Game 72: Off The Schnide

Game 72 Spillover Thread

I don’t know about you guys, but when Alex Rodriguez lined that single into center to drive in two runs in the sixth yesterday, it felt like a tremendous weight came off my shoulders as I exhaled with relief. Cervelli’s homer was nice, don’t get me wrong, but there was much more on the line for Alex in that inning. Does that make sense? Eh, whatever. Anway, if that’s what it felt like for me, I can only imagine what it felt like for A-Rod and the rest of team.

Was Joe Girardi’s ejection and the ensuing rally enough to spark the team out of it’s offensive malaise? Everyone was all smiles when Mariano Rivera lined out to end the ninth, so maybe the team is feeling good about themselves and are ready to go on a little run. We can only hope.

Here’s the starting nine. Robbie Cano was originally slated to play and bat fifth as usual, but there was a change and now Ransom’s at second. Maybe Cody had a closed door meeting with Girardi and Cash and talked his way into the lineup? (I keed, I keed)

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Posada, C
Swisher, RF
Gardner, CF – ride the hot hand baby
Ransom, 2B
Andy Pettitte, SP

    • Will (the other one)

Heh, time to bring Vinsanity home, I guess…that team’s gonna miss the hell out of Courtney Lee, though.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Agreed. I don’t think the difference between Lee and Vince is big enough to justify all that extra money.

Vince is making 16.3, 17.3, and 18M the next three years.

        • Ivan

Yeah thats alot of mullah. I guess they felt hey, I rather spend 17 Mil on Vince, than spend 10-12 Mil on Hedo.

          • Mike HC

It was the length of the deals that was the deciding factor. You would rather overspend for Vince over 2 years, then have to give Hedo a 5 or 6 year deal. I’m sure Hedo is looking for a long deal. Orlando did not want to lock themselves into that lineup for the forseeable future. They wanted the flexibility. That is the way I see it.

        • Will (the other one)

Exactly, especially since it’s been a while since Vince had to play nice with a star actually bigger than his own. Kicking it around with J-Kidd and Richard Jefferson doesn’t exactly prepare him for trying to compete with Dwight and Jameer in a popularity contest he’ll never win, even if he’s going off for 25-10 every night.

Eh. I guess we’ll see, but I’m not sold on this one.

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I guess Cleveland traded for a Que and the Magic figured they should trade for a Que as well.

            • Ivan

              I guess.

Who would be more valuable to their new team, VC or Shaq?

              • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Probably Shaq. The upside of him over Ilgauskas is way bigger than the upgrade of VC over Lee.

                • Ivan

I agree. I still think the Cavs need one more player.

              • Mike HC

I think Vince will have a bigger impact. Without Hedo, the Magic were in desperate need of wing scoring.

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona

Nets get a great young player in Courtney Lee.

      • Mike HC

How did Lee get so overrated. This is a case of everyone calling someone underrated, until they become overrated. Lee is OK, but Vince will definitely be better than Lee for the next two years. And not only slightly better, considerably better.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

My calculation has Vince replacing not just Lee, but Lee AND Turkoglu.

          Sorry for the confusion.

  • Will (the other one)

So how do ppl want to see this nba draft shake out tonight? Personally I don’t think Curry will be an impact player in the NBA

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

The fact that Curry can shoot, but isn’t as slow or as awful as J.J. Redick, practically guarantees he’ll have an impact. His comp is Mo Williams, IMO.

My master list of desired picks at 8 is still, in order:
      Tyreke Evans
      Steph Curry
      Brandon Jennings
      Jrue Holiday
      Jordan Hill
      Johnny Flynn
      Earl Clark
      Demar Derozan
      Gerald Henderson

I want no part of Rubio, Thabeet, or Harden.

      • Ivan

Not a huge Curry fan but he’s a much better prospect than Reddick was. Plus, while Curry isn’t the greatest defender in the world, he’s much better in that spot than Reddick.

I think Holiday fits the Knicks the best. Clark would also fit the knicks as well under D’Antoni system. A SF with point guard skills who can shoot and is athletic and play multiple positions. D’Antoni love Diaw, so Clark could be Diaw 2.0.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

My irrational hope is that DeJuan Blair’s knees scare everyone off and he slides to us at #29.

          • Ivan

Blair wouldn’t be a bad pick at 29.

There’s reports that Jennings might slide out of of the top 20.

            • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

This draft is gonna be nuts.

              Wildcards galore.

  • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Apparently, rather than buy the #28 pick from the Timberwolves, the Knicks bought the #29 pick from the Lakers.

Ford has us taking Toney Douglas with the pick. The AP report that ESPN used says we’re looking at Jack McClintock.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/.....id=4285133

    • Ivan

I saw on the ny dailynews that the knicks might draft Gerald Henderson.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

He’s a bit of a reach at 8, but he’s a quality player. He won’t be bad, but I can’t foresee a scenario where there’s not someone still better on the board when we’re on the clock.

Richard Hayden: A message? What number did you call?
Tommy: Two, four, niner, five, six, seven…
Richard Hayden: I can’t hear you, you’re trailing off and did I catch a niner in there? Were you calling from a walkie-talkie?
      Tommy: No, it was cordless.
Richard Hayden: You know what? Don’t. Not here, not now

now, does Rubio get past minnesota? If he does I’d be worried the knicks might actually take him.

There is no earthly way Rubio doesn’t get drafted with one of these picks.

Hitting over .300 with a .360 OBP. He’s been great after the slow start. I’m still not sure he’s an everyday players, but I have little to back that up with. His OBP for righties (.360) and Lefties (.353) is very close, just last year in AAA. And once he’s on, he scores at a very high rate.

      http://www.baseball-reference......9&t=b

Don’t look at the SLG/OPS, he’s not that type of player. He’s a table setter, OBP and Runs Scored are his job and he does it well.

But Rubio has more potential offensively once he thickens out a bit. And I think Harden can become something like Ben Gordon, which isn’t the worst thing ever.

WRONG! Teixera is obviously not clutch. He should have driven in that run off of a struggling pitcher. Anyone notice that Mariano actually hit it into the outfield last night and Teixera has been unable to do so tonight? I wonder if we can trade him to the Indians as well.
