitched his heart out against the ANGELS and they didn’t win.

That sucks. I’m sorry Sid. Truly.

  • Steve H

On the remote chance that Girardi looks at this site, can someone please post Mo’s stats in save/non-save situations? We get 7 innings out of our starter, our pen has been lights out. Why go to Mo in the 9th. And I don’t want to hear that as the home team you don’t keep your closer in the pen, because in this cause, our closer sucks in non-save situations.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Mariano Rivera is the best relief pitcher in the history of baseball, what idiot wouldn’t bring him in? I’ll take my chances with that unbelievably small sample size with Mariano Rivera on the mound.

      • Steve H

When’s the last time he pitched well in a non-save situation? We weren’t hitting anyway, so odds of extra innings were pretty good, and the bullpen rested.

    • Joey

it’s about using your best pitcher available in high leverage (not just save) situations. We shouldn’t have lost this game, but you can’t blame Joe for using Mo in this situation, especially when many people (including myself) wanted Girardi to use Mo more not just in conventional save situations like Torre always did, but other important game changing innings. It hasn’t worked so far, but if there is one person in that bullpen that I would want to pitch any inning for me we all know who that would be without the slightest hesitation. Maybe it’ll work next time

    • BigBlueAL

This loss is all on the offense, not on Mo and certainly not on Girardi for bringing in Mo.

  • dkidd

jeff karstens: 6 scoreless innings and a win for the pirates

    welcome to the national league!

  • Jeremy

Yeah Girardi and Mo deserve blame but where the F was the offense? Sound asleep.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

What in God’s name did Girardi do?

      • Joey

It’s funny, during the win streak everything was just peachy, and we hit a rough patch (against a pretty damn good LAA and a pesky Orioles team) and everything and everyone is second guessed

  • Bryan

When will Joe learn that you CANNOT bring Mo into a non save situation, I have to think that Veras or Edwar might have held down the 9th in a 0-0 situation. Just look at the splits between save and non-save situation stats!

    • Joey

you’re overreacting. see replys to comments above

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

When will people learn the meaning of the term “SMALL SAMPLE SIZE”?

      • Steve H

        PA runs ER
        save situation 2358 141 131
        non-save situation 1255 94 85

Running these numbers through the t-test and we become 95% confident that Mariano allows runs at a greater rate during a non-save situation than a save situation.

This is not a small sample size.

  • Steve H

Of the eight runs Rivera has allowed in 48 1/3 innings this season, all but one have come in non-save situations.

    • http://salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

It was on RAB that one of the writers was discussing how he sucks outside the 9th inning with a small lead, just this afternoon…

      • Steve H

        The facts are ummm, facts.

  • BigBlueAL

I tell you whats really alarming, check out the Home records for Tampa, Boston, Chicago, Minnesota and Anaheim (all the teams in the AL with better records than the Yankees) compared to the Yankees at 34-26.. The first 3 teams mentioned all have lost only 16 games at home heading into tonight while the Twins have lost 20 and the Angels 21. They all except for the Angels have more wins at home than the Yankees, and the Yankees have played more games at home than all of them….

    • BigBlueAL

I only mention this cause it is annoying when you hear announcers talk about how tough it is to win at Yankee Stadium when you are the road team and how players automatically supposedly get nervous and shit in their pants when playing at Yankee Stadium as the road team. It aint happening this year apparently….

  • Steve H

As good as the 7 ip and 2 hits look, if this were a patient team, Sir Sid wouldn’t have lasted 3 innings. 96 pitches, 48 balls, 48 strikes. 4 walks, 1k. I’d still like this to be his last start, anything more and we’re playing with fire.

  • stuart

good game by the offense.. Giambi’s under 200 BA with RISP is just bad luck this yr. is that accurate analysis???

this team cannot get big hits, it has been a whole season problem, and I am suppose to believe it is just bad luck??

this offense is just league average look at the #’s.. This is not going to get it done…Should I be thinking differently?

    thanks…

  • Jake

I hope there’s some good news out of Down on the Farm tonight. A couple homers from Ajax. A shutout from one of our starters. The return of Humberto. Something to make me feel better about the Yanks right now.

  • BigBlueAL

On the bright side, the Rays, Red Sox and Twins all won tonight…..

    • Steve H

Sweet, i was looking for a reason to drink. F’ing Bobby Crosby
