i never thought i’d say it: i feel sorry for the mets

  2. Jamal G. says:

Four cheap hits by the M’s – the two by Gutierrez; the one under the glove of Joba by ichiro; and the last hit just now by Kenji Johjima.

    • Tank the Frank says:

I agree I was just going to mention that.

    • Zach says:

7 of 9 hits were singles

but Francesa will turn it into Joba giving up rockets all night

    • Accent Shallow says:

The bloops and dinks are going to happen to a pitcher with Joba’s stuff, but he’s gotta play D and get to the ball. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a pitcher whiff like that before — what a freak play.

  3. Dela G says:

arg LETS GET GET IT YANKS!

  4. They should bunt with Ichiro here. That’s what I would do.

  5. DreDog says:

Does everyone have a tall glass of calm down juice ready for this thread?

  6. AP28 says:

They treat Joba like the little b!tch. He’s such a pu$$y. They never let him fight through a tough spot. At the earliest sign of trouble they pull him out of the game.

No up and coming stud pitcher is handled like this. Please put his ass back in the bullpen and give Hughes his spot. Nibbling little b!tch.

    • Yankee1010 says:

Watch out Socrates, Aristotle, Kant, etc., you have a new contender.

    • Drew says:

      OAKTAG

    • When Joba stays healthy for the rest of the year and next year, you’ll be thankful they treated him like “a pussy.” What good is leaving him out there if he’s not at his most effective? Making a guy tough it out is not as important as winning the damn game.

      • AP28 says:

“Not at his most effective”. He’s been like more times than not this whole god damn season. He was only at 94 pitches through 5 and a third against the freaking Mariners. You gotta be kidding me.

We have the wrong guy in the rotation right now. Hughes should be starting and Joba should be the one being treated as a reliever. Phil must watch Joba pitch and wonder why the hell he has to be relegated to the bullpen while Joba needs a 100 pitches to get through 5 innings.

        • Steve H says:

Smile, we’re on Candid Camera!! There’s no way he’s not pulling our leg.

        • Joba has a 3.32 ERA as a starter, to go along with 143 strikeouts in 141 innings, not including tonight. How’s that bad? He’s a better starter than Phil Hughes. They should both be starting, but Chamberlain is better than Hughes.

Do you seriously expect him to be a polished, ace-like starter already? He’s 23 years old. 23. He’s 23. I’m going to repeat that. He’s 23. Joba is not going to be a perfect pitcher in his first full season as a starter.

          • AP28 says:

No one is asking for perfect.

            15 starts
            >6 innings: 3 (one of them was a 6 1/3)
            =6 innings: 5
            <6 innings: 7

So on almost half his starts, he lasts less than 6 innings. That is ridiculous.

            • No, it’s not ridiculous. It’s a young dude trying to learn how to pitch instead of just huck the ball up there every time. I get frustrated when Joba doesn’t challenge dudes he should be challenging and ends up with a high pitch count, but it’s not like he isn’t going to improve from what he is now.

And one of those <6 IP was the game he got hit by a liner, so counting that against him is a tad unfair; he didn’t really have control over that one.

            • Zach says:

              5 of Phil’s 7 starts were <6

              so thats ridiculous

        • Zach says:

“Phil must watch Joba pitch and wonder why the hell he has to be relegated to the bullpen while Joba needs a 100 pitches to get through 5 innings.”

how many times have Phil been past 5 innings this year?

        • Yankee1010 says:

OK, Ashton, you can come out now.

    • Accent Shallow says:

All young pitchers these days are handled with kid gloves. They’d treat Hughes the same way.

    • Dela G says:

hey moron did you not see how the braves handled tommy hanson?

      • Reggie C. says:

        careful there … that’s a pro-LoHud’er you’re engaging.

Dude’s carrying gems like that by the dozen.

      • Moose says:

I love how Dela gets so upset when someone dare questions Joba’s greatness.

Bro, put down the Kool Aid and take Joba’s balls out of your mouth. Its ok to not be a “Joba must start” cult member.

There is obviously a good healthy debate to be had re: Joba and his position on the team. Arguments can be made both ways. The only problem, is that your arguments for why Joba should be a starter (“Bro, he’s awesome, he has like a 3.4 ERA and 140K’s…he’s SICK and can’t be touched!!!!) are completely moronic and impossible to give credence too.

While stat geeks, like yourself, rely soley on Elias and other stat books for their arguments – people like myself, and others, like to rely on our EYES. Anyone who thinks that Joba is a legit 3.4 ERA type starter is fucking moron. The Yankees never leave him in the game long enough to give up more than 4 runs a start (they usually take him out after he walks in a second run with the bases loaded).

