Game 69 Spillover Thread

By

In case you missed it: Sabathia left the game in the second with tightness in his left bicep. Listed as day to day, no test scheduled. If they’re not going to run any tests on a $161M pitcher, I’m not worried.

  1. Anyone says:

I’m going to pray tonight that CC is okay

  2. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    hope CC is ok.

  3. Bill says:

Thank God for Alfredo Aceves. Hopefully he can get through the 5th. Robertson hasn’t pitched in a while so he could go 6 and 7. Bruney and Rivera to finish it off if we still have a close lead.

    • whozat says:

      for real.

I wonder if Hughes can still throw 80 pitches or so? I could see them stacking Hughes and Aceves for CC’s next scheduled start.

      • whozat says:

And by “still” I mean “right now”, since he’s been going shorter stints recently, it seems that he might not have that endurance right now, but would need to build back up.

        • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

Nice point AJ vs Johnson on offense :)

          remember the good ole days?
When we didn’t know what to do with six starters?

  4. cc-cy-young says:

i am sure he will be fine

  5. Anyone says:

Tex needs a HR, so does Alex. It’s been a while.

  6. Eric says:

Great job by Aceves as usual.

  7. Dela G says:

if the yankees win this game aceves deserves the championship belt

  8. Jamal G. says:

As Brett Tomko is warming up, let’s just get this out of the way: You are not smarter than Joe Girardi; Joe Girardi thought of using Phil Hughes just as you did; Joe Girardi does not think Brett Tomko is a better pitcher than Phil Hughes; Joe Girardi and his coaching staff have a reason or two for putting in Brett Tomko over Phil Hughes in the fifth inning.

Please, think of these before you post the “ZOMG, WTF IS GIRARDI DOING??!?1?!?1 I WANT HUGHES!!!11″ crap.

  9. Anyone says:

Ace has been, our scouting doesn’t suck after all people!

  10. Dela G says:

did anyone check out those three hot girls YES just showed?

    dayum

  11. Bill says:

They want Hughes to pitch multiple innings for Wang’s start. Then they probably hold him back a couple days if CC can’t make his next scheduled start. I would still go to Robertson, who hasn’t pitched in the past 2 days, over Tomko though.

  12. John says:

Cmon Tomko, just dont cough up a run

  13. Charlie says:

Are you kidding me? Not Brett Tomko. Him serving up 3 runs is going to be very painful for all of us. He sucks. Hughes should be good to go, why tomko?

  14. BigBlueAL says:

Damn the Marlins broadcast just said Tomko in his career as a starter vs the Marlins is 8-2 with an ERA just above 3. Ill say this for him, he is always around 92-93 with his fastball with decent breaking stuff.

  15. Mike Axisa says:

First runs the bullpen allowed in eight days.

  16. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    son of a biatch.

  17. ChrisS says:

    Brett Tomko, however, sucks.

  18. cc-cy-young says:

ok so can we start giving girardi shit now

  19. Evan says:

    Aww, dang it.

  20. RAB poster says:

    God I hate Bombko.

  21. whooboy says:

    Anyone surprised?

  22. Eric says:

    Tomko sucking as usual.

  23. John says:

damnit Tomko…i thought he would’ve finished the inning.

  24. cc-cy-young says:

    tomko sucks

  25. Dela G says:

    DAMNIT!

  26. Bill says:

Should have been Robertson in there. Tomko is trash. Use Coke on back to back days if you have to, just don’t bring in Tomko ever again except with a 5+ run lead!

  27. whooboy says:

From almost-DFA’d to second out of the pen in a close game. Huh?

    • Moshe Mandel says:

In the 5th inning. They want Coke and Robertson to be one inning guys. SO if Hughes and Aceves are unavailable, Robertson, Coke, and Bruney, are the 6th, 7th, and 8th, and Mo the 9th, someone needs to pitch the 5th.

  28. charlespoet says:

Now it will be interesting to see if the bats come to life and can score. A nice crooked number would be preferable but a run will do.

  29. NYQ says:

I hope they DFA Tomko. We could use Shelley Duncan or Melancan instead of this scrub.

    • whozat says:

The fact that you mentioned Shelley robbed you of any credibility. Juan Miranda? Hey, maybe. John Rodriguez? Yeah, could be. Melancon? Totally.

  30. Dela G says:

i know this is ill timed, but will ramirez ever get called back up or alabadejo?

  31. Slu says:

There was no other move to make.

