Trenton walks-off with a win

Game 117: Escape from LAnaheim
Yanks leave Anaheim empty handed

Usually I like to update the standings for each affiliate once a month or so, but I haven’t done it all this year. Today’s as good a day to start as any; standings are coming into today and do not reflect today’s results.

Oh, and make sure you check out Chad Jennings’ great write-up on Matt Carson. Awesome stuff.

Triple-A Scranton was rained out. Syracuse doesn’t come back to town all season, so I’m guessing they’ll make this one up during the mutual off-day tomorrow. SWB has the best record in all of AAA at 75-48. They lead the IL North Division by 1 game over the PawSox with 21 games remaining.

Double-A Trenton (3-2 win over Akron, walk-off style) 72-47 with a commanding 9.5 game lead in the EL North division … they’ve got 20 games left after today
Reegie Corona & Austin Jackson: both 0 for 4 – Corona K’ed all four at-bats & committed not one, not two, but three throwing errors … talk about having a bad game … Ajax K’ed
Kevin Russo & Colin Curtis: both 1 for 4 – Russo K’ed twice, Curtis once
Chris Malec: 3 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B – had been 5 for his previous 33 (.152)
PJ Pilittere: 0 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB
Cody Ehlers: 0 for 3, 2 K – now hitting .199 in 341 at-bats this year … yikes
Edwar Gonzalez: 1 for 1, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI – pinch-hit walk-off homer with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th
Frankie Cervelli & James Cooper: both 0 for 2, 1 BB – Cervelli K’ed
Steven White: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, , 1 WP, 2-7 GB/FB – what a miserable season he’s having
Kevin Whelan: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1-1 GB/FB- that’s some quality relief right there
Zack Kroenke: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 3-2 GB/FB – picked two runners off first

High-A Tampa (6-4 loss to Clearwater) 60-57, 9.5 GB in the FSL West with 20 games left after today
Luis Nunez: 5 for 5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SB – on a 17 for 46 tear (.367)
Eduardo Nunez & Kevin Smith: both 1 for 5, 1 K – Nunez drove in a run
Josh Kreuzer & Tommy Baldridge (33): both 1 for 3, 1 HBP – Kreuzer K’ed … Baldridge scored a run
Seth Fortenberry: 2 for 5, 1 K
Kyle Anson: 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 11 PB
Mitch Hilligoss & Tim Battle: both 0 for 4 – Hilligoss K’ed … Battle swiped a bag & scored a run
Wilkins DeLaRosa: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 8-3 GB/FB, 1 E (throwing) – very nice High-A debut
Grant Duff: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1-1 GB/FB
Phil Bartlewski: 1.1 Ip, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 2-2 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston had a scheduled off day. They’re 67-50 on the year, but they’re 5.5 GB in the Sally League Southern Division with 22 games left in their season.

Short Season Staten Island had their game postponed due to rain; they’ll probably play two tomorrow. SI’s 31-20 with a 3.5 game lead in the NY-PL McNamara division. They’ve got 25 games plus the All-Star break left.

The Rookie GCL Yanks had a scheduled off day. They’re 20-21 and 6.5 GB in the GCL North division with 17 games left to play.

Malec got mad his average dropped under 300

Are there wild cards in the minors?

    • Mike A.

No. Most leagues are split up into 2 divisions, and the top 2 teams in each division will play in a semi-final, with the winners then facing off the league title.

    • jeff

Doesn’t apply to the Yankees, but the California league has a wild card.

  • D.B.

wow im surprised tampa has a winning record..

    • A.D.

They have a pretty good ace in Z-Mac

  • A.D.

Per Chad Jennings article on Carson, I’m a little suprised theyre not giving him a chance shot now, he’s crushed lefties this season, and can play all 3 outfield spots, has a great arm, could be a good platoon player.

I imagine they keep him as a outfielder on the 40 man, but I don’t know all the priorities, and this could just be a fluke season

Not surprise, TB might use him in the stretch run.

    When is Hughes pitching?

    • TurnTwo

you wonder if they’ll call him up to take IPK’s spot in the rotation, and let him throw his 85-90 pitches from the Minnesota mound…

      • A.D.

cant say i’d mind that, but I doubt it. My guess they’d send Pavano up first given they care about protecting him less

        • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

i.e. The words “protect” and “Pavano” haven’t been uttered by anyone connected to the Yankees since 2005.

Ugh, that made no sense. Meant “uttered in the same sentence.”

I was at the Trenton game today to see the Akron starter, Frank Hermann, who was a Star Ledger All State player when I was a frosh at the same high school. He was an absolute beast today if you take Malec out of the equation. A-Jax was the only person who got around on his fastball. He had 8 ks and didn’t walk a man until the eighth, when they should have taken him out anyway. The difference him and White was was like night and day. I don’t really get what White’s appeal is. He has awful awful mound demeanor. Everything bothers him. He couldn’t spot his fastball, so he ended up using his change way too much. Whelan was lights out though. And A Jax is really graceful in center. I did notice that he has a little hitch with change-ups, though.

Can anyone guess whether Wilkins De La Rosa is a likely target in the Rule V draft this offseason? Since he just made his High-A debut , i would think the lefty has remained “off the grid.” Rosa has impressed and the promotion is deserved. I think he’s a sleeper for breakout next season.

Any thoughts on this young man?

    • Mike A.

I’m not sure if he’s Rule V eligible this year, but he might be. I think he could sneak through unprotected this winter, Pedro Strop made it through for the Rox two years ago (also a recent convert), and he has a much better arm and was a bit more polished.