Put down the kool aid bro, and open your eyes. You, like 90% of the other Joba cult members on this site, can’t admit that what the Yankees are doing with Joba and Hughes is the exact opposite of what should be done with them.

        • AP28 says:

          Amen brother. Amen.

        • Steve H says:

His era is 3.4 something. It is. That’s a fact. If it isn’t please tell me what your eyes think it is. Saying that an ERA isn’t what an ERA is might be the dumbest thing I have ever read. Think about that, you are literally disputing a fact that cannot be disputed.

        • handtius says:

wait, this isn’t sarcasm? Man, I thought that was a joke till I scrolled up. Moose, search Joba on this site and you’ll get all the FACTS as to why he’s a starter. No one here wants to talk about it anymore.

        • (”Bro, he’s awesome, he has like a 3.4 ERA and 140K’s…he’s SICK and can’t be touched!!!!) are completely moronic and impossible to give credence too.

Except those arguments are, well, real. They’re not “oh he has a ‘closer’s mentality’ or some ethereal bullshit like that. How are fact based arguments moronic and impossible to give credence to?

like to rely on our EYES. Anyone who thinks that Joba is a legit 3.4 ERA type starter is fucking moron.

Why….? Because he’s put up a 3.34 ERA over 140 innings, which is almost a full season of pitching? Wouldn’t that tell you that, yes, he is a 3.3ish ERA pitcher?

And, yes, I know that his numbers would be much better out of the bullpen but so would just about every pitcher’s. The point is that the 3.34 ERA over 150-200 innings a season is more valuable than a 2.50 ERA over 60-80 innings in a season.

          • Moose says:

Dude, do you really think that?

Do you honestly think that having a 3.4 ERA in 30 games in which he starts is more valuable than havin a 2.0 ERA in 60+ games as a reliever? I don’t understand that argument, and everyone here makes it ALL THE TIME. He’ll effect the outcome of nearly twice as many games as a reliever than a starter. And how quick we all forget why they won all those world series in the 90s – I’ll give you a hint…it starts with the letter B.

p.s. And its not like if they move him to the pen, their starting pitching sucks now – Hughes could easily put up numbers equal to what Joba is doing (and probably a lot more efectively).

            • Accent Shallow says:

Really? They won all those World Series because of stellar set up men? Funny, I thought it was the great starting rotation, Jeter/Bernie/O’Neill/Posada and a great supporting cast on offense, and Mariano. Sure, the non-Mo bullpen helped, but it’s not like they were indispensable.

As for “affecting more games as a reliever” he won’t necessarily be affecting games at the point the Yankees need him to win — how often do you see a reliever put in solely because he needs the work, not because of the situation.

It comes down to the oldest adage in the damn book — that the most important thing you can have is good starting pitching.

              • Moose says:

False – yes, the Yankee “core” played a huge role in the 90s championships, but the real reason they were so dominant was because they were able to consistently shorten the games to 6 innings. The Yankees were like 90-3 in games they led after 6 in 1996. THATs how you build a chmapion – not spotty/inconsistent starting pitching.

            • Do you honestly think that having a 3.4 ERA in 30 games in which he starts is more valuable than havin a 2.0 ERA in 60+ games as a reliever?

Yes, I do. Good starters are more valuable than good relievers. Why do you think CC, A.J., Johan, etc. got big time, long term deals when K-Rod got a three year deal, for less AAV? Starters are more valuable than relievers.

He’ll effect the outcome of nearly twice as many games as a reliever than a

What’s bigger: a hundred pennies or one five dollar bill? Pitching in more games does not mean he’s having a bigger affect. By pitching in more innings, he’s affecting much more than if he were pitching in a lot of games.

And how quick we all forget why they won all those world series in the 90s – I’ll give you a hint…it starts with the letter B.

During the “Dynasty Years”, ’96-’01 we’ll say, the only years the ‘pen was markedly better than the rotation was ’96 and ’01. Another reason the Yankees won all those titles is because they fucking raked and had 3 incredible hitters at up the middle positions that were much, much better than the competition’s up the middle players. Why does everyone sell Bernie, Jeet, and Jorge short?

    • Steve H says:

      ummmm, sarcasm?

If not, you couldn’t be more wrong.

    • handtius says:

      /ironhorse?

    • Ivan says:

Mark Prior and Kerry Wood, would of been loved to be treated like pussies.