Tomko does stink though, but this is role in the pen.

    • whooboy says:

There are other pitchers in the pen..

    • Charlie says:

NOT AT ALL!!! His role should be mop up duty in blowouts, not in even remotely close games. There are other arms in the pen Girardi coulda used

      • Bill says:

Exactly. He could have went to Robertson there. I know they don’t want to use Hughes back to back but anybody is a better option than Tomko out there!

    • Slu says:

I think if you are going to keep him on the team, then he needs to pitch in some high-leverage situations. You can make an argument for Roberston, but if you are on your second relief pitcher to start the 5th inning with a lead. And you need this guy to go multiple innings, then it has to be Tomko. If you don’t use him here, then you need to get him off the team.

  32. Eric says:

So when are they going to bring Melancon back and DFA Tomko?

  33. John says:

I finally started liking Tomko but then he prompt;y gives up the lead

  34. cc-cy-young says:

tomko is washed up they should dfa him and call up melancan and let him develop against mlb talent

    • whozat says:

Whatever. Then you’d start screaming every time he gave up a run.

      • Eric says:

Not really. If Melancon gets hit, it’s all part of his development. Tomko is 36 years old. He has no business being part of this team if he doesn’t produce.

      • cc-cy-young says:

that is the idea behind letting him develop young pitchers are going to give up runs, tomko is 36 years old been around for a while

    • Charlie says:

washed up?? He was never good at all. He shoulda been DFAd a while ago

  35. Mike Axisa says:

Kid breaks out the 3-2 hook. Ballsy.

  36. BigBlueAL says:

I hope the offense realizes the game is tied now and that they have to actually score some more runs this game if they want to win.

  37. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

I wonder if well see sergio mitre hes been pitching preety good in scranton.

    • Accent Shallow says:

Mitre had Tommy John on July 15th. I’d imagine the Yankees will give him more time in the minors to rehab, no?

He has looked pretty good for Scranton, and groundballers are always nice to have.

  38. Mike Axisa says:

Yes, Tomko blew the lead, but it’s the sixth inning. Sheesh, relax.

  39. Ed says:

    Tomko sucks

  40. Moshe Mandel says:

For all those saying they could have gone to someone else, kindly map out the rest of the game in a way that doesn’t have the team running out of relievers should the game go to extras.

    • Bill says:

Robertson goes 5 and 6, Coke goes 7, Bruney 8, Rivera 9. You still have Tomko and Hughes out there if needed. If you don’t want Robertson going 2, use Tomko in the 6th when he doesn’t have to pitch to their best hitter.

      • Charlie says:

        +10

      • whooboy says:

Agreed. Having enough relievers for extras wasn’t really a concern until Tomko tied it.

      • Zach says:

so its not longer about Tomko pitching, its Tomko pitching to Hanley. Why dont u just say intentionally walk him?

      • Moshe Mandel says:

Coghlan’s hit made Hanley come up in the inning. Otherwise he would not have faced him. And I doubt they want to use Hughes back to back days.

        • Bill says:

If Hughes is the last resort in extras then they have to go to him. I mapped out saving both Tomko and Hughes for extras. What’s wrong with using Robertson for 2? I know he’s done it in the past. He hasn’t pitched in this series, day off tomorrow, and he wouldn’t pitch Tuesday with Wang-Hughes going.

    • Slu says:

Exactly. If Hughes is not available and you are starting the 5th inning with your second reliever and he needs to go multiple innings, this is the move.

    • Eirias says:

Who has their side session tomorrow?

    • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

You wanna save a better arm for the eleventyth inning???

  41. charlespoet says:

This is what I was alluding to earlier on the previous thread. They had hit, hit, walk, hit, scoring 3 runs in the second. Since then, barely a flicker.

It seems that they get a little complacent and tend to lose their plate discipline – swinging at the first strike when up 2-0, trying to pull a pitch, or chasing bad pitches.

How do you lose your focus that quickly? By now as a team you should have seen all of the pitches the pitcher has, you are just left with figuring out location or his pattern. But even then, you should be able to adjust.

Offensively, this team and the past 4 years can just be very frustrating.

    • John says:

How do you know they lost focus?

      • charlespoet says:

What else could it be? did the Marlins starter suddenly become better than he was in the first 3 innings when they were hitting him? Just guessing. But they are down 1 run now in a game that had 9-2 written all over it.

