Game 100: Rock the Kazmir

By

During an unusually hectic morning, I was able to take a second to sit back and laugh at the report that the Rays had shopped youngster Scott Kazmir (can you believe he turned just 25 this year?) to a few teams, including none other than the Mets. I had this picture in my head of Andrew Friedman and his frat buddies standing over the speakerphone with Omar Minaya on the other end, trying to contain their laughter as they crank called him. It just seemed like something too hilarious to be true.

Unfortunately for him, Kazmir’s had himself a season that Nick Swisher would describe as “rocky road.” He’s got a 58-40 K/BB ratio in 74 IP, and both his ERA and WHIP are ghastly at 6.69 and 1.72, respectively. He has, however, surrendered two runs or less in three of his five starts since coming off the DL, so there’s signs that the ship is starting to right. With the way the Yankees are rolling right now, I hope they knock Kazmir back off track tonight. Nothing personal.

The key members of the bullpen are rested, so all they need is five out of CC. Here’s tonight’s lineup:

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Matsui, DH
Posada, C
Cano, 2B
Swisher, RF
Melky, CF

And on the mound, Carsten Sabathia.

Ace won’t be available though according to PeteAbe

  2. The Lodge says:

    Great Open Thread Title.

  3. Salty Buggah says:

I hope our offense can get to Kazmir today to clinch the series. We need CC to continue his stretch of good games. Would be nice if he can shut them down because I want out run differential to increase a lot more while decreasing the Rays’ at the same time.

  4. Doug says:

“so all they need is five out of CC.”

    but we’ll gladly take 7+

  5. Asked this on LoHud and got mostly the same responses:

Which WS matchups would you find sexiest (and yes, if you weren’t a Yankee fan?)?

    Cubs vs anyone
    Yankees vs Dodgers
    Yankees vs Phillies
    Red Sox vs Phillies
    Red Sox vs Dodgers
    Other

Also, Montero today 2-4 w/ 2B and RBI (and K)

  6. GG says:

A-Rod has been awful off of Kaz in his career, but I think were talking about a different pitcher this year, he aint the same, so lets hope things are a lil different tonight

  7. Mikebk says:

while we are talking about the rumormill we are apparently determinate in what the rays are going to do in how they fare the next two days.

“Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports hear that the Rays may be shying away from a blockbuster deal. They’re 5.0 games behind Boston in the Wild Card race, so their next two games against the Yankees could determine the team’s direction.

f the Rays are discouraged after the Yankees series, they could make Dan Wheeler, Chad Bradford, Grant Balfour, Joe Nelson and Lance Cormier available, according to the FOX Sports source.”

    • CP3 says:

Not sure if the Rays would consider dealing with in the division, they probably won’t, but having grant balfour would be nice.

  8. Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson not in tonight’s lineup for Pittsburgh.

  9. Salty Buggah says:

“Yankees have struggled immensely against Kazmir, hitting .218 off him as a team. Six regulars hit below .200 against him, including Alex Rodriguez (.095), Derek Jeter (.129), Nick Swisher (.167) and Hideki Matsui (.174).”

Hmmm, hope we get to him today.

All they need is 5 out of CC? WTF?!

  15. RichYF says:

A couple fun questions for Joe, Ben, and Mike:

    1. What are each of your winning percentages when you’re the lineup poster?
    2. What sort of success rates do the variations of names have (Carsten Charles Sabathia vs. CC Sabathia) on the result of the start?

Completely useless information, but 100 games in it should tell us SOMETHING, no?

  16. Salty Buggah says:

Is Steve Lombardi ever happy? Even though he didn’t say it (he is asking”, he meant to say that we don’t have a good offense and that we just beat up inferior pitching.

    http://waswatching.com/2009/07.....it-depend/

    • Lombardi is never happy.

      It’s really quite annoying.

    • The Artist says:

I just don’t get fans like that. Especially Yankee fans, who have the least to complain about.