      • DreDog says:

This guy wants to hire Dusty Baker. 130 pitch limits and no clogging the bases.

        • AP28 says:

Not true retard. Just don’t want to see him get pulled from the game at the first sign of trouble everytime. If he’s going to be the next great pitcher in the history of the game, let him fight through a rough spot against this pathetic fcuking offense known as the Mariners.

          • Steve H says:

Name calling!! Certainly the first signed of getting pwned in an argument.

Try again. Come back with some facts next time, please.

Four cheap hits by the M’s – the two by Gutierrez; the one under the glove of Joba by ichiro; and the last hit just now by Johjima.

    Me = annoyed.

  8. Jake H says:

Would you rather see Matsui up with runners on or Gardner?

  9. Phil Coke is unimpressed by Ichiro and Branyan.

  10. Dela G says:

PHIL COKE IS EFFING GEICO MONEY!

  11. Sweeny Murti, via Twitter put it best:

Watching Joba and Morrow pitch tonight [was] like Chinese water torture.

And then someone replied: You could be watching the Mets.

  12. Drew says:

Now I know we’re going to score in the bottom of the sixth. While I’ll be thrilled, I just get so frustrated that Jobber won’t get the W while Coke will.

    • DreDog says:

Can you believe that Coke was rumored to be one of the prospects to go to Pittsburgh in the Nady/Marte deal? The Pirates decided on another prospect. Thank goodness.

  13. Coke’s awful. We need bullpen help!!1!11!

  14. Jamal G. says:

By retiring Ichiro and Branyan consecutively, Phil Coke now has a sub-1.00 WHIP.

  15. charlespoet says:

    PeteAbe@ Lohud

“Meanwhile, Joba works his usual 5.1 innings. He has made 15 starts and failed to get beyond the sixth inning 12 times. One was because of injury. But, as always, he has the team in the game. The Yankees are 9-5 when he starts.”

    Growing pains, development, or both?

  16. Al D says:

My boy Coke getting it done. Wish I was named after a controlled substance

  17. dkidd says:

coke studied at the feet of master win-poacher aceves

  18. Zach says:

    bad melky

  19. Mike Axisa says:

Ladies and gentlemen, the next Bernie Williams.

  20. Tank the Frank says:

Wow that was an ass-backwards AB by Melky. Two pitches taken in the zone and then swing at a fastball by your face. Awesome.

  21. Wow, we looked dead there.

  22. Dela G says:

    jakubauskas looked like a beast

  23. Reggie C. says:

    Yanks pwned that inning.

  24. Charlie says:

This might have been said a million times and I never noticed, but does anyone realize how weird the term “B-Jobber” sounds?

  25. dkidd says:

lol at coffey sprinting in to face the mets

  26. Chris V. says:

Lopez running hard out of the box!

  27. Jamal G. says:

You know how everyone in the mainstream media is always ballwashing the Red Sox’ bullpen? Well, did you know that the Yankees’ pen is better than Boston’s in the following: K/9; BB/9; K/BB (well, obviously, but still); OBP. Yeah, and they are virtually tied in WHIP (1.28).

    • Chris V. says:

Yeh I saw that the other day. The Yankees bullpen is way underrated. All of their peripheral stats are very good. ERA just avg though so MSM makes fun of them.

    • Little Bill says:

That’s irrelevant and you’re confusing me with all of those numbers and letters. I, and Peter Gammons would agree, think Boston’s bullpen is far superior because they are champions and show a lot of heart and toughness.

    • IMPOSSIBLE. MY EYES, JAMAL, MY EYES, THEY TELL ME AND LET ME SEE THAT BOSTON’S BULLPEN IS HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE NEW YORK’S! Come on, Jamal, avert your eyes from the spreadsheet.

    • Accent Shallow says:

The issue is SLG against. The Sox pen has yielded 19 HRs, the Yankees — 43. Sox pen has a .358 SLG against, the Yankees is .430. They’ve both yielded 40 doubles. No matter how you spin it, that’s bad.

  28. dkidd says:

hughes versus junior makes me feel old

  29. Accent Shallow says:

Man, was that ever a nice K.

  30. Charlie says:

I don’t care how nasty he is we got to get hughes starting soon. He needs his innings this year

  31. Mac says:

Woohoo. 96 mph on the corners…

  32. Manimal says:

Hughes in a High Leverage situation… Nice.

  33. BigBlueAL says:

Hughes has better stuff than Joba now. I said it!!!!