  42. Charlie says:

wow, playing with fire here leaving bombko in

  43. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    comon tomko are u serioussssss,

  44. Accent Shallow says:

Jesus Christ, where did that ball land? The Gulf of Mexico?

  45. J says:

    tomko the white berroa.

  46. cjc says:

hey maybe he can pitch in the hr derby
    fuck

  47. Mike Axisa says:

That was a hanger and a half.

  48. BigBlueAL says:

OK I havent said shit about Tomko, actually complimented him a bit earlier, but now fuck him!!!!

  49. RAB poster says:

    Tomko REALLY sucks.

  50. Bill says:

OH GOOD GOD! WHY WAS HE STILL IN THERE? ROBERTSON, COKE, HUGHES, ANYBODY ELSE FOR GOD’S SAKE!

  51. Dela G says:

    oh my god

    i hate brett tomko

he can’t effing finish the damn innings

  52. Bill says:

tomko needs to go, kontos should replace him

    • Zach says:

George Kontos is a starter no? B-Konter

      • Accent Shallow says:

I’m under the impression that he profiles best as a reliever in the future.

        Guess we’ll see.

        • Zach says:

I dont know, but bringing him up now for Tomko he’d be Hughes #2 in the bullpen. Starter with 0 relief appearances, cant be used back to back, have to be careful, etc

  53. John says:

Ok time for the offense to score some more runs now.

  54. Charlie says:

THIS is why I fucking hate Joe Girardi. TOMKO FUCKING SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LEARN FROM IT YOU FUCKING DUMBASS!! Motherfucker, that is how you lose games. leave in a 36 year old scrub who can’t pitch under pressure to give up the lead

    • Eric says:

It has nothing to do with pressure. He can’t pitch period.

    • J says:

can’t blame girardi for the 1st HR. Heck can’t even blame him for 2nd HR. Tomko had 2 outs and had been looking good before giving those bombs up.

But yeah, he shouldn’t have pitched another inning.

  55. Slu says:

I have been defending the move to use him, but I can’t defend the choice to keep him on the team.

  56. whooboy says:

    Map that one out

  57. Charlie says:

    FUCK YOU TOMKO!!

  58. AsianShuutoHeat says:

    At least Volstad is 0-2?
    Knock on wood….

  59. Eric says:

They’re lucky to be down only one after two innings of Tomko.

  60. RAB poster says:

W/our offense playing so bad that could very well be the ballgame.

  61. whooboy says:

Go to your best pitchers first. If Fish come back and we have to use Tomko for extra innings, at least you had your best guys in there. Instead now we have too many relievers and not enough innings.

  62. Evan says:

Once again, the text poll is a joke.

    Come on, offense.

  63. Bill says:

I THINK GIRARDI PICKS WHICH PITCHER COMES INTO THE GAME BY DRAWING NAMES OUT OF A HAT! THE GUY IS CLUELESS!

  64. BigBlueAL says:

Nice. First pitch was a ball, then Melky swings at 2 balls in a row and flies out.

  65. John says:

It’s game 69, it’s going to go back and forth. You give, you take.

  66. Accent Shallow says:

Gardner, you’re no good to us with fly balls.

(Less good with IF popups, but you get the point)

  67. Mike Axisa says:

Matsui pinch hitting vs the lefty?

    Does not compute.

    • Accent Shallow says:

There’s no RHB on the bench, unless Pena or Berroa count, right?

    • ChrisS says:

His .920 OPS against LHPs certainly contributes to the decision, but who else could they use? Berroa? Pena? Damon?

      • Mike Axisa says:

Two outs in the inning and you’d have to pinch run for Matsui if he got on anyway. Let Berroa hit there, and use Matsui later when he can do some damage.

  68. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

felipe and matty alou are ma grandma cousins :)

  69. John says:

I used to love when our black holes in the bottom of the order weren’t balck holes.

  70. BigBlueAL says:

    Nice inning by the offense.

  71. jsbrendog says:

why the hell was tomko in? is hughes not available?

    • V says:

For the one millionth fucking time, no, Hughes is not available.

Hughes is not prepared to be a reliever.

      Get that through your skulls.

      • jsbrendog says:

ok, for the first time, go fuck yourself, because i came here to find out so i dont give a shit if a bunch of ppl asked already.

second of all, hughes is not prepared to be a reliever? ok. then he hsould have come in and pitched from the FIRST INNING when cc went down because THATS WHAT STARTERS DO jackass.

third, i have been away and didnt watch the game and because they lost didnt even give a shit enough to read about it.

        so, in conclusion, gfys

    • Eric says:

No he’s not. He pitched yesterday and he’s never pitched on back-to-back days.