I’m sure they’re scarred for life by some horrendous loss, and figure its better to be pessimistic so you never get disappointed. But who wants to live like that. They may make themselves feel better talking that way, but most people look at them with their negative attitude and want nothing to do with them.

  17. The Artist says:

    Hmmmmmm.

Yanks-Rays game live with CC pitching or the Dave Winfield Yankeeography.

    Decisions, decisions.

  18. raad says:

how come they are showing yankeeography WTF..

  19. raad says:

    k nvm.

  20. I keep forgetting that Kazmir is only 25.

  21. Mikebk says:

6:06pm: Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal are now reporting that Washburn is “officially available” and have informed the Yankees, who plan to make an offer soon. The Brewers also could be interested in Washburn.

  22. Salty Buggah says:

nice long AB there by Jete

  23. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Sweet AB by Jeter, though it ended with a K

  24. Mikebk says:

kazmir historically has high pitch counts so ab’s like that from dj will only get him out quicker.

  25. Accent Shallow says:

Who would have thought we’d see the day where Phil Hughes throws harder than Kazmir?

(For some reason I picture Scott as averaging 100 MPH on the fastball, which is clearly not true. He’s definitely lost some velocity, though)

  26. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Lead off triple against Arroyo

We must trade for this guy!

    • Accent Shallow says:

I really can’t fathom how he’s an attractive pickup at all. Unless someone has a time machine to 2005-06 handy.

  27. Dela G says:

Cmon yanks, lets get this started!

  28. Salty Buggah says:

ZOMG, Kazmir has a perfect game through 1 inning!!!!!!!! We suck against good pitchers and pad our stats against garbage pitchers.

    /Steve Lombardi’s

  29. Bob Stone says:

    B. J. Upton plays a very shallow center field. I can think of at least three instances where the Yankees have capitailzed and hit doubles/triples over his head (including the three run rally to start the scoring last night). Yet he still keeps playing just as shallow. Anyone have any idea why Maddon doesn’t have him move back a little?

    • Accent Shallow says:

Because by playing shallow he can take away singles, and he’s fast enough to get to most balls over his head.

    • Because 90% of the time playing shallow works for him.

    • Because he gets to a lot of balls anyway.

    • Salty Buggah says:

Im not sure but I think mostly he gets good jumps and can utilize his speed to get the balls hit over his head. Most of the time.

      • Bob Stone says:

Seems to me he gets burned badly at times, perhaps giving up much more than is gained getting to the bloops that he turns from singles into outs.

I hope he stays shallow so we can keep hitting it over his head for extra base hits.

I just wondered if anyone else noticed how we have taken advantage of his shallow play this year.

  32. Mike Pop says:

    Nice double play there.

  33. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    9 pitch inning… sweeet

  34. Salty Buggah says:

Woohoo I love DPs…as long as our offense doesnt ground/line into one.

  35. Dela G says:

    marky T!!!!

  36. Accent Shallow says:

This A-Rod fellow is a good hitter.

  37. Great play by Crawford to cut that off.

  38. Tony says:

I often find myself wondering whether I missed something and some other team took the field at some point. Cano is smooooooooooth.

  39. Salty Buggah says:

    no DP Matsui

  40. Accent Shallow says:

    A-Rod doesn’t look very fast.

  41. ShuutoHeat says:

Let me call no homo first (not that there is anything wrong with it) but I think I love the current Yankees infielder…

  42. Dela G says:

    wow crawford is a beast

  43. Salty Buggah says:

    From Steven Goldman:

Washburn is a fly-ball pitcher, which seems like a bad idea in Yankee Stadium II, although being left-handed he should be at a theoretical advantage in the new park. Indeed, left-handed batters can’t touch him, batting .172/.231/.273 in 137 plate appearances. This is well below his career rates of .239/.295/.389, but let’s take it at face value for the moment. Washburn has good control but is usually very proficient at giving up home runs, leading the AL back in 2003. One of the reasons that he’s having such a good year is that in his average season, over seven percent of the flies he’s allowed have left the building. This year, the percentage is down to five, the lowest rate of his career, and yet there is no corresponding increase in his groundball rate. That screams fluke, something that could change at any time.