  34. Ivan says:

Was that Phil Hughes or Whay?

  35. Dela G says:

    hughes is fuckin dominant

  36. Dela G says:

    what does ietc mean

i can’t for the life of me figure it out

  37. Zach says:

Well Santana had another bad start tonight

  38. charlespoet says:

I really like this Hughes kid, where did he come from?

  39. Reggie C. says:

I don’t think i’d object too much if the org decided to leave Hughes in the ‘pen and cranked up his work load to get his arm ready for full time ‘pen duty the rest of the year.

  40. Dela G says:

    JOHNNY DAMON! WOOO!

  41. pat says:

Holy shit just got here Montero homered twice? I’m very aroused.

  42. Evan says:

    “Shmoltz”?

  43. Teix is the Man says:

please leave Hughes in the game

  44. BigBlueAL says:

Why is Bruney warming up???? Leave Hughes in there please.

    • Little Bill says:

Especially in a tie game. You don’t use 7 relievers in 2 innings if you’re in a tie game when Hughes can easily go multiple innings.

      • BigBlueAL says:

I dont care if the Yankees take the lead, leave Hughes in there!!!!

      • Reggie C. says:

this game feels like it could go extra-innings. Mariners dont have a good lineup, so to take Hughes out now is rolling the dice , as we burn our good relievers ..

        • Reggie C. says:

the ball was in the stands 2 seconds later.

Okay. Bruney coming in makes more sense b/c he needs the work. But Hughes also needs the work.

          Hughes > Bruney.

    • AP28 says:

As soon as Bruney gets hurt again, Hughes will be the setup guy. The dude throws strikes and challenges guys. Something his starting teammate doesn’t do because he likes to turn 0-2 counts into 3-2 counts.

  45. Tank the Frank says:

Why did the Yankees even put foul territory in this ballpark!!!

  46. Reggie C. says:

Arod won’t see a good pitch.

  47. Dela G says:

wow i am shocked tex swung at that

even i knew the breaking ball was coming

  48. Tank the Frank says:

This sure would be a heck of a time for the first hit with RISP wouldn’t it?

  49. Hughes is awful. We need bullpen help!!!1!111!eleven!

  50. Dela G says:

damn it a-rod, he is giving you fastballs

  51. Zach says:

    wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  52. I fucking LOVE Alex Rodriguez.

  53. Mike Axisa says:

    Why pitch to him? Fools.

  54. Accent Shallow says:

Really? You think you can sneak a high fastball past A-Rod? Who are you again?

  55. Mr.Jigginz says:

    A-BOMB ALERT!!!!!!

  56. BigBlueAL says:

HOLY SHIT he fuckin crushed that one!!!!

  57. Tank the Frank says:

    Now that was just mean-spirited.

  58. Andy Stankiewicz says:

Freaking unclutch bastard. Umm….ARod did what?

  59. Jake H says:

Finally a nice hit with risp

  60. Dela G says:

    HE CRUSHED THAT SHIT!

AN AAAAA BOMB, FROM AAAAA ROD!

  61. VO says:

    HELL YEA!

  62. Yankee1010 says:

Really? You pitched to A-Rod with a base open and Cano on deck? I salute your stupidity.

  63. Jake says:

    That should be illegal

  64. Evan says:

Oooo, I felt that here in Harlem.

  65. Ivan says:

As soon as the bat hit the ball, it had one them sounds that u said to ur self, awwwww damn!!!.

  66. Little Bill says:

    THERE IT GOES!!!!! CLUTCH A-ROD!!!

  67. dkidd says:

    dear american league:

you can no longer pitch inside to alex rodriguez

  68. pat says:

He got around on that QUICK.

  69. AJ says:

This damn bandbox of a stadium! That wouldn’t have been a home run anywhere else! Coors Field East! Coors Field East!

Clearly sarcasm, but what a shot from A-Rod. It’s an A-Bomb, for A-Rod, and the Yankees take a 5-3 lead.

  70. Mike Axisa says:

Now leave Hughes in there. Go against the cookbook, avoid the cookbook!!!

    • AJ says:

I completely agree. Leave him in for the eighth – the kid is absolutely dealing.

    • Evan says:

I agree with this post. Relief ace power!

    • AJ says:

Hey look Joe sent Phil out for a second inning…

Oh, wait. Instead of sending out a guy who dominated and threw 9 pitches, he sent out another pitcher.

      Bullpen management fail.

  71. Zach says:

way to pile on runs Alex, you only needed 1 RBI to get the lead

  72. The Fallen Phoenix says:

    Clutch.

  73. Salty Buggah says:

    FUCK YEA ALEX!!!!! 2-RUN BOMB!

    UNCLUTH THAT!

Alex: HOW MY ASS TASTE NOW?

  74. I’m still laughing at how far Alex hit that ball. Wow. What a fucking shot.

  75. Cokie says:

    Yeah boyeeee

  76. Conversation between me and Joe:

Joe:strategy here: walk a-rod. throw pitches at cano’s eyes

ME: No question, especially with men on 1 and 2 the m’s would be basically guarnateed a GIDP

Joe: see that’s what you get for pitching to a-rod

Me: And that is why you walk A-Rod

    • Little Bill says:

Yeah, once they got Tex out they could have pitched around A-Rod. Posada and Cano < A-Rod.

  77. Longo says:

i know others care, but i love seeing tex boisterously cheering when others do well even if hes not quite on right now

    • Salty Buggah says:

Yea, me too. He’s a good teammate.

      • Zach says:

sorry but i think we’re focusing too much on it.
is there someone in the dugout who just sits on the bench and doesnt give high five to a teammate who just hit a clutch HR?

  78. Marc says:

HE CRUSHED THAT!!!#@@!#@! Clutchy McClutcherson! Gritty McGritter! Alex Rodriguez!

  79. Mike Axisa says:

A-Rod talking to Pena, “you see that kid? you’ll never be able to do that.”

  80. Nice play, Franklin.

  81. Andy Stankiewicz says:

    Some bandbox.

  82. Drew says:

Well that was pretty sweet. Talk about a no doubter.

  83. Ksturnz says:

Tex got fired up! luv him

  84. BigBlueAL says:

Definitely had to take Hughes out, he threw way too many pitches last inning.

  85. whozat says:

Why give Hughes just 9 pitches? Let him throw two innings. It’s not like he’s getting too much work.

  86. Eirias says:

    DO NOT DOUBT THE COOKBOOK.

  87. Mike Axisa says:

Errrrrrrr, why no Hughes? Why why why why? No good reason. Absolutely none.

    • whozat says:

But…it says right here that Bruney pitches the eighth!!!

    • AJ says:

Because people like Bruney are the eighth inning guys, and therefore they must always work the eighth inning. It doesn’t matter that Phil Hughes is throwing 96 mph heaters and making hitters look silly. He’s not an eighth inning guy yet.

Now there’s two men on and no one out. Hey Joe, you kicking yourself in the ass yet? You should be.

  88. pat says:

I’m still really impressed with that homerun, that pitch was mad high and inside and he “put a hurtin on that bitch”

  89. BigBlueAL says:

I almost want Bruney to blow the lead.

  90. Dela G says:

    ugh

  91. Evan says:

Why won’t you find gloves, dunkers?

  92. Peter Lacock says:

Much better AB’s for Cano tonight. 23 pitches, took a called strike in 3 of 4 AB’s and still has 2 hits. Will wonders never cease.

  93. Hey, so, um, pitch Phil Hughes more?

  94. Little Bill says:

Why not leave Hughes in and if he gets in trouble, bring in Bruney? Now if Bruney gets in trouble you either have to leave him in or bring in Mo again for 1+ inning.

  95. Tony says:

    Hughesus threw NINE pitches tonight.

  96. Yankee1010 says:

I guess Hughes was pitching too well? Is that why he was taken out?

  97. Jake H says:

Hughes throws 9 pitches so lets take him out. Brilliant!

  98. Accent Shallow says:

If Hughes is going to be a 1 inning reliever, please send him to Scranton.

  99. V says:

Man, the Mariners have some awesome outfielders.

  100. Mac says:

Bruney has been ineffective of late, no?

  101. Ivan says:

Managers always wanna make the game harder than it is. It’s quite simple, leave Hughes in the Game.

  102. V says:

    Man, Bruney sucks right now.

    Brilliant job pulling Hughes there.

  103. dkidd says:

what happened to hughes? he was dominating and now he can’t get anyone out

  104. BigBlueAL says:

    FUCK YOU Girardi.

  105. Eirias says:

    Quick, let’s put Hughes in!

  106. pat says:

Fucking shitbags Bruney. Put a goddamn patch on your hat.

  107. AJ says:

If Bruney blows this lead, I hope Mo implants a cleat in Girardi’s ass.

  108. Reggie C. says:

    Bruney isn’t Hughes.

  109. Dela G says:

DAMNIT WHY THE HELL DID YOU TAKE OUT HUGHES!!!

    SHIT!

    [INSERT MORE EXPLETIVES!]

  110. Teix is the Man says:

Girardi will have to have a hell of an answer as to why he took Hughes out.

  111. I don’t like that Hughes is in the bullpen…but if you’re going to have him there, why not use him for more than 9 pitches?

  112. Andy Stankiewicz says:

This is unreal. That is why I hate playing by the book. There is no reason to take out Hughes, none!! Girardi should take that stupid book and shove it up his ass.

  113. AJ says:

Is Mo ready yet? I don’t want to see Bruney against Branyan. Something tells me that’s trouble waiting to happen.

  114. Ksturnz says:

IK it’s hindsight, but I wanted Hughes to stay in there. Who else is a genius?

    • BigBlueAL says:

If you look back, I mentioned this when I saw Bruney warming up before Arod even hit his HR. This is absolute ridiculous that Hughes only pitched 1 inning in which he threw 9 pitches.

  115. DreDog says:

    Oh crap.

  116. Teix is the Man says:

Francesa is irrationallly talking to his diet coke right now

  117. Tom in GA says:

help me understand why a reliever isn’t allowed to pitch more than one inning unless named aceves or coke.

  118. Tank the Frank says:

    Get tough Bruney.

  119. Drew says:

I guess Joe wanted Hughes available for tomorrow.

  120. Reggie C. says:

Bruney has the better power stuff , but Hughes is clearly polished and the power is probably on par with Bruney at this point.

if we’re gonna yank hughes to AAA , then lets do it already! And then lets blow up the Rox GM’s phone and land Street.

  121. dkidd says:

in girardi’s defense, hughes needs to get his innings up

    wait a second…

  122. matt b says:

I’m rarely a person of extremes, but the job by Joe G. right here is flat out indefensible and unexcusable.

  123. So do we think Bruney is in there because Joe is sticking to the idiotically defined bullpen roles or because Bruney needs the work?

  124. BklynJT says:

I wish I could curse out Girardi to his f-ing face!

  125. Yankee1010 says:

Well, I can only hope that Girardi will learn from this shitshow managing. Leave the dominant guy in who only needed 9 pitches in his first inning. My God, Joe.

    • BklynJT says:

He’s had plenty of chances to learn. Hughes is a starting pitcher who just threw 9 pitches. WHY THE F_LKAJSDLAKJD DO YOU TAKE HIM OUT.

  126. Teix is the Man says:

    C’mon, get big Bruney

  127. Ivan says:

If im Phil Hughes, im ticked. I get replace in the rotation by a pitcher who I pitch better than, and now in the BP, I get replace by a pitcher who I pitch better than.

  128. BklynJT says:

    FIRE GIRARDI NOW

  129. dkidd says:

red sox bullpen sucking as well

  130. Dela G says:

    DAMNIT IT … ARG!!!

    UGH!

  131. V says:

    Way to fucking go Girardi.

I’ve been one of his largest ‘ok, he’s learning’ defenders, but now, I would be OK if he were gone tomorrow.

    Stupid, stupid managing.

  132. Yankee1010 says:

Well, Joe, are you happy now? That’s on you. And of course, Bruney, but that was completely unnecessary. What a retarded move that was indefensible from the beginning.

    • matt b says:

Look, it’s on Bruney. But this is a blatant example of a manager adding real negative value to a club, and that’s quite a feat. And believe me, I’m a numbers guy, and I’m well aware that Bruney’s been perfect in hold situations. But to take out Phil who has been basically untouchable for weeks, atfer 9 pitches, for a guy who has labored mightily in two of his three high leverage spots since coming off the DL is mind-boggling. It’s just, to quote my favorite poster on here, batshit isane.

      • Yankee1010 says:

I’m not absolving Bruney, but it would have never been in his hands if Girardi just displayed common sense.

      • Steve H says:

Good post. While we are all killing Joe (rightfully), Bruney still had a job to do and didn’t do it.

  133. BigBlueAL says:

Torre wouldve let Hughes in the game!!!! LOL

  134. Andy Stankiewicz says:

Nice job by Bruney and Joey G.

  135. E-ROC says:

Tie game when it shouldn’t be. Well, at least Branyan didn’t give the Mariners the lead.

  136. Well that was just grand.

  137. cjc says:

    motherfucker unbelievable

  138. pat says:

Yeah I’m usually 100% behind girardi but this move was pretty indefensible.

  139. Capital T says:

Remember when Mo would pitch the 7 & 8th and hand it over to Wetland. Girardi caught some of those games and yet doesn’t let Phil go 2 innings?

  140. Little Bill says:

I hope this means Bruney is out of the 8th inning role and Hughes is in.

  141. Ksturnz says:

    doesn’t matter. we’ll win this

  142. Marc says:

I hope they score right here. I really wanna see #501 tonight!

  143. Teix is the Man says:

Things are starting to look up in Baltimore!

  144. cjc says:

9 fucking pitches and he takes him out just dumb and thats a first guess

  145. The Fallen Phoenix says:

Unfortunately, I think most managers in baseball take out Hughes and plug in Bruney in the 8th.

It’s still the wrong move, though.

    • BklynJT says:

More than half the people here would normally be upset with that bunt. … (interrupted thought)

      FUCK YEAH MELKY MAN!!!!!

  146. The Iron Horse says:

With 2 runs in, Bruney’s ERA goes from 2.55 to 4.05. You guys love talking about small sample sizes – I never understood why you were so high on Bruney. He’s very hittable.

  147. MattG says:

New rule: the only person to relieve Hughes when he’s dealing is Rivera.

  148. Drew says:

Not for nothing, but if Bruney gets his job done there it’s all gravy and he’s still our 8th inning guy.

    • Yankee1010 says:

Yes and no. Hughes needs innings. He just dominated the 7th with 9 pitches. Bruney has been shaky his last 2 outings and needed Mo to bail him out both times, so it’s not like he’s on fire now. Leaving Hughes in is the only thing that made sense there.

      • Drew says:

I’m sure Joe has his reasons, and we know he will be asked in the post game.

        • Yankee1010 says:

I have a feeling his “reason” will be one that we’re not going to like, i.e. well, Bruney is our 8th inning guy. Well, yes Joe, but Hughes dominated and Bruney has been struggling.

  149. Cokie says:

WTF? I go away for 5 minutes to do my evening glory thinking this one is a wrap and some guy that looks like teh Bbbruney coughs it up?

  150. BklynJT says:

Girardi is a complete idiot. He will never live this day down, until of course i forget. But then he will do it again, and that time for sure, I will not forget…

  151. BigBlueAL says:

    Yeah Kay rip Girardi!!!!

  152. Steve H says:

Orioles are getting to the vaunted Sox pen tonight. This would be great if the can come all the way back.

  153. pat says:

Hideki is gonna do something clutchy…

  154. Little Bill says:

Mariano will pitch the 9th so we have 2 good shots here to get a run. If it goes extras, we’ve got Aceves.

  155. Accent Shallow says:

Anyone still want Shelley Duncan up here? Crazy.

  156. dkidd says:

    matsui making his father proud!

  157. The Fallen Phoenix says:

Clearly A-Rod’s HR is not clutch because it hasn’t held up.

And damn, Matsui is really washed up, isn’t he?

  158. Andy Stankiewicz says:

    Oh that was sweet Godzilla.

  159. Ivan says:

It’s one of those “Make a move, just to make a move”

  160. Teix is the Man says:

The Matsuis’ are going fucking nuts lol

  161. Tom in GA says:

Girardi is too anal to succeed for any length of time. this is ridiculous, and he needs to stop over-managing. what an a**

  162. ARX says:

    o..k…

  163. BigBlueAL says:

Small ball!!!! Girardi redeems himself!!!! LOL

  164. Dela G says:

SWISHA WITH THE CLUTCH ASS BUNT!

  165. Drew says:

I love how our announcers neglect to tell us there was a pinch runner. Or did they and I missed it?

    • Yankee1010 says:

Nope. They only said it after the bunt. They definitely didn’t say anything about it until after the bunt, which didn’t help.

  166. Andy Stankiewicz says:

That will look like a screaming line drive in the box score.

  167. Eric S says:

You think Gardner will steal home? :)

  168. Wolf Williams says:

Welcome to the idiotic Bill James/Moneyball Era, where stats and game-decision recipes based on stats and pitch counts and innings counts and computer analysis are more important than actually having a feel for how a game should be managed.

Why didn’t we hire Jim Leyland when we had a chance…..?

When Girardi got ejected last week, notice how before he walked into the clubhouse he grabbed a notebook about four inches thick? Gotta have those computer printouts handy before you can manage a game, boy…. Can’t live without the cookbook.

    • The Fallen Phoenix says:

God forbid one use reasoned analysis to make decisions. Hey, I think it’s going to snow tomorrow. No, I’m not using any meteorological data, just using my feel for the weather.

    • V says:

      Dumb post.

There was nothing stats based about replacing Hughes with Bruney.

    • This game has nothing to do with Bill James/Moneyball at all. If anything, Girardi’s sticking with traditionalism and labeling of certain roles for bullpen guys cost the Yankees the lead in the 8th. Bruney is “the” 8th inning guy so he must be in.

Yeah, man, scouting reports SUCK. Just go up there and pitch and hit with your gut. Totally awesome plan. Knowing shit about your opponents is SOOOOOOOOOOO lame.

    • Also, Girardi taking Hughes out actually went against the whole pitch count/innings limit thing because Hughes clearly needs the innings.

  169. Drew says:

    Melky teh bum!!!1

  170. ARX says:

    Melky!!

  171. cjc says:

    melky just saved joe’s ass

  172. cjc says:

    melky just saved joe’s ass

  173. Accent Shallow says:

Can Melky make up his mind if he sucks or not?

  174. Ksturnz says:

melky is clutch. Bru gets the win. 501. let’s go home

  175. Teix is the Man says:

    man they’re so gritty lol

  176. Dela G says:

    THE MELKMAN DELIVERS!

    WHOOOO!!!

  177. V says:

    Wow. Nice inning, for once!

  178. Eirias says:

I’ve got to admit, Melky is pretty damn clutch.

  179. Little Bill says:

Thank God! Melky is so clutch!

  180. Manimal says:

I love the Melkman because he always delivers

  181. BigBlueAL says:

    Melky rules.

  182. Mike Axisa says:

Now Girardi won’t learn a thing about bullpen management because it didn’t bite him in the ass, or at least doesn’t look like it will.

  183. handtius says:

    Melk.

  184. Lanny says:

Don’t they want to build up Hughes’ innings? Why not let him go 2? He threw 9 pitches!

    Typical Girardi over managing.

  185. Evan says:

Yeah bottom of the order thunder!

  186. Eric S says:

Very unlikely that Jeter grounds into a DP here…

  187. ARX says:

How about a 2 run double Derek?

  188. BklynJT says:

Bruney is an ass, he just wanted the win for himself.

  189. matt b says:

Joe G ought to be buying ‘Deki, Swisher and Melky freaking rolexes tomorrow.

  190. BigBlueAL says:

I hope the official scorer still gives Hughes the Win and not Bruney.

  191. BklynJT says:

    Yeah, dats mah boi.

  192. Lanny says:

And we thought Bruney did a bad job. Wow.

  193. Marc says:

Is 4 runs too many for a save situation?

  194. Yankee1010 says:

If you ever want to see how meaningless a “win” is for a pitcher, check out the “win” Bruney is going to get tonight.

  195. The Iron Horse says:

    lead off doubles rock

  196. Teix is the Man says:

    Orioles pull within 2!

  197. Tank the Frank says:

Don’t look now… but Boston’s “elite” bullpen is coming unglued.

  198. Wolf Williams says:

Idiotic baseball rules are going to let Bruney get a win here… in-fucking-credible. Can’t baseball amend that stat and make it a ‘Team Win” when a (relief) pitcher of record pitches like shit and actually surrenders a lead, but the offense bails him out?

  199. BigBlueAL says:

My God Jimmy Rollins comes back tonight and goes 0 for 5. Im so tempted to cut him from my fantasy team since I have Tulowitski also (before you ask its only an 8 team league).

  200. pat says:

Damn, jeter kick save and a beaut.

  201. Andy Stankiewicz says:

Jeter is so smoove. I love the Capitan.

  202. Dela G says:

    JETE IS MONEY!

  203. dkidd says:

    10-9 sox!!

  204. zs190 says:

Hilarious, the much hyped Sox bullpen just gave up 8 runs in the last 2 innings to the O’s and it’s 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 8th.

  205. Ksturnz says:

    tex didn’t pull it lefty

  206. Andy Stankiewicz says:

    Go O’s !!!!
    You can do it !!!!

  207. Klemy says:

Did Paul really just say, “He hit the ball hard. Sometimes it seems like there are 8 or 9 people out there trying to catch it.”? lol

  208. Dela G says:

WOW A-ROD IS BACK, HE IS HITTING EVERYTHING WICKED FAH

  209. dkidd says:

entire red sox team left the field with two outs

  210. Salty Buggah says:

I am so excited A-rod has been awakened, we need him. Even though he got out there, he did hit it pretty well.