    • Bill says:

Probably not. But Robertson and Coke were plenty available for the 5th, 6th, and 7th. There is no reason to bring Tomko into a close ballgame unless he’s the last resort.

  72. V says:

Yankees’ fans are so fucking annoying.

  73. Eric says:

Nice seven pitch, 1-2-3 inning fellas.

  74. John says:

That was a quick 7 pitches.

  75. J says:

is phil coke going in AGAIN? 4th time in the last 5 days. When the hell did Torre come back?

  76. charlespoet says:

right now this team is just not a good team.

And that makes 10 straight retired. Where did the bats from the first three innings go? This has another series loss written all over it. not good.

    • Dela G says:

i think you might be on drugs

    • V says:

Yes, it’s a horrible team. Stop watching the games. Please.

      • Ed says:

Can someone shut this person up?

      • jsbrendog says:

        stop commenting please.

      • charlespoet says:

I don’t think I said they were horrible, just that currently they are not a good team as is playing well. Sorry I misspoke. But what in the last 10 batters have you seen that indicates they are having productive AB’s?

Dela G, how can I be on drugs, are we not watching the same team and game?

        • V says:

          Um, it’s 10 at bats?

          Who gives a shit?

There are times where they have 10 at bats where they dominate, and there are times where they have 10 at bats where they’re dominated.

The guy’s throwing a decent game.

          • charlespoet says:

So you could not say that instead of making all the nasty toned comments you’ve posted? But, if I am not mistaken that is 10 lossed outs leaving only 6 remaining. Do the odds suddenly change over the last 6? I have not looked at Florida’s bull pen status but I am guessing they are not as bad as the nationals.

          • Ed says:

            U are insufferable

        • Dela G says:

this is a top 5 in the league team. You weren’t saying anything when they scored 26 runs in 3 games against the mets, right?

          • charlespoet says:

15 runs against the Mets, 9 off of Santana will not happen again in that very combination. But that game is the perfect example of what I am saying now. Everything went right, they piled on, stats look great. Against Washington, they struggled.

  77. J says:

lol tomko looks like he knows he’s gonna get DFAed.

    • jsbrendog says:

his reaction as soon as the second hr left the bat was basically, FU&(^#) my careers over!!

    • Accent Shallow says:

No complaints here, assuming Melancon is ready, or Albaladejo/Edwar are ready to be useful.

  78. BEISBOL says:

we’ve seen the last of tomko.

  79. Dela G says:

i do feel sorry for tomko though. He’s a great guy, but has never lived up to his career hype that he had as a lightening armed righty

  80. Moshe Mandel says:

The thing where Coke points at the sky on every ball in the air is retarded.

  81. Ed says:

    Tomko sucks. Where was Hughes

    • Zach says:

seriously dude, look up and read the 10 different discussions on it

    • John says:

Once again, he cannot pitch on consecutive days!

    • Accent Shallow says:

Hughes is shadowing Wang. Since Wang isn’t a large black man, Hughes isn’t pitching today.

    • Eric says:

This is starting to get annoying.

    • V says:

    • Dela G says:

hughes can’t pitch in back to back games

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Do people here think they’re smarter than Girardi or something?

      • V says:

Apparently so. We have 1000 future MLB managers running around here. They know exactly how to coax that extra inning out of a pitcher, and how to make sure every pitcher pitches 1-2-3 innings everytime out, and would make sure ARod never goes into a slump, etc.

      • V says:

Apparently so. We have 1000 future MLB managers running around here. They know exactly how to coax that extra inning out of a pitcher, and how to make sure every pitcher pitches 1-2-3 innings everytime out, and would make sure ARod never goes into a slump, etc.

      • Charlie says:

yea, why not?? He really does not seem very smart at all.

        • JobaWockeeZ says:

So if you’re so much smarter who do you use? CC taken out early, Hughes already pitched, Aceves cannot pitch the whole game and there’s still a portion of the game to be pitched. You sue Tomko for 1-2 innings so you don’t overuse you’re bullpen. What’s your plan? Use everyone but Tomko so they cannot be sued tomorrow and tomorrow WANG pitches so you don’t know what’ll happen. So yeah that isn’t idiotic at all.

  82. ChrisS says:

apparently he’s going to empty the bullpen for no fucking reason.

  83. Ivan says:

    Isn’t Dave Robertson available?