Still, if you take his proficiency against lefties as gospel and figure his presence will tilt some opposing lineups to the right side, perhaps his fly ball tendencies are not too troublesome. Whereas left-handed batters are hitting a home run once every 19 at-bats at the new park, right-handed batters have hit them at a more manageable (though still high) rate of one every 25 at-bats.

  44. Dela G says:

boy upton has a cannon for an arm

  45. Jose says:

Arod didn’t score? Man he is unclutch.

  46. Salty Buggah says:

Damn couldnt bring home Alex…oh well, let’s get them next time.

  47. Mike Pop says:

    Ya’ll jinxed him.

  48. Mikebk says:

too much jete defensive praise lately.

  49. Salty Buggah says:

Doesnt CC throw a cutter? I remember him saying something like how it’s the last pitch to get working for him in ST. I don’t remember seeing many cutters on Gameday but I just could be misremembering.

  50. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Where has CC’s control gone?

  51. Brazilian Yankee says:

Ump must be blind. At least 2 of those 4 balls were actually strikes.

  52. Salty Buggah says:

Hmm CC kinda gettin squeezed…get out of this CC

  53. charlespoet says:

Burnett did this last night. Why are they so afraid of Pat Burrell. Throw him fastballs, he can only hit mistakes.

  54. Dela G says:

funny, you guys jinxed jeter by talking about his defense

  55. The Artist says:

Check this out. All 3 pitchers are on the trade market right now.

    Pitcher A-ERA 2.62 W-L 11-3 SO 123 WHIP 1.05 BAA .243

    Pitcher B-ERA 3.14 W-L 7-9 SO 107 WHIP 1.30 BAA .278

    Pitcher C-ERA 2.71 W-L 8-6 SO 78 WHIP 1.06 BAA.224

  56. Esteban says:

    Can I Haz Strikes?

  57. The Artist says:

CC in a bit of a pickle right here.

BTW-Anyone know why we say “in a pickle”? How do you literally get inside of a pickle?

  58. Dela G says:

    nice K CC

  59. Trish says:

Is it just me or has Kapler gotten a lot smaller?

  60. Dela G says:

wow cc is getting squeezed by this guy tonight at times

    • Brazilian Yankee says:

The ump is blind. According to gameday he missed some pitches that caught a lot of the plate.

  61. Bob says:

    we need a doubleplay ball

  62. nathan says:

I think CC is aware of his Pitcher-Abuse-Points and wants a quick shower in this one…

  63. Ivan says:

    No biggie.

  64. Bob says:

Wow CC walks 2 batters then gives up a rocket to the next one. Not lookin so good…

  65. That’s easy to make up.

  66. Mike Axisa says:

Way to minimize the damage, CC.

  67. Salty Buggah says:

OK, I dont mind the run that much but please throw strikes and be efficient from here CC

  68. Trish says:

    Phew.

  69. Dela G says:

aight cc, lets kill em now

  70. Mikebk says:

finally a story that the Jays publicly asked for a large package from someone other than us.

“6:44pm: T.R. Sullivan at MLB.com says that the Rangers are reluctant to part with their top prospects for Halladay. The Blue Jays reportedly asked for a king’s ransom of Derek Holland, Justin Smoak and Julio Borbon.”

I still know they asked for more from us, but at least that is approaching comparable in that in the division you always pay a premium.

  71. ShuutoHeat says:

Kazmir looks a bit off on that high pitch..
    something with his release…

  72. Ivan says:

It sure is tough being a baseball GM uh.

    • Dela G says:

not a job i would ever want to have

      • I know it’s tough, but I would absolutely love to have it.

        • Dela G says:

i’d rather be an NBA GM

if Isaiah could do it, i can

          • Mikebk says:

people can whine about isiah as a trader cause he was horrific there but he was great in the draft.

            • Jacob says:

Great is a bit of an overstatement. I always thought he had overrated drafting ability. He looked great compared to how he was at everything else, but he still made some bad decisions. He hit a few good players, but he was far from the draft guru that he was made out to be.

        • Ivan says:

It’s the challege. If your competitive and know what ya doing, and get little lucky now and then, then you could be a good GM.

      • Salty Buggah says:

since they are willing to trade him so easily Im not sure they like him THAT much. It’s all the hype from the MSM/ESPN.

  73. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Clay Buccholz is getting ripped. Why does Theo like this kid so much?

  74. Mikebk says:

    come on DJ…another long AB.

  75. Jersey says:

The Laptop Kid getting knocked around a bit. 2-0 Oakland, middle of the 2nd.

  76. Mikebk says:

yanks working some reverse psychology tonight. make kazmir look good so he has more value to get dealt but still beat rays so they become sellers.

  77. Dela G says:

man kapler for the second night in a row makes an athletic grab

  78. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

How was that pitch a ball?

  79. Mikebk says:

“6:57pm: Morosi and Rosenthal updated their previous post, and they say that the Brewers and Mariners have talked about Washburn. They remind us that Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik was a former exec for the Brewers and say that “many in the industry believe the Brewers have an edge.” Zduriencik is said to be a fan of the injured Rickie Weeks, who could be included as a PTBNL.”

hopefully this saves us from Washburn. Also makes sense that Jack Z would be more comfortable with the brewers system since he is the one responsible for building it so he knows them all very well.

  80. Swisher played that poorly off the wall. I think he thought it was gonna get out.

  81. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Jesus…

  82. Accent Shallow says:

Looks like he just stuck his bat at that . . .

  83. BklynJT says:

Looks like a stinker for CC today.

  84. charlespoet says:

Good thing the bull pen is rested.

  85. Little Bill says:

Cue the “CC’s not a true ace because he doesn’t win every game” rants.

  86. Salty Buggah says:

    OK, CC settle down

  87. Mike Pop says:

    Fucking ridic.

  88. Dela G says:

yikes they are hitting cc a lot tonight

  89. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    WTH IS THIS

  90. Oy, just one of those nights it seems.

  91. SouthernYankeeFan says:

    damn two throws airmailed tonight

  92. charlespoet says:

What the Fuck with this team tonight? Looks like they are half asleep.

  93. Esteban says:

    Yuck, so far

  94. Mike Axisa says:

C’mon dudes, you’re better than this.

  95. Dela G says:

cc will allow probably 3 or so runs

the offense has to bail him out

  96. Dela G says:

wow arod air mailed that shit

  97. Tony B says:

they gave cc an earned run an the a-rod throw

  98. Lanny says:

Would be nice to see CC beat an actual good team once here.

  99. ansky says:

no worries people, still plenty of ball left to be played in this game and we all know the Yanks like the comeback

  100. The Artist says:

“6:44pm: T.R. Sullivan at MLB.com says that the Rangers are reluctant to part with their top prospects for Halladay. The Blue Jays reportedly asked for a king’s ransom of Derek Holland, Justin Smoak and Julio Borbon.”

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....day-2.html

Woah. JP has cohones, I’ll grant him that.

  101. “Sabathia does not have great command tonight” In other analysis, the Detroit Lions will probably not win the 2009-2010 Super Bowl.

  102. Salty Buggah says:

OK, cmon offense time to mash

  103. Jimmy McNulty says:

I guess we’ll have to root for the Os tonight, so that the Yanks can keep the 2.5 game lead in the AL East.

    :(

  104. Brazilian Yankee says:

Time for the offense to do something.

  105. Jimmy McNulty says:

Are we allowed to call the Red Sox derrogatory names here?

    • Salty Buggah says:

yes, especially words like “Buchholz”. They need to go Buchholz themselves those buchholzing buchholzers

  106. Jimmy McNulty says:

    EARN THAT CONTRACT MARKIE!!!!!!

  107. charlespoet says:

    ARod gets a single

  108. Jimmy McNulty says:

    Unclutch

  109. Mike Axisa says:

I look forward to seeing you in pinstripes, Mr. Crawford.

  110. Fucking Crawford.

  111. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

dammit i wish we had Crawford.

  112. Mike Pop says:

    Man, Alex smoked that ball.

  113. SouthernYankeeFan says:

i hope crawford is wearing pinstripes after he becomes a free agent

  114. Mike Pop says:

    Hideki, what are you doing?

  115. Rich D. says:

I love CC but ever since the all-star break, he has gotten of to slow starts in games. The first 2-3 innings have rough for him!

  116. Accent Shallow says:

Matsui-san with a rare baserunning error.

    I’ll take the RBI, though.

  117. Mike Axisa says:

    Bah, Matsui. Brain fart.

  118. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Bad baserunning, but i’ll take that run.

  119. charlespoet says:

Cmon Matsui!!!!!! Man the Yankees have some shitty base runners. Taking a queue from Swisher.

  120. Rich D. says:

Ok we are on the board! 3-1 TB… bad base running Hideki but nice single!

  121. Jimmy McNulty says:

    Hideki, you suck at running.

  122. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Bases loaded in Boston, Youk up

  123. Salty Buggah says:

one run…thats a start. We’ll get him soon enough I think. We’re hitting the ball pretty well, just need them to land.

  124. Reggie C. says:

    Cano will homer in 3… 2… 1…

  125. Dela G says:

wow matsui, you aren’t effing carl crawford

  126. Changeup, meet Robbie. Robbie, changeup.

  127. Yankee1010 says:

Well, look on the bright side – the Yanks have played awful defense, left some runners on, run the bases poorly and it’s only 3-1. Plenty of time to come back.

  128. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Seems like the ump in Fenway is a sox fan, gave Youk 2 balls, on two obvious strikes there.

  129. Rich D. says:

nice play by bartlett… jorge is slow as hell!

  130. Accent Shallow says:

That’s a single if the man on first is anyone on the Yankees (non-catcher division)

  131. Jimmy McNulty says:

    Cano with runners on

  132. charlespoet says:

Ok, I do not know who is slower – Posada, Matsui, Giambi (bringing him back for fun), or Molina?

But seriously, how slow do you have to be to not be safe.

  133. putt says:

    Really, Jorge?

    • Bob says:

how is it possible to be that slow. jees that mightve taken away a possible 2 out rally.

  134. Salty Buggah says:

OK, CC earn that check and hold them there. 3 runs arent bad and please be efficient now so you can go 7.

  135. Jimmy McNulty says:

Looks like only a game and a half lead now

    :(

  136. Dela G says:

i have a feeling cc will cruise from now on

  137. Rich D. says:

Acieves and Robertson are not available tonight according to Yanks beat writer Bryan Hoch. CC has to go 7

  138. Jimmy McNulty says:

They should bring in Swisher to strike out Kapler again

    ;)

  139. Coach6423 says:

Jimmy McNulty apparently hasnt watched any Yankee games this year…

  140. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Vin Mazzaro is baaaaaaad.

  141. Mike Axisa says:

The whole “A-Rod struggles with pop-ups” thing needs to end. He dropped two balls like, four years ago. Might be time to move on.

  142. Dela G says:

man they are really squeezing cc tonight

    holy crap

  143. Mike Axisa says:

There we go, strong inning from CC.

  144. Mikebk says:

there is the comeback inning CC needed.

  145. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Nice inning by CC

  146. CC: “He’s grinding it tonight” Only in baseball, folks.

  147. Tony says:

    “He’s grinding it tonight.”

    Shut the hell up, Kay.

  148. Dela G says:

ken singleton with the XX refernce

    nice
