Game 72: Off The Schnide

I don’t know about you guys, but when Alex Rodriguez lined that single into center to drive in two runs in the sixth yesterday, it felt like a tremendous weight came off my shoulders as I exhaled with relief. Cervelli’s homer was nice, don’t get me wrong, but there was much more on the line for Alex in that inning. Does that make sense? Eh, whatever. Anway, if that’s what it felt like for me, I can only imagine what it felt like for A-Rod and the rest of team.

Was Joe Girardi’s ejection and the ensuing rally enough to spark the team out of it’s offensive malaise? Everyone was all smiles when Mariano Rivera lined out to end the ninth, so maybe the team is feeling good about themselves and are ready to go on a little run. We can only hope.

Here’s the starting nine. Robbie Cano was originally slated to play and bat fifth as usual, but there was a change and now Ransom’s at second. Maybe Cody had a closed door meeting with Girardi and Cash and talked his way into the lineup? (I keed, I keed)

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Posada, C
Swisher, RF
Gardner, CF – ride the hot hand baby
Ransom, 2B
Andy Pettitte, SP

Self-Promotion: Ben will be appearing on Pro Baseball Central tonight around 9:30 to talk about the Yanks and this weekend’s series against the Amazin’s. Click the link to listen in.

  1. GG says:

I agree completely about Alex; hes going to get hot sooner or later, and its gonna be niiiice

  2. yanke1313 says:

    A-Rod baby!

  3. JobaWockeeZ says:

We’re going to see Cody Ransom again? Wow I thought when he got injured I’d never have to see him again…

    • GG says:

crazy sad stuff, 50 is so young to go

    • Ivan says:

Im shocked. Again, majority of us grew up with the guy. I mean just a huge lost. R.I.P. Michael Jackson, one of the great entertainers of all time.

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

What are the odds that Farrah And Michael would die on the same day?
Tough day to be an icon of the 70′s or 80′s.

    • Will (the other one) says:

Heh, time to bring Vinsanity home, I guess…that team’s gonna miss the hell out of Courtney Lee, though.

      • Agreed. I don’t think the difference between Lee and Vince is big enough to justify all that extra money.

Vince is making 16.3, 17.3, and 18M the next three years.

        • Ivan says:

Yeah thats alot of mullah. I guess they felt hey, I rather spend 17 Mil on Vince, than spend 10-12 Mil on Hedo.

          • Mike HC says:

It was the length of the deals that was the deciding factor. You would rather overspend for Vince over 2 years, then have to give Hedo a 5 or 6 year deal. I’m sure Hedo is looking for a long deal. Orlando did not want to lock themselves into that lineup for the forseeable future. They wanted the flexibility. That is the way I see it.

        • Will (the other one) says:

Exactly, especially since it’s been a while since Vince had to play nice with a star actually bigger than his own. Kicking it around with J-Kidd and Richard Jefferson doesn’t exactly prepare him for trying to compete with Dwight and Jameer in a popularity contest he’ll never win, even if he’s going off for 25-10 every night.

Eh. I guess we’ll see, but I’m not sold on this one.

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Nets get a great young player in Courtney Lee.

  4. Will (the other one) says:

Was there ever any word on what the deal was with the Melky/Swish situation last night?

  5. yanke1313 says:

Hey Mike, Kelvin DeLeon went deep today. He’s hitting .667. Is there any chance that the Yanks call him up to SI?

  6. e mills says:

    off-topic, however, RIP Michael Jackson

  7. The Artist says:

I could have sworn that its spelled “Schnide”

  8. Am I the only one a little disappointed that it was Pettitte’s turn in the rotation and not AJ’s?

A Burnett-Lowe matchup would have been interesting theater. Free Agent Referendum Bowl I.

  9. GG says:

So how do ppl want to see this nba draft shake out tonight? Personally I don’t think Curry will be an impact player in the NBA

    • The fact that Curry can shoot, but isn’t as slow or as awful as J.J. Redick, practically guarantees he’ll have an impact. His comp is Mo Williams, IMO.

My master list of desired picks at 8 is still, in order:
      Tyreke Evans
      Steph Curry
      Brandon Jennings
      Jrue Holiday
      Jordan Hill
      Johnny Flynn
      Earl Clark
      Demar Derozan
      Gerald Henderson

I want no part of Rubio, Thabeet, or Harden.

  10. Apparently, rather than buy the #28 pick from the Timberwolves, the Knicks bought the #29 pick from the Lakers.

Ford has us taking Toney Douglas with the pick. The AP report that ESPN used says we’re looking at Jack McClintock.

  11. The Artist says:

About all this ejection stuff, its seems silly to make any direct connection between the two, but it does sure seem to work.

For a team that hyper-aware about its own shortcomings/failings, its probably a great way to change the subject. Create an enemy for the team to focus its frustrations on.

  12. Mike Axisa says:

Hah, Jeff Bennett broke his hand punching a door after allowing that hit to A-Rod yesterday. At least he was smart enough not to use his pitching hand.

  13. Mike Axisa says:

Holy crap moly, Jeff Goldblum died too?

  14. John says:

    Let’s one another tonight

  15. The Artist says:

From the “Where are they now” file, our old pal Jason Giambi.

  16. yanke1313 says:

    hughes for a inning tonight?

  17. Mike Axisa says:

    Offense!!! Early offense!!!

  18. Quikksand says:

Nice start for the Yankees, 2 ABs, 2 base hits.

  19. BigBlueAL says:

Here’s hoping the Yankees make me look good for benching Derek Lowe tonight in my fantasy team.

  20. Mike HC says:

Is it possible the 29th pick may be used as a trading chip to move up. I think a future knick deal is possible.

  21. Quikksand says:

Tex grounds to a DP, 1-0 Yankees.

  22. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Wow a fast run.

  23. BigBlueAL says:

Nothing to deflate a big inning like a GIDP.

  24. JobaWockeeZ says:

  25. John says:

  26. Mike Axisa says:

    Steep decline!!!

  27. The Artist says:

    YES!!!!!!! ALEX IS BACK!!!!

  28. Quikksand says:

GOOOOOOONE A-rod hits a 2 run HR to deep CF!

  29. yanke1313 says:

    Is that A-Rod?

  30. Stephen says:

you called it Mike. The weight might be off

  31. John says:

  32. Mike Axisa says:

That was no cheapie either. Dead center, big park, groundball pitcher.

  33. Quikksand says:

MY bad, it was a Solo HR.

  34. You can see Nick Swisher’s charisma from space.

  35. Ivan says:

    I thought A-Rod was finish.

  36. Dela G says:

man i jumped off my couch!

  37. Mike Axisa says:

Handsome Cody Ransom with a bases juiced…

  38. BigBlueAL says:

A hit with risp!!!! LOL Of course Ransom’s 1st ab since coming back is with the bases loaded and 2 outs.

  39. JobaWockeeZ says:

Haha Boston! How’s that OMFG WE HAVE DEPTH!!!!! working out?
Smoltz struggling early int he first inning. Nats winning 1-0, bases loaded with 1 out.

  40. Dela G says:

    a-rod is BACK BABY!

  41. yanke1313 says:

    Melky Mesa goes yard.

  42. Quikksand says:

2 runs, 5 hits for the Yankees this inning.

  43. Drew says:

Ransom just missed that foul, great inning none the less.

  44. SouthernYankeeFan says:

ha Ransom picks up where he left off.

  45. pat says:

Unfortunately homeruns hit in the 1st-3rd innings don’t count. Especially not for Arod.

  46. John says:

    No RBI’s with RISP today!!!!

  47. The Artist says:

I just love the comments you get on the internet. Michael Jackson dies, and people write this-

Ricky Pope: “Bye Bye you scumbag. Have a nice time in hell.”

Slammer: “We lost two Obama supporters Today. GOOD !!”

Horse Name Sue: “Wow…so young. He must have killed himself.”

Nick Gerz Syracuse, NY: “Another accused pedophile bites the dust. Addios circus freak. What does Michael Jackson and Wal Mart have in common? They both have little boys pants half off.”

Now that last one is really offensive to me, he misspelled ‘Adios’.

  48. I can’t wait for the Clippers to draft Hasheem Thabeet at #1.

  49. Kilgore Trout says:

Smoltz has a higher ERA than Wang right now.

  50. Don says:

    Smoltz getting smoked in Washington.

    4 runs, 4 hits, 1 walk after 1 inning.

  51. Chris says:

Smoltz looking pretty strong tonight… only 4 runs in the first inning.

  52. Quikksand says:

I read MLB.com and it said Nats lead 4-0 over Sox. Tell me that’s true PLEEEEEEEASE!

  53. John says:

Cmon ANdy!!!! You have no excuses today…this is NOT YSIII

    • whozat says:

But it’s the HOMER HAVEN that’s the problem!!! That’s the ONLY reason Andy would EVER nibble.

  54. Dela G says:

man pettite is trying to screw this up! :(

  55. Dave says:

    Cumon Andy.

  56. Hah. The Garden crowd chanting “Lakers Suck”. Priceless.

  57. Quikksand says:

    Pettitte is killing me.

  58. BigBlueAL says:

    Fuckin Pettitte.

  59. Mike Axisa says:

It must be the ballpark, right Andy?

  60. SouthernYankeeFan says:

come on Andy dont lose the lead already

  61. Dela G says:

DAMNIT ANDY, they give you the lead and you start giving up a run?

  62. BigBlueAL says:

Tough going back and forth between this blog and a Knicks blog.

  63. John says:

Let’s see: 4 well hit balls (but only one double), 2 walks and 28 pitches in the first.

    We need to score more.

  64. Memo to the guy in the red shirt at the WaMu theater happily cheering on Blake Griffin:

There’s no such thing as “Clipper Nation”.

  65. Dela G says:

thank god andy got out of this

  66. Dela G says:

    wooooo! derek jeter!

  67. Dave says:

Smoltz is hitting 93 with his fastball. Thats faster than I was hoping.

  68. Jose says:

Nick Johnson injured in the Red Sox-Natinals Game.

  69. Jason Joker says:

    let’s go A-rod

  70. John says:

God, Teixera is so bad with RISP in clutch situations. Package him in a deal with Cano for Giambi and Mariano Duncan.

  71. teix is the man says:

Lowe looks like the love child of jeff daniels and owen wilson

  72. BigBlueAL says:

Arod fuckin killing the ball tonight.

  73. The Artist says:

Another hit, thanks to Joe Girardi’s ejection last night.

  74. Dave says:

Oh man will it be really good to get him going

  75. SouthernYankeeFan says:

    I missed you Alex.

  76. Mike Axisa says:

    Very steep decline!

  77. John says:

    Woo-hoo stat-padder!

  78. Dela G says:

    a rod is on fire

  79. Dela G says:

    a rod is on fire

  80. BigBlueAL says:

3 runs first 2 innings is nice, but 5 lob is still frustrating.

  81. John says:

well we got one RISP hit

  82. Nigel Incubator-Jones says:

    Snark level very high today.

    me likey

    • Jose says:

      Tommy: I l-left a message.
Richard Hayden: A message? What number did you call?
Tommy: Two, four, niner, five, six, seven…
Richard Hayden: I can’t hear you, you’re trailing off and did I catch a niner in there? Were you calling from a walkie-talkie?
      Tommy: No, it was cordless.
Richard Hayden: You know what? Don’t. Not here, not now

  83. John says:

    cmon Andy…no mo walks/hard hit balls/runs

  84. Salty Buggah says:

9 on base in 2 innings is awesome

  85. Nigel Incubator-Jones says:

Jeff Weaver losses an extra inning game.. Bad Memories..

  86. yanke1313 says:

  87. charlespoet says:

ARod’s single from last night seems to have sparked something, I hope.

  88. Sacramento takes Tyreke Evans instead of Ricky Rubio.

    (golf clap)

    Very shrewd. Well done, Cow-Town.

  89. Drew says:

    • Jose says:

He is a gold glover, lefty and has blonde hair, he is perfect for Yankee Stadium. He is greater than “The Commerce Comet”.

  90. Drew says:

Is there anything KS doesn’t know? This guy needs to be our everyday announcer.

    • whozat says:

I think that, unlike many announcers, Kenny READS the notes they prepare for him :-)

And he obviously had the playing experience, not to take that away.

  91. Zach says:

    josh bard’s the man

  92. Sean C says:

A-Rod tied Reggie for 11th all time with that solo shot.

  93. Drew says:

A lot if you wanted Grit the whole time but I gotta say, he’s surprising me as of late.

    • The Artist says:

Hitting over .300 with a .360 OBP. He’s been great after the slow start. I’m still not sure he’s an everyday players, but I have little to back that up with. His OBP for righties (.360) and Lefties (.353) is very close, just last year in AAA. And once he’s on, he scores at a very high rate.

Don’t look at the SLG/OPS, he’s not that type of player. He’s a table setter, OBP and Runs Scored are his job and he does it well.

      • The Artist says:

BTW-Hitting .300+/.360 for May and June

        • Drew says:

Yeah, I’m Melky’s biggest fan but shit, Brett is gettin it done. That said, Melky still has a spot on MY Yankees.

        • whozat says:

So much the better for the Yanks. What’s the sample size against lefties/righties?

With Johnny’s calf/foot thing from the other day, having at least one of Gardner/Melky going well is really important.

  94. The three players I didn’t want are all gone.

    Rubio, Thabeet, and Harden.

    I’m happy.

  95. Tom Zig says:

7 game hitting streak for Ransom woo hoo

  96. whozat says:

Guys, I wish we had pitching depth like the Sox. I mean, if we could only have a pitcher we could call up that would throw 70 pitches in 3 innings, while giving up 5 runs…

  97. Ivan says:

    Rubio is a T-Wolf.

  98. John says:

I think Jeter won’t come through here with 2 in RISP

  99. Drew says:

    I hate the NL…

  100. Drew says:

    Time for some JD. :)

  101. NYY626 says:

John, i think youre wrong :)

  102. John says:

    Johnny D won’t come through…

  103. Ivan says:

    Johnny Flynn: Overdrafted anyone?

  104. Mike Axisa says:

Offense is back. I missed it.

  105. John says:

    Johnny Damon clears the bases!!!!!!

  106. V says:

    Kotchman > Teixeira, right? ;-)

  107. charlespoet says:

And the enigma that is the NY Yankees continues.

  108. Drew says:

Derek Lowe is happy he’s not in the AL East.

  109. whozat says:

Oh, too bad. I wanted another hit!

Tex scalded that ball, though. When you’re out (on a ball in play) before you even manage to get both feet out of the batter’s box, you did pretty much everything you could.

    • John says:

WRONG! Teixera is obviously not clutch. He should have driven in that run off of a struggling pitcher. Anyone notice that Mariano actually hit it into the outfield last night and Teixera has been unable to do so tonight? I wonder if we can trade him to the Indians as well.

  110. Tom Zig says:

I’m really curious as to how Bostonians would pronounce “Teixeira”

  111. Yes! Curry is gone. Now the Knicks can take Jordan Hill!

  112. Nigel Incubator-Jones says:

John, how’s Pettite gonna do this inning?

    • John says:

      no runs

      • Nigel Incubator-Jones says:

Noooooo, “He will do horribly”. We’re riding the hot hand your dealing.

        • John says:

Well I would but I don’t want to waste a good luck charm (for now at least) in a 6-1 game. So, I wanted to say the positive thing that I really think will happen.

          And there, it just did.

  113. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

dammit i wanted stephen curry :(

  114. Ivan says:

Nice pick for Golden State. They have a damn small backcourt though.

  115. LiveFromNewYork says:

Isn’t Chipper Jones like 75 years old?

    • Mattingly's Love Child says:

Don’t poke the bear…let him keep settling for walks and singles to the opposite field!

    • Jose says:

Yes. He was the starting third baseman for the 1958 Milwaukee Braves. He was best friends with Frank Torre on that team, the brother of Joe Torre who ended up managing against the Braves in the 1999 World Series.

  116. charlespoet says:

Is it me or has Andy not looked good for the past 3 starts or so. Think he is injured or perhaps needs to be DL’d until his back is better.

  117. Drew says:

Oh Mo, on the steps in the backdrop it says “A-Rod Cheats.” They love them some Andruw Jones though.

  118. Tampa Yankee says:

A lot of pitches for Andy already

    • Mattingly's Love Child says:

On CNN I saw a text from a viewer that said MJ was a hero and outstanding role model….

We are a country of morons.

      • Wolf Williams says:

In our dead pool, no one had Michael Jackson. Too bad… Almost a thousand bucks left on the table.

      • Zach says:

Some woman who wrote a pro-michael book was on E! crying about how hes misunderstood

    • The Artist says:

“It’s like when Kennedy was assassinated.”

He’s 36. When JFK was assassinated, he was -9 years old.

      • Mattingly's Love Child says:

        lmao, I didn’t even notice that….

      • LiveFromNewYork says:

Yeah, how do you make that connection even if he was alive? Michael Harris is a moron. That’s probably what he was doing in Times Square.

      • The Artist says:

Maybe he meant JFK Jr? Does killing yourself and your wife in a plane crash count as an “assassination”?

BTW-How come only famous people get “assassinated”? The rest of us get “killed” or “murdered” but public figures get “assassinated”. I guess it sounds more important.

  119. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    jordan hill

  120. Jordan Hill! Now, it’s time to trade David Lee.

  121. Jordan Hill.

And the Knicks fans boo. That’s why I don’t go to the NBA draft. Not enough smart people there.

  122. Ivan says:

Jordan Hill. He’s okay. I can live with it.

  123. Drew says:

Ransom playing 2nd tonight is just further proof that Ramiro will be playing every day in Scranton shortly. I feel it’s for the best.

    • Mattingly's Love Child says:

The extra ABs won’t turn him into Pujols, but yeah, the kid could certainly use some more development time as a hitter.

      • Drew says:

True, who knows what he’ll be. He’s never been projected to be a hitter but working everyday is necessary for someone so young. He can work on hitting, bunting, stealing, etc…

  124. LiveFromNewYork says:

The Arod Cheats sign doesn’t pass judgment on that. They might be like Arod Cheats! ALRIGHT!

  125. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Axisa, you got me. Goldblum’s not dead.

  126. Ivan says:

Derozan pick can make u look like a genius, or a complete moron.

  127. Wolf Williams says:

Losing Farrah Fawcett hurts more…. I was eight. Had her poster. She was hot…. even though I had no idea why I had her poster. But everyone did. Then I took it down for a Dr. J and a Dr. Dunkenstein.

  128. Henry says:

Bout time the bats woke up.

  129. e mills says:

well I hope they don’t use up all their runs like the did in the 15-0 drubbing against the mets so we have to sit through I dunno…whatever that awful # of games it was

    • The Artist says:

Nah, we have good pitching match ups for the Mets

      Sabathia vs Pelfrey

      Burnett vs Redding

      Wang vs Hernandez

Anything can happen, but I’ll be disappointed if we don’t sweep them. They’re fielding a AAA lineup and no Santana.

    • Nigel Incubator-Jones says:

      Try enjoying this first…
      Become a crumudgeon tomoorrow.

    • Damien says:

Yeah, the Yankees should just stop trying to score runs in this game. Comebacks never happen. Just go up there and take pitches. I bet A-Rod still tries to pad his stats though.

  130. Drew says:

    Ransom Jack

  131. Ivan says:

I know it’s a pipe dream but if they could draft Jennings at 29, that would be HUGE!!!!!!!

  132. Zach says:

    welcome back cody

  133. Cody Ransom is not teh suck.

  134. Andy Pettitte = lank.

  135. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Joba just said “You still call a shitty game”.*

*I can’t read lips very well.

  136. NBA guys, who did Thabeet go to?