  84. yankees=warriors says:

Is anyone else bothered by the YES commentators today?
I usually enjoy their free-talking, but come on, we’re losing here, do they have to be THAT happy?

  85. Charlie says:

it really, really sucks that we will probably lose this game. Its a crime that Girardi even let fucking tomko pitch 2 innings. Even worse if he isn’t DFA’d after this. He is completely useless

    • V says:

Because they’re down by 1 run with 2 innings to go.

If they win, will you promise to leave?

  86. Bill says:

So now we use Coke and Robertson, 2 innings too late.

To the guy who was worried about who will pitch in extras- Girardi is going to empty the bullpen anyway. Now Hughes really is the last resort after Bruney and Rivera. My plan had 2 pitchers left over AND WE PROBABLY STILL WOULD HAVE HAD THE LEAD!!!!!! I HATE JOE GIRARDI!

    • Moshe Mandel says:

I wasn’t worried about extras, but you need to leave some more pitchers, especially in the NL where you may need to pinch hit for a pitcher. Aceves was used, Hughes not available, and apparently Coke, after pitching on 3 out of 4 days, was only available for a couple of batters. So basically you have Robertson, Coke and Tomko to get you 5 innings to the 8th and Bruney. Not such a big deal to use Tomko.

  87. YankeeScribe says:

Boston, Tampa, Toronto, and Baltimore have already won today… :(

    • Charlie says:

yup, a loss means 4 back and the fuckin rays are catching up. thanks, girardi & tomko.

  88. BEISBOL says:

2/3 of the games against the Braves will be against pitchers they’ve never seen before: Hanson & Kawakami.

  89. Jose says:

Everyone needs to take a collective breath, one game will not decide the season. People are putting Hank Steinbrenner to shame with all the panic and blusterous speech.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

In our division one game just might.

      • Jose says:

We are still in line with the projections to win 93 games even with our start. We would have a safe spot in the wild card with those projections. I guarantee you we make the playoffs by more than one game.

    • Eric says:

I mostly agree, but four games to Washington/Florida isn’t “one game” anymore.

    • John says:

I agree…though these type of games are piling up

    • Evan says:

True, though they do need to play much better than they have the past couple of weeks, offense especially.

  90. Mike Axisa says:

Everyone needs to stop cursing at each other. We understand you’re frustrated, but show each other some respect.

    • J says:

      +1

      but fuck brett tomko

    • charlespoet says:

Is it always so brutal and unfriendly with everyone attacking every single comment? Kind of like the LoHud posters griping about every single pitch. Ironic!

  91. Mike Axisa says:

Is that an actual pin they’re wearing for Father’s Day, or is it embroidered on the jersey? A pin seems kinda dangerous, no?

    • Jose says:

That is what hurt CC’s bicep. It all makes sense now, some sick plot by Bud Selig and Theo Epstein, those sly dogs.

    • Dela G says:

i’m pretty sure its embroidered. I saw the astros game today, and there was no metal coming out of the pin.

  92. Charlie says:

wow, it should be 0-2. Fuck this inconsistent ump

  93. Accent Shallow says:

A walk to Hanley wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

  94. Eric says:

It’s insane that a few weeks ago people were so worried about this bullpen. Mo/Bruney/Ace/Robertson is a really filthy pen. It’d really be great if we get an effective Marte.

  95. Dela G says:

    well this sucks

  96. yankees=warriors says:

It doesn’t really matter if Girardi use the whole bullpen today, does it? Tomorrow is an off day.

    • Dela G says:

also, everyone knows that when wang pitches, hughes will give the pen a rest for basically another off day, so that’s a good thing

  97. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  98. BEISBOL says:

    game over.

  99. yankees=warriors says:

    Great, now it’s realloy over…

  100. Mike Axisa says:

Yep, Robertson could have worked two innings to these same batters earlier. Best laid plans…

  101. ChrisS says:

    Ugh.

  102. Evan says:

Crudmuffin. The throw didn’t help things, either.

  103. cjc says:

hey look the real bullpen is back

    awesome job by melky there

  104. John says:

Damn ump, gave Hanley two strikes.

  105. Accent Shallow says:

Terrible throw by Melky, and a lousy job backing up by Robertson. Argh.

  106. JobaWockeeZ says:

Girardi’s fault Posada missed the ball.

  107. BigBlueAL says:

    Pretty sad.

  108. Pastafarian says:

Not you too Robertson : [

  109. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:
